24 Year Anambra Tech Guru wins $135,000 Sharjah Award. A 24 year Anambra tech guru from Anambra state,Stanley Anigbogu has won Dh 500,000 Sharjah international award in UAE. Anigbogu won the award through his Foundation that converted plastic and e-waste to light up refugee communities and underserved regions across Africa. LightEd Impact Foundation was selected from over 527 candidates from 53 countries for the eighth Sharjah International Award for Refugee Advocacy and Support. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, handed over the prize to LightEd Impact's co-founder Stanley Anigbogu at a ceremony held at Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park on Wednesday. The award, sponsored by The Big Heart Foundation, recognised LightEd's innovative way of repurposing electronic and plastic waste to create portable solar lamps and electric charging stations. It benefitted more than 50,000 underserved African households and helped reduce the use of harmful kerosene by 70 per cent. Stanley Anigbogu of LightEd Foundation hopes to reach a million refugees over the next five years. “Our work is driven by the belief that when we light up a home, we light up a future,” Mr Anigbogu said. The foundation has so far provided solar lamps for 25,000 students and trained over 2,000 community members in solar technology installation and maintenance. “When we empower a child with knowledge, we empower a generation. I’m thrilled knowing that we are providing light to those in darkness for a better future,” Mr Anigbogu added. The award will go towards funding the foundation's next project of “transforming plastic waste into bricks to build solar-powered charging stations for phones”. And they hope to reach “a million refugees” within “the next five years … It is going to be a very long journey but we dare to dream big”. How is energy access linked to education The 24-year-old energy expert, who grew up in Onitsha, Nigeria, experienced the struggles of “energy poverty” growing up when all he had access to was a kerosene lamp or a candle in his home. “I realised how deeply energy access is connected to education, health and opportunity. In 2021, I started the initiative with $200 by transferring e-waste into solar light,” he added. “My journey has been filled with moments of profound joy such as watching a child’s face light up with the first glow of clean energy, seeing a mother’s relief as she charges a phone to stay connected to loved ones.” The foundation has also contributed towards improving healthcare facilities in rural areas. They have used solar energy to power clinics, ensuring that vital services, including refrigeration for vaccines and medical supplies, are available even in the most remote locations. “These efforts are critical in areas where healthcare delivery has been hampered by the lack of electricity,” he noted. Mariam Al Hammadi, director general of The Big Heart Foundation, said the humanitarian action has a vital role in overcoming global challenges. LightEd “has established solar energy stations in remote areas, providing refugee children the opportunity to continue their education and acquire essential skills. It also contributed to establishing safety and security standards, leading to a reduction in various forms of crime, including theft, murder, harassment, and rape”, she said in her speech. “Our ultimate hope is that this award will no longer be necessary one day. We dream of a world without refugees, where wars in Palestine, Sudan, Lebanon, Yemen, and other nations cease, and where peace prevails,” she added. “Despite the difficult circumstances in Gaza today, we remain confident that the strength of hope will spark countless initiatives, rallying hundreds and thousands of hands to overcome this crisis.” https://anambrapeople.com.ng/2024/09/19/24-year-anambra-tech-guru-wins-135000-sharjah-award/

G. C Nonyelu: Meet the First Nigerian Federal DPP From Anambra State. G C Nonyelu was born in Aba, Abia State in 1914. He was the first son of Josiah Ezidinma (a nurse) and Zipporah Nonyelu from Amawbia, Anambra State. Nonyelu attended St. Michael's primary school in Aba where his strong and intelligence paved the way for him to be enrolled in the famous Hope Waddell Training Institute Calabar He would later secure admission into Igbobi College, Lagos and decided to pursue a career as a lawyer. The decision to become a lawyer was born out of the desire to fulfill his ambition as one of the best lawyers in Nigeria. At the age of 30,precisely in 1944, the brilliant G C travelled to England alongside Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Chief Akintola Williams. Over there in England, Nonyelu studied law at the Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn and the Inns of Court and on 26 January 1948, he was called to the Bar of England and Wales. He practiced a little in England before coming back to Nigeria to start a practice. Nonyelu set up a legal practice (Nwezidunma Chambers) in Port Harcourt upon his return to Nigeria from the United Kingdom. In 1952, he was invited by Chief Obafemi Awolowo, leader of the Action Group, to serve as Legal Adviser for his group. He served in this capacity in the historical conference on the Nigerian Constitution held at No 10 Carlton House Terrence London in 1953.The main objective of the conference as outlined by the Chair, Mr Oliver Lyttleton, was the question of Nigeria's self-government. After the 1953 conference in London and following several reforms, Nigeria was made independent on 1 October 1960 (four years after the initially proposed year of 1956). Nonyelu was then made the first Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation of Nigeria. His role was mainly to institute and conduct prosecutions, assist in inquests and inquiries, to provide advice to investigators or to bring a matter to a close. The DPP was seen as the official whose aim was to ensure a fair trial and establish the truth. In 1961, Nonyelu was appointed a Queen's Counsel, British equivalent of Senior Advocate of Nigeria. However In 1964, Nigeria as an independent country stripped away the autonomy of the DPP and made it a department under the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, which were political offices. Nonyelu resigned from the role of DPP as he felt that the role did not serve the purpose to which he originally agreed to. He felt that the change the government chose to introduce undermined the rule of law as it allowed for political interference in the administration of justice. After his resignation, he tried to keep a low profile and focus on his career as a lawyer. Nonyelu served on the Enugu Colliery (Iva Valley) massacre case alongside H.U Kaine, Rotimi Williams, H.O. Davies, Jaja Nwachukwu, M.O Ajegbo, G.C. Nkemena, C.D. Onyeama, G.C.M. Onyiuke, and M. Ogo Ibeziako. G.C's influence spanned beyond the Eastern region as he set up a sister Chamber in Lagos. Nonyelu married Emily (Emilia) Aguta, a nurse trained by the Christian Missionary Society (CMS). Emily was from Mbieri, Imo State, the granddaughter of Chief Abraham Aguta, the traditional ruler of Ubaku Mbieri in Ikeduru, Imo State. Nonyelu had five children, three girls and two boys. Nonyelu and his wife founded Iruka Clinic which catered to pre and post-natal care. G.C. also contributed to the development of the Eastern part of Nigeria by training and educating some of the local children, donating musical equipment to churches, notably, St Peter's Church in Port Harcourt and offering free legal advice to those who could not afford his legal fees. In 2017, G.C's philanthropy and great contributions to the development of Amawbia and Nigeria was recognised (posthumously) by the Amawbia Town Union in Anambra State. On 9 March 2022, the Governor of Anambra State, His Excellency, Chief Willie Obiano, recognised Nonyelu (posthumously) and presented an award to the Nonyelu family to honour G.C.'s "outstanding performance and achievements nationally and internationally." Nonyelu died in 1972, two years after the Nigerian Civil War. He is buried in the Nonyelu compound in Amawbia. https://anambrapeople.com.ng/2024/09/09/g-c-nonyelu-meet-the-first-nigerian-federal-dpp-from-anambra-state/

International Youth Day: UDUF Africa Organises Digital Workshop for Students in Anambra As part of activities to mark the 2024 International Youth Day celebration, the Ultimate Destiny Uplifters Foundation has organized a digital workshop for students with a view to exposing them to various digital tools and opportunities and to prepare them for future leadership roles . At a one-day workshop held at the Nwafor Orizu College of Education Nsugbe, Anambra State, recently, the Foundation said it deemed it fit to equip the youths with relevant skills to enable them thrive in the expansive digital economy and shape them for a better future and the society as a whole. The speaker spoke on theme of the event, titled, 'From clicks to progress: Youths digital pathways for sustainable development', She added that the theme was apt because young people must embrace digital learning through the right ways for social impact and emancipation. In his remark, Executive Director, International Youth Day Celebration, Precious Okpala, added that African youths' pathway to sustainable development lies in their ability to utilise, in best possible ways and practices, the digital space to remain progressively competitive. Continuing Okpala said, "The aim of this event is to gather young people and equip them with the right skills on digital pathways for sustainable development. If you observe the happenings around us, you will see that a lot of youths are misusing the Internet and digital space and are using it wrongly. "This shows that today's youths need a proper guide on the best digital practices to prepare them for a better future and leadership role. They need to be properly equipped so they stop using it wrongly. It is said that when you do not know the original or the right one, you will not know the counterfeit one. "The International Youth Day celebration holds every August 12, but UDUF chose to celebrate on August 23. The theme for this year's event gears towards youth's pathway for sustainable development and it is aimed at equipping young Africans with skills to strive in the digital economy, entrepreneurial empowerment and ensuring a brighter future. "It also aims to promote digital inclusion, engaging skills development, encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship advocating for policy support. We urged the young leaders to embrace digital learning for social impact to elaborate for more knowledge." One of the Members of board of Directors UDUF Africa, Uchenna Nwosu, said the aim and vision is to be a sought after organization that will inspire Africa’s new generation of young servant leaders and entrepreneurs who are ethical and community service-oriented. Anambra Has the Largest Urban Centres,6th Most Viable Economy in Nigeria – Soludo Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has announced that the state is making significant progress, ranking as the sixth largest economy in Nigeria with the lowest poverty indicators. Governor Soludo made this statement during a live broadcast in Awka, commemorating Anambra State’s 33rd anniversary. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Anambra was established on August 27, 1991, alongside eight other states, under the leadership of then-military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida. Reflecting on the state’s journey over the past 33 years, Soludo highlighted that Anambra remains on the right trajectory, being among the top six most viable economies in the country. “In terms of poverty index, we rank the lowest, and we have the largest urban centers with four major cities in the state,” Soludo stated. “We also have the lowest number of out-of-school children in the country, a testament to our educational achievements. In healthcare, we are second only to Lagos in having a low infant mortality rate.” As Soludo approaches his third year in office, he emphasized his administration’s cautious approach to borrowing, proudly stating that no loans have been taken. “I want to make it clear that we take the issue of borrowing very seriously. We will not borrow unless we can clearly show where the funds will be allocated and the value they will add,” Soludo asserted. “The recent claim that Anambra is planning to borrow N245 billion to finance the 2024 budget is a blatant falsehood and should be disregarded.” Governor Soludo reaffirmed his commitment to elevating Anambra to greater heights and preserving the vision of the state’s founding fathers. LG poll: Soludo under fire over sealing of LP office in Anambra Chinedum Treasure Labour Party in Anambra State has described sealing of its Party by the State government as illegal, obnoxious and intimidating. State Secretary, Okoli Akirika Esq, in a statement said the action, carried out without any form of engagement with the Party is not unconnected to the September 28 Local Government elections which he accused the government of attempting to truncate. He however appealed to party faithful to remain calm and lawful, assuring that the leadership would recourse to due process to contain and checkmate the unprovoked and untrammelled illegality. The statement reads, "The Anambra State Government has sealed the Labour Party Anambra State Party Office in Awka. "The action which was carried out NOW was done without notice, warning, nor any form of engagement with the Labour Party. "The agents of the Anambra State Government accompanied by men dressed in soldiers uniform stormed the Labour Party Anambra State Office and in a maniacal, frenzied and frenetic commando like operation, chased away the staff in the office and sealed the office "It is rather unfortunate, bizarre, and brazen that the Anambra State Government, which is fruitlessly seeking to truncate statutorily emplaced procedures to select Local Government Chairmen and councillors in the deviously convoluted LG election, is now mindlessly resorting to underhand, illegal and obnoxious intimidation. "While appealing to teeming Labour Party members, supporters, sympathisers, stakeholders and Ndi Anambra in general, the State Leadership of our great Labour Party shall, as law abiding Anambrarians shall have recourse to due process to contain and checkmate this unprovoked and untrammelled illegality." https://anambrapeople.com.ng/2024/08/27/lg-poll-soludo-under-fire-over-sealing-of-lp-office-in-anambra/

Cardinal Arinze Warns Youth Against Japa On Sunday, his Eminence Cardinal Francis Arinze admonished youths to be wary of engaging in any international journey without proper planning. This, Cardinal Arinze said on Sunday, at the St. Paul’s Catholic Church Nnobi in Idemili South LGA, during the dedication of baby Chihotaram Omenugha, daughter of Mrs. Chidera and Dr. Nelson Omenugha, Governor Soludo’s adviser on youth development programmes. Speaking shortly after the dedication mass, Cardinal Arinze said that every country worldwide has its peculiar challenge and that most times what people admire from afar is not as good in reality. According to the Cardinal, many Nigerians are today serving jail terms across Europe for one crime or another. “When I go for prison visitations, I see them. They greet me in a way that shows that they know me. They are in prison serving jail terms in Europe. That is not good,” His Eminence said. This situation, he regretted, is a direct consequence of desperate journeys and unplanned international travel because some people just believe that once they enter Europe, they will pick money from the streets. To guard against this, Cardinal Arinze said young people must be told the truth. “If you travel to Europe or America without a good skill or a good job, you are in trouble and that is why some of our people end up in jail because they go and get involved in one crime or another,” he said. The Cardinal who lamented that Nigeria’s profile has suffered from the activities of people who engage in desperate journeys, thereby getting into all sorts and in consequence, damaging the country’s image, also said that Nigerians are equally doing well. In several monasteries in Italy and other parts of Europe, only Nigerians presently occupy many of them, among other positive things that he outlined as being done by Nigerians in Europe. The dedication of Chihotaram Omenugha which His Eminence Cardinal Arinze had come to celebrate moved from St. Paul’s Catholic Church to the home of Nelson and Chidera Omenugha, where they entertained their guests, family members, and well-wishers. https://anambrapeople.com.ng/2024/08/27/cardinal-arinze-warns-youth-against-japa/
