CultureHow Mkpokiti Dance Became Famous In Nigeria. by AnambraPeople(op): 12:55am On Jul 07, 2024
THE FAMOUS MKPOKITI DANCE

Mkpokiti dance was founded in 1959 by late Chief Festus Okoli Nwankwo of Ugwunano village of Umunze in Orumba local government of Anambra state.

In 1970 immediately after the genocidal civil war, all the states of the Nigerian federation were summoned in Lagos to celebrate the end of the civil war. Among the programmes lined up for the celebrations was the cultural dance competition from all the states. A cash prize of 3,000 British Pounds and a gold gong were prizes for the first place in cultural dances. The competition started from villages to the divisions and to the states. From village level to the national stage, Mkpokiti secured first position and won the coveted gold gong and cash prize in Lagos.

This stimulated other dance groups in the country with the result that in 1971, many dance groups registered for the competition. The final competition for the year took place in Ibadan and Mkpokiti maintained the lead.

In 1972 – 1973 in Kaduna, the case was the same. Since inception, the Mkpokiti dance group has never obtained a second position in any competition. Formerly, Anambra state government chose Mkpokiti as its state dance but after the continuous clinching of first position in national competitions, the federal government adopted Mkpokiti as a national dance. Mkpokiti represented the federal government in FESTAC ’77 at Lagos. In New York, Washington, Jamaica, Barbados, Brazil, Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, Port of Spain, and England, Mkpokiti dance has been exhibited as the greatest cultural dance in Africa.

The Satinsheen Company under the management of Miss Franca Afebua took Mkpokiti dance to a global competition in Wembley, England. All the groups competed in Oxford University, England. As expected, Mkpokiti dance secured the1st prize there and carried the World Cup back to Nigeria.

The federal government has taken Mkpokiti dance group to ALL THE PARTS OF THE WORLD except Australia. The achievements made in these travels including winning the World Cup multiple times even in New York, Algeria and North Korea a few years ago rightly crowned the legendary Mkpokiti dance of Umunze people . They’re regarded as the greatest cultural dance group in the universe, they’re featured at the back of #5 note as an honor.

How these 6 Anambra families became Powerful in Nigeria

Below in no particular order is a list of 6 Anambra families prominent in politics and business that have gone beyond the first generation, with visible family members and a strong social standing.

The Ojukwu Family:

The Ojukwu family needs no introduction. Simply mention the name Ojukwu in Nigeria and everyone knows what family you are referring to. The family fortune was built by the late Sir Louis Odumegwu Ojukwu KBE in the 30’s. Sir Louis was Nigeria’s first corporate titan and millionaire. He was the founder of Ojukwu Stores, Ojukwu Textiles and Ojukwu Transport (the first major transport company to move easterners to Lagos from Onitsha). He soon diversified his interests, investing in various companies and organisations across the country. At the peak of his success, Sir Louis was the first and founding President of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, President of the African Continental Bank, and Chairman of the Board of some of Nigeria’s most profitable companies such as Shell Oil Nigeria Ltd, Guinness Nig. Ltd, Nigerian National Shipping Lines, Nigerian Cement Factory, Nigerian Coal Corporation, Costain West Africa Ltd, and John Holt amongst others. In 1939, on the outbreak of World War 2, the British Government requested the use of Sir Ojukwu’s fleet of trucks for the War effort to which he agreed. When the war ended in 1945, the British Goverment recognised his sacrifice and he was awarded a KBE (Knight of the British Empire). A man of immense wealth and influence; in 1956 when the Queen visited Nigeria, the British authorities had to borrow his Rolls Royce and personal driver to chauffeur the Queen around. Sir Louis was also a financial pillar of Zik’s NCNC party and when the party came to power in 1960, Sir Louis was offered the position of Minister of Finance which he turned down, the position ultimately went to Okotie-Eboh.
Politically, he was the Chairman of the Eastern Nigerian Development Corporation (ENDC), the Eastern Regional Marketing Board, and a Member of the Federal House of Representatives. Despite his many achievements, His Oxford trained son Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu (Ikemba of Nnewi), would rise to eclipse him in name and recognition, but not in wealth. Ikemba, who was the Military Governor of the Eastern Region in 1966, was the President of the breakaway Republic of Biafra during the Nigerian Civil War. In the twilight of his life, Ikemba was the founder and Party Leader of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), which at the time of his death in 2011 had secured control of two states in the south east. As a historical figure, Ikemba is considered one of the greatest and most prominent Igbo leaders, alongside the late great ‘Zik of Africa’. He was married to Ambassador Bianca Onoh (former Miss Nigeria and daughter of C.C. Onoh, the former Governor of Anambra State). The third generation is represented by his son Emeka Ojukwu Jr. (from a previous marriage) who was former Commissioner for Special Duties in Anambra, and Member of APGA’s Board of Trustees.

The Okeke-Ojiudu Family:

The Okeke-Ojiudu family is a political and business dynasty founded in the 1940’s by the late Chief P.N. Okeke-Ojiudu. Unlike most other prominent Igbo families, the Okeke-Ojiudu family survived the civil war with control over their structures and tightly knit family businesses. The patriarch Chief P.N. was a prominent politician, legislator, businessman and philanthropist; and was the influential Minister of Agriculture during the Nigerian First Republic. A successful businessman, P.N. transitioned into politics early in his career and joined the struggle for independence; As a young and rising legislator in the 50’s, P.N. was re-elected member of the Eastern House of Assembly with a massive vote of 67,000; second only to Nnamdi Azikiwe who polled 77,000 votes. A man of wisdom and refined taste, P.N. was intelligent, practical and handsome. Popularly known by his colleagues as a ‘Man with a Plan’, he was one of the most powerful figures in the former Eastern Region alongside M.I. Okpara and Zik. An equivalent to the Federal Ministry of Petroleum today, the Ministry of Agriculture was arguably the most important ministry in the government at the time. Under his direction, the Ministry bankrolled government projects, provided jobs, boosted food supply, and bolstered economic growth. A devout catholic and papal knight; his friends included Cardinal Francis Arinze and blessed father Michael Iwene Tansi – who was beatified by the Pope in 1998. The second generation of the family is represented by his sons Ambassador Dr Francis Okeke-Ojiudu, a medical doctor who became Nigeria’s first Ambassador to the Vatican City and Chief Tony Okeke-Ojiudu, a businessman who heads the family’s businesses. The family is still going strong into its third generation with business leaders, policy shapers and Ivy League graduates. Unique in its blend of family business and public service, the Okeke-Ojiudu family is one family that will definitely endure.

The Azikiwe Family:

Nnamdi Azikiwe was a legendary statesman, patriot, leader and political icon. He transcended national politics to become a global figure and is considered by many to be the father of post-independence Nigeria. As the first President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Azikiwe pushed for and oversaw the young Nation’s transition from colony to republic. In his early years, Azikiwe was a graduate of Howard University, USA, and the University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy League institution also located in the United States. Upon his return to Nigeria, Azikiwe founded the ‘West African Pilot’, a newspaper he used to promote Nigerian Nationalism. Along with the Pilot (Lagos), he started a string of newspapers in various cities across the nation under the ‘Zik Group of Newspapers’. Other papers under the group included: the Southern Nigerian Defender (Ibadan), the Eastern Nigerian Guardian (Port Harcourt), the Eastern Sentinel (Enugu), the Nigerian Spokesman (Onitsha), and the Daily Comet (Kano). After a successful journalism enterprise, Azikiwe entered active politics, co-founding the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) alongside Herbert Macaulay in 1944. He soon became; a Member of the Eastern House of Assembly, Premier of the Eastern Region, Governor General of Nigeria, and finally the first President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Although his group of newspapers no longer exists today, Azikiwe’s legacy lives on in his many children. His best known son was the late Chukwuma Azikiwe (the Owelle of Onitsha). Chukwuma, a graduate of Harvard University, was the oldest son of Zik and succeeded his father as the second Owelle of Onitsha. He ran unsuccessfully for Anambra Governor in 1991 under the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Another son, Emeka Azikiwe, was Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (from 1987-1993), and a Special Adviser on Anti-Corruption to President Olusegun Obasanjo; and a third son Uwakwe Azikiwe, is currently strong in Enugu State politics.

The Okigbo Family:

The Okigbo family came to national prominence with the emergence the Okigbo brothers, Pius and Christopher in the 1960’s. Pius, the older of the two was a world renowned economist, academic and administrator who served different administrations and the United Nations in various capacities. An erudite scholar, Pius was the first Economic Adviser to the government of the former Eastern Region of Nigeria (1960-1962), the first Economic Adviser to the Federal Government of Nigeria (1962-1967), and Nigeria’s first Ambassador to the European Economic Community (EU). In 1994, as Chairman of a committee to probe the activities of the Central Bank of Nigeria, he released a report critical of the government’s role in mismanaging 12.4 billion dollars of oil revenues. The report was popularly known as the ‘Okigbo Report’. His younger brother Christopher Okigbo, was an influential and enigmatic poet and author who died fighting for the independence of Biafra. Considered one of the greatest modernist writers of the 20th century, some of his works included; Silences (1962), Limits (1964), Lament of the Masks (1964), Dance of the Painted Maidens (1964), and his final highly prophetic sequence, Path of Thunder (1965–67), which was published posthumously in 1971 with his magnum opus, Labyrinths. Christopher was bosom friends with literary legend Chinua Achebe of whom he partnered with in the 60’s to establish a publishing house called Citadel Press. The second generation of the family is represented by Pius’s son Pius Okigbo Jr., Founder of InfoSoft Ltd and former President of the Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria (ISPON), and Christopher’s daughter Obiageli Okigbo, who established the Christopher Okigbo Foundation in 2005 to perpetuate her father’s legacy.

The Udoji Family:

Chief Jerome Udoji was a renowned government bureaucrat, technocrat, public administrator, businessman and philanthropist in the Nigerian First Republic. He was educated at Cambridge University in England and held the traditional title of Igwe of Ozubulu. During the Nigerian First Republic, Chief Jerome was Permanent Secretary to the Ministries of Commerce, Finance and Health. He soon rose to become the Head of Service in the former Eastern Region and Chief Secretary to the Premier of the Eastern Region, Dr. Michael Okpara. He was also Secretary to the Executive Council and served as the official constitutional Adviser to the Eastern Nigerian delegation to the Nigerian Constitutional Conference in London. A corporate giant, Jerome helped found the Nigerian Stock Exchange and served as its Chairman from 1981 to 1986. He was also Chairman or on the board of at least 13 major corporations in Nigeria including Citibank Nigeria and Nigerian Tobacco Company. A papal knight and philanthropist, the Udoji Award is named in his honour, as well as the newly built Anambra State Secretariat. His son Chief Oscar Udoji is a businessman and founder of the defunct Udoji United FC. He also served as the national Chairman for the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), and founding member of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

The Ugochukwu Family:

Mathias Ugochukwu was a prominent industrialist, businessman and traditional ruler from Umunze, Anambra, who played a major role in large scale industrialisation and manufacturing in the Eastern Region. After engaging in various jobs as a youth including petty trading, he joined the police force in 1945. The turning point in his career came in 1951 when he won 50,000 pounds on the Irish Sweepstake. He soon left the police force for the business world. He first traded motor parts, and then built up a sizable transport company that was second only to Ojukwu Transport. He purchased shares in John Holt and his close association with the company soon lead to his appointment as Chairman. Mathias then diversified into imports (tobacco, textiles and food stuffs) and real estate, and became the Chairman of the African Development Corporation – an indigenous investment agency which had as its board members Louis Ojukwu, L.N. Obioha and C.T. Onyekwelu. Mathias also took up various regional and federal appointments including; the African Development Bank, National Railway Corporation, Nigerian Industrial Development Bank, the Stock Exchange, the Federal Tenders Board and the Eastern Nigerian Marketing Board. After the civil war, Mathias was the founder of Ugochukwu Chemical Industries which produces mattresses, pillows, cushions and sheeting. While he was never directly involved in politics, he nevertheless identified with political parties. He was a member of the NCNC in the First Republic and the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) in the Second Republic. His many children are all involved in business and a few have successfully tried their hands in politics, notable of which include; Nikky Ugochukwu, a Member of the Anambra State House of Assembly and Chinedu Ugochukwu, a former Member of the Federal House of Representatives.

EducationNigerian Nursing Mother Bags First Class(nursing) In A UK University by AnambraPeople(op): 7:19pm On Jul 01, 2024
Nigerian Nursing Mother Bags First Class(Nursing) in a UK University

A Nigerian nursing mother based in the UK, Mrs Chisom Ibeanusi(Ezeakalue) has recently graduated with a first-class degree in Nursing Science from the University of Derby, becoming one of the top graduates of the Class of 2024.

On June 28, 2024, the graduation ceremony at the University of Derby celebrated her remarkable achievement. However, her journey to this moment was anything but smooth.

Chisom’s passion for nursing began in Nigeria, where she completed a Diploma in Nursing from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH). She then enrolled for a degree in nursing at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). However, the protracted ASUU strike in 2020 interrupted her studies, leading her to abandon the programme. Determined to pursue her dreams, Chisom moved to the UK with her newly wedded husband, Dr. Ejike Ibeanusi, who promised her she would achieve her nursing degree from an international university.

In the UK, Chisom faced quite a few challenges.

Juggling a full-time job, her duties as a mother, and the demands of her nursing degree at the University of Derby, she burned the midnight oil. Her dedication and hard work paid off as she graduated with first-class honors in Nursing Sciences.

Speaking on the heels of her graduation, Chisom credited her success first to God Almighty, then her husband, Dr. Ejike Ibeanusi. In her words, "I owe this achievement to my lovely husband, who not only kept his promise of ensuring I get back to obtain a degree in Nursing overseas but also managed our home, taking care of our baby and supporting me despite his own busy schedule as a medical doctor. My husband has been my backbone, very supportive, sometimes doing research on some courses and providing me with resources. A couple of friends of mine have also been amazing in this journey."

Chisom's inspiration to become a nurse stemmed from her innate desire to care for the vulnerable. "I chose this profession because I wanted to care for people. When I entered nursing, I felt this is it. Helping people through their vulnerability to become fit and well again is something I enjoy," she said.

Reflecting on her time at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Chisom admitted it felt like she was halting a significant part of her life. However, she was convinced she needed to travel abroad to fulfil her dreams. "I knew it wouldn't be easy, but I felt I could do it. I have a strong and courageous partner who helped me through this journey abroad to achieve this degree. Even though it’s been busy with ups and downs, we stood our ground to achieve it and more. Achieving this first-class degree is a stepping stone for me."

The challenges of being a nursing mother in a foreign country are considerable. "My advice to fellow nursing mothers seeking to advance their studies is that everything is doable if you put your mind to it. It’s challenging being a mother, working, and studying, especially when you don't have help to take care of your child while you read. Unlike in Nigeria, where you can afford a househelp or have a relative to assist, you have to manage on your own here."

Chisom expressed gratitude for the supportive environment at the University of Derby. "I had good tutors who aligned the courses to be self-paced, allowing me to work at my own pace. That really helped."

Her joy at graduating with a first-class degree was palpable. "I feel so excited graduating with first-class honours. I’m happy this dream has come true, and I look forward to better growth and a successful career ahead."

To other young people, Chisom offers this advice: "Do it even when you feel you can't."

Chisom Ibeanusi's story is a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and support. Her journey from Nigeria to achieving academic excellence in the UK is an inspiration to all who face obstacles in pursuing their dreams.

PoliticsAbdullahi Liman, And The Making Of A Judicial Scandal by AnambraPeople(op): 1:13pm On Jun 30, 2024
Abdullahi Liman, and the Making of a Judicial Scandal

By
Chidi Anselm Odinkalu

In the month since 23 May 2024, when - during hours reserved by nature entirely for meetings of witches and wizards - he began sitting as Kingmaker for the Emirate of Kano, Abdullahi Liman, a senior judge of Nigeria’s Federal High Court, has handed down at least five rulings. Defying settled Supreme Court jurisprudence, he has asserted federal jurisdiction to decide for the people of Kano who their Emir should be; proceeded unperturbed even after being shown that the subject matter of his proposed decision-making had entered the docket of the Court of Appeal; and ordered the government of Kano State not to implement state law which he is incapable of invalidating.

The scandal about the course that Abdullahi Liman has chosen in his self-designated role as Kano’s federally-appointed Kingmaker is not in what he has done, however. It lies in what he has failed to do. The most significant thing in this case is the near certainty that there was no lawful case on the docket when the judge purported to remotely issue a night-time order on 23 May 2024, requiring the parties to “maintain status quo ante the passage and assent of the bill into law.” A more serious judicial scandal would be difficult to invent. It is, therefore, important to clearly consider the facts that show that what has occurred in the court of Abdullahi Liman is judicial misconduct of the most spectacular kind.

Abdullahi Liman has been a lawyer for four decades and a judge for nearly a quarter of a century. Born 11 February 1959, he became a lawyer in 1984 and was in private legal practice in his home State, Nasarawa, and in neighbouring Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, until his appointment as a judge at 42 on 27 July 2000. He is presently the fourth senior-most judge of the Federal High Court. The week preceding his assumption of office as Kano’s sole Kingmaker, the National Judicial Council recommended Abdullahi Liman at the head of a list of 22 judges for elevation to the Court of Appeal. Whatever anyone may say of his work, judicial inexperience is not a charge that can be sustained against him.

The evidence of judicial malpractice in this case is compelling. Let’s begin from the beginning. On Thursday, 20 June, 2024, Abdullahi Liman delivered a 22-page ruling precluding the substantive dispute before any opportunity to consider it. The ruling, which purports to nullify “every step taken” by the Kano State government under the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law assented to by the Governor on 23 May, 2024, began as follows: “This Court on the 23rd of May, 2024, made an order via virtual proceedings, which was enrolled on the same date.” Notably, the judge failed to say when the case was filed. His anger and the entire basis of his orders, as Abdullahi Liman claimed in his ruling, was that the Government of Kano “defiantly went ahead to implement the law that is sought to be struck down.”

It is standard practice for judges in Nigeria to begin their judgments and rulings by clearly reciting details of when the case was filed that they are called upon to decide. As Kano’s Kingmaker, Abdullahi Liman cannot be bothered with such routines. For context, a claimant who wishes to file a case will usually take the relevant papers to the court registry. There, registry staff will assess the necessary fees, which the person filing the case must pay. Upon payment, a Remita electronic payment record is generated as proof of payment and of the amount paid, together with a time stamp of when the payment occurred.
The working hours of Court registries in Nigeria are well known. On 23 May, 2024, the Governor of Kano State assented to the law at 5:10 pm or 17:10 hours. At that time of day, the registry of the Federal High Court in Kano had long closed for the week. So, no case could have been filed thereafter on that day to challenge the law. The only other possibility was that the filing happened before the Governor indicated his assent. If so, that filing could not have provided any basis for Abdullahi Liman’s peregrinations later that night in a judicial coven.

The only basis on which he could have issued the orders that he did on 23 May, therefore, must be that the case was filed after the Governor’s assent. As a matter of law, that is impossible in the absence of a record of a prior decision by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court extending the opening hours of the registry. As a practical matter, the staff of the Federal High Court in Kano do not have any record of any such filing. Off record, some people close to the bench suggest unconvincingly that a Remita record for the filing exists at the Federal High Court Registry in Lagos. If so, no one has found it. Lagos and Kano are not in different time zones and the rules governing office hours for the Federal High Court in Lagos are presumably not different from those applicable in Kano.

Three weeks after his first order, on 13 June, Abdullahi Liman finally ruled to claim jurisdiction over Kano’s Emirate tussle. In doing so, he considered the Supreme Court’s 1988 decision concerning the deposition of the Emir of Muri but blightly dismissed it as “distinguishable with the facts of the instant case and, therefore, inapplicable.” He failed to say how or why.

One week later, when he ruled to nullify everything done by Kano State Government since his implausible order of 23 May, Abdullahi Liman clarified the basis of the case as concerning “traditional and cultural rights which are vested rights and which are penumbral to …fundamental rights.” He alone could possibly understand this verbiage because the fundamental rights guaranteed by Nigeria’s constitution do not include any “traditional and cultural” or “penumbral” rights, whatever those may mean.

There is no human right in Nigeria to be a Kingmaker or a King. At best, a claim for such could be made by way of judicial review, not as a fundamental rights claim. But to concede that would be to admit that Abdullahi Liman lacked jurisdiction over the matter. That was not his brief.

The scandal in this case goes beyond the fact that there is no filing record to foreground or precede the order of 23 May, 2024 around which Abdullahi Liman affects judicial hyperventilation; or his invention of enforcement for rights that don’t exist in Nigeria’s constitution. According to his own claim, the hearing that preceded his order of 23 May was remote or virtual. He also says he “enrolled” the order on the same day.
It is indeed the case that the Rules of Court in Nigeria were adapted in the aftermath of COVID-19 to allow for remote proceedings in certain cases. However, there has to be a valid case filed to begin with. It is also not clear from where Abdullahi Liman procured himself the power to extend remote hearings to include remote enrolment of court orders.

Reminded that his order of 23 May was not in fact served on the Government of Kano State until 27 May, four days later, Abdullahi Liman cited a 2002 decision of the Court of Appeal saying that “anyone who is served with or becomes aware of a valid order of court should ensure that he obeys it in full.” The underlining here is not mine.

Disregarding the word “valid”, however, he proceeded to claim on 20 June that the question was whether the Government of Kano State knew of the order before 27 May. For proof, he said his order was everywhere on the social media. This was rank duplicity from a man who, only the previous week, on 14 June, refused to credit evidence that the Court of Appeal had entered an appeal against his assertion of jurisdiction, preferring instead to hurtle with malice aforethought towards a pre-determined outcome. Once he had procured that on 20 June, he adjourned the case indefinitely.

Man Visits Alma Mater, Vows to Transform it in 2 Months

Renowned Anambra industrialist and CEO of Zobis Cables Ltd, Engr. John Ezeobi, on Wednesday, 19th June,2024, paid a surprise visit to his alma mater, Ede Secondary School in Okoti, Odekpe, Ogbaru LGA of Anambra State, to assess the school's infrastructure.

Ezeobi, who attended the school from 2001 to 2003 and served as the Senior Prefect, was touched by the decaying infrastructure, particularly the school's vulnerability to flooding during the rainy season. He said he was approached by the school's owners to buy the property, but he declined, wanting to preserve the institutional legacy. He equally stated that the school harbours some part of his childhood memories and most importantly shaped him into what he is today in the society.

Despite the school being a private school, Ezeobi was moved to intervene, as the deteriorating infrastructure and environmental challenges posed significant obstacles to learning.

He has planned a two-phase project, which includes rebuilding classroom blocks, constructing modern toilets, and implementing flood control measures.

The first phase of the project is expected to be completed within two months, after which the company will move on to the second stage which is expected to gulp several million of naira.

Meet Ifebube Benson, who won Laptop as best female 2023 NECO

Ifebube Benson lived in South Africa before the 2023 National Examination Council (NECO) where she proved that adversity could be converted to the threshold for excellence for those determined to navigate through the vagaries of life.

The 18-year-old Amazon was recently gifted a brand new HP laptop by Fadaella Biscuit Company for being the best female student

The NECO Excellence award winner said coming to Nigeria for the examination exposed her to an unimaginable shock and difficulty because of lack of resources to study such as internet which left her with a bitter learning experience different from what she was used to.

“When I came here, it was a shock because the education system was different. We were on different levels, and this made it difficult for me, but being a brilliant student; though it was difficult, I had to prove myself,” she said.

The Orumba North, Anambra State-born genius made nine A1 in the 2023 NECO June/July examination where she sat English Language, General Mathematics, Civic Education, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Further Mathematics, Economics, and Data Processing.

The amiable Amazon started her academic journey at the Crawford International Lonehill in South Africa before moving to Renaissance Garden Secondary School, Ago-Okota in Lagos State. She is now a student at the University of Abuja where she is studying medicine and surgery.

She attributed her success to God’s factor in her life and hard work. “I would like to say that it is God, honestly because when I came to write these examinations, I had missed a whole session.

“I was severely behind and it took a lot of hard work. I had to drop all my social media. I had to drop off phones and internet to make sure I was putting everything into the examination,” she said.

Besides, she applauded her parents who stood by her, ensuring she had the support needed to excel during the examination.

“When I was writing my examinations my parents reduced the amount of work they gave me, and also made sure I had snacks in the house.

“They made sure there was a quiet and conducive reading environment because I have six siblings. So they really helped me to get in the mood of studying constantly, and also helping me to stay off my phone,” she recounted.

She admonishes younger students who have the ambition to excel in their examinations to stay away from social media because it can be a distraction to learning.

“I think social media can cause a student’s attention span to be reduced by constantly scrolling and checking the phone, we can become irritated after 10 minutes or thereabout of doing such a work.

Social media is a huge distraction and I advise anybody who’s going to write an examination to let go of his/her phone. I know this lyric excuse that there are resources online. Let me go and watch a YouTube video that’s gonna explain something better to me,” she noted.

The first among six children revealed that her best subject is Mathematics, and according to her, her love for the subject was a result of the academic foundation she got from Crawford Lonehill School.

She loves watching television and travelling; and would love to become an oncologist, and orthopaedic surgeon, while still nursing an interest in mathematics.

It is imperative to set the record straight: I have nothing against the creation of state but this said bill was neither discussed nor deliberated upon with me or my Constituents before being brought to the floor of the House of Representatives. The People of Orumba North and South have unequivocally rejected the idea of being included in the proposed Orlu State. The election which took place at the Enugu residence of former minister of Power, Prof. Bath Nnaji effectively brought to an end the over 10-year reign of Prof Uzodinma Nwala as the president of the group.

Addressing members of the group before the election, the Chairman of the ADF Board of Trustees (BOT), Bishop Udezuo Onubogu, stated that the election is rebirth of the Igbo Think-tank which was an outcome of the 20214 colloquium on “the Igbo question.”

The BOT Chairman who recounted how the ADF was birthed in the same home of Prof Bath Nnaji in 2014 called on all the aspirants for the various positions to see the new venture as a call to duty for Ndigbo.

Bishop Onubogu after his welcome address moved a motion dissolving the former Executive Council led by Prof. U T. Nwala, and the motion was seconded by Barr. Max Ozoaka. Immediately the former Exco was dissolved the Chairman of the four-man electoral committee, Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa took over the process and subsequently conducted the election.

81 delegates from across Nigeria were accredited to vote. After all the votes cast were counted, both the new President and Secretary secured all the 81 votes cast.

Other members of the new exco include, Dr. Jerry Chukwuokolo, Deputy Vice President; Engr. Ike Nwandu, Deputy National Secretary; Barr. Max Ozoaka, National Legal Adviser and Dr. Onyi Gbujie, National Financial Secretary.

Others are, Mazi Chukwuemeka Obinwugo, National Publicity Secretary; Mr. Arinze Nwosu, National Treasurer; Mr. Zulu Ofoelue, Organising Secretary and Lolo Nneka Chimezie, National Welfare Secretary.

Earlier in his goodwill message, Prof. Bath Nnaji who is also a member of the BOT reiterated that BOT had to step in to rejig and refocus the ADF to ensure that the original idea of its founding fathers was rejuvenated in the interest of the progress of Igboland and Ndigbo everywhere in the world. The former Minister urged the new exco members to abhor sit-tight syndrome and to realise that their election was a call to solemn service to Ndigbo.

In his acceptance speech, the new Pressident, Prof. Ukachuwu Awuzie thanked all members of the ADF for the confidence reposed on him and all the exco members. He promised that he shall make integrity and accountability the watchword of the new executives.

He said:

“We shall ensure that we do not disappoint you, we shall bring together the ADF and work for the transformation of Alaigbo.

“ It is an opportunity to serve and we are going to serve selflessly, committedly and we are going to serve patriotically.

“We shall work in consultations with the leaders, we cannot claim to know all the problems of Ndigbo, so we shall continuously consult widely so that we can lead well to the benefit of our people.

“As a people, we have an existential problem that our progress and future is threatened. So ADF will work with other organs of Alaigbo, and other patriotic associations working for the progress of our people, for our children and posterity.

More so, we shall rely on the support and assistance of all patriotic brothers and sisters for our collective success. We shall need your prayers, contacts, financial and moral supports to succeed.

Nairaland GeneralAnambra Man Returns ,repays Kindness To Roadside Food Vendor by AnambraPeople(op): 10:56am On Feb 06, 2024
Awka, the capital city of Anambra State, over the weekend, became a stage for a touching and dramatic reunion as an Anambra man, simply identified as Bishop the Hype Man, returned to the humble spot where he once sought solace in free meals from a roadside food vendor, Ms. Onyema Ekpeh.

Bishop’s journey from hardship to prosperity led him back to the female vendor, as he stormed with bundles of cash he rained on her, in reciprocation of the kindness that had sustained him during difficult times.

Recounting how it all started, Bishop said Ms. Onyema was always giving him food each time he went to her shop when he was struggling to survive. He said most times after eating he would playfully tell her that he didn’t have money and that he would pay when he had. He added that Ms. Onyema, after gazing at him, would have no option but to accept his word.

He said that this continued even to the point that the Ms. Onyema, after giving him food, would no longer care to ask him about money, knowing that the story would still be the same.

According to him, the gesture that struck him most was that despite all the accumulated incalculable debts, Ms. Onyema still went ahead to lend him the sum of N50,000 from her little savings when he requested loan from her as he was about changing environment to seek greener pastures elsewhere; even when she knew fully well that she was no longer going to be seeing him, let alone knowing when and how the loan would be re-payed.

Bishop, however, narrated that after one year without contact, Ms. Onyema started calling him, but he stopped picking her calls after having given her several assurances that he would still refund her the money; even while he didn’t know if it was because of the money that she was calling him or simply to check on him. He revealed that Ms. Onyema still remained patient with him, despite everything, and was no longer calling him since he began to decline her calls.

According to Bishop who said he now owned a club, it was in the Spirit of gratitude for such an uncommon love kindness, benevolence, and patience he saw in the woman that he decided to storm her food spot by surprise and show her love now that he has made it.

“This woman is a very good and kind-hearted woman. If we have this kind of selfless and benevolent qualities among our leaders, I bet you this country will not remain the same. She is not my mother, but she treated me like son, gave me food and money.

“She gave me food when I didn’t have, she gave me money when I didn’t have; she fed my friends. She don dey call me since last year, I no answer her; she go call me, call me, call me tire; and I no go answer her. Highest, if I manage pick call, I go tell am Madam relax, when I return… Now, I have returned. What I want to prove is simple! I just want to prove to people that good thing pays.

“It is very very important that I reward and celebrate this woman alive now that I have the opportunity, because nobody knows tomorrow. If person do good to you, appreciate am, celebrate am, and also do good to them when they are still alive, when you have the opportunity; and not when they are no more.

“Abeg give me more cash there make I birth her with money. Ọ dịbèghị̀ ọcha. Achọrọ m iji ego saa ya ahụ, ka ọ dị ọcha,” Bishop said in an interview with this reporter, Izunna Okafor, as he stretched hand for more wrap of money which he also unwrapped and continued raining them on Onyema.

Also speaking with this reporter in an interview, the food vendor, Ms. Onyema who hails from Enugu State said she was so surprise beholding the entire drama.

While noting that she started selling food since 2011, she said Bishop was one of his customers when she started new. She, however, recalled that at some points, life started becoming difficult for him that he even found it difficult to feed himself.

According to her, as a result of this, he, together with some of his friends, was coming to her shop to eat from time to time after which he would promise to give her money later but would not, only to come back again next time and order another food on credit. She said she stopped dunning him to pay her for food and even stopped expecting money from him whenever she served him food, having understood his condition; even though he was shy to explain to her.

Ms. Onyema confirmed lending Bishop the sum of N50,000 when he told her that he wanted to change environment to seek greener pastures elsewhere. She also confirmed having called him over time to know how he was faring and how life was treating him wherever he relocated to, only for him to be declining her calls, probably assuming that she was calling for her money. She said at a point he had to stop calling, to avoid being seen as a disturbance.

She, however, narrated that she was very surprised to see Bishop surface in her shop from nowhere in the morning during the weekend, begin to unwrap bundles of money and splash them on her, without uttering a word. Ms. Onyema said she couldn’t believe what was happening, until Bishop eventually began to explain after some minutes when people gathered to know what was going on, only for her to break down in tears of joy.

She also noted that she did similar thing for some other persons in similar condition, adding that she was doing it without expecting anything in return.

While Onyema spoke, more bundles of money continued to rain on her from Bishop.

In their separate reactions, onlookers and passersby, captivated by the dramatic scene, joined in admiration for Onyema’s unwavering generosity and benevolence. Their shared sentiment became a clarion call on everyone to embrace kindness and extend a helping hand to those in need. In a world often tumultuous, the reunion of Bishop and Onyema serves as a compelling testament to the enduring impact of compassion and the profound gratitude that can blossom from unexpected acts of benevolence.
