Politics / Onitsha: A City Of Broken Dreams. by AnambraPeople: 9:15am On Dec 05, 2023
Onitsha: A City of Broken Dreams.

Mike Amakeze

Ife n’eme n’ Upper Iweka. Remember that hit by Apama about Pericoma Okoye and the illegal tax collectors at Upper Iweka. The song told a story of how the tax collectors waylaid him, demanding for tax receipts, oblivious of his status as a powerful dibia from Arondizuogu. In their usual crude tactics, they lifted him up when he demanded that they return his money that they collected forcefully and took him to their office. He never uttered a word. They realized the precariousness of their position and their folly when they got to their office. They could neither lift him up nor bring him down. Pericoma defied the law of gravity. He became too heavy for their shoulders and they resorted to begging profusely. They were only relieved from their misery after they met his stiff conditions. A child is at liberty to play with his mother’s breast but not his father’s testicles. According to the song, after that incident, anybody who hails from Arondizuogu is feared by the tax collectors because the person might as well be another Pericoma and Pericoma is too heavy.
The song recorded massive commercial success because it spoke to the reality of everyday people. It wasn’t just a song. It was a grim warning, a dire prediction, often correct, of the status of Upper Iweka. It painted a gloomy picture of lawlessness and the blanket of insecurity that pervades the area. The notoriety of Upper Iweka rubs off on the city of Onitsha and most times becomes its definition. For a traveler passing through the city, the narrative about Upper Iweka and that of Onitsha are easily interchangeable.

This city has not always been this rowdy, unplanned, chaotic space. Beyond commerce, this city led the charge for adult education and literacy in the entire eastern Nigerian. Market men and women had a culture of reading. Book was a thing. Successful traders registered for night classes so they can read, write and communicate effectively with their business associates and customers from across the Niger. You can’t discuss the development of Nigerian literature without making a copious mention of the Onitsha Market Literature which came in pamphlets and novellas. It was a potpourri of life experiences and was consumed, according to Emmanuel Obiechina, by “grammar and elementary school boys and girls, lower level office workers and joournalists, primary school teachers, traders, mechanics, taxi drivers, farmers and the new literates”. People deliberately sought to remove what Okey Ndibe called “the cobwebs of the mind”.
Onitsha played host to elite schools- Dennis Memorial Grammar School and Christ the King College, both occupying large expanse of land along Oguta road. They attracted students from far and near. Their healthy rivalry led to their excellence in learning and in all round character formation. Today, so many great men in both public and private life endeavours are proud products of these two institutions. Both of them have very strong alumni associations.

Onitsha had a vibrant and rich entertainment sector. It was the home of highlife. Osita Osadebe, Celestine Ukwu, Rex Lawson, Eddie Okonta etc were the highlife ambassadors and they made Onitsha their sanctuary. Ghanaian musicians thronged the city and released countless albums most of which were in Ghanaian languages but all of which were hits. Their teeming Igbo fans simply converted the Ghanaian languages into the nearest Igbo words and sang along. One of the songs by J.A. Adofo and his City Boys Band was simply converted to “A minute oo k’ eji eyipu babe akwa”. Kofi Sammy of the Okukuseku International Band fame relocated from Lagos to Onitsha just so he can record with Rogers All Stars headquartered in Onitsha. The all time hit song “Sweet Mother” was first performed at Plaza Hotel in Fegge by Nico Mbarga and his Rockofil Jazz band before it was released under the banner of Rogers All Stars and it went on to sell millions of copies. Most of the artists perform at sold out shows and joints.

Onitsha was the commercial, educational and cultural headquarters of the Eastern region. There was an air of arrogance exhibited by both the indigenes and the inhabitants of this city hence the saying –ife eji abu Onicha erika. I was little when water from Nkisi Waterworks still flowed from the taps little. The Public Works Department was still functional and sanitary inspectors still conduct inspections. It was a well-run, bustling commercial city. Then things began to go south. The population started increasing without a corresponding investment in modern infrastructure to plan and accommodate same. The city centre became choked, and then started expanding and absorbing neighboring communities from Nkpor to Obosi, Nkwelle and Nsugbe. The once neat roads lost their innocence. Filth and dirt occupied roadsides and street corners. Slums and ghettoes became breeding grounds for miscreants. Incidences of crime assumed an alarming proportion, becoming a popular dent on the narratives of this city, a feather on its bleak cap. The exodus began. Popular businesses closed shops, worsening the unemployment situation. The city shriveled in significance. Nightfall came with trepidation. A city that used to have a vibrant night life became a ghost town once it is dusk. Entertainment became reduced to the obituary announcements from the government owned ABS.
I was here when Derico Nwamama (Okwudili Ndiwe) and Chiejina ruled the crime world. Those were the outlaws with identities and verifiable addresses, not the later day faceless cowardly goons that go with the sobriquet Unknown Gun Men. Whatever that means. Things got so bad that the inhabitants happily welcomed the dreaded Bakassi boys to sanitize the streets. Their public execution became a festival of blood and gore. Kids with impressionable young minds cheered and watched with glee while they cut off heads from the necks of human beings and set them on fire.
I come back to this city of my birth and I see those same challenges it city faced in my teenage years. Despite the litany of markets in and around Onitsha and repeated incidences of fire, there is no single fire station in the entire city. Organized means of transportation is completely absent. This city with affluence yields little in quality of life, ease and trappings of a modern space. This city used to attract and retain talents from all over the country, lending wings to their dreams. Now it is in a chokehold, with young people eager to leave for other places at the slightest opportunity. We continue to stand as witnesses to the continued drain of the best brains from the city into other parts of the country.
In the days of yore, people were eager to learn and reinvent themselves. Today, the times demand that ahia oma adighi ere onwe ya (Good product does not sell itself). The game requires heavy, intentional marketing and PR. Unfortunately, there are many businesses in and around the city that are worth hundreds of millions of Naira but neither possess an online presence nor have a marketing budget. No. 51 Iweka road used to be the most famous address in the marketing and distribution of movies. Not anymore. The Lagos boys have since taken over the movie industry, reinvented it and sold it to Netflix, while Onitsha plays catch up. This is a key reason Okeke and Sons business model does not scale.

I get downcast because of the stagnation of this city that I love, the developmental stillbirth. It keeps on giving without taking. It cries for inspiring and directional leadership. It seeks a reinvention, leveraged on technology. The dampened fire wants to be fanned into flame again. Intentional, collective progress cannot happen with the haphazard, individual approach to development. Like Lady Catherine once said, “Nothing ever built rose to touch the sky unless some men dreamt that it should, some men believed that it would and some men willed that it must”.

Politics / Trouble For Ubah, ekwunife As Ngige, moghalu, Others Shun Reception. by AnambraPeople: 5:16pm On Dec 03, 2023
Trouble for Ubah,Ekwunife as Ngige,Moghalu, others Shun Reception.

There are indications of potential issues within the Anambra APC, as prominent leaders of the party in the State like former minister of Labour, Senator Chris Ngige and immediate past Managing Director of NIWA, Dr George Moghalu were absent at the reception of Senators Ifeanyi Ubah and Uche Ekwunife. Other stakeholders who did not attend the reception include ,the current Minister of Women Affairs , Mr Ben Akabueze, Dr Chioma Ejikeme etc. The absence of these individuals, who are considered founding members of the party in the state, could be interpreted as a sign of internal discord.

An insider source told ANAMBRA PEOPLE that some of these high ranking party members were not carried along in the scheme of things.

The source said: " Ngige is the leader of the party in the State and when some people fail to recognize him as such and recognize another ,how do you expect them to grace your occasion "

Recall in the build to the last general election this year,Ngige had chosen not to campaign for Tinubu during the last presidential election, citing his neutral stance and relationships with other candidates as the reason for his abstention. Since leaving his position as Minister of Labor, Ngige has avoided discussing national issues and has remained relatively silent.

No explanation was given for the absence Dr George Moghalu, former NIWA MD and Minister of Women Affairs. Apart from these big shots, their allies too were also not present at the meeting. However, at the time the reception was going on ,Ngige was sighted at the wedding of Uju Ifejika's in lagos. This has left people wondering why a high ranking member of the APC will choose to attend a wedding instead of a reception of big wigs in his party.

Among the attendees at the reception were several returnees to the party, such as the former deputy speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Mike Ugwah, as well as lawmaker John Nwokeji and other former legislators. Notable stakeholders present included Senator Andy Uba, former Speaker in the state Rita Maduagwu, Chief Modestus Umenzekwe, Chief Dr Rose Nwankwo, the woman leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, and numerous others who also joined the APC.

Overall, the absence of Ngige and the former NIWA MD at the reception of Senators Ifeanyi Ubah and Uche Ekwunife implies that there may be disagreements or tensions within the Anambra APC. This could be further indicative of antagonistic voices or factionalism within the party, as well as a potential lack of unity amongst its founding fathers.

Politics / Ubah/ekwunife Tsunami: Soludo Mulls Joint Ticket With Chidoka by AnambraPeople: 11:05pm On Dec 01, 2023
Ubah/Ekwunife Tsunami: Soludo Mulls Joint Ticket with Chidoka

Ebuka Nwankwo

There is mounting pressure on Governor Soludo to reconsider his current deputy, Dr Onyeka Ibezim, and instead run on a joint ticket with former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka in the upcoming 2025 Anambra election. It has been reported that Chidoka, unless there are any changes, will leave the PDP and join APGA in preparation for the election.

It is believed in some quarters that a repeat of Soludo/Ibezim ticket come 2025 will spell doom for APGA considering the fact that Ibezim holds little or no electoral value with respect to the influence APC throws around in Anambra State currently.

Insider sources have revealed concerns from Soludo's team about Uche Ekwunife's move to the APC, given her strong political influence in Anambra Central Zone and the state as a whole. They fear that Senator Ifeanyi Ubah already poses a strong challenge in the southern senatorial zone, judging by the performance of his former party, YPP, in the last general election. Soludo's team believes that if Ubah is allowed to work with Ekwunife in the Central Zone without being counterbalanced by another strong force like Chidoka, who hails from a significant voting bloc, it may impact Soludo's chances of winning a second term.

According to the insider, Soludo initially considered handing over leadership to Chidoka and had discussed the idea with bishops in the Anglican communion. The source confirmed that Soludo, unhappy with the dominating influence of Catholics in the state's affairs, confided in Anglican bishops and wealthy Anglicans that he would prefer an Anglican to be his successor, which has earned him great support from affluent Anglicans.

However, due to the desperation of the APC to take power from the APGA government, Soludo's team has decided to re-strategize. Instead of bringing Chidoka after his second term, they plan to bring him in now to counteract the political alliance between Ifeanyi Ubah and Ekwunife.

The source stated that Chidoka's appeal to the people of Anambra, especially coming from a large voting bloc in Idemili, makes him the ideal candidate. It is also revealed that talks are already underway in the Party, exploring the possibility of a joint ticket, with Soludo as the governorship candidate and Chidoka as the deputy. Chidoka, who previously ran for governorship under the United Progressive Party (UPP), is believed to have a strong political foundation in the state, particularly in the Anambra Central Zone where he hails from.

Furthermore, the source disclosed that the joint ticket of Soludo and Chidoka is likely to garner support from key stakeholders in the state. However, it remains unknown how Dr Ibezim, Soludo's former running mate, will react to this development.

Senator Victor Umeh Intervenes ,Stops Lagos demolition

By Tony Okafor, Awka

The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Chief Victor Umeh has waded into the demolition of property in Lagos.

The demolition, our correspondent gathered affected mostly Ndigbo.

On Tuesday, Umeh who is the Chairman Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs, and Vice Chairman Senate Committee on Land, Housing and Urban Development visited the headquarters of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) in Abuja to discuss the fate of owners of houses in Abule-Ado Areas of Festac, Lagos state which have been under demolition.

Recall that concerned about the huge losses and the outcry over the ongoing demolitions in Abule-Ado, Umeh had earlier intervened in the Senate and also engaged the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa through the Senate Committee on Land, Housing and Urban Development (where he is Vice Chairman) on the need to halt the demolition exercise and to conduct proper investigation.

Umeh therefore proceeded to the headquarters of the FHA on Tuesday where he had very useful and fruitful deliberations with the Managing Director of Federal Housing Authority, Senator Gbenga Ashafa and the General Manager, Zonal Coordination of FHA, Barrister Hajara Kadiri towards resolving the Issues and halting further demolitions.

Part of the solutions was that terms of settlement would be worked out by the Federal Housing Authority which would be mutually beneficial to all concerned.

Soludo Abandons Police Inspector Who Fell From His Convoy To Die Miserably Without Care

MR Lucky Okey, a Police Inspector attached to Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Charles Soludo passed away early this morning after going through horrifying brain damage arising from his accident from the Governor’s convoy in February this year.

It was gathered that Mr Lucky fell and heat his head on a tarred road from a moving police van attached to the Governor’s office on official duty in the presence of the Governor and was immediately rushed to Amaku Teaching Hospital in the state capital.

Eyes witness account told our Correspondent that against medical advice that the officer should be flown abroad for medical treatment, the Commissioner for Health Dr. Afam Obidike, instead assembled two or three doctors who compounded Mr Lucky’s brain condition until he died this morning without proper care and medication to save cost of treating him abroad.

“It is unfortunate that Governor Soludo and his Commissioner for Health, Dr. Obidike who should be responsible in giving care to our brother contributed to his untimely death.

“After the shabby brain surgery carried out on my brother since he had the accident sometimes in February this year, we have been borrowing money to buy drugs for him on a weekly basis that have ran into millions of Naira.

“Sometimes his colleagues contribute money for his wife and only child for food since the salary is not enough and the Government has been owing him over three months allowances.

“We are confused at the moment because Lucky is the breadwinner of the family. Who will take care of his wife and the child now.

“My brother died a painful death because each time his drugs are exhausted you will observe he will be eating up his tongue by himself, the brother who simply gives his name as Marshall lamented.

Under 45 CEOs Summit: Entrepreneurs Receive Grants Worth Millions of Naira In Onitsha

Three entrepreneurs, Mrs Chiamaka Amubi-Onusonye, Mrs Amarachi Okpala-Onwuamaegbu and Mr. Ebenebe Bethel Christian have received empowerment grants of 1 million naira each from Mr Val Ozigbo, Pastor Sam Obiorah and Dr. Ikenna Ifejiofor respectively at the just concluded UDUF Africa under 45 CEOs Summit which was held in onitsha on Saturday.

The summit with the theme Creating a Sustainable Africa Through Active Leadership was organised by the Ultimate Destiny Uplifters Foundation (UDUF) Africa, a non-governmental organisation established to mentor young entrepreneurs and leaders.

Speaking at the event held at Federal Housing Estate Onitsha over the weekend, the former Transcorp boss, Mr Valentine Ozigbo emphasized on emotional intelligence as the key to success in every human endeavor.

Ozigbo also charged the organisers and other participants, mostly the youths, to be passionate about their endeavours noting that passion and striving for excellence are necessary ingredients for achieving success.

Sharing his personal life story, Dr Ikenna Ifejiofor, Managing Director of Ike God foods Industries Ltd, (Makers of Jolly-jolly Noodles) maintained that mindset was everything a leader needed to move from one point to the other. He charged participants to dream big while emphasizing the need to start small.

Others who also spoke during the summit, Pastor Sam Obiorah of Life of Faith Gospel Assembly,Ngozi Ezeasor, Oluwatoyin Taiwo Banjo,Dr Godson Iroh,Prof Olusegun Sogbesan of Onitsha Business School admonished Nigerian youths to focus more on skills acquisition programmes to be self-sufficient, lamenting that there are no more white-collar jobs in public offices in Nigeria.

He noted that any person under the age of 45 is highly favoured, lucky, and blessed, whether male or female because he or she is at the peak of performance season, which I call the afternoon session of life.

It is a good time to create and re-create your life. It’s not a time to follow shadows, build your life in the air, or have empty dreams. It’s a time to be intentional and catch up with destiny.

*From the age of 18 to 45, if you haven’t gotten clear on your purpose and destiny and made the necessary contribution towards achieving your purpose or reaching your destiny, it suffices to say you pass as a fool.

While confirming to be true the saying that a fool at 40 is a fool forever, Mr Ezuma urged Nigerian youths to be innovative and intentional about their future.

Revealed: How Soludo begged Ifeanyi Ubah to Praise Him before ndi Anambra at Abuja Town hall meeting

The APC new media has revealed how the Governor of Anambra State ,Professor Chukwuma Soludo engaged an Anambra billionaire to plead with Senator Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah to put in good words for him before Anambra people at his town hall Meeting in Abuja.

This was revealed by APC new media in a new article.

According to the new media office:

"Do you remember how you organised a town hall meeting in Lagos State, to purportedly raise money for security equipments after your initial declaration that sit-at-home had ended, upon your assumption of office. We remember how your declaration triggered even greater insecurity, forcing the State into more severe sit-at-home.

"Then, you ran to Lagos State like a frienghtened dog with it's tail between its legs, to beg for funds from Ndi Anambra resident in Lagos despite the fact that you take N2 billon Naira every month as security vote. In addition to this, you keep and spend at will hundreds of millions of Naira, allocated to the 21 local governments in the State. This is the major reason you have renegaded on your own promise to conduct local government election in Anambra in your first six months. Today, your self appointed local government council members have been in office for over one full year. The tragedy is that the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission -ANSIEC, has not been constituted by you and there is no hope that you will soon constitute them so they can conduct the local government election. Is the APC or Distinguished Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah, the reason you have deliberately failed to keep your own promise?

"Dear Professor, can you recall that while you were begging for funds in Lagos , the Senator Representing Anambra South Senatorial District immediately set to work like a real man and used his personal funds to purchase security equipments ( CCTV cameras, walkie-talkies, drones, vehicles, motor cycles etc.) worth over 500 Million Naira, which he used to build a security architecture that pushed back the insecurity in Anambra South Senatorial. At a time when the senatorial zone was the epicenter of the insecurity in the state, as a result of its shared borders with Imo and Abia States.

"Seeing how the Lagos town hall meeting flopped while your funny call on Ndi Anambra to bring home, their businesses got roundly ignored and laughed at, it is understandable why you are grappling with straws, leaving substances unattended.

"Having received intelligence report that the Abuja townhall will also be ignored, we have it on good authority that you reached out to Senator Ifeanyi Ubah through a prominent Anambra man who is a major player in the electricity sector(seen standing beside the Senator in the video), and begged him to assist in hyping the governor before Ndi Anambra resident in Abuja that will attend the event. You begged Senator Ifeanyi Ubah to also convince the other senators from Anambra Central and North, who reluctantly attended at the comradeship prodding of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

"We have it on good authority also that Ifeanyi Ubah gladly granted your request to put in good words for you before Ndi Anambra. You voluntarily acknowledged Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s security concept all over the state with the funds raised from the townhall event as well as Improve on your general performance since assumption of office.

"Ifeanyi Ubah was not the only person that was willing to give you the benefit of doubt to succeed; many Ndi Anambra were also on this table, given that you had served in the past as a former one term CBN governor and being a professor of economics, it was just not thinkable that your failure can be this loud and all encompassing.

"Dear Professor Suo-lum Oyibo, To date, you have yet to purchase a single pin as security equipment or vehicle as you promised.

"You are yet to commission one completed road project in almost two years in office.

"You are yet to do anything in Okpoko as promised.

You are yet to conduct local government elections and merely hands TC chairmen meagre sums from the over 100 million naira a month that is meant to go to each local government, from federal allocation.

Since you entered office, we have daily been regaled with stories of brutalization by thugs collecting revenue for you, as well as in-fighting amongst the two top officers in the revenue house accusing each other and your inlaw of corruption and feeding on the sweat of Ndi Anambra whose expectations that you are a messiah have been thoroughly dashed.

"Today the trending question at every gathering in Anambra presently has become, who will succeed Soludo?

"Our dear Anambra is now a state where the commissioner for finance resigns out of frustration. Anambra is now a State where stories of your Commissioners begging for alms on the streets of Awka abound while you take N2 billion Naira as security vote every month and personally handle the execution of shoddy road contracts by proxy using your in-law and a few others. You have completely captured the finance sector of Anambra State with both Commissioner for finance and the Accountant General as your brothers.

"That is why road contracts in Anambra are mostly done by little known companies like Uwakwe and sons Ltd, while Abia in less than six months, is using a frontline construction company Julius Berger.

"Dear Prof, there are even reports of quarterly allocation of 600 million to the office of your first daughter for her fashion shows from the state government coffers.

"Is this part of why the former commissioner of finance was not allowed to handle his financial duties and he had to resign in frustration?

"We are also aware that you have commenced building a befitting Government House at Isuofia, with tax payers’ money.

"Was this part of your electoral promises to ndi Anambra?

"You are yet to give account of the monies so far donated by a few to the state security trustfund so as to encourage the numerous other sons and daughters of the state to donate too.

"Recall that Senator Ifeanyi Ubah organised the same Anambra sons and daughters, and they willingly donated over half a billion Naira and built hospitals at Awka and Nnewi, for Ndi Anambra during the Convid-19 Pandemic. Dear Prof, as I am sure you are aware, everything was done transparently and took barely six months.

"You have 2 weeks to publish the names of those who donated to the state security trust fund and what you intend to use the funds for.

"Governor Mbah of Enugu didn't need fundraising to buy helicopters, security vehicles, and the rest for the state. He used his security vote, and it is not up to the N2 billion Naira monthly that you pay yourself.

"Those Anambra sons that gave you the benefit of the doubt and made donations to your security trust fund, are still waiting to see one tangible thing that the state government will do with the funds.

"They have only seen you insult late Prof. Dora Akunyili, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, Mr. Peter Obi, Chief Obiora Okonkwo of United Nigeria Airlines, GUO Motors and recently Senator Ubah since he joined the APC and set off panic alarms in your APGA cum Atiku's PDP camp.

"Ndi Anambra love and trust Senator Dr Ifeanyi Ubah CON. We shall be demanding an open apology from him, if you do not keep your own end of the bargain and start working for the state as you promised him.

"Setting up propaganda units and shamelessly campaigning for second term so early in your first tenure despite your "start and quench" clueless governance style, so far, will not deter or hoodwink Ndi Anambra from seeing through your charade.

"The million dollar question that begs for answers is; if you are doling well , will you need to trend a video of where Senator Dr Ifeanyi Ubah, CON, is speaking good of you?

"Is your Atiku/PDP mask of an APGA government doing enough to reassure the people that you know what you are doing or you are busy exchanging banters with the real lovers and stakeholders of the State in clear exhibition of your cluelessness?"

Mother of 3,Ezinne Anieto Emerges UNIZIK Best Graduating Student in Pharmacy.

A mother of three and wife of an anglican priest, Mrs Ezinne Anieto has emerged 2023 UNIZIK best graduating student in pharmacy.

Ezinne exhibited great academic excellence, securing a remarkable 4.8 CGPA, the highest among the graduating students of Pharmacy at UNIZIK.

Ezinne's success serves as an inspiration to many, especially mothers who strive to balance their academic pursuits and family responsibilities. In a world where women still face stereotypes and bias, Ezinne's achievement is empowering and reassuring, as it shows that women can break barriers and achieve great things. Her dedication and hard work represent the true spirit of feminism, shattering the notion that marriage and motherhood are hindrances to career growth.
