Nasiru Shua’ibu, a professor in the Biochemical Parasitology Department of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has developed a new malaria vaccine to prevent high rate of death from malaria fever. Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Zaria, Kaduna State on Tuesday, Mr. Shu’aibu said the new malaria vaccine was different from others currently in use. Mr. Shu’aibu, who is currently working with the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Japan, said the result of the research on the new vaccine would soon be out for Nigerians to use. “In a simple term that a layman can understand, the content of this malaria vaccine research is difficult, but let me try if I could simplify it, it is called DNA Vaccine. “It is a new technology for discovery and delivery of vaccine against any infectious disease that was developed in the early to mid 1990s. “The DNA of the malaria parasite was extracted and the portion of the DNA that is tested to be a good vaccine candidate is subjected to molecular biology methods which are used to produce a lot of the DNA,” Mr. Shu’aibu said. According to him, the amount of DNA from the malaria parasite was very minute in quantity and to expand the quantity, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) was used. “Then a method of cloning is now used to insert the DNA into a vehicle that will carry the DNA into either animal or human body. “It is then injected into the body of the animal or human and it eventually enters the cells of the animal in the same way a virus enters and infects cells. “The injected DNA now uses the cells in the body to produce chemicals that will prevent malaria from infecting the body,” Mr. Shu’aibu said. He said the vaccine was different from any of the licensed vaccines like polio and other EPI vaccines. Mr. Shu’aibu added that the approach was also different from the other malaria vaccine (RTS,S/AS01) that was likely to be licensed but the goals were the same, to control and eventually eliminate malaria. Nigeria, with an estimated population of over 170 million, constitutes the highest malaria burden in Africa and in the world. Mr. Shu’aibu doubted the figures from the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) indicating progress in containing the disease. “I still doubt; the tools currently used to fight malaria are not sufficient to have a substantial and sustained impact that is needed to resolve the malaria crisis in Nigeria,” he said. Mr. Shu’aibu said the need to monitor the growing resistance to anti-malarial drugs and insecticides. He said if not checked and documented, it would jeopardise years of global public health success and investments in malaria control. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/210800-nigerian-scientist-abu-develops-malaria-vaccine.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter

We celebrate the first Nigerian to win the prestigious FBC Manby Bowdler Prize for the Best Performing Student in Electronics and Communications Engineering. A plausible achievement of one of our own, a proud Sokoto Son, Mr.Nasiru Garba Bello. He is a recent graduate of Electronics and Communications Engineering with First Class Honours degree from the University of Wolverhampton, United Kingdom. The 24 year old Sokoto guru has multiple experiences as an intern in Web Programming at Open Ximdex Evolution Sevilla ,Spain and participated in Royal Navy Undergraduate Leadership Programme and Hartee Hack Event (Hartree Center, STFC) at Daresbury United Kingdom, all in the course of his stay as a student. However, the journey of Mr. Nasir began here at home in Nigeria, where he was studying Chemical Engineering up to first semester, year two, it was where he also began acquiring the knowledge of engineering mathematics, Physics (Properties of matter and electricity) and lab report writing at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Some of the inventions of Mr. Nasir are staggering hence could not escape the attention of those around him. He is good at simulation of PID controllers on Matlab to investigate and improve system performance and has also designed and built a wireless energy monitoring system as his final year project among others. Jargon right? Yes it's a bit technical! But it's also worthy of knowing that Mr Nasir has received an invitation to work with the a European multinational cooperation and a renown airplane manufacturers, Airbus. Perhaps the airbus invitation is as a result of a report and presentation he wrote and presented on De Havilland Comet's BOAC flight 781 crash and its impact on commercial aviation. The direction which Mr Nasir is taking makes us recall the Successful Chevrolet designer Mr. Jelani Aliyu, another Sokoto boy who designed the widely celebrated Chevrolet Volt. However, Mr. Nasir did not accept the airbus invitation because he prefers to further his studies for now. The people of Sokoto are indeed blessed with the likes of Mr Jelani Aliyu and Mr Nasir G Bello. Recently, the Sokoto State government granted scholarship to Mr Bashir Aliyu who is identified as a potential car designer by Late Nasir Zarumai. Mr. Jelani Aliyu will always serve as an inspirational figure not just to the people of Sokoto State but Nigerian at large. He and the upcoming ones must understand that they have a task ahead of them to encourage such innovations and creativity among our youth using various means available to them. Sokoto State has indeed proven capable of producing innovative and creativity minds. The Sokoto State Government and other stakeholders also must continue honouring such achievements to encourage other young Nigerians. Although, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has indeed showed commitment in embracing talent and creativity in the singular action of sending Mr. Bashir to the U.S. We encourage The Digital Governor to do more in taking us completely into the digital age. The NYCN in Sokoto is willing to assist and support the government is such commitments. The Youth of Sokoto State are proud of your Achievements Mr Nasir, we look forward to your meaningful contributions to the future of our State and Country in general. https://www.nycnsokoto.org.ng/single-post/2017/08/27/Celebrating-a-Young-Achiever-Nasir-G-Bello-The-Next-Jelani
