If I may ask, why do non Hausas start Hausa threads?. Almost every thread about Hausa culture are started and finished by non-Hausas. Is it not a shame unto Hausa people. |
What have you done about it or what do you intend to do to achieve your set goal. Your idea is good but actions speakes louder than words. 1. What have you done?. 2. What do you want to put differently?. Answers please. |
ifyalways:Your post reminds me of the film--ULAGA. Do you know where I can buy a copy of that film as it is not in Dalston and Peckam. |
You mean incestuous on the part of the fetuses, right? Or, like, the 2 genders in one womb symbolized an inbreeding happened in the past? Anyway, thanks very much for that. I never knew why. Most of us read it for the first time in Things Fall Apart, and didn't research it further. I believe the Ndigbo are a proud people with a rich culture. We all have incidents of one form of sacrifice or another in our past. I hesitate to call any of us barbaric. The oyinbos kill milions of babies every year via state-sanctioned abortions and no one calls them barbaric.
Superstition was very rife in the 19th century Igboland and Africa. What our fathers believed in then is not what we believed in today. They so much believed in the santity of ALA, as a result they will go to any extent to keep it sacred. But killing of twins was not Igbowide, only a handful of clans practiced it then including my own very clan. It was prominent in the Ibibio-Efik areas as a result Mary Slessor devoted her time fighting against this obnoxious tradition in that area. At the moment, we should be thankful to christianity for all the good tidings it brought to mankind not just in Africa but the entire universe. |
hackney:No bros, he was not a member of the Atlanta team in 1996. Hay his soul rest in peace. |
alj harem1:Port Harcourt (Igwe Ocha) is included in both maps. But mind you, a small portion of Igwe Ocha is not Igboland but Kalabari. The colonial masters acquired land from both Igbo (Ikwerre) and Kalabari (Okrika) chiefs. |
alj harem1:Mary Slessor started her mission in the areas that the evil tradition was so widely practiced, e.g Efik-Ibibio areas. |
This is the undisputed map.
|
fstranger6:Please stop chatting as in the above so that people well-versed in Igbo culture will come into this thread and help out the poster. Be civil please. |
ifyalways:Iwa Akwa is initiation into adulthood. No gender prohibitions though predominantly male oriented.

Killing of twins was a barbaric tradition practised by many Nigerian groups not just Ndigbo. Even within Alaigbo, not all the Igbo clans practised the so called tradition. I happen to come from a part of Alaigbo where that tradition then existed. But thank God for the beauty of Christ and advent of Christianity, this evil practice was abolished 130 years ago (Mary Slessor). The Igbo culture as a culture that is at the forefront of Tropical African cultures is so unique but not static. A lot has changed in the last 150 years including killing of twins. In my part of Alaigbo, only twins who come into the world as male and female were thrown into the evil forest. Because natives then believed it was an incest. Like a boy sleeping with his sister. The natives never tolerated cases of incest either as adults or babies. |
@ Komando7. Long time. Nice to note that you are back. Happy new year. |
alj harem:Sorry replying you late. Surely there are Igbo organisations in Borno state but I haven't got their contacts. However, am in touch with the Onye Ndu Ndigbo in Mallam Fatori (Kukawa LGA), Borno state. |
banom:This idiotic thread is so uncalled for. It is an outright stupidity to insult Mike as in the bolded because you disagree with him. Grow up, lil boy. |
There is no common ancestry amongst Ndigbo. Ubulu Uku, Nri etc trace their ancestry from Israel. Some communities trace their ancestry from Bini, Igala, Aro, Orlu, Okigwe and Ngwa. While others trace their roots from nowhere. |

Imo state is a one party state (PDP). All the L.G Chairmen, state assembly members etc are drawn from PDP. In as much as Ohakim is unpopular, but there is no party strong enough to usurp PDP. |
ChinenyeN:That Ezeigbo issue has been concluded as no victor no vanquished. Sometimes you feel there is the need for one as Beneli pointed out in his post. I remember during the Jos crises some time ago, The Eze in Jos saved lives, provided shelter, food, healthcare and other facilities to Ndigbo in Jos. Do we do away with such men?. |
@Beneli, thanks for your post. There is a lot to learn from that wonderful piece. Especially to target the Igbo kids in the U.K. At the moment, an arrangement has reached an advanced level with BEN TV on how to air some of our programmes. Am so glad your wife and kids are making progress in learning Igbo. |
davmor:Odorom anya na ina akwado igba boolu. Onye nwe anyi nonyere gi. In England, the laws of the land is not kind on beginers. You may have to try your luck in other European countries. To qualify for work permit, one has to play between 60-65 of your national team matches within two years. You national team must be within 60 in FIFA ranking scale. The only way out is that one has to come in as a special talent. For example Mikel Obi. Yakubu, Yobo, Osaze, Kanu, Nsofor and Olofinjana obtained work permits because they are established at the National team. While Etuhu, Anichebe, Sodje, Aluko etc are British residents. Am sure this arrangement counts you out. But do not be discouraged, it is not so in other European countries. Also, being a student in England will not qualify you to take part in any professional activity e.g football. The Igbo cultural support Network which am one of the leaders chiefly caters for Ndigbo who are in the U.K. Nwannem, let your hopes not be lost. I discussed a similar thing with one young and upcoming footballer from my village sometime ago. He was playing for Orji Uzor Kalu (OUK) FC of Umuahia then, but now he is in Turkey and doing well. Forget money, concentrate on your game, surely assistance will come from all angles to you. |

I was able to read and understand what you wrote respite the fact that I don't have any formal training in Igbo. @OP, davmor, and Andre Uweh: Do you know of any I youth organizations in New York. I know of some in the US but not specifically in New York
No idea at the moment but will make an enquiry soon.I call upon all Igbo organisations, stakeholders, forums etc in the diaspora to follow our footsteps in The U.K |
Promotion of Igbo language requires urgent attention. The president-general of Ohanaeze is very concerned in this department. During my visit to him last year at his Ogwashi Ukwu residence in Delta state, The first issue he raised was on how Igbo language isbeen promoted in The U.K. As a consequence, we The Igbo Youths U.K responded by establishing an Igbo language lessons for interested Igbo people. w |
davmor:Nwannem, oga diri gi mma. In case if you intend to come and study in The U.K, the socio-cultural organisation that caters for Igbo Youths in the U.K is: IGBO CULTURAL SUPPORT NETWORK (www.icsn.co.uk). The writer here is one of the pillars of the organisation. |
