I have seen your ensuing argument with Trevor012 as well and he is right. You have forgotten that City chased Koulibaly even before they got Laporte and only went to Laporte after the Koulibaly deal did not work out. Then they went for him again after the 2019/20 when the manager had to use Fernandinho and Eric Garcia as CB pairing for City because Kompany retired, Stones was depressed and Laporte was injured after game 2 or so. There is no way to spin this one chairman, Koulibaly was clearly City's first choice. They proved it in back to back years.

Diaz did not cost more than Koulibaly or Kounde. Napoli asked for 90M for Koulibaly when City only wanted to pay 70M and Sevilla were saying 70M or so for Kounde when City wanted to do 55M or 60M with add ons. Diaz buy out clause was 65M yes, but City were able to trade Otamendi and 50M for Diaz. So no Diaz was cheaper essentially and ended up proving to be far better than both Koulibaly and Kounde.

Sorry to chime in brother but your article and the parts you highlighted are only saying Conté did not want Matic sold to a direct rival. It is clear that Conté wanted to sell the player but he did not want him sold to United. People who are being objective know City's problem. Once they like a player, the selling club always inflates the bill because everyone assumes City have money to spend. It is always one market for City and another for everyone else. Look at Kounde for example, where Sevilla refused to accept City's 65M or so, yet they were very eager to accept 50M or less from Chelsea. That is why City only seem to be successful when they try to buy a player from a club that have a buyout clause in place. It is the reason I always said I hated getting involved in all these player valuation arguments because I know they are largely disingenuous especially when City is involved. From Walker to Rodri to Grealish, All successful City transfers were about paying the buyout clause. Look at Harry Kane as additional evidence. If RM had come for the player, Levy would have sold him easily for maximum of 100M. But with City he even went as far as saying 200M or nothing. Now they have a disgruntled player who will not be willing to break his bones again for the club.
