Myself and my family have always been upfront about family members in the US, and it hasn't hurt our applications in the past; the only thing I would recommend is that you are sure your family member is upright in terms of residency and what they do in the US before including them on your application.

All the best.

hallabuddy:
Good day all, pls I’m asking his for a friend.
Does indicating that you have family in the US help or hurt your chances of visa approval. Also is it wise to use their address as where you intend to stay in the US on the DS-160? Note that they live in the same City as the location of the school. Thanks

I think it's best you wait for the other I-20 before scheduling your interview, as I don't think you will have access to edit the I-20 information once your interview is scheduled.

Unlimitedurch:
Thanks @Aniomaman81 for the response. Sorry I didn’t relate my question well. I’m expecting I-20 from a university where I got funding. That is my preferred I-20. But at the moment in other to book early appointment date, I want to use the SEVIS fee details from another university where I have no funding but the I-20 is readily available. I’m asking if I can still edit it when the other I-20 is available?

Never heard you had to pay after receiving your visa. Who gave you this information?

How much do one pay after his or her visa has been approved?

If you have received your I-20, then your SEVIS number is on there, I don't think SEVIS number changes. What's your referred I-20?

And on CGI, yes, you can always change those details around SEVIS and University code as well.

Unlimitedurch:
Please guys is it ok to use the SEVIS details on the I-20 I have at the moment to book appointment on cgi? Then change it when my referred I-20 is ready but this would be before I go for the interview. This is bothering me because I didn’t see any provision to edit SEVIS and university details on cgi-update profile

Yes, this has been the norm since COVID-19; just go for your interview with a signed clear copy of the I-20 to the interview.

The name you use on your visa application must match the name on your passport.

You can still put married and have ready the reason why you haven't done the name change, IF that question comes up; my wife's 2 previous US visas were under her maiden name, but we indicated on her applications that I was her spouse and sponsoring her trips on her application. Just have your marriage certificate and the newspaper clipping, but they almost never ask anyways.

Okunolarebe:
Good day everybody

Please I am new here and I need advice

I got admission to Saint Louis University in USA, I used my father's name for all my documents also I applied for mpower loan and I used my father's name.

My question is I am married and I just did my change of name inside newspaper please which name can I use in my visa application.

I am married with one daughter.

If I put my fathers name on my visa application then I have to put single or can I put married, I have marriage certificate but my international passport is having my fathers name.

please I need advice on the name to use for my visa application. Thanks.

I haven't applied for an F-2 but I would think the SEVIS number is only issued to the F-1 candidate as the principal applicant.

Let's see if someone who has gone down the F-2 route has better knowledge on this.

Tskillz:
Hi guyz, I want to create my profile and book an appointment for F2 visa but I am a bit confused with the following;

STUDENT AND EXCHANGE VISITOR PROGRAM DETAILS
SEVIS Number
University Name:
University Zip Code:
Principle Applicants Name:
Principle Applicants Visa Status:

My question is which SEVIS number should be entered ? Main applicant (F2) or principal applicant (F1)

Thank you

Got my dates in Abuja and from the feedback I see on here, it seems Abuja releases more dates periodically.

ciarasommy:
Exactly what I am afraid of, I know three people that applied EA before the 60 days and got theirs approved. Also I know someone that applied within that 60 days and get a decline even with a reminder. Please did you get earlier dates for Lagos or Abuja cos I have been checking that of Lagos and no show of any possible earlier dates.
TravelRe: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 16 by Aniomaman81(m): 5:06pm On May 13, 2022
Yes, you are meant to fill a new DS-160 form as the information entered for an F1 visa will differ from the B1/B2 visa. Please don't go for your interview without filling out a new DS-160 form.

Olasic:
Hi Everyone.
Please i need answers. Help my life please..
I applied for a B1/B2 visa last year and got denied. This year i got admitted for a doctoral program. I just went ahead and scheduled an appointment without filing another DS160 form. The earliest date i saw was in october even though my school start date is sometime in fall. Please, am i supposed to fill another form given that i couldn't update the one i had filed already when i applied for the B1/B2? Thank you
TravelRe: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 16 by Aniomaman81(m): 2:54pm On May 13, 2022
My EA was declined for not applying within the 60 days, and EA tab was taken off; I had to keep on searching before I got an earlier date. I would advice you don't take the risk and wait for the 60 day mark before you apply, in the meantime, keep on searching for earlier dates.

Buchi1539:
Please what are the criteria for applying EA? Must I wait till it is 60days to school resumption?

Have you added your kids to your I-20 as that would be the first step, as long as they are included on your I-20 by the school, you can contact the embassy support desk for support in adding them as dependents for the F2 visa, and yes, you can should include it on your DS-160 since they will be mentioned on your I-20 anyways that you have accompanying dependents.

Let's see if the gurus in the house have other ideas.

Deksy:
I already applied for my F1 visa but stated that i would be travelling alone. Due to some circumstances, i have decided to go with my children and apply for an F2 visa for them. How can i modify my visa interview date so that we can go for the visa interview together? Is it okay if i fill a new DS 160 form to reflect that i would be travelling with them as dependents?
N.B. The 2 children are minors, under 14.
TravelRe: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 16 by Aniomaman81(m): 10:49am On May 13, 2022
Contact your dedicated customer relationship person at MPower if you haven't received the support letter in your email. It comes pretty quickly once you have been pre-approved. And when they are asking for your I-20, it means they have pre-approved you and simply waiting on the I-20 to send the terms of the student loan. Get in touch with them, it's probably 'lost in transit' somewhere.

JesusIsAMuslim:
Hello everyone!

To Mpower loan beneficiaries, please I have a question. I got good news message from Mpower saying my support letter is available, but I'm yet to receive that. I have so far submitted my financial statement and financial forms to the school waiting for my I-20, but my school keeps rejecting the financial statement. When I carefully read, I realized that I will need the support letter to get the I-20. How long do you think it takes Mpower to issue the support letter? They keep asking me if I have my I-20 already but they have not done everything on their part. Should I be worried or it takes a little bit to receive the support letter? I think it carries the amount I will be supported with right? Please do help answer this if you have any experience with them. Thank you.

I would advice you hold on a bit and apply as a transfer student with your transcripts, you definitely won't be able to get into the fall 2022 term unless the school is still accepting international student applications at this time; make the time lost count.

ChikaFay:
Hi guys
I need help ooo
I just saw the news about the extension of strike and omo I was heartbroken
I'm considering applying to schools in US
But the issue now is laying my hands on my transcripts, since schools are shut
Would you advice I apply as a freshman?
I have been able to complete only 2 years of university since 2018.
Please what's your advice for me
TravelRe: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 16 by Aniomaman81(m): 9:45pm On May 07, 2022
MPower sends the loan directly to the school, and the school will take your fees and tuition balance, then the balance like you said, will be paid into your account or a check issued to you.

The time it takes to get approvals depends on what documentation is required of you, so the earlier you begin, the better especially if you intend to use the loan for resumption in Fall 2022.

Evaowokotomo:
Please I would love to know more about this mpower loan. If I borrow let’s say 16,000 dollars in which 10,000 dollars will be used for the first year. The money will be sent to school right? Will the school remove the amount for tuition and then give me the rest for accommodation and living expenses or what? I just want to know how? How long does it take to approve the loan also?

Thanks

You will list each other on your various DS-160, however, you will have to decide which of you will add your child as a dependent on your I-20. My understanding is that dependents for the purpose of this process are those who will be applying for the F-2 visa, but I'm not entirely sure I'm correct, maybe someone else might have a different opinion.

Theflint1:
Yes, we both will be studying full-time. When applying for the separate F1 VISAs, do we list each other as dependents?
TravelRe: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 16 by Aniomaman81(m): 7:31pm On May 04, 2022
Your question isn't quite clear; will you both be studying full-time? If yes, then you both need to apply for separate F-1 visas, however if it's just one person studying, then you can add the other spouse and child as dependents on your I-20.

Theflint1:
Hello house, for a husband and wife with a single child looking to travel to the US for schooling, is it advised they apply as a family or separately with the other party/child listed as dependents?
TravelRe: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 16 by Aniomaman81(m): 3:42pm On May 04, 2022
This response seems more like something from a textbook, why did you actually choose that course and what role would it play in your career path? Let it speak to current issues in the country, I really don't think we have intersections between immigration and criminal justice in Nigeria, but I might be wrong.

I don't know if you can eradicate and eliminate some of the issues mentioned, but you can definitely work with non-profits that are in that space to bring about some change, and maybe before you go for your interview do a little more research as to which NGOs work in that space in Nigeria at the moment, to help better define your response.

I don't know if this helped much but we can talk better if you require more support.

Gid29:
Okay Thanks
Can you please help me take a look at this
*Question: How will the course be able to help you?
Ans: With this degree I will be able to eradicate the criminalization of sex, gender & sexuality. Eliminate the criminalization of public health issues and also promote fairness at the intersection of immigration & criminal justice, Encourage equitable sentencing and also foster an environment for respecting children’s rights.

Have you heard the saying, 'Quit while you are ahead' ? That's the advice I would give to you at this stage. In an earlier post, you said the sillier the questions gets, the closer the person is to getting a job from you.

I don't know the HR professionals whom you've worked with who recruit the wrong guys and end up 'destroying the whole job' but I hope it isn't the HR team at your current organisation; you have put your Linkedin name on here and you should really be mindful of what you put online, if you are truly a professional.

How personal can you go with questions at an interview before it becomes offensive, uncomfortable or downright against labour regulations? You can get away with it in Nigeria but in some countries, you will set up your firm for a law suit because of your indiscretions. Any professional knows that drinking on the job is gross misconduct which can lead to dismissal, so how does their alcohol intake outside of work affect their performance on the job? The average professional in the UK goes to the pub after work in the UK, so if someone takes a pint everyday, that makes them unable to perform in their role? How do you judge someone's temperament by the 'personal questions' you ask them at the interview? Do you understand there are psychometric tests which help bring out those traits these days, rather than you putting your organisation in trouble by asking what would really be 'silly questions'?

You really need to stick to what your profession is and stay out of HR and recruiting, because I would be worried as your employer with the calibre of people you must have recruited over the past years based on your utterances here; I'm a HR Director and my advice would be to keep details of these violations you are committing on behalf of your organisation offline...The Internet never forgets.

Quit while you are ahead...

Adebimpe1:
A Senior HR professional who think asking personal questions are wrong really needs to buckle up. Organizations differ, and questions relating to the job being interviewed for are to be asked, as the case may be.

But then, you don't just ask questions relating to the job alone. It is quite advisable to get to know the candidates you're interviewing. No one will ask you about your family problems, how many times you've been with a woman, or other nasty questions. But questions relating to alcohol, drugs, temper-based, psychological, emotional and stress-related questions are often times viewed as personal questions.

Most job seekers do not actually understand what personal questions are. A candidates that sees "how often do you take alcohol" questions as being personal and decline to answer, will certainly get drunk to the plant, gets himself killed and put the lives of others at risk.

As a professional in the HR, you will not want to recruit someone with anger problems. Most times, candidates lose the chance of getting a well paid job because they refuse to answer certain question. Most candidates even sees "why did you graduate with 2-2 when your mates had 1st class" questions as personal. Not all interviews require job-based questions. As a professional. I only need to ask you two questions that only people very experienced in the field will know. You guys in the HR often ask unrelated questions, and ends up recruiting the wrong guys who ends up destroying the whole job.

As for my post, I used the word "silly" to emphasize on it being used by the young man who replied me. The questions that I have mentioned above are seen as "silly" by most Nigerian job seekers. I was like that until I lost several offers.

Finally, I represent my company in good light, even though you're fighting hard to believe that.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Monster HR Personnels; A Nightmare For Job Seekers. Share Your Experience by Aniomaman81(m): 2:53pm On Nov 08, 2016
The majority of HR professionals we have in Nigeria tend to be quite unprofessional in their approach and those in recruitment are even worse, they feel candidates are at their mercy and treat them with total disrespect!

I'm a HR professional, so this isn't some outsider and when I moved back to Nigeria, it was so glaring that we do need a change in that professional, but sometimes I don't blame those "HR Professionals" though but the people who put them in those positions; you employ someone straight out of school with training in sciences and engineering and put them in a "HR Consultant" role, the one that baffles me is how we bandy the word "Consultant" around so easily...Seriously how do you expect such a person to deliver with the same emotional intelligence as someone who has the requisite training and experience in the profession.

I remember my interview with a popular bank when I just returned to Nigeria 5 years; the then ED (He's risen higher now) saw my profile on Linkedin and sent me a message to ask if I was interested in a job within his HR team, I readily accepted and he asked someone in the team to contact me. I think the Senior HR Managers were probably pissed that my CV came from the top, however I didn't know the ED from nowhere. After a humilating interview, where they didn't ask the most remote questions to what my role was meant to entail, I was shocked when a friend who I didn't inform of this interview called to tell me how I performed and that they didn't want to offer me the job; I was shocked at the lack of confidentiality with the HR Managers.

Competency based approach of interviewing is a good way of seeking out answers from candidates and not asking them "silly questions" as that doesn't give you any indication of what this person is bringing to the role; For the Bros who boasted about it on this thread, I do hope your organisation doesn't come across your post.

HR professionals in Nigeria need to step up though and make the candidate and colleagues experience a lot better for all, it takes nothing away from you!

helovesme:
i stress again. you are the a very sensible and reasonable man. people really underestimate the strain that poor finances can have on a marriage.

i just laugh at some of the comments here. even the bible says that ''a man that cannot take care of his home is worse than an infidel''. i find it laughable that some men will actually decide to be 'worse than infidels' or some women would rather prefer their husbands 'to be worse than infidels' rather than leave home to go to another country to hustle legitimately and provide for their wife and kid(s).

even the isrealites had to leave egypt for cannanland which was the land flowing with milk and honey. why would any one stop their partner from finiding their own 'cannanland' and escaping 'captivity'?
I can almost bet that those against it are mostly not married; I don't think any man is happy being away from his family but what's the alternative to that. When you are not there with the family, but can make sure they are comfortable, nothing beats that at all please. Some people who work in war torn countries are not there because they love being there and risking their lives, but because they would rather give their families the best and see those smiles on their faces.

I'm so sure quite a number of ladies here would drive their husbands crazy if they are home and jobless. Not everyone who lives outside Nigeria is a hustler, some actually have international careers which means they are always on the road helping in emergencies. Please when your husband gets a UN job in Iraq or Afghan earning about $10-15k per month, tell him to stay at home so you can both be looking into each others' eyes and cuddling up at night.

Seconded... Great minds are calculative and predictive... they plan for future event and take minor sacrifices to avoid considerable losses. OP is not a progressively thinking individual... culturally, we see that all the time, even when your father is around, everyman who visits your place and is related closely to your dad is "your Daddy".... I grew up in that family described by OP and I have nothing but RESPECT for my Father and Admiration for my mother. In the course of your life, as a man, wherever life takes you to provide a better FUTURE for your children, you go. Animals do it for their offsprings, Birds do it for theirs. The sad truth is that the same kids you stay with will eventually resent you for not giving them a better chance. I praise all Fathers who have gone far and wide in trying their best at creating a better future for their family. OP aren't there successful families whose wives cheat with the husband being present in Nigeria. In a country where there are more hotels than Churches and Mosques, I'm very sure the people making use of them aren't just single, lonely, married women.

OP just so we are clear here, whenever the opportunity arises for you to go out of your country for a better Job, that will automatically transition to a better life for you and your family, Please do not take it. and tell your wife too.. you won't take it... if she is half a virtuous woman.. she will beg you to take it.

@Randyhot
I totally agree with the both of you and I'm currently in the same boat anyways.

If my wife wants to cheat, she can go right ahead and do that, but it won't stop me from ensuring I get the best for my daughter by taking up expat opportunities as they arise; Hardship locations pay better and it does translate to a better life for your family, so I don't get what some people are saying on here. I would rather be out here working, than taking positions which would not be able to cater wholly for my family in Nigeria, just in the name of 'not missing' those moments.
