PoliticsRe: Boko Haram, Soldiers In Gun Duel For 4 Hours by anointedf(op): 9:57am On Jul 07, 2011
Meanwhile, former Governor Ali Modu Sheriff has apologised to the sect over his role in the brutal military crackdown on the radical Islamist group.

“I wish to publicly tender my apology to the Jama’atu Ahliss-Sunnah lidda’awati wal jihad, I might have offended in the course of discharging my duties as the executive governor of Borno State.

“It is human to err but divine to forgive,” the former governor said.

Last week, former governor of neighbouring Gombe State, Senator Danjuma Goje, and Bauchi State Governor Isa Yuguda also apologised to Boko Haram for any role they might have played in rights violations against its members during the 2009 uprising when its leader was killed.

PoliticsBoko Haram, Soldiers In Gun Duel For 4 Hours by anointedf(op): 9:55am On Jul 07, 2011
FOR hours yesterday, Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, turned a war zone as soldiers engaged members of the radical Islamic sect, Boko Haram, in a gun duel.

Streets were deserted as security agents went on the offensive to track down members of the sect.

Many residents were seen leaving Maiduguri to escape being hit by stray bullets.

The counter security measure was sequel to an early morning bomb explosion around the Maiduguri Prisons, targetted against a military patrol team. Many soldiers were injured in the attack.

Another explosion went off minutes after a second patrol team left the spot.

People ran helter skelter as Boko Haram members shot sporadically to escape being arrested by the soldiers.

Some of them ran into houses, scaled the fences and disappeared. Soldiers stormed all the houses in search of them. Many residents were injured in the melee.

The Commandant of the Military Task Force codenamed ‘Operation Restore Hope’, Major-General Jack Nwaogbo, confirmed the incident.

He said: “One of our patrol teams was targetted this morning (yesterday) by hoodlums around new prison, Maiduguri.

“Three soldiers were injured and there was no civilian casualty.’’

He disclosed that a suspect had been arrested in connection with the incident.

“We have arrested one of the perpetrators, my men are in the process of cordoning off the entire area as part of the initiatives to contain the activities of the hoodlums,” he said.

Streets around the city were blocked for a “cordon and search operation”.

Traders at the Monday Market - the biggest market in the North-East - left their shops opened as they ran for dear lives.

Operatives intensified the stop and search where motorists were ordered to raise their hands at check points and others dragged out of their cars by fierce-looking security agents.

Said one of the motorists: “The style adopted by the security personnel is so dehumanising as they asked us, including our wives, to raise our hands at every checkpoint”.

In Abuja, the President of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Joseph Daudu (SAN), and human rights activist and lawyer, Mr. Festus Keyamo, have faulted the State Security Service (SSS) on its decision that over 100 members of the sect arrested by security agents will not face prosecution.

The NBA boss argued that it was not the responsibility of the SSS to determine whether the suspected members of the group should be prosecuted or not but the constitutional duty of the Attorney-General of the Federation to speak on whether the suspected members should be prosecuted or not.

Daudu, who spoke at a press conference on the forthcoming 1st Criminal Justice Reform Conference (CJRC 2001) holding this month in Abuja, also said that negotiation or granting of general amnesty to the members of the sect should not be the way-out of the quagmire, stressing that implementation of the provision of the law must not be compromised.

NYSCCorps Members Beseige Nysc Over Posting To Borno, Other States by anointedf(op): 9:47am On Jul 07, 2011
HUNDREDS of prospective 2011 batch ‘B’ National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members posted to the northern part of the country yesterday lay siege to the headquarters of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with a view to obtaining redeployment to other parts of the country.

The corps members who would be sworn-in today after the registration exercise closes by 12 a.m. this morning, were seen at the entrance of the NYSC headquarters with some placards reading, “We don’t want to go to Bornu or Bauchi state;” “We don’t want to be killed like others” and so on.

The NYSC public relation officer was unavailable for comments on the development, as she was said to be on tour.

But a director in the NYSC who spoke with The Guardian on condition of anonymity, reiterated the position of the scheme on the matter, saying the prospective corps members should first resume for registration and the orientation course, which will last for three weeks, at wherever they were posted after which they could apply for relocation.

The director added: “If they are not registered, then they cannot be redeployed. We posted 95,000 corps members this time, if we stay here saying we are redeploying them, what time do we have for the orientation?

But The Guardian learnt that almost all the 633 corps members posted to Bauchi State have reported to the Wailo Permanent Orientation Camp preparatory for the swearing in ceremony scheduled for today.

Bauchi State Coordinator of the NYSC, Ibrahim Tizi, yesterday expressed the preparedness of his office to conduct the orientation exercise, assuring that all arrangements have been made to ensure that the corps members had a good and memorable stay in camp.

Tizi stressed that adequate security arrangements have been made to ensure that all the corps members were secure while at the camp and when eventually posted out for their primary assignments within the state, saying: “Bauchi State is a safe place to be.”

PoliticsAcn Govs Resolve To Pay Minimum Wage by anointedf(op): 9:39am On Jul 07, 2011
Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, gover-nors have resolved to pay the N18,000 minimum wage.

A source at the meeting of the governors, held in Ikeja, Lagos, Wednesday, disclosed that the governors resolved, after long deliberations, that being people-centred and labour-inclined administrations, the governors could not but pay the new minimum wage.

Hosted by Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, other governors at the meeting were Abiola Ajimobi, Oyo; Rauf Aregbesola, Osun; Adams Oshiomhole, Edo; and Ibikunle Amosun, Ogun.

The source said that the decision of the ACN governors to pay the minimum wage was hinged their belief in the National Minimum Wage Act of 2010 which makes the payment mandatory for the states of the federation.

Family‘i Didn’t Kill My Wife: She Stabbed Herself To Death’ by anointedf(op): 9:42am On Jul 06, 2011
Eleven days after, Mr. Kolade Arowolo, who was suspected to have killed his wife, Titilayo, a banker with Skye Bank, Marina Branch, Monday denied stabbing and killing the deceased.

He said contrary to public opinion, the deceased stabbed herself to death.

The suspect was said to have killed his 29-year-old wife in cold blood at their No. 8 Akindehinde Street, Isolo, a suburb of Lagos, on Saturday, June 24.

According to him, he had been having serious issues with the deceased over their marriage before that fateful day that she ended up killing herself, after stabbing him too.

Recalling what transpired between them that day, Arowolo said the deceased was acting under the influence of demons that took over her body and turned her into another person entirely.

He said: “The woman was possessed that day and while we were quarreling, she went into the kitchen and brought out a knife with which she overpowered me and then began to stab me all over my body and head.

“The next thing I saw, she started stabbing herself repeatedly with the knife while telling me that she was tired of the marriage and that since I did not want to let her go, she will kill me and then kill herself.”

PoliticsSouth-west Govs Converge On Lagos Today by anointedf(op): 9:11am On Jul 06, 2011
LAGOS — A one-day meeting of the six governors of the South West region will hold in Lagos today.

Usually reliable sources said the close-door meeting to be hosted by Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State will be attended by his Action Congress of Nigeria’s counterparts from Osun (Engr. Rauf Aregbesola), Ogun (Senator Ibikunle Amosu), Oyo (Senator Abiola Ajimobi) and Ekiti (Dr Kayode Fayemi). Also expected is their Labour Party equivalent from Ondo State, Dr Segun Mimiko.

According to sources, “the meeting is imperative since all the states in the South-West are under the ACN, with the exception of Ondo State which is under a Labour Party government that may also be considered “progressive” (and which actually took power from the Peoples Democratic Party with some support from the ACN leadership).

“There is also a widespread expectation within the region that the party and its governors will cooperate to spread the type of development witnessed in Lagos State across the entire South-West.”

Sports20 Years After: Remembering Muda Lawal, Nigeria’s All-time Best Midfielder by anointedf(op): 9:04am On Jul 06, 2011
TWENTY years ago, exactly July 6, 1991, when the news of the death of ex-Green Eagles midfielder, Mudasiru Babatunde Lawal, filtered through, most people, at first, did not believe that the ever-smiling Muda could be dead. He was young, hale and hearty, neither was he involved in any automobile accident, but before the dusk of that fateful day, the news of the demise of the midfield maestro was confirmed.

Though known as Mudasiru Lawal throughout his playing career, the late midfielder’s name was actually Mudasiru Babatunde Agboluaje. The name Lawal came from his mentor, who introduced him to football. When he started playing football, he was referred to by fans and playmates as Muda, Lawal’s boy (Mudasiru omo Lawal). Hence, the adoption of Lawal as his surname; the appellation that stuck to him till his death.

Known for his creativity, composure in the heart of the midfield and knack for goal scoring, Haji Shiru as he was fondly called, never went to any football academy before he broke into football limelight in Nigeria. Formerly an automobile mechanic, the late Muda Lawal began his football career with the then IICC Football Club of Ibadan at the age of 21 and had his playing career span 16 years. He started his career in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital with IICC, then moved to Stationery Stores FC of Lagos, and Abiola Babes FC of Abeokuta, before returning to his first club which had been rechristened Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) Football Club as player/ assistant coach.

According to football analysts who had the opportunity of watching him live, Nigeria has not produced another player in his class. His contribution to the game made the Confederation of African Football (CAF), in 2003, confer on him a posthumous award for football development on the continent. Then, he still held the record of five consecutive appearances at the African Cup of Nations, the biggest biennial football showcase in Africa. This simply means that Muda was on top of his game for 10 years that he usually made the list for Nigeria's final team in the days when selection of players into the national team was based purely on performances.

Except the Federal Government removes petroleum subsidy, the quest to encourage the establishment of private refineries in the domestic economy will remain a mirage, the Managing Director of Oando Plc, Mr Wale Tinibu, has said.

Tinubu, who said this on Thursday in Lagos, at the company’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), remarked that the nation had so far expended about N8billion on subsidy for petroleum products this year, an amount huge enough to build two refineries.
