jimyjames: You mean the 70 cows sungo killed and left the herdsmen? Don't mind the empty chest beater. Instead of finding out the science behind lightning killing cows, he is there bleating like a goat. How exactly did lightning kill 323 reindeer in Norway? Herds are more vulnerable to lightning strikes
Lightning during a recent thunderstorm in Norway killed a herd of 323 reindeer — 70 of them calves — making it one of the deadliest strikes ever. Hunters in a remote area discovered the bodies last Friday, according to the Norwegian News Agency.
We usually hear about lightning striking people, but it does kill animals, too. Two scientists at an Australian research institute have found that everything from seal pups to wild turkeys to elephants and giraffes can be killed by lightning.
Was this a freak accident, or is it common? And how does this happen? I spoke to John Jensenius, a lightning safety expert from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, to learn about the science behind these deadly herd strikes. (This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.)
Angela Chen: First, how likely is it that it really was lightning that killed those reindeer? Is there a way to know without having seen the strike directly?
John Jensenius: It isn’t that unusual to see farm animals, or wild animals such as reindeer, being killed by lightning. Of course, 323 is a rather large number, though we’ve seen reports of 654 sheep being killed in one spot.
Animals do tend to group together in storms and huddle under trees. If lightning strikes the tree or somewhere nearby, the entire group can be killed. We don’t know how common this is because it’s hard to track, though usually it’s herds of 10 or 20 animals that get killed.
In the case where the animals are huddling under a tree, oftentimes you’ll see some visible signs on the tree, though you may not see any visible signs on the animals themselves. In this case, it’s hard to know where lightning struck based on the pictures, but there may be an animal among the dead animals that has visible signs, like a bit of charring on the skin.
How did lightning kill all of those reindeer at once? Did they need to be touching for this to happen?
When animals or people are in groups, most are being killed by the ground current. First, there’s a direct strike — this is what most people think of when they think of lightning — that hits the tree or maybe the ground nearby. The energy then spreads along the ground surface, and if you’re anywhere near that lightning strike, you absorb it and get shocked.
Lightning goes up one leg and down another. Animals are more vulnerable because their legs are spread out more, so the ground currents travel more easily in their bodies. It doesn’t matter if they’re touching, or exactly how close they are, it matters that they were all in the area hit by lightning. Ground currents are the thing that’s responsible for the most lightning deaths and injuries in both people and animals.
How far can the ground current travel? When are you safe?
That’s one question we’re often asked, and it’s a difficult question because it depends on a lot of factors, including the strength of the actual lightning strike.
In this case, the animals seem to be in an area that was 50 to 80 meters in diameter and on a hillside, which gives you some idea that lightning can travel a good distance and still be deadly. Lightning doesn’t always travel deep into the ground.
What exactly is it about lightning that kills these animals?
It’s the electricity going into your body. It passes through the nervous system and your nerves, and the deadly part is that it stops the heart. In the case of people, many can be revived with CPR if tended to immediately but with reindeer, it just would have stopped their hearts.

larryking540: I understand brother ,but we are all giving brain and it's to think ,seee nigeria issue isn't something difficult to solve ,but we all see it from another angle , blaming the white man for stealing from us ,,,,he didn't steal from you ,there was an exchange of resources .... I'll tell u a story ,,,
Governor ibori ,he was once a governor of Delta State ,he was arrested I think 2009 in UK for money laundering (when u take a handful of foreign currency to another country) he took nigeria money and converted the money to dollars and set out to uk ,,,is that not wickedness?
He was able to byepass the nigeira system by lobbying some cash into security officer hands , because they don't know the meaning of money laundering (it is the fastest way to destroy the economy of your country )
The moment he arrived uk, thinking because he was once an immediate ex governor he will be given prefiential treatment bro ,,the next thing is "please sir can u open your bag " u know the rest bro
Na 8-9 years he spend inside prison boss in UK ,he got released last year and this is what surprised me "DELTA STATE THREW A BIG WELCOME PARTY FOR HIM FOR 7DAYS "
BRO WHO CON BE OUR PROBLEM MAKE U SIT DOWN THINK AM na illiteracy day worry us or we just refused to learn how the economy of a country works ....

U and I kw the answer is probably NO You too get sense and patience to dey explain like this. I hope that more of us understand wetin dey happen and wake up instead of pointing fingers at others instead of holding our own personal persons tight for the destruction of our lives. https://newswirengr.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Cartoon-9.jpgwww.nairaland.com/attachments/2174510_nigeriansmobmentality_jpegd710c25fa577a4f0fb35da579ff1eb3d |

Bonaventura: Growth, deliberate change and development are the key ingredients for a country to rise beyond its situation.
Nigeria started experiencing all of these immediately after the 2007 General election and was growing steadily. The late president Yar' Adua, having acknowledged the failure and flaws in the election that brought him on board embarked on an electoral reform. And that was a leap!
In 2010 at the height of Yar'adua's illness saga when the likes of the then attorney General Mike Andoaka opined that the president could rule from any part of the globe even on a sick bed, the National Assembly said no, stepped in and through the "Doctrine of Necessity" brought Jonathan on board. And that was a giant leap.
Fast forward to 2015, Goodluck having allowed Yar'adua's electoral reform to be the guiding principle not only appointed and allowed Jega to preside over the election (He never knew Jega before his appointment) despite repeated calls for his sack, but lost the election and quietly handed over to the opposition. And that was a giant development.
The present government emerged to pomp and pageantry, with much expectation. It took months to constitute a cabinet and 4 years for blaming the previous governments. And that was a stagnation!
In 2019, Chief Justice is removed, elections are marred with violence, brazen rigging and turned to war. A fourth winner is becoming a number one winner, insecurity is becoming a norm, Innocent Nigerians can no longer travel to America. And that's a retrogression, backwardness, wickedness and inhumanity! Before 2007 and after 2015 are united by one fact- two former military dictators posing as democrats. The difference is clear as 7Up. |

This lead to Ogun State people to overwhelming vote against anything that has to do with him even in the last elections. You don't know what you are talking about. Babadee1900: Bros I was just going to rant about battery issues now. I hope you have gotten a better battery.
Last week Sunday I borrowed a guy my car battery to start his car and I have not had peace since then with my battery. Now I understand Why the guy spent two hours at crown estate car park without anyone to borrow him battery (I know he spent nothing less than two hours because I saw him on my way to Awoyaya, coming back he was still there, took another trip to Abijoh from sky mall, he was still there)
The following day my battery started misbehaving, I used my neighbors battery to start it and went out. Going back home at night the thing just went off in the middle of the road before Jakande first gate, called LCC towing service to come tow it off the road while waiting a guy stopped to ask what’s up, I told him battery issue, he was reluctant to remove his battery but later gave me. I left, following day I took it to total sangotedo to charge, it has been there since until yesterday when I went for it, got home, the battery can’t even crank the engine.
I just got home from where I went to price a new battery now, 75amps Everstart is 27k while chinko is 23k. My battery that got spoilt us just two months old
If your battery is bad and you know it, don’t hit the road! Was the two months old battery chinko? Nice advice in your last sentence. |

A305: To get the best out of this deal.
Let him pay 25k(camry) You take care of servicing, maintenance and all repairs even if it is battery head.
I see the market rebounding soon and a upward review of remmitance by car owners if the ban on keke and okada persists. Until then, To get the best out of this deal. Stick to the above. E-hailing stakeholders need to join the lobby of LASG to make the ban permanent and total for all areas of the state. |

Mcy56: Very glaring you can't see the bigger issue here. Anyway I don't reside in Lag for your info but could just imagine the sufferings imposed on masses. Good day! Below is someone who thinks out of the box to support an overall good policy and probably lives in Lagos to understand what's up. LOGOBELT: Since Sunday, Lots of Lagosians have been passing through hell just to get to their destination, this is due to the Ban on Keke and Okada recently made by Lagos State Government.
Some Lagosians think its a wise decision while some think its not. Having read so many comments online as regards the issue, I came across a Step that can actually help us to save the Trekking Stress and Price Hike on Commercial Vehicles.
Ban is only on Keke and Okada not on Vehicles. Why not use UBER or BOLT to get to work? I know what you are thinking, its expensive right?
This is what you should do,
1. Order for a ride in group, like if you live in a compound where you have other tenants going to working everyday, you guys can come together in two or thee, order a ride and Share the Payment.
2. If your compound people won't work, join with your friends in the street, church, mosque or any friends around, book a ride together and share payment.
3. If you have someone in same compound that own a car, join them early in the morning, to convey you, if they will accept.
This is just few.
I just pray PETROL become SCARCE too, so that everybody will be in this, both those who own Vehicles and those who don't. |
