I see that you are a very dumb human being. There is just no way a region in Nigeria will contribute 0.00 to the national government. Are there no revenue collection in those areas or do you think it is only oil money that is shared as allocation every month? You people should stop this oil priority of a thing, and it won't take you anywhere, when agriculture was the major export commodity, 1 naira was equal to 2 ponds until self seekers came and abandoned it. The way you are going you need to go back to secondary school and learn more or you are privileged to have a phone, explore before posting |

The qualification scandal that has enveloped the senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District at the upper chamber of the National Assembly, Dino Melaye, has deepened. Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria said it only offers B.Sc. Geography and not B.A. Geography as reflected on Melaye’s statement of results. But Melaye’s Bachelor of Arts statement of results has ABU logo. Documents obtained exclusively by Saturday Punch through painstaking and thorough investigations showed that the embattled senator has a Bachelor of Arts certificate in Geography from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State. The senator, apart from bagging a third class as shown in the statement of result (image below), also possesses a diploma certificate from the University of Jos. However, the senator only has a statement of results from ABU. And not only that, checks at the university revealed that it only offers B.Sc. Geography and not B.A. Geography as reflected on Melaye’s statement of results. Melaye’s trouble began on Monday, March 20, 2017 when an online news medium, Sahara Reporters, in a tweet alleged that the senator did not graduate from ABU for his first degree, against his claim that he studied Geography in the prestigious institution. The news medium also alleged that Melaye, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory, bribed his Head of Department, who assisted him to forge his transcript. In a series of tweets via its Twitter handle, @SaharaReporters, the online news medium said some lecturers in the Geography Department insisted that Melaye did not graduate from the department and that his name was not on the graduation list because he failed five compulsory courses. Following the report, which gained traction speedily, Melaye dismissed the allegations, daring the news medium to sue him if it had authentic evidence to back its claims. He took to his twitter handle and wrote, “Sahara Reporters, please sue me and ABU if it is true that I did not graduate from Zaria. Tell Magu (EFCC Chairman) to arrest and prosecute me.” Melaye also boasted that he was currently a student in ABU pursuing his seventh degree, adding, “Go round all the UNIS (universities) I attended in digging more.” A day after the news broke, Melaye, while speaking on the floor of the Senate, also addressed himself as an “authentic graduate” of ABU. Meanwhile, when ABU was contacted to verify the conflicting information, the institution’s Information Officer, Adamu Mohammed, promised that the institution would come out with its position on Wednesday, which it failed to do as of the time of filing this report. Amid the controversy, documents revealed that the senator had a statement of results with the logo of ABU. The statement of results read, “This is to certify that Daniel Jonah Melaye having completed an approved course of study and passed the prescribed examinations as, under the authority of the Senate been awarded the Bachelor of Arts (Geography) with Third Class honours.” The statement, issued by the Office of the Registrar, Academic Office and dated February 3, 2000, was signed by B.B. Mshelthlila. There are, however, certain discrepancies that beg for more clarifications. For instance, in the statement of results, his name was given as “Daniel Jonah MELAYE.” However, checks by one of our correspondents on https://abu.edu.ng/ revealed that Geography is in the Faculty of Science and not the Faculty of Arts as reflected in the statement of results. Also, in the senator’s NYSC discharge certificate, which was issued on July 8, 2001, his name read “Melaye Daniel” and not Daniel Jonah as shown in the statement of results. Also, in the diploma certificate issued to him by the University of Jos on August 3, 2006, his name read “Daniel Dino Melaye.” He was issued an Advanced Diploma certificate in Law, Security and Conflict Resolution. He finished with ‘Lower Credit’ on August 3, 2006. However, in his Senior School Certificate in 1992, his name read ‘Melaiye Daniel Jonah O.’ with Melaye being wrongly spelt. In the result, he had P8 in English Language, P8 in Mathematics, P8 in Geography, P8 in Chemistry, C5 in Christian Religious Knowledge, P7 in Economics, C6 in Biology and B3 in Agric Science. When contacted again by a correspondents on his mobile telephone on Friday evening, the Information Officer, ABU, Mr. Adamu Mohammed, sounded hostile. “Please, this is not official time; call me tomorrow, thank you, goodnight,” he said and hung up. It will be recalled that in furtherance to his defence, Melaye had reportedly claimed that he obtained degrees from the prestigious Harvard University, London School of Economics and Political Science and a post-graduate degree from the University of Jos. But in a swift response to an enquiry, Harvard University, in a statement from the Registrar’s office, on Thursday noted that Melaye was not a graduate of the institution as he only completed a week-long leadership seminar in November 2016. The London School of Economics equally responded on Thursday, saying there was no proof on the institution’s database that Melaye obtained any degree from the school. But on Thursday, he filed a N5bn libel suit against Sahara Reporters at a FCT High Court. Meanwhile, given the Senate’s decision to investigate the allegation and the uproar the report had generated, Melaye had since taken to the social media to exonerate himself of all the allegations. Moments after he filed the suit, he took to the social media to post pictures of the cover and certification pages of his Master’s project, and a group picture of his days as a corps member, even though he was the only one not in uniform. He wore a white T-shirt and blue shorts, adding that he served in Kaduna State in 1999. The caption on the picture read, “ABU 99 set at NYSC camp in KD. Me in blue shorts.” Also, on Friday, Wikipedia, had edited Melaye’s profile to include ‘Certificate Scandal’, which briefly chronicled the issues surrounding the ongoing certificate brouhaha.. The Benue State Commissioner of Police, Bashir Makama, has exonerated Fulani herdsmen from the ongoing killings in Benue State, the nation’s acclaimed food basket. The police boss warned that no one should rope the herders into the lingering crisis rocking Benue for years now. This comes days after the state witnessed another heavy bloodbath in Zaki Biam when gunmen stormed the community and hacked over 52 persons to death. Although, no one has claimed responsibility for the gruesome attack, residents believe that the bloody incident was perpetrated by Fulani herdsmen. Reacting to the claim while speaking on a live programme on AIT, Makama identified ‘criminals’ to be behind the attacks. He said, “I repeat, the current massacre in Benue State has nothing to do with the Fulani herdsmen. The actors are criminals who are determined to cause terror to the unsuspecting innocent residents of the State.” Few days ago, Makama had warned Ortom to stop chasing away Fulani herdsmen from Benue State, affirming that the country belongs to everybody, including herders. Gov. Ayo Fayose of Ekiti state has made a passionate appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene forcefully to restrain Presidency officials and other appointees endangering our democracy and making a mockery of the nation. Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, the governor decried the incessant acts of impunity by Presidency officials, which he said have become alarming, and the pettiness that attend serious matters of state, which he said has become ludicrous. “Governance has been reduced to a theatre of the absurd. These appointees of yours are needlessly and embarrassingly flexing muscles and are heating up the polity; they appear to be having fun and regaling themselves at the expense of the nation. The economy has collapsed and the people are suffering. There is hunger and anger never before witnessed in the land. “Yet, Presidential appointees are preoccupied with trivialities and inanities. Wearing of uniform has suddenly become a Supreme Court matter. Why a man who will not wear uniform went to take a uniformed job beggars belief. How someone who has so little respect and scanty regard for an organisation like the Nigeria Customs Service should be made to head the same organisation must baffle right-thinking Nigerians. “In other societies where people have a sense of decency and decorum, people with such irreconcilable differences would honourably resign their position. “And where a government finds itself unable to effectively govern, as we appear to have here on our hands, it behoves the head of that government to do the needful. “Mr. President, let it not be said that you have lost grip of your government. Nigerians are beginning to believe, as a statement of fact, your wife’s allegation that a cabal has taken over your government. Your defence that your wife belongs to “the other room” now rings hollow in the ears of Nigerians. “The saying is that he who appoints can also disappoint. Your appointees are your creation and it is an aberration when they become greater and more powerful than you. Mr. President, the tail is wagging the dog right now. You must take effective and firm action to reverse this ugly and unwholesome trend. “I am also the head of a government and I know how it works. The ‘consortium of presidents’ around you, as Nigerians now derisively refer to those ‘powerful’ and larger-than-life appointees of yours who take delight in riding roughshod over the polity and desecrating the hallowed chambers of justice, must be cut to size. If you need help, Nigerians are ready to queue behind you on this issue to put an end to your appointees’ shenanigans. “Mr. President, I, Ayo Fayose, volunteer to help you in this regard. As a state governor, I cannot brook a tenth of what you are taking from your appointees. None of my appointees can disrespect and disparage the Ekiti State House of Assembly like your appointees are doing to the National Assembly. “Did you listen to what a distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic said this week on the floor of the red chamber; that for the 59 days that you were away on medical leave in London, your appointees were gentle and behaved themselves and there were no killings in any part of the country by rampaging herdsmen; but now you are back and the troubles are back with us again? We all prayed for your quick recovery and swift return to office. Must we now regret doing so? Fayose then warned the President to note that Nigerians are discerning and the wool cannot be pulled over their eyes any longer. Their patience, he added, is fast running out. The Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, has said that “true Nigerians” should tell their leaders when they are wrong. Sanusi stated this while speaking at the 10th memorial lecture of Kehinde Sofola, with the theme ‘The Role of the Legal Profession in Nation Building: the Nigerian Context’. He also said that federal character should not be used as excuse for nepotism, but should be based on merit. “The issue of federal character should not be an excuse for nepotism; it should be based strictly on merit and not on family or ethnic sentiments,” Sanusi said. “As we live today, we must understand that it is our duty to respect the various institutions of our country. “We cannot sit and watch as spectators as our institutions are being destroyed; to be a true Nigerian we must learn to look at our leadership and tell them where they are going wrong”, he added. He also frowned at the infringement on child rights, saying that “the Sharia Law requires you to first seek the consent of your female child before giving her out in marriage.” “No religion permits infringement on the rights of any child. You find children in the streets hawking when they should be in school while some female children are even forced into marriage,” Sanusi said. Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has described former Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume as ‘ a Boko Haram suspect.’ Melaye made the allegation on the floor of the senate yesterday while reacting to Ndume’s call that the Upper Legislative Chambers investigate the claims that he did not graduate from Amadu Bello University, ABU, Zaria. The Kogi lawmaker is currently facing a certificate scandal, after it was reported that he did not graduate from ABU as claimed. Against this backdrop, Ndume raised a point of order, asking the Senate to probe the allegation that Melaye did not graduate from ABU, making reference to newspapers’ publication including that of DAILY POST. But in response, Melaye insisted that not only did he graduate from ABU, he also has a degree from Harvard. Ndume had said, “During the 4th Assembly, Salisu Buhari was accused of certificate forgery; he was investigated and determined. After that, in the 5th Assembly, Bello Masari was accused of certificate forgery (secondary school); it was investigated and was cleared. In the 6th Senate, Dimeji Bankole was accused of not having NYSC certificate; it was investigated and he had to show his NYSC certificate. “Now, that brings me to the second matter. In the National Assembly, here in the Senate of the 4th Assembly, Enwerem was accused and it was also investigated. Wabara was accused of collecting bribe and it was investigated and determined. So, a lot of precedences have been set. Now, the second matter of privilege affects my colleague, Sheikh Dino Melaye, and it is in the Punch of today (Tuesday) on Page 10; I have the newspaper. In Punch, it says, ‘Dino Melaye in first-degree certificate scandal.’” Responding to Ndume’s claim, Melaye said, “I and here to respond to the issue raised by the Boko Haram suspect (and) senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Ali Ndume. I want to say, to me, it is a welcome development. “Democracy is about investigation and no senator is above investigation. To me, it is a welcome development and it will finally clear the air on all the malicious and vindictive allegations. “To say that I did not graduate from ABU is to say that I am not a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. ABU is a very prestigious university in this country and it is not possible for one to be running a master’s programme in the university when one did not graduate from a university. I have successfully completed one and I am doing the second one. “I want to announce that this is the eighth degree that I am pursuing. I am also a graduate of University of Abuja, where I did Masters in Policy Analysis. I am a graduate of London School of Economics and Political Science. I am also a graduate of Harvard University. The course I am pursuing now will make it my eighth degree.” “Definitely, in the interest of justice, I will excuse myself from the consideration of this matter except when invited for questioning. “I have my admission letters, results, certificate of discharge from ABU. Not only that, I was the Student Union Government President of ABU. On three occasions, I was the most popular student on campus.” Source : http://uncova.com/senator-ali-ndume-is-a-boko-haram-suspect-for-asking-senate-to-probe-me--dino-melaye |
A Bill for an Act to provide for the Prohibition of Facial Mutilation, Offences, Prosecution and Punishment of Offenders on Tuesday passed second reading in the Senate. The Bill is also for the Protection of victims under threat of facial mutilation and other related Matters. Sen. Dino Melaye (APC-Kogi), who sponsored the bill, said that there was no doubt that Africans of old used tribal marks as a means of proper identification. Leading debate on the bill, Melaye said in those days, members of the same village, tribe or lineage had the same tribal marks. Melaye said that the hometown and lineage of a child or anyone with tribal marks were immediately identified, while outsiders who did not have such marks were also spotted. He further explained that parents also used tribal marks to lay credence to the legitimacy of their children. However, the lawmaker said “all these reasons cannot be scientifically proven, and hence cannot enjoy the support for this harmful practice’’. “The irony of these marks is that it makes victims subjects of mockery by friends. Imagine someone being called a tiger simply because of the thick cheeks resulting from facial marks. “ These people have been subjected to different reactions. Some have lamented the marks that are bequeathed on them as generational inheritance. “ Many have cursed the day which this dastardly act was performed on them. “Many of the grown adults have confessed that the most terrific debacle of their lives is their tribal marks. Some have become eunuchs because of this stigma. “Imagine a boy in the class of 25 pupils carrying a tribal mark. His mates will call him the boy with the railway line. They are emblems of disfiguration. “Some of them have developed low self-esteem and most times treated with scorn and ridicule including rejection by the female folks. “The reactions of people who interact with them say it dampens and lowers their spirit,’’ he said. Melaye stated that besides the health implication of the practice, it was an infringement on the rights of children, adding that every Nigerian child deserved the right to live. According to him, it is time a law is enacted to stop the dastardly act, as the popularity and acceptance of facial marks are waning. “People now prefer that their identity cards remain in their pockets not faces anymore. “Long before the awareness programme on Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), many people, mostly children who were subjected to tribal marks had inadvertently been infected with infectious diseases. “Sharp instruments used by locals were not sterilised leading to risk of AIDS, including Hepatitis B and C,” Malaye added. Melaye said the bill, when passed into law would help to check the act, which was a sign of man’s inhumanity to man in a country as great as Nigeria. He called on his colleagues to support the passage of the bill. Contributing to the debate, the Chief Whip, Sen. Olusola Adeyeye commended Melaye for coming up with such an important bill. According to him, many children have suffered stigmatisation as a result of the practice. Adeyeye described the act as evil, adding that if it was for the purpose of identification, there was no way any parent would not identify their children without tribal marks. “In the 21st century, there is no need to argue that either because of religion or custom someone would use sharp object on their children just for identification. “The Constitution provides that the primary function of government is protection of lives. “It is disheartening to note that children who have not been tested to know if they are short of blood are being made to lose blood. “In the 21st century, not only this chamber but every chamber in Africa should rise up to this occasion to stop the pains being inflicted on our children,” he said. The Chief Whip called for stiff penalty to deter others, adding “our generation must permanently stop that reproach’’. “ I pray no child will have the kind of mark I have on my hands. This should be banned and we will proscribe severe penalties for both the parents and the so called surgeons,” he added. The Minority Leader, Sen. Godswill Akpabio equally supported the bill, saying it was a welcome development. “In those days, people wanted it because they were from royal homes, but these days it is no longer in vogue. “The international community will be happy we rose to this occasion, so I support this with all my heart. “It is a violation of the rights of children. The child has no option and can’t fight back. Outside the infection, pain can generate something else and lead to insanity. “If we have a law already in existence, we should merge the bill with that of female genital mutilation because they are similar,’’ he said. He also called for stiff penalties for offenders to serve as deterrent to others. The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over plenary, said the bill was commendable in view of what children from some parts of the country were being subjected to. “I am aware that under our constitution, especially Section 34 (1) forbids torture in humans and degrading treatment. “This is no doubt inhuman, and it is our responsibility as lawmakers to add flesh to the bones of our constitution. “On a day like this, I am proud of the senate and I believe that when it goes through the second reading it will go to the committee and return as quickly as possible. “This is so that we pass it and ensure that it is implemented as quickly as possible to save our children from this inhuman degrading treatment,’’ he said. The bill was subsequently referred to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters to be returned to senate in four weeks. The National Leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has stated that it would study the memo sent to President Muhammadu Buhari by the governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, stating that it was his (El-Rufai’s) legitimate views. The APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and the National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, who spoke to New Telegraph on the memo, stated that given the number of pages and the issues raised in the memo that the National Working Committee of the party would need some time to study it. According to Odigie-Oyegun, the party would make its comments public after studying the memo. The APC National Chairman also stated that the views of the governor were legitimate as it concerns Nigerians. He said: “We will study it publicly and comment later publicly. “We thought it was a private memo to the President but we will look at it and if we have any suggestions to make, we will make them later. It concerns Nigerians and with legitimate views, which he has expressed. We will see how it concerns us, the party and the nation and if there is need we will comment on it subsequently.” Also, in his reaction, the APC spokesperson said: “We are just studying it and we will respond very soon. It is a 30-page memo, therefore we have to study it conclusively”. Source : http://newtelegraphonline.com/news/apc-well-study-el-rufais-memo-buhari/ |
