Politics › Re: Border Closure: Benin, Niger Economies Under Pressure by Area4Area: 5:53pm On Sep 15, 2019
chikitobabe:
The Government knws Nigerian has not gotten to a level of self sufficiency, why close the boarder.?
They would hv used it to generate money for the country by placing import charges on goods brought in frm there.
Out right closure has led to inflation and it's all on the common man.
What does this government actually want us to do.everyday Nigeria is sinking deeper into mess and we only see there achievements on the media.no good road,no transparency in govt.nothing is working at all.
Honestly without God on our side....Nigeria is heading to a colossal doom.
Most of you don't understand things.

The FG didn't ban importation of rice, it only placed it among goods that importers won't be given subsidized dollars to import. So they must source for their dollars in the open market.

The FG increased the tariffs and duties on imported rice through our ports, this was to discourage imports and encourage local production by farmers thereby creating wealth and jobs for those into rice production.

Importers seeing that importing through neighbouring countries and smuggling into Nigeria was cheaper decided to go for that option.

Who loses or gains?
Loss

Loss of tariffs and duties to our neighbours,
Low price of imported rice discourages local farmers from expanding production,
Unemployment.

Gains

Asian rice farmers smile to the bank, they make more money and pay taxes to their home governments, more employment too,
Our neighbours make money as well because of the tariffs and duties Nigerian importers pay,

Developed countries like Switzerland and even Japan still have some form of restrictions on imports of agricultural produce because they want to boost production and help their farmers, why can't Nigeria do same?

Any serious rice importer should import through our ports, pay normal tariffs and duties and sell. I personally would wish that foreign rice to go as high as 50k, if you can't afford it then go for local, if you don't like it, other sources of carbohydrate are available and if you are not satisfied, DRINK WATER.

IPOB went about lying that the conman and his parents were held by Nigerian soldiers not until the scammer resurfaced in Jerusalem, till date IPOB has not explained to anyone how that coward left Nigeria neither had they apologized to relatives of those killed, maimed, imprisoned or their whereabout unknown all because they were protesting for his "release".

capitalzero:
Thank you ma. Porous borders can be closed if for security reason. But rice should be allowed to be imported the country through designated borders and importers and distributors should be licenced. However, import tarrif should be high enough to discourage importation and encourage local production. I stand with liberal economy not protectionism
Rice can still be imported today through our ports, nobody stops any importer, the problem we have now is that the importers illegally channel them through Benin and Togo and it is then smuggled into Nigeria
The government loses in collection of tariffs, farmers are not encouraged to produce more because of the depressed price and less people are employed in rice farming while creating jobs for Asians and extra billions in revenue for Benin and Togo

It seems Nigerians don't know what they want.

They want development without suffering any consequences.

It's only in Nigeria that someone would want to eat his cake and have it.

So many countries keep dumping cheap substandard products on our country.

Benin with a population of 16 million is now the second largest importer of rice in the world.

Who are those eating the rice in Benin?

Benin republic deliberately sponsor criminals and smugglers to undermine our country for the purpose of sustaining its own economy.
And about 80% of that rice is destined for the Nigerian market, that is after importers pay duties to the Benin republic government and some people are still angry because of this good move by the FG

Can't apply for a Nigerian Citizenship?
And you know Nigeria is Signatory to Ecowas
Which would be same with Biafra

Like I said it's going to be fun
It takes only one country to veto the admission of a new country into ECOWAS, since Biafra would be a newly formed country and would want admission into ECOWAS, Nigeria may veto it and there's nothing anyone can do about it.
If the Nigerian government decides not to give you citizenship and strip Biafrans with Nigerian citizenship born and living in Nigeria, what would the EU, US, UN do about it?
You can be stripped and denied citizenship and nothing would happen

IPOB should just push for autonomy just like Scotland in UK
Nigeria still has the alien land act and I hope you know that, it has been there for decades, no individual foreigner can acquire land or properties in Nigeria, Nigerians can go to Europe, US, Dubai etc and buy properties but nationals of those countries can't do same in Nigeria today.
Hope you are ready to forfeit Igbo properties scattered all over Nigeria when the time comes

Bro, without being disrespectful (because I don't know your age) you sound like someone with a depressed soul.
What do you guys always refer to as "your host"? I do come across this term every time on this forum. There is nothing like "host" and "visitors" in human migration, it is only in this part of the world that you hear that stupid statement.
One is absolutely free to reside anywhere you choose to anywhwere in the world, provided you do so legitimately and if you stay put, your children or grand children will one day become the so called "host". All you need to do is to abide by the laws that guide where you reside, any Bleep up you will be subjected to the consequences.
The Indians were once "host" to the English/Irish men that migrated to the America in the time past, today all of them are called Americans. The Down Under was besieged by the British men/women, today every one there are all Australians including the "host".

You lots are just deliberately myopic, an Igbo man might choose to stay in Lagos after the creation of Biafra and seek for Nigerian citizenship, then become Biafran/Nigerian, and people like you are inconsequential to decide whether that is feasible or not.
Look for something better to engage your time in, you are running after a stallion that is already in motion.
That's a Nigerian bylaw and can only be decided by Nigeria, the Nigerian government can give a Biafra-must-go directive and there's nothing anyone can do about it, not even the EU, US or UN.
You want a Biafra but still feel you still have the right to enjoy your rights as Nigerians today when you eventually get your Biafra?

In your haste to comment you ever forgot that Nigeria of today doesn't respect dual citizenship except in some instances, you want to be Biafran and remain in Nigeria and then enjoy your rights as a Nigerian citizen? Can't go that way.

Meanwhile I hope you know that all Biafrans in Nigeria would have to go get their papers and passports duly stamped in the Nigerian embassy in Biafra before they may be allowed into Nigeria

Ok what of Kanu's questionable sanity and fondness for outlandish propaganda and hate speech with many of his outrageous talk recorded on camera for posterity? You think any serious Western politician will associate with someone who claims the President of Nigeria is dead and has been replaced with a stooge from Sudan? Before this, Kanu branded Buhari a Paedophile who married Aisha at age nine when she was actually Nineteen? The kill a Yoruba before a Snake hate talk and many like it? His charge that Igbos should boycott Yoruba Churches and businesses? Kanu soliciting for guns on video? His many vile and incendiary speech on Radio Biafra over the past couple of years? One thing you really need to get to know quickly about Western politicians is that they will not knowingly side with a bigot, hate preacher or propagandist.

The few who even talk to him are likely those unaware of Kanu's history because any serious Western politician in possession of Kanu's dossier will have nothing at all to do with him let alone enmesh themselves in his Biafra wahala.
They thought we and the "international community" they love taunting about doesn't know about all the hate speeches and they have records of all

Bro, I remember a time years ago Igbos would constantly brag, during the Presidency of GEJ when they felt they owned Nigeria, that Lagos will crash if they pull out, Kaduna will collapse , FCT will kpafuka, Kano will sink blah, blah, blah. They were largely ignored then. Today Nigerians are fed up with the noise and ingratitude of Igbo and just call their bluff and tell them to leave.

All I know is that Igbos should begin humbling themselves as those boys in the North don't mess around . When the riots against Igbos start up North, and our loud and annoyingly rude Igbo brothers are reaping what they sow, they should not come to the SW and just head straight to their SE jeje.

Nnamdi Kanu never said anything about addressing the European parliament. What he said in his tweet was:

"I’m glad to accept the invitation of a few MEPs to address the burning issue of IPOB agitation and what a NEW BIAFRA means for Africa. I look forward to leading IPOB in Europe to the historic encounter.
Venue: EU Parliament Building, Brussels"

He went to the EU parliament and had discussions with some MEP's.

The symbolism of Nnamdi Kanu going to the EU headquarters to talk to or address some EU parliamentarians is that his agitation is getting international recognition.

That's a lot for man Nigeria declared a terrorist
Go declare Biafra already and stop boring Nigerians including Igbos with your cries everyday, everyone is getting disgusted with this your IPOB Biafra wahala

Oga calm down a
bit.
Even if Igbos are to achieve Biafra, is it every Igbo man/woman that will reside in Biafra? Have you ever heard of the word "diaspora"? There are countless Indians and Chinese in Lagos raking in millions on daily basis, Does it mean that they are stateless? If you are lurking around Igbos and their businesses hoping they will all run to the East never to return, you are hallucinating. You keep on writing epistle about self determination of people that doesn't know of your existence.

Igbos are not lacking anything in Nigeria. If what you mean by Igbo's suffering in Nigeria is political patronage, then we care less, all we need is a good and functioning nation, but Nigeria refused to be one.

So any Igbo man aspiring to have a separate nation is exercising his God given right of human liberty, you cannot choose to be stagnant in life and block those that chooses to better theirs.
Have you ever heard the term " Ghana must go" and do you think the Nigerian government will not re-enact it again to be a "Biafra must go"?
