Customs gets aircraft
By dailytimes.com.ng - Sep 1, 2012The Federal Government has purchased an aeroplane for the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) at a cost of N1.73 billion.
The purchase is part of a bid to boost the capacity of the agency in regards to curbing smuggling on the country’s border.
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Minister of Finance, who commissioned the new aircraft on Friday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, said it would help the Customs Service to strengthen aerial surveillance of the various terrains along the country’s borders.
Okonjo-Iweala congratulated the Comptroller General of Customs, Abdullahi Dikko, on the acquisition of the aircraft and urged the agency to work harder in order achieve better results for the country.
“The aircraft is an investment for which the country expects good returns,” she said.
“The terrain around the country’s borders includes difficult-to-access riverine and mountainous areas, which make monitoring and combating of the activities of the borders challenging. Several customs personnel have lost their lives or sustained injuries during attacks by smugglers in recent times.”
The two engine 12-seater aircraft with registration number 5N-DIA,which can fly up to 45,000 ft in altitude, will be captained by Kuhi Mbaya.
Captain Mbaya disclosed that the plane is fitted with the state-of-the-art equipment and could fly long distances, revealing that he flew the plane from Kansas City, in the United States and refuelled in Spain, before arriving Abuja.
Dikko said the aircraft would be used for the benefit of the customs in enhancing its revenue collection and surveillance around the borders. The ceremony was honoured by the deputy controllers general, air force chiefs and members of paramilitary organizations. http://newsghana.com.gh/customs-gets-aircraft/. 5N-DIAThe tail number on the plane is the same in the above article... . |

VivaVivre: oh really!!! That is untrue. He is free to travel aboard the presidential air fleet, as long as he is a part of the presidents entourage or a visiting head of government. He doesn't seem to fall in any of these categories, therefore, stop defending defaulters. For all we know, he might even be going about his own business and they call it "official duty". Who una dey deceive? You are wrong, he doesn't have to be part of any entourage to be on any presidential plane, he serves at the pleasure of his boss aka the president and the president can send any presidential jet to fly him to and from anywhere if the presidents needs his service or needs him to be anywhere around the globe to represent him or Nigeria in general. This particular jet belongs to the Nigerian customs and it was bought in 2012 and commissioned by Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. |

VivaVivre: what business has he flying aboard the Presidential air fleet? Is he the president or a staff of the presidency? This is abuse of privilege!!! Here in Europe, our heads of govt either use the designated official vehicles allocated them (which in most cases are modest cars), or the board public transport. The best that could be done is hire a whole coach for them. If they lived the flamboyant lives that their African counterparts live, they would be voted out of office. Why are Nigerian politicians worse than magicians? He can fly any presidential jet as long as the visit is official. Abuse of privilege is jetting around in government jets privately. Btw, he's not a politician. |

SirShymexx:
I actually like Eko Atlantic a lot and I believe it's one of the reasons why I like Fashola a bit, ditto the metrorail - albeit I'm not his groupie and I still believe he was mediocre.
However, my only grouse with a project of that magnitude is the fact that they never tried to create an identity for the state. Lagos has no identity and when you're planning something as commendable as this within an axis - you've to plan ahead and make it statement, with an identity, so as not to suck developments away from other areas in the South West.
What am I saying? I'll New York and the Tri-state as an example. When Manhattan was built - the identity of New York became the financial district. After that, a lot of things moved to the two other states in the tri-state. However, with Lagos - those folks lack foresight and planning. And they just keep trying to fit everything into one state, while sucking developments out of the other states - thus making Lagos more snarled-up than it's meant to be. What's Lagos got to do with NY? Is their even any ground or basis for such comparisons? Where is the sense and wisdom in comparing a young and little state in Nigeria with NY, a state in the most developed country in the world, a state with hundreds of years worth of development and home to some of the richest people in the world, a state with hundreds of billions of dollars yearly operating budget.? Lagos is in no way half developed so exactly what's so developed and over concentrated about about Lagos apart from the oversized population which is naturally thinning into neighboring states anyway. Demand and supply, prices, trends and market forces emanates changes naturally when due and necessary same way human population, industries, plants and factories are naturally overflowing into Ogun and Oyo states. Same manner of developments going on in Lagos state are transpiring in Ogun and Oyo states... |

ezeagu: I guess you missed the part where it was said the Onitsha Main Market was built for £530,000 pounds in 1955. That's the equivalent of 10 million pounds today according to inflation calculators. That's one expensive "yam market".
You're talking about pre-colonial now, do we want to go there? Isn't it more impressive that Igbo people who supposedly never had markets or towns now have some of the biggest markets and industries in tropical Africa?
Yes, oil was produced in other areas of the south, but, I don't know who was taking oil from Lagos then because Bonny and Calabar together accounted for at least 60% of Britain palm oil imports in the 19th century with a total value of over £350,000 in 1850, 50 years before Lagos £100,000 and that's without considering inflation which makes Calabar and Bonny's palm economy in the 1850s roughly four times the size. And that's just palm oil. In your village dreams, no such thing was documented as part of the history of Nigeria. |

ezeagu: Look, I don't care about a radio station that doesn't exist today. I want to discuss innovations, not second hand equipment dashed to the Lagos office in the 50s. Eastern Nigeria was going through some industrialisation during the 1880s to 1900 which is why Calabar was the first capital. The palm industry is what started Nigeria and the trade was made by several ethnic groups in eastern Nigeria. The first anti-colonial movement, the Ekumeku movement, was initiated by Anioma-Igbo people. The biggest market of colonial Africa, Onitsha Main Market, still thrives today and now shares that title with Kumasi. I can't be bothered talking about industries that are completely dead today. Igbos Lying And Its Negative Consequences For Them. They tell outrageous lies to make them seem very important persons even as you evaluate them and see that they are not what they claim to be.
Igbos claim to be special. A wag quips: they are so special that they did not invent writing, the wheel or make any contribution to science and technology. When the world of science and technology is talked about they go missing! They did not even have the ability to develop an Igbo wide political state but instead lived in stateless villages!

Also Lagos was the administrative capital from 1906. Get over yourself and quit confusing yourself I asked you why the SE didn't score any Firsts In Nigeria within the same regional era, not irrelevant stories and excuses. 2. None of the stuff anybody built is empowering anything. Crude oil is the only relevant industry in Nigeria and everybody knows that. The industrial estates created by the old western region created more jobs than the Nigerian oil industry many time over so what's your point? [s] 3. The South east folk, as I said, were busy running the biggest markets in Africa and being put in administrative positions throughout Nigeria. ezeagu: Eastern Nigeria had the biggest markets in Africa and eastern Nigerians were in top positions across Nigeria.
It was because of the palm oil trade that this country started in the first place. Eastern Nigerian oil was the prized commodity. Much development across eastern Nigeria. We can go before British Nigeria if you want, because bragging over achievements in slavery is pointless, apart from say independence movements, which was sparked by events such as the Iva Valley shooting of 1949 and which came from the examples led by the Ekukumku of Anioma-Igbo and the Women's war. 1. I asked you why the SE didn't score any Firsts In Nigeria within the same regional era, not irrelevant stories and excuses. 2. The industrial estates created by Awolowo are still powering the Nigerian economy so are any of the irrelevant stuff you just listed still in existence or relevant? No. 3. I made a claim that the old western region achieved a lot and many firsts in Nigeria and Africa, but you dance around with all kinds of rubbish about british supervision, british framework. So, for argument sake, while the SW was benefiting immensely from your so called british framework and supervision, what happened to the folks in SE? Other regions were busy having the largest markets in Africa, being the best at agriculture, or simply filing the upper ranks of the military and civil service.
There is no excuse why another Cocoa house wasn't built, apart from the missing presence of the British. I'm not saying you can't do it on your own, I'm saying that that was the situation Just up there you agreed with my claim and even said that's no excuse, but here you still managed to come up with boat load of excuses and more irrelevant garbage. DId the western region led by Awolowo built the very firsts in Nigeria and africa without oil money. Yes Or No. Be a man and just answer yes or not. |
