The Chief Press Secretary to Government, Ima Niboro should be the spokesman of Government.

In the past and historically we have confused the role of Information Minister and Government spokesman.

I hope this current Government has come to this realization.

It is not confusion, rather added responsibility for the Minister of Information. While the Chief Press Secretary speaks for the office of the President and he do not sit in the FEC, the information minister has an added responsibility for speaking for the government and sit in the council of ministers. Every country have its own way that it deem fit to govern and dessiminate information. The only problem is, if the information is not dessiminated.

That lecturer is a fool. How much is he earning that he have to pay the government for plying on the roads?

Isn't the government collecting RoadTax through vehicle licence? Didn't the government increased the fuel price after they abolished the tollGates?

This government have not shown itself to be responsible enough to manage the resources from the oil revenue, why should we give them the little we earn?

This trend from developing countries that once you are Anti-America or the west, then automatically you are friends. Other than being anti-America what do Zimbabwe and Iran have in common? Both countries have different national aspirations and interest.

Country's should friends and alliances based on common values and national apirations not the personality of a leader.

Both Mugabe and Ahmadinejad knows they are jokers. Mr Mugabe is nearying his tipping point, once he kapput, Zimbabwe will have nothing to do with Iran. And probably once Iran find a way of doing away with Mr ~Nejad, they will have nothing to do with Zimbabwe
Politics / Re: Abuja Should Have A Mayor And Not A Minister by Arkison: 12:58pm On Apr 27, 2010
KnowAll:

[size=14pt]The reason why the office of the Mayor of London was established was because London b4 the advent of this office was a directionless, purposeless, and often a city engaged in one boundary clash or the other amongst other things

Since the Mayor came on board, with his introduction of the oyster card system, by the vision and forthright brought by this purposeful executive officer the transportation sector has being revolutionalized into a world class transportation hub worthy of replicating.

Kenneth Livingstone the last Mayor has comprehensively integrated the transportation system into one big unison of what one can be ascribed as a transportation paradise thanks to having a strong executive power at the heart of the affairs of the city.

There are 800,000 people living in Abuja although they get to vote for
their councillors and chairmen into the various LG that is not good enough as the LG budgets is noting to write home about.

What Abujans lacks and needs is a focal point officer with real executive powers someone who would speak for both the poor and the rich for the benefit of the City.

The present system of appointing political jobbers is not the way forward, it has serve its time which was when we were ushering in democracy, those who drew the constitution overlooked certain things which should now be revisited and corrected.

We have all seen and all witness to the hollowness and shabbiness
of our constitution especially during the Yaradua debacle, it is time we correct these anomaly and enfranchise the 800,000 people living in Abuja with a proper executive officer who would hold sway in the FCT.

Just because London chose to go the Mayoral road a bit late does not
make it right for us to continue to dwell and wallow in our silly and undemocratic ways, London has since seen the advantages of having a powerful executive officer at the helms of its affair, the Olympic games amongst other things is coming to London in 2012.

. We cannot continue to have a Minister of the FCT who at the whim of the Presidency can be sacked without recourse to the 800,000 citizens of Abuja. I can remember the Mayor of Washington caught snorting cocaine in a hotel with a love-peddler, he was incarcerated for the offence, the following year he ran again for the Mayorship of the city and won, let the 800,000 people living in Abuja have a voice that is what democracy is all about.[/size]

In whatever sense, your arguement boils down to lack of good governance. Other than Lagos state that have recently introduced the Bus services which of the 36 states that have state governors have a proper transport scheme, road, housing scheme, hospitals and anything to name a few. Most of what you are saying can all be done by the Minister. After all, the power to execute project, disburse funds and plan and implement a budget are also vested in the office of the minister. Hence, the term executive power is just a nomencleture to confuse people. As far as we know good leadership is all we want.

Moreover, the peculiar nature of Nigerian political system necissitate for a Minister. Once they introduce an Elected officer, unless a new Law is created to include the non-indegine, the political system will be hijacked by tribal sentiments. Where only a native of Abuja can be allowed to contest any political office.

A compitent minister can perform all the functions you have underlined. An elected mayor may not do anything. Do not confuse bureacracy with good governance.

Abuja is a city purposely built to provide a base for the federal government. Most of the natives were resettle in Niger and Nassarawa state. The only problem is the Federal Government that changes Ministers every 1 or 2 years. And this did not affect Abuja alone, it affect all sectors, from petroleum industry to sport
Politics / Re: Abuja Should Have A Mayor And Not A Minister by Arkison: 10:52am On Apr 27, 2010
I would have prefered you back your arguement with historical facts and inadequacy of the current system rather than just giving examples from other cities. Every society have its own heritage and it is not copying America or UK that will make Abuja or Nigeria great, rather implementing the right policies. It is worthy to note that the Boris Johnson is the second mayor Londo. London never had a mayor until recently.

Abuja was previously thought to be only an enclave of the Federal Government serving as a unity centre of other federating structure and therefore all its activities will be legislated and over seen by the national assembly.

The current system is not illegal. It is backed by Nigerian law. If you have problem with the system just say so, but I think it is higly propestorous to pronounce it as illegal.
Politics / Re: Experts Back Nsa Over Attacks On Cbn’s Reforms by Arkison: 2:50pm On Apr 26, 2010
cantell:

NOT a few Nigerians have reacted to comments by the National Security Adviser, Lieutenant-General Aliyu Gusau (rtd), that the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN’s, reforms were damaging the economy. National Chairman, Independent Shareholders Association of Nigeria, ISAN, Mr. Adebayo Adeleke told Vanguard: “The statement credited to Aliyu Gusau, National Security Adviser to the government, that CBN ’s reforms have damaged the economy has clearly vindicated ISAN and some other shareholders of the troubled banks. “When the reforms were instituted and the actions taken against the banks’ chiefs were executed, we cried out that the actions were not in the best interest of the economy. For NSA to make such statement, it shows that the Presidency is not happy and comfortable with some of the reforms and actions of the CBN Governor, Malam Lamido Sanusi. In fact, those who supported the reforms initially were looking at the effect from a myopic perspective. CBN reforms have a multiplier-effect and that is what we are seeing. Every sector is suffering from the effect; industry and commerce, agriculture, energy, aviation, private and public sectors. “It is time for the Presidency to intervene and call CBN to order. The reforms will cause more damage if urgent steps are not taken. When banks refuse to lend, how can the economy as a whole move forward? What is the primary responsibility of banks in any country? As our banks have refused lending, the economy will soon be crippled. If it were in advanced economies, the CBN governor would have resigned if the public and even the government came out to declare a vote of no confidence in him. It is a shame that the man is still there, he should resign.”
www.vanguardngr.com/2010/04/26/experts-back-nsa-over-attacks-on-cbns-reforms/

While I do agree with you on the multiplier effect in some cases, but candidly, it is good to look at all these from an average Nigerian perspective rather than political perspective.

The agricutlural activities in Nigeria is largely subsistence have a litle or nor dependence on the Banking loans. The share of agricultural loans in any bank loas portfolio is completely negligible and a careful scrutiny on the banks list of debtors willl show that there is no single farmer that is included in that list. Moreover, the banks have been rather being profitting from disbursing WorldBanks/UN (FADAMA I,II & III) and the Federal Government Agricultural subsidies by charging those poor farmers ridiculuous fees and COT for banking with them.

The Nigerian energy sector can be categorised into 2: The petroleum and the Electricity sectors. The Nigerian energy sector have never been supported by any Nigerian bank other than giving bridge loans for importing refined petroleum products into the country. And these are the same people that refused to honour their debts obligations. The electricity sector is in commatose and Nigerian banks have never supported any investment in electrical power generation without government backing.

However we all know that the Public sector (aka Ministers and Governors) are the one borrow money from banks more and used it for ridiculous projects that never come to an end. The banks help these government agents to siphon the states, local government money.

I don't know how this action affect the aviation sector. But I do know that Nigeria had face serious place crashes few years back. Probably now the banks are not giving them loans to buy cheap, over-used airplane to continue killing Nigerians. More lives are now saved.

It is worthy to remember that banks are out to make profit. Lending and investment is the principal way banks make profits.
Politics / Re: Experts Back Nsa Over Attacks On Cbn’s Reforms by Arkison: 2:16pm On Apr 26, 2010
I think people have to be very cautious in praising any Nigerian.

It is a known fact that, people that control the banks, control the economy and anybody that control the economy control the political systems. Most of the elites, Gusau etc, secretly controls these banks because they got large stake in these banks. Not only that, these banks have been acting as vehicles of ferrying looted money to foreign countries. Nigerian banking system have never experience these kind of changes before. And with the changes, the political influence of those behind the banks is put in jeopardy.

Those criticizing the CBN action are not doing it for the benefit of an average Nigerian. They are criticizing the CBN because of the change in statos qua.

With the CBN action, we are now able to know that people that have been funding PDD are nothing far from fraudsters. Dangote, Otedola, Arisokola Aloa, Rahamaniya Oil and a bunch of PDP fund raisers are indebted to the banks and have no intention of paying.

There is something fishy about Gusau's comments.

I don't think we are moving off topic.

Your question was : is the Law necessary or Bad? Do you just want me to give you a mechanical answer of yes or no?
Immigration is a complex issue and cannot be literary discussed within prism of a a national/state interest or national or state law. It is an international issue and should be looked at from international perspective.

I read somewhere that the rate of illegal immigrants from Mexico into US increases rapidly with Mexico joining a free trade agreement with America there by giving the Americans unfair advantage over mexican farmers and oil indusry.

Illegal immigration is as a result of exploitative nature of developed countries on developing ones. And any balance discussion of Immigration will have to discuss, especially from the perspective of Nigerians and Africans.

Are you serious? Allow me to play along.

Humans have rules and as such have to abide by them. I suppose using your logic of nature, it is okay for a Cub lion to have intimacy with its mother, I am wondering if it is okay for you to have with your mother? After all, it is nature and your logic?

Irrelevant to the discussion at hand. Price of tea in Ekiti and the strike of doctors in Ikeja bears no relation at all.

Another irrelevant post.

I think you should read what the thread is about again. Here is a clue - Illegal immigrants. smiley

I read the thread and I understood it is about illegal immigration. The problem with me is that, I do not believe there is anything like Illegal Immigration. All migration are legal. It just that may be Iam not good at presenting my points, but all are relevant and logical

I don't know whether you have noticed that the issue of illegal immigrants in most cases is comes from countries with better condition of living and are developed countries? And the standard of living of a country is usually dictated by their resources consumption hence the example of oil and food production.

Humans have no rules. Humans create rules to satisfy their interest. And these rules are dynamic and can be change to satisfy the influentials in the society. The idea that the well to do countries have created a systems that allow selective people into their country alone is not only inhuman, violates the law of nature, but exploitative.

Whether they like it or not, if there is continuous movement of resources there will be continous movement of people. Illegal migration is a socio-economic problem not legal problem
Foreign Affairs / Re: Arizona Immigration Law. Necessary Or Bad Law? by Arkison: 10:07am On Apr 26, 2010
Migration, Immigration and emigration - whatever jargons they want to describe it with is a natural phenomenan among all living species. Animals, birds and humans have being migrating over centuries and will continue to migrate. To reduce migration, state control and racial profiling will not limit that. Rather, goverments of all countries have to look at it from human and natural perspective. Why do animals (human, birds, fish, zebras) migrate? People migrate in search of food and better condition of living and therefore migration will continue wether all of America introduce the law ane even if it force people to start wearing lapels on their pockets to identify a citizen and a non citizen. If the millions people thought to be illegal immigrants revolts will the gov't deport or kill all of them?

It is more reasonable to ask why should America consume 80% of the world oil and they are just less than 0.1 percent of the world oil? Of course people have to follow the oil to where it is consume since America are ready invade a country in order to consume more oil in their country.

Or why should kenyans be suffering from food shortage while 80% of their food production is shipped to Europe for consumption? Of course Kenyans will have to follow their food to Europe for consumption.

If there is continues movement of goods and natural resources then there should be continous movement of people.

FG borrows $1bn from World Bank

Written by Turaki A. Hassan & Mohammed S. Shehu

[President Barack Obama]

President Barack Obama
The Federal Government has borrowed US $915 million from the World Bank to finance an expected deficit in the 2010 budget, it emerged yesterday.

Acting President Goodluck Jonathan sent a letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives seeking approval to borrow the money.

Jonathan said the money was needed because Nigeria was in dire need of funds to finance an infrastructure deficit, which he said is critical to rapid development. He also said the credit is highly concessionary, offered by multilateral agencies to which Nigeria belongs and commits substantial resources as affiliation fees.

Jonathan said in the letter, “The World Bank portfolio of the facilities totalling $915 million out of which $179 million would be drawn in fiscal 2010 is of particular essence as it would be deployed to Urban Water and Transport, Human Capacity Development and Power infrastructure projects across the country.” He said the borrowing plan was in consonance with due process and appealed to the House of Representatives to approve it. The total budget deficit in the 2010 budget stands at N1.3 trillion naira, while the whole budget is N4.06 trillion naira.

Meanwhile, the Acting President is expected to sign the 2010 budget at 10am today at the Presidential Villa. This followed a meeting between him and the leadership of the National Assembly on Tuesday, during which the lawmakers agreed to remove projects that were inserted in the budget without the knowledge of the executive.

Jonathan was reportedly not happy with the padding of the budget by the appropriation committees of the two chambers, saying they might have taken advantage of President Umaru Yar’adua’s illness.

Passage of the budget, which was approved by the National Assembly and forwarded to Jonathan last month, has been delayed for weeks due to differences between the Presidency and the lawmakers.

Minister of State for Information and Communications Labaran Maku, while briefing reporters shortly after the Federal Executive Council meeting yesterday, said the budget would be signed before the week runs out. He said Jonathan was unable to assent to the budget because of certain discrepancies which he said have to be sorted out.

But later yesterday, Jonathan’s spokesman Ima Niboro came up with a terse statement saying the budget would be signed today by 10 am. “Budget to be signed tomorrow by 10 am”, Niboro said in the statement.

“The Acting President told us that the National Assembly has forwarded the approved budget which the executive arm is looking at, so from what the Acting President told council, the leadership of the National Assembly and the presidency are discussing on the areas of discrepancies and we expect that between now and some few days, the budget will be signed into law because we do not have a lot of time to wait. Already we are in the month of April, the nation is expecting a lot of activities to regenerate the economy and give life to socio-economic activities in the country,” Maku said.

The budget aims to increase expenditure by 50 percent this year as Nigeria tries to spend its way out of a downturn, but the increase risks pushing the country to a budget deficit of more than 5 percent.

On the golden jubilee anniversary, Maku said the council had received the report of the presidential committee chaired by the Secretary to Government of Federation Mahmud Yayale Ahmed.

He said the council called on Nigerians to be mobilized to celebrate the golden jubilee of the nation. “The state governments are expected to draw up their own programs as well. The logo would also be unveiled very soon,” Maku said.

On the recent trip of the acting President to United States, foreign affairs Minister Odein Ajumogobia said the trip had tangible benefits to Nigeria. “The tangible benefit of the Acting President’s trip to US is something we have to work on In terms of follow up, in terms of trying to engage our partners to address our domestic issues of power, infrastructure and so on and that is what this trip did,” he said.

Human capacity Development means money for trip to London and New York for holday and shopping spree in a disguis to attend some useless lectures given by a drunk Englishman.

The crisis has religious dimension. General Domkat Bali who himself is on the ground in Jos has said so.

Aisha who is on this forum and who herself has lost family members in this crisis has also said that the problem is a mixture of land, politics, culture and yes Religious domination.

So stop pretending that it has no religious dimension, that pastor who got castrated last week what political party does he belong to? What political party does his wife belong to?

Please let us stop living in denial and resolve this problem honestly. I am not proud of the killers whether they are Christains or Muslims but yes this crisis has religious dimension too.

I didn't say that there is no religious dimension in the crises, but the root of the crises is not about religion. The muslims in Jos are not killing the Christains to convert them forcefully. Rather political, economic and land disbutes degenerates to fight and unfortunately, the principal actors have predominant religion affiliation that is why it metamorphous into religious crises.

You have mixed up your story. The Pastor who was castrated, it was reported he was castrated in Kano some 20 years ago. Then another Pastor and his wife were killed in Boto in Bauchi State. In both cases, it is regretable that the criminals will go free. It is just unfortunate.

What I do know is that crises like this cannot be solved by continuous killing and they cannot they be solved by religious leaders.  The government always resorth to cheap way of handling crises either: by killing people (militants, terrorist)  or by outsourcing it to traditional or religious leaders. Nigerian leaders and elites, including Domkat Bali, and the general public have this way of simplifying things. And the Jos crises cannot be simplified to religious crises. There have never been any attempt of reconciliation and so the crises will continue.

Two corpses were recovered by the police command yesterday in Riyom local government area of Plateau State.
Plateau State Public Relations Officer ASP Muhammed Lerama who confirmed the incident said information reaching them revealed that four people went to farm yesterday morning and did not return home which prompted a search team to go looking for them. Though the PPRO said they were yet to have full details of what happened as at the time of filing this story he however said that preliminary report showed that two corpses were discovered while the remaining two were still missing.

Lerama told our reporters that further details of the incident will be made available today.

A resident of the area Mr Pam Daniel said four people were killed by some assailants suspected to be Fulani when they went to farm Monday morning.

Pam said residents became suspicious when the four people did not return from the farm towards the evening which made them to launch a search operation in the company of security men. He said it was late in the evening that the corpses of two people out of the four were discovered; the remaining two were still missing.

Meanwhile, youths in their dozens allegedly blocked Jos-Abuja road in the area harassing motorists passing through to show their grievances over the incident before they were dispersed by the Special Task Force.

Some of your points made sense. I lived in those communities for a sometime and what I understood is that, the people that are always called to address the issues whenever there is religious crises in Jos have no stake in Jos other than their religious interest. Not only that, they have little knowledge of the grievances of each of the warring communities and they always look at them from just religious perspective or from Settler/Indegine perspective.

Take it as a fact, there is no Nigerian, old or small, literate or illeterate that do not have religious sentiments attached to his judgement. The Jos crises have little to do with religious supremacy, rather it is about economy and land dispute and to a larger extends, political aspirations.

The Fulani in Jos have little interest in who is the Governor or who builit which house or what, rather their interest lies in the right of passage and grazing lands. The Hausa and Berom have interest in the economy and the politics. Hence the leadership of both the Berom and Hausa are responsible for the current crises. It is not about being Christain and being Muslim, it is about the Hausa, who are happened to be Muslims and against the Berom, who happened to be Christains.

It's no news that Nigeria is an armorphous of different ethnic nationalities lump together in one country. Yet we could be one if we agreed to recognize this and 'arrange' own political system to accommodate our diversity.
Unfortunately we are trying to copy America which is completely different from Nigeria in composition viz:
1. Indigenous americans are the red Indians who are in the minority now and like other identifiable ethnic minorities do not concentrate in a particular geographical location unlike in Nigeria where Yorubas, Ibos, Ijaws, Hausas and other ethnic groups have identifiable geographical areas.
2. USA was formed by each states joining the federation at different times while Nigerian ethnic nationalities were 'forcefully/ deceptively' merged together by slave traders called colonial masters.
3. Most 'indegenous' Americans are whites from Europe who 'ran' to that geographical areas as a result of a common problem- religious persecution unlike Nigeria, the common issue that brought the ethnic nationalities together is the convenience of administration by the colonial masters.

UK which is 4 countries within a country is one country that shared similar armorphosity with Nigeria. We have England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, each with own languages. Each of them have some powers to govern themselves and even compete in international sporting events like olympic, football as individual counrties.

Therefore copying the USA Federalism cannot be suitable or bring peace to Nigeria.
If we do not want to split into pieces, we need to pattern our arrangement like UK where we could have several nations within a country that will be called United Nigerian republics insted of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
There is nothing wrong calling the various republics/nations as Yoruba, Ibo, Hausa, Ijaw, Itsekiri, Ibibio, etc like Scotland for scottish, Wales for Welsh, Ireland for Irish, England for English.
It is share hypocrisy and avenue to prevent our greatness by enemies within and without (including the colonial Master) by insisting we should remain as we are. It will never work.
God is no fool by scattering the languages and making sure those who speak the same language live together and rule themselves without feeling exploited or dominated by people of other languages.
Nigeria should therefore be RESTRUCTURED along language/ethnic line. This will make each nation to explore maximise their potentials for the good of their people and the United republics as a whole.
If you believe this then spread it!!

In as much as we have problems with the current structure of the country, I think we shouldn't go as far as blaming the colonial masters for the current contraption we found ourselves. At indepedence, the British left Nigeria as a loose federation of 3 Nations. The Western, Eastern and Northern Nigerian regions. Each of these regions are allowed to administer their region the way they like. The northern Nigeria, remain a semi-feudal systems with the Chiefs and Emirs retaining a large chunk of authority in the form of Native Authority. Each community in the north where administered based on their Cultural heritage through their Chief and the District officer.

However, our forefathers, from Ironsi down, prefers the Unitary systems of government (may be because of their military heritage). Then after the civil war, the leaders at the time thought accelarating homegenisation by decentralising regional powers will reduce the prospect of another civil war. Fracturing the country into tiny peaces of 36 different states have succeeded in supressing potential dissent to central rule but have agravated the poverty and dependence on the central government for sustainance

General Gusau, during his time as Security Adviser to Obj have not proved himself capable of containing the security situations in this country. His failure is glaring from Gusau, his hometown and the capital of Zamfara State, which is the epicentre of the religious earthquake that rocked Nigeria during Objs regime. As a security adviser, he failed in his assessment of the effect of Political-Sharia on the security, peace and unity of the country. His credentials as a Security Experts are merely exageraed.

Nevertheless, Gusau comments on Sanusi's method should stand on their own. Unless, Gusau, who have been in and out of government have some personal interest in the Nigerian banking system. After all that is what the elites do. They are involve neck deep in all shaddy deals in the banks.

Calling you blind and ignorant might at the moment be premature but not unwarranted. How long has jonathan and his cabinet been in office and when the did the depletion occur if i might ask Einstein ?

You don't have to pre-empt an insult. We don't need Rocket science to understand Nigerian fraud system.

What is with the sharing of the excess crude account before governors endorsed Mr Joe?

What if Mr Joe is planting the story in the news, telling us in advance that our accounts will be empty, so we do not expect anything at the end of the year.

Cremation will interfere with natural circulation of mineral matter and also aid in polluting the environment by realsing harmful gases and dioxins into the atmosphere. E

The dead body should be allowed to decompose and recircled the minerals recycled. The dead of a man is no better than the dead body of dog.

Is this Gusau guy for real? If he has valid criticisms of CBN operations shouldn't he address it to Sanusi through official channels instead of talking carelessly at a public forum.

Nigerians have this culture of expressing political supremacy at every slight opportunity. Mr Gusau is an adviser to the president and should direct his opinions to the President.

I hope Mr Joe is not dipping his hands in the Till, while roaming around the world telling people how good he is. Did he consult Mr Abdussalam Abubakar on how to empty the the Till in a year.

Arkison, within Sartorious' submission is a valid point and that is the apparent disconnect between Babalola, Sanusi and other stakeholders. There is no plan beyond the initial gra gra and noise making.

If a bank collapses, only your first N50,000 is protected. This level was set in 1988. Surely this needs reviewing upwards.

Deposit protection in Cyprus is £90,000 and the UK is £50,000

Im not an Economist and I have little interest in Economy of numbers. But what I do care is, when someone is making an arguement, he should be consistent, straightforward and get all his facts right. He is trying to back his assertions with an example from England and then he jumble off his facts. He also went ahead to make interjections in Darlings statements from Telegrah :

"There were many days when I knew that unless the Bank (of England) was making [covert] interventions [such as the secret loans of £61.6 billion to HBOS and the Royal Bank of Scotland], then literally banks would have had to shut their doors and cash machines would have been switched off. People should be in no doubt that the world banking system was on the brink of collapse in October 2008.

The intervensions by the UK Treasury was not covert. It was publicily announce before it was made. So why put words in Mr Darling mouths?

He is free to argue for or against Sanusi's actions, but he should get his fact rights.

over to you Ag Goodluck.

Recently, the former Minister of State for Finance, Remi Babalola, told Sanusi that the Federal Government would like to see the blueprint on the banking reforms. The government’s demand, analysts said, emanated from the seeming confusion Sanusi’s conflicting pronouncements have caused

A typical example of bad reforms is the new directive that bank\'s should not operate ATMs outside their branches, this is one of the dumbest regulation in the banking world. Some un.informed Nigerians thought that would protect them against ATM fraud

ALISTAIR DARLING is the Chancellor of the British Exchequer. He is the British equivalent of Nigeria's Lamido Sanusi, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Confronted with the challenge of stabilizing the British banking sector in the wake of the global financial crisis in the last quarter of 2008, Darling decided that a better approach was to handle the situation quietly, obviously in order not to undermine public confidence in the country's financial system.

A critical examination of his approach has become imperative against the backdrop of the controversies that have trailed the actions taken by the CBN Governor Lamido Sanusi when confronted with a similar challenge here, as was Mr. Darling in Britain.

Asked by The Telegraph what he did in the wake of the crisis to save the British banking system from collapse, the Chancellor of the Exchequer said:

"There were many days when I knew that unless the Bank (of England) was making [covert] interventions [such as the secret loans of £61.6 billion to HBOS and the Royal Bank of Scotland], then literally banks would have had to shut their doors and cash machines would have been switched off. People should be in no doubt that the world banking system was on the brink of collapse in October 2008.

Rubbish. Rubbish at its peak.

Governor Central Bank of Nigeria = Bank of England
Sanusi Lamido Sanusi = Mervyn King
Minister of Finance = Chancellor de Exchequer
Babalola = Darling

Why won't you just get your facts right before starting your ridiculous assertions.
Politics / Re: Acting President Goodluck Jonathan And His Too Many Grammatical Errors by Arkison: 4:48pm On Apr 15, 2010
English is an official Language but not the language of reasoning in Nigeria.

The people who believe that making English language an official language are just naive and have inferiority complex.

Why on earth should we as a society, whose population is more than that of Britain, make English our official language. The fact that these people subjugated for years is enough for us to discard that toga of slavery, some are still wearing it. Even in UK here, they recognise language barrier to the extend they translate many official documents to other languages (most of which are foreign). In UK it is not a crime not to speak English, rather they can even get you an interpreter. However, in our enslaved society, people that do not speak English, common pidgin English are considered inferior and are a subject of mockery.

Nigerians should begin to discard this toga of slavery.
