Britain didn't create the Yoruba tag...... Also, the fact that many Large cosmopolitan Yoruba Urban settlements already existed long before colonization meant that a lot of Yorubas were already aware of most other Yoruba groups..... I am not saying there are no disparities between Yoruba groups, but it isn't nearly as strong as that which exist between Igbos. A colonial documents describes Igbos to live in isolated homesteads scattered accross the land, such that family A sees Family B as "strangers" and town A sees town B as a completely different group of people entirely.

Also, the Ika just like Ekpeye are Igboid languages and not just dialects of Igbo.... There is a difference. Ngwa, Etiti, Mbaise, Etc are dialects of Igbo. While their culture and arguably also the people, are a mix of their own Igboid cultures, and that of the Edoid people around them (More Bini influence around Ika, and more Urhobo influence along the Ukwale axis), just like the Itsekiris are primarily South Eastern Yoruba, but have also mixed in with some Edo and Urhobo...... It is not a surprise that the acceptance of the igbo identity among the Aniomas grows stronger the closer one gets to Onitsha/The river Niger, and wanes further West and South, such that the scenario in places like Kwale and Agbor is completely different from what is obtainable in Asaba or Ibusa..... Not a co-incidence imo.

I can't say that it is unfortunate that they are not situated in the South East, since I am sure they are proud of their current location in Delta state of Nigeria-. But if they were, I am pretty sure their original identities would have been watered down by now into an Igbo one.... It would be the same thing if Itsekiris were located somewhere in Ogun state .... But these people are who they are, and people should just learn to accept it.
pls never compare itshekiri with ika in terms of their respective relationships with yoruba and Igbo.

Itshekiri is an ethnic group. There has never been, is not, and will never be an argument about that.
If there should be any comparism then Itshekiri is more Edo and not yoruba.
In case of ika the problem is purely structural. When an ethnic group is lumped together with other groups as a state, in the course of their interaction, they are forced to build a new identity which is different from their original identity . You drop ur native language and use more of English or pidgin in your own state, you play down on your culture (including language) and begin to emphasize those aspects of your culture which unites you with your partner.

Before the formation of OAU, the North Africa never moved along with the rest of africa. Their identities were still shaped by their pre-colonial interaction with arabs and europe. In fact a moroccan king once stated that morocco 'is an african tree with European branches'
once OAU was formed, common economic and political challenges forced both the north and the rest of africa to embraced OAU as a means of combating the problem, thus reawakening pan africanism in them. They became interested in african politics, sports etc

by the time Anioma state succeeds, Anioma pple will be forced to interact in their original culture and language. This will re awaken the Igbo spirit in them and oblitrate the illusory edo origin.

The bolded is a decision taken by a people . I think its good that their decision is respected.

The word 'igbo' was definitely coined out one day too. Today its respected as a tribe in general. So if the Ika say they are Ika people and not igbo people, I feel its best they are left alone as ika people.

There was a time Urhobo, Isoko, itsekiri, Etsako as different tribes never existed, they were all just clans in the benin kingdom with diFferent ways of speaning. Today they are identified for what they say they are.

Goodmorning bro.
when did the boy sunday oliseh become 'a people'?

He said he is not Igbo and so what?
So what happens if tomorow he says he is Igbo? Does that make him more important?
Cursing a group of pple b'cos of a silly statement of one BOY doesnt make SE Igbos trustworthy.

Many ika folks are proud of their Igbo heritage, many refuse being called Igbo while others are indifferent or just call themselves Ika. If they were in the same region with SE Igbo, am sure it would have gone a long way in resolving such identity crisis. Ezza pple in Ebonyi is one example of a group with outside Igbo influences like ika but they dont have identity crisis.

So long as dsunity in Igboland such as this and the weakening of ethnic groups will result in a more powerful federal govt in Nigeria, we will be seeing things like this. Igbo enemies will even begin to sponsor them.
