Health / 8 Common Eye Care Misconceptions. by Arosam(m): 5:23pm On Jan 04, 2021 |
EIGHT COMMON EYE CARE MISCONCEPTIONS Has anyone ever told you that reading in dim lighting damages your eyesight? Or, that your eyes can get weaker if you wear prescription lenses? These are just two examples of common eye care misconceptions that are still prevalent today. Curious about other myths you may have heard about your eyesight? Read on to learn about eight misconceptions—and why these beliefs aren’t actually true! 1. Reading in dim lighting weakens our eyes. You’ve probably heard at some point in your life that reading in dim lighting can damage your eyesight. However, this isn’t necessarily the case. Just like every other part of your body, your eyes naturally grow weaker as you get older—especially when you hit your 30s. So, if you once were able to read in the dark and now find it difficult, it probably has more to do with age and less to do with damaged eyesight. In any case, reading is always good for your eye health, so don’t let this misconception keep you from your page-turner! 2. Eating carrots can improve eyesight. Carrots are loaded with vitamins that are essential for eye health, including Vitamin A and beta-carotene. While these vitamins help protect your eyes and can support overall eye health, eating carrots will not directly improve your eyesight. Like carrots, dark leafy greens and other fruits and vegetables promote healthy eyesight, but no diet can reverse or correct basic vision problems such as nearsightedness or farsightedness. 3. There’s no way to avoid vision loss with age. Maybe you’ve heard it’s inevitable that you’ll have to wear glasses when you get older. While it’s extremely common for individuals to develop a need for prescription lenses as they age, it is possible to avoid age-related vision loss. You can start protecting your eyesight when you’re younger by taking precautionary steps like: Finding out what eye diseases you’re at a higher risk for Having regular eye exams Exercising frequently Eating a well-balanced diet Watching for changes in your eyesight Protecting your eyes from UV rays 4. Sitting too close to the TV damages vision. When you were little, did your parents ever tell you that sitting too close to the TV would cause you to go blind? While that’s obviously an exaggeration, many do believe that getting too close to the television and other screens can damage your vision. However, this is not backed by any concrete research. Rather, this belief began because the first TVs used to emit radiation—but, this hasn’t been the case for decades! Children have a tendency to sit close to TV screens and hold books up to their face because their young eyes allow them to focus on close objects more easily than adults’ eyes do. This habit usually changes as they get older—however, if you have an older child who still sits close to screens, it may be a sign of myopia (nearsightedness). Therefore, regular eye exams are important, even for young children, to stay on top of their eye health. 5. Your eyes get weaker if you wear prescription lenses. Have you ever heard that you should hold off on wearing prescription lenses because your eyes will become dependent on them, causing eyesight to become worse? Well, you may be relieved to know this is just another common misconception! If you need the assistance of prescription lenses to see more clearly, using those lenses will never make your eyes weaker. As time passes, you may need a stronger prescription, but that has nothing to do with previously wearing glasses or contacts. Instead, it’s the result of your eye condition changing with age and time. Wearing prescription lenses doesn’t make your eyesight weaker; the lenses simply act as an aid to help you see better. 6. You only need to wear sunglasses in the summer or at the beach. There’s a prevalent belief that you only need to wear sunglasses in the summertime. This, however, is a myth that can actually lead to significant eye damage. The sun’s ultraviolet rays are just as powerful in the winter months as they are in the summer, but UV rays actually reflect more frequently off of snow and cloud coverage. Your eyes are just as much at risk of photokeratitis (eye sunburn) in the winter as in the summer, so it’s important to wear UV-blocking sunglasses year round, and not just on the beach. 7. A nightlight can contribute to nearsightedness in children. Have you ever wondered if your childhood nightlight contributed to your nearsightedness? Maybe you have children of your own, and you’re concerned that putting a nightlight in their room might cause the same problem. While this belief stems from a previous research study performed in the 1990s, more recent research has disproved this common eye care misconception. In fact, it’s now believed that placing a nightlight in a baby’s room might actually help improve their eyesight, teaching them to focus on light and develop eye coordination from a young age. 8. You don’t need regular eye exams if you have good vision. For many patients, annual eye exams seem a little excessive, especially if they don’t have any current eye problems. However, even individuals with 20/20 vision should have regular eye exams to ensure their vision stays in tip-top shape. Many eye diseases develop slowly over time—often without any real warning signs—but can lead to blindness, such as: Glaucoma Diabetic Retinopathy Cataracts Macular Degeneration Because these eye diseases develop without overt symptoms, it’s important to have annual eye exams, regardless of your current vision. Only a trained professional will be able to catch these conditions in their early stages, greatly increasing your likeliness of stopping them in their tracks and protecting your eyes. Many people still believe these common eye care misconceptions, which are often due to old research that experts have since disproved. However, you can protect your vision by learning more about eye care and adopting healthy. Credit: Mathervisiongroup

Hello Guys, this enquiry is for a "special" Friend of mine. Its been over a month now since She applied for a study Visa to Canada and her resumption date is 18th January, the problem now is that last week she received the NSE letter informing her to submit IELTS and a year statement of account on or before 14th of January. The major Challenge here is the IELTS, been that there is no schedule date for Paper based test till the 9th of January and the IELTS result she has, the score for the reading is less than 6. So sorry for your declining distance vision, Looks like you are shortsighted (progressive myopia). But note that glasses do not cure, People often misunderstood the use of glasses. Your vision gets corrected when you puts them on and goes back to how it was when you take them off. Unless maybe the purpose of the glasses is for vision training. Your Spectacle or contact lenses prescription will change as you age. So from time to time you will require new pairs of lenses to see clearer. Also note that there are other ocular conditions that can lead to reduced vision, so it is very important that you check into an Eye Center or Clinic for an intensive Eye Exam My dear you are not alone.

Health / Re: Is Glaucoma Hereditary? Can It Be Cured? by Arosam(m): 8:46am On Feb 09, 2020 |
Glaucoma AKA the silent thief of sight!, it can be hereditary or acquired. Its a group of eye disease that leads to Optic nerve damage usually characterized by ocular hypertension (increased eye pressure). There are of two types: Open angle glaucoma and closed angle glaucoma (acute). Now why is it called "the silent thief of sight"? The disease do not affect your central vision initially thereby giving you the false believe that nothing is wrong with your eyes. Nerves cells damage usually starts from the periphery, the ones responsible for side Vision. Note also that these peripheral nerve cells are populated by cells called (Rod Cell) this cells only sees black and white, so since we are in a colourful world we barely notice that something that may lead to Reduced Vision or possibly total blindness is happening to us. However, the good news is that the disease can be detected at an early stage. The reason why people are scared of this condition is because of Nigeria factor i.e we don't go for medical checkup unless we are in pain or something abnormal is discovered. So most patients usually become aware they have it at moderate to severe stage. The only way to avoid stories that touches the heart is to have a regular eye checkup. On a foot note, if you have already be diagnosed of glaucoma, fear not for there are remedies even though cure hasn't be discovered yet. The current treatment regimen involves the use of Antiglaucoma eyedrops, Special Formulations( Anti-oxidants), Surgery. Scientists are currently working on a lasting solution. Advice: We eat everyday because being alive depends on it. So the daily use of medication shouldn't be a problem. For those on medication, Think of it as your eyes will go hungry if you don't use them. Treatment might be a little expensive but not as expensive as Blindness 4 Likes 2 Shares |
