MRS AKEREDOLU ADVOCATES CONTINUOUS SENSITIZATION OF CITIZENS TO TACKLE CANCER

The wife of Ondo state governor Mrs Betty Anyanwu Akeredolu says the present administration is committed to making Ondo state a model for others across the federation in the area of qualitative, accessible and affordable cancer treatment.

Mrs Anyanwu-Akeredolu while presenting a paper titled ” Ondo state cancer project” at the annual general meeting and scientific conference of the Association of Radiation and Clinical Oncologists of Nigeria, (ARCON) explained that the state government through the provision of comprehensive facilities for the prevention, detection and treatment of the disease intends to demystify the cancer so that people will no longer see scourge as a death sentence.

The fist lady therefore made a strong case for consistent advocacy on the part of political leaders so that the nation’s healthcare system can yield the desired results.

She equally advised healthcare providers and civil society organisations to engage government at all levels to act more responsibly in ensuring the formulation and implementation of a cancer care and control plan for the benefit of the masses.

For the national president of ARCON, Dr Festus Igbinoba, cancer treatment in Nigeria today deserves greater attention in terms of training of personnel and upgrading of facilities, saying corporate bodies need to be more alive in fulfilling their social responsibilities.

Other stakeholders called on wealthy individuals to support government in the campaign to defeat cancer saying healthy citizenry is a prerequisite for a prosperous nation.

Civil Service as a government institution plays important part in insuring that government policies result in tangible services for the population. In fact, without the body of professional civil servants, national government cannot function effectively and efficiently.

The Civil service is the entity that is charged with the responsibility of carrying out government policies, providing services to the public and keeping the machinery of government running.

The Civil Service also helps the government to generate revenue as well as Advises the government in the carrying out of their duties. The Civil Service is able to advice government how a new policy will inure to the benefit of the people or otherwise.

The Civil Servant is expected to be non-partisan and therefore it functions to serve every government that comes into power. This ensures that there is continuity in the administration of the country.

The immediate past governor of Ondo state, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, said in his farewell broadcast to the people of the state that one of the insurmountable challenges his administration faced in its eight years of administering the state, was its inability to pay salaries as at when due. At the last count, his administration owed workers seven months’ salaries.

In Ondo State, the state government Civil Service has been enmeshed in myriads of problems: weak governance structure, red-tapism, weak accountability, low professional standards, waste and corruption, poor productivity, and lack of control, redundancy and over-bloated staff structure. To suffer a result-oriented and modern civil service, consecutive governments in the state have introduced reforms aimed at ameliorating the efficiency and effectiveness of the civil service in Ondo State.

while in the Judiciary system, Akeredolu paid the outstanding salaries of the month of August 2016 to December 2016 with the sum of 653,427,671.25,

Education / Ondo State Attains 90 Percent Literacy Rates by Ashleyeniwin(f): 3:34pm On Sep 16, 2019
Education is the key to everything that is good in our world today. Advances in computers, information technology, math, medicine, psychology, engineering and every other discipline would be impossible if education did not let us build on the advances of the great minds that came before us.

The formal education system in Nigeria is the 9-3- 4 system. Nigeria’s literacy rate is estimated at 61%. Nigeria has a large number of out-of-school children and young adults with limited literacy and numeracy skills who have little hope of ever joining the formal workforce.

Forty-two percent of 6- to 16year-olds in the Southwest are Muslims, and the majority of these children (60 percent) attend only Qur’anic school, where they are not taught the formal curriculum. Unlike in the Northern part of Nigeria, almost two-thirds of students are functionally illiterate.

Meanwhile The Southwest region has fairly high pre-primary, primary, junior secondary school (JSS) and senior secondary school (SSS) net attendance rates at around 80 percent, though it still has not achieved universal basic education. Literacy rates, at 75 percent, are also much higher than the national average of 40–46 percent.

By age 11, most children in Southwest Nigeria have entered school. A large proportion of 12- to 14-year-olds are still in primary school, partly a result of students starting primary school late or repeating some classes. Children aged 6–11 in the poorest households are slightly less likely to attend primary school (89 percent), and interventions should be targeted to this group.

Secondary School-Age Children School attendance for children age 12–16, the official secondary school ages, is high (90 percent), but many young teenagers are over-age primary school students—a problem for households of all income levels. By age 16, more students have left school. Although the attendance rates for secondary are low for this age group, they grow steadily to 85 percent by age 15.

In Ondo state the education system is fast and Literacy rates is at 90 % which is higher than the 40 – 46 percent which is the universal basic education.

While in August 2018, some students from St. peter’s secondary school, Dominion science Owo, and Greater tomorrow primary school, Ikare Akoko. Ojo Victor and Adejumo Daniel, Kayode Daniel, and Fayehun Olalekan represented Ondo state at the science teachers’ association of Nigeria (STAN) Competition at Kastina in project, quiz for both primary and secondary students. These students came first position trophies and other gift items, overall best physical science and written quiz and overall best basic science.

In October 2018 Ondo state was represented by two students from St. peter’s unity secondary school Akure Aro Elizabeth and Ojo Victor respectively at the national science and technology fair held at Umuahia Abia state. Where they perform excellently well. Elizabeth and Ojo came first position to represent Nigeria at the International Science fair OK-SEF in Turkey between 10th and 19th June, 2019.

In October 2018 students from St. peter’s unity secondary school Akure Aro Elizabeth and Ojo Victor respectively also represented Ondo state at the NTA/ETV National science and technology Expo where they came 2nd position Nationwide, and got Trophy, laptop and other gift items.

ALLEGATIONS AGAINST GOVERNOR AKEREDOLU ON UNIMED’S VACANCIES APPLICATION CHARGES UNTRUE – OJOGO

The Ondo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon Donald Ojogo has described as untrue, the allegations against Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on charges attached to vacancies application into the University of Medical Sciences UNIMED.

In a statement, Ojogo said the administration of Governor Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN upon assumption of office, promised to instill good governance in all sectors of the administration.

According to the statement, the government remains unwavering in this regard. This avowed commitment is further given potency by Mr. Governor’s mantra of Thinking Anew, Acting Anew.

The purpose of appointing aides and other lieutenants in government is to share responsibilities, believing that such would be judiciously deployed for good governance. For emphasis therefore, Governor Akeredolu, after approving the request to fill vacancies and shortfalls in the Teaching Hospital, did not need to usurp the responsibilities and functions of the Chief Medical Director who is the Chief Executive Officer of the tertiary medical institution.

It is perhaps, imperative for me to state that rather than being offended or hurt by such pardonable conclusions arising from the subject matter, a clear and precise response to all such insinuations linking Mr Governor directly, with same is pertinent.

Politics / N50b Bond For Road Projects, Others –igbasan by Ashleyeniwin(f): 11:56am On Sep 16, 2019
The N50 billion bond recently approved by the Ondo State House of Assembly is to be expended on major roads in the state in order to bring relief to the citizens, The hope has learnt.

Among the road projects are the Atijere-Aboto, Okeagbe-Afin-Eshe-Ogbagi, Araromi/Lekki, Ore flyover and the newly flagged off Oda road.

The hint was dropped by the state Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Pastor Emmanuel Igbasan during an interview with The Hope.

He said infrastructural development and security are the major impectus that drive the economy and noted that investment in infrastructure particularly road is a right investment.

His words:”Two things drive the economy, one is infrastructure and the second is security. These are the two critical elements that attract investments. For example, the new industrial park in Ore has been connected to the national grid. So, we expect influx of industries and companies into that area. That is the magic. If we create the environment, other things will fall in place.

When these people produce their goods, they need good roads to move on. So, constructing roads is laying a good foundation for sustainable economic growth,” he maintained.

The commissioner said the people can now start to estimate the quantum of the benefits that would be derived from these projects when completed because of the cost of transport that will be greatly reduced .

He said for now, the state is yet to configure its productive index to be able to tell the economic benefits of à specific project.

He said the bond is not even enough to pay the outstanding money of contracts already awarded in the state. “Let me take Atijere road that was just re-awarded last week. When it was awarded in 2016, it was N12 billion, but when this administration reviewed that contract when the former contractor refused to do anything, we re-awarded it for N8 billion, saving the state N4 billion and yet we have not given the contractor a dime.

So if one road is gulping N8 billion, what about the 28.9 kilometers Akoko/Irun side for another 8 to N12 billion, the Araromi- Lekki road, the dualization of Oda road. I can go on and on. By the time I mention 10 projects, N50 billion is gone. Is it the Ore Flyover that work is ongoing. That is about N8 billion project,” he added.

He listed other projects that will benefit from the bond to include the ongoing ultra modern 500 UNIMED Teaching Hospital Complex, reticulation of dams, rural electrification among others.

Igbasan who said bond has always been one of the means to balance state budget and as well gives room for borrowing, submitted that N50 billion for Ondo State Government is just a tip of an iceberg compared to the masses oriented projects lined up for the people.

He said taking a bond is the best thing to happen in order to ensure that work continues, saying Akeredolu led administration has performed creditably well in all the five critical areas set for the administration.

On the implementation of the State 2019 budget, Igbasan declared that the budget as at June was 54 percent implemented and that it was on a positive side, saying that there is quarterly assessment of the budget where the report of projects execution will be reviewed.

He said the 2018 budget of progress has laid solid foundation for the 2019 budget of leveraging the gains of 2018 which he said was in tandem with the development and strategic plan of the government.

The commissioner was optimistic that 2020 budget will be signed into law before the end of this year.

On the focus of the 2020 budget, Igbasan said it will focus on impacting lives of the people positively, their businesses and their environments

GOVERNOR AKEREDOLU ORDERS LIFE INSURANCE FOR JOURNALISTS IN GOVERNMENTS PRESS CREW

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State on Wednesday ordered that all the members of his office Press Crew be placed on life group Insurance Scheme in view of hazard attached with the discharge of their duties.

The governor also stressed the need for members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) across the country to take group insurance scheme of the Union serious and ensure they subscribe to it.

Akeredolu gave the advice in Akure during a courtesy visit in honour of the TVC Best Reporter of 2019, Mr Ayodeji Moradeyo.

It was gathered that Mr Ayodeji Moradeyo, TVC Correspondent, Ondo State, was awarded Best TV Reporter for 2019 in the Electronic Media category at the 9th Ondo State Media Award organised by Impact Media Group.

Akeredolu explained that the issue of group insurance was very important considering the rate at which journalists travel regular and going to dangerous places to perform their duties, hence the need for NUJ members to get insured.

The governor directed offices of the Secretary to the state government, the governor’s Chief of Staff, the Head of Service as well as the Commissioner for Information, Donald Ojogo to work out how journalists attached with the Government House Press Crew would be insured by the state government.

“Every profession has its own hazards. You are insured for everything, not just accidents alone. Group insurance is good and cheap,” he said.

The governor further lauded the efforts of Moradeyo and advised him to continue to give his best.

“This is reward for your tireless labour. I congratulate you on our part as a government, and we appreciate your work here with us.”

Earlier, Mr Ayodeji Moradeyo, TVC reporter, thanked the governor for the special recognition, and lauded his efforts in ongoing and completed projects spanning the state.

“I thank you for your efforts in Ondo State. The people can also see the laudable project you have embarked on,” he said.

Also, Mr Donald Ojogo, Commissioner for Information, described Moradeyo as someone who had traversed the broad spectrum of the broadcast industry.

“He was the state correspondent for Glaxy TV before moving to TVC. We have been around together for some time doing the same work.

“We were enthralled by his positive exploits. He has brought glory to himself and his family,” he said.

Similarly, Mr Tona Aderoboye, Chairman NUJ, Ondo State, also congratulated the award recipient Moradeyo and described the reception by the governor as unprecedented.

Aderoboye commended the governor for creating a conducive environment for journalists to thrive in the state particularly the recent appointment of NUJ members into his Media Team and his administration’s laudable projects.

The NUJ Chairman presented a letter to the governor notifying him of his Investiture as NUJ Grand Patron in the state and honouring him with an award over infrastructural development in the state.

Aderoboye thanked the governor for his pronouncement to insure members of his press crew, adding that it was a commendable step.

The Investiture will take place in the last week of November, 2019 during a weeklong Press Week of the Union in ondo state.

Presidential Election Tribunal Verdict: Akeredolu Congratulates APC, Buhari

It is with a deep sense of responsibility that the Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin OLUWAROTIMI O. AKEREDOLU, SAN joins numerous other Nigerians to congratulate our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and indeed, our dear President Muhammedu Buhari over this historic judicial victory. It is undoubtedly, a national victory for all Nigerians.

According to Governor Akeredolu, the verdict exuded a combination of very enthralling components which have contributed in no small measure, to the Nation's jurisprudence. The analytical precisions as well as the near-faultless conclusions have deepened judiciality. The enviable industry collectively deployed by the reverred Lordships also depicts great hope for Nigeria's electoral process.

Mr Governor believes that, notwithstanding the right of the main opposition and its Presidential Candidate to test the verdict at the Apex Court, the right time for less distractions in our polity is now. This is more so that, the current security challenges require a mere passing attention but a dexterous unanimity of purpose and national amity devoid of political colourations.

Signed:

Donald Ojogo,
Commissioner for Information & Orientation
