Kaduna State Governor, Muktar Yero, has nominated Nuhu Bajoga as the Deputy Governor of the state. The State’s Commissioner of Information, Saidu Adamu, briefed newsmen on Monday after the governor met with Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, officials and principal officers of the state House of Assembly. Bajoga, who hails from Southern Kaduna is from the same local government as the widow of late governor, Mrs. Amina Yakowa. Prior to the appointment, Mr. Bajoga was the Chairman of the ruling PDP, in the state. The Commissioner of Information said Mr. Bajoga’s name has been submitted to the assembly for screening. The post of Deputy Governor became vacant in the state after Patrick Yakowa, the former governor of the state, died in a crash penultimate Saturday. http://premiumtimesng.com/regional/112486-kaduna-gets-new-deputy-governor.html?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=kaduna-gets-new-deputy-governor We hope to see many Good things out of this... The speculated choice of Ambassador Nuhu Bajoga Audu for the deputy governorship seat in Kaduna state has received a knock from a group of concerned professionals from the southern part of the state. Bajoga is the state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP). The protest came as facts emerged on how Bajoga, who, barring any last minute change will be announced this week, was effortlessly anointed for the state’s number two seat. His choice was reportedly ratified by PDP stakeholders meeting presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo last Saturday, with the state governor, Mukhtar Ramalan Yero and other PDP big wigs in attendance. But the decision to have him as deputy had been taken penultimate Sunday, a day after the death of Sir Patrick Yakowa and the swearing in of Yero as new governor. A source at a meeting of southern Kaduna political elites held yesterday, told our correspondent that immediately after Yero’s swearing in, Bajoga received a text message from Sambo’s office, asking him to be prepared to become deputy governor. He however clarified that the vice president was not aware of the plot. According to the source, the meeting invited Bajoga and advised him to allow a younger man from southern Kaduna to take up the position, a request the PDP leader turned down. He reportedly said that in politics one does not decline an appointment because that could be interpreted as an act of disloyalty and victimisation may follow. Meanwhile, the Concerned Southern Kaduna Professionals has rejected Bajoga’s speculated choice. A joint statement by their spokespersons, Dr. John Danfulani, Dr. Kyari Yates and Vincent Bodam, said “This is a calculated political exclusion of our people with long term effects by those who wish to exploit the untimely death of our governor to plant political and economic mines in Southern Kaduna in order to foster their repressive tendencies of yesteryears.” http://blueprintng.com/2012/12/kaduna-group-faults-bajogas-choice-as-deputy/

After having his manhood amputated by a neighbour, 12-year-old Ayuba Halilu and his parents have to choose between two options: allow Ayuba to remain a male without manhood or undergo sex change to become female. The story of 12-year-old Ayuba Halilu of Mararraban Liman Katagum village in Bauchi Local Government Area of Bauchi State is a pathetic one. Being the easy going boy his fellow villagers say he is, he agreed to accompany his neighbour Tukur Iliyasu to a nearby bush to fetch firewood. Unknown to young Ayuba, however, Tukur had a sinister plan. In their accounts of the incident, the villagers said when Tukur and Ayuba reached the bush, the former over powered the latter and cut off his manhood together with testis as well as cut his neck and stomach with knife. Ayuba was left unconscious in the pool of his own blood. He was later rescued by the police and some good Samaritans who took him to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital Bauchi. He was later transferred to the Federal Medical Center, Gombe for further medical attention. Meanwhile, Tukur fled the village to an unknown destination and till date no one knows his whereabouts. Police Public Relations Officer ASP Hassan Mohammed Auyo said “the prime suspect (Tukur) is still at large.” Investigations by Weekly Trust revealed that parents of the prime suspect had sold their only house in Mararraban Liman Katagum, for fear of the unknown, and left to a destination no one knows, making it difficult to apprehend the suspect. Weekly Trust gathered that “when the boy returned from Federal Medical Center, Gombe, his parents through the assistance of Governor Isa Yuguda’s aide wrote a letter informing the state government of their plight. Yuguda directed the State Commissioner for Health Dr. Sani Malami to find out the boy’s condition and advise him accordingly. Dr. Malami also donated N200,000 to the family on behalf of Governor Isa Yuguda and announced to the governor’s pledge to pick up all medical expenses incurred in the course of treating the boy and bring the culprit to book. Yuguda eventually paid a personal visit to the boy. However, Weekly Trust gathered that Ayuba’s trouble took another dimension shortly after Yuguda’s visit as disagreement ensued between the parents of the boy and the officials of the Bauchi State Ministry of Health. Ayuba was also taken to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. Ayuba’s parents accused the officials of the Ministry of Health of not taking the treatment of the little boy seriously. They said the officials supposed to take their full responsibility even if it means taking their boy outside the country for treatment. The parents alleged that they had to borrow money before they completed the last 27 days in the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital because the N400,000 given to them by the state Health Commissioner was exhausted during test and investigations in the teaching hospital. They also said that the initial N200, 000 given to them by the government was used to settle the debt on the treatment of the boy at Gombe Federal Medical Center. But the commissioner said “the parents of the boy were ungrateful to the government, because he has to force them to take the boy to the teaching hospital in Maiduguri after they had collected the N400,000 and he knows the consultant there he is capable to treat the little Ayuba. “When they reached Maiduguri, the parents of the boy said they were asked to go to Maiduguri instead of taking them to abroad as directed by the governor, and alleged that the parents of the boy refused to cooperate with the consultant, and there is no way I can advise the government to take you abroad after I know that we have good doctors who are capable of treating the boy here in Nigeria.” Weekly Trust obtained a copy of the medical report for the treatment of the boy from the Department of Surgery University of Maiduguri signed by Dr. Chubado Tahir, Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon. The report, which was sent to the Bauchi State Health Commissioner, was titled “Re: Ayuba Halilu Liman, 12 year old male Hosp; No 280941.” It thanked the commissioner for “referring the above 12-year-old boy who had his Instruments amputated and throat cut following assault. On review, we found the intelligent boy who was depressed otherwise fit, had total amputation of the Instruments, including the scrotum and testes, the area was completely healed and there was also a healed scar on the neck.” The report added that “basic investigations were done including hormonal assay and the results were within normal limits except testosterone which was the lower limit, psychiatrists invited to review him made a diagnosis of depression which he was placed on antidepressants, absence of the testes which is the primary source of male hormones enormously complicates the treatment options, these include 1. Reconstructing Male Instruments and placing him on testosterone replacement for life, this has serious draw backs because of the need to use implant and the long term complication from the use of testosterone, and also uncertainty of the patient being able or willing to use it for life.” According to the report, the second option is “constructing a female Instruments and basically gender reassignment, this is an easier option and less challenging, however because of his age, he has developed a personality and already has male friends. This is also a difficult option, I have discussed with our pediatric surgeons in light of their experience in managing cases of ambiguous Instruments and we agree on these options, all of the above have been explained to the parents, I also sought the opinion of Dr. Raja Sabaphaty, a world renown plastic and reconstructive surgeon, in India who strongly believes the gender reassignment is the best option, which ever option the parents decide, it is my belief thatthey can get the best available treatment from Dr. Sabaphaty, if that is the case I will be glad to write a referral.” Father of the boy Malam Halilu Liman told newsmen that “government was silent sincewhen we came back from the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health invited us to choose changing the boyfrom male to become female or to help him to become male without manhood, and we chose to help the boy to become male without manhood. But since then, we did nothear anything from the officials of the state Ministry of Health.” Malam Halilu appealed to Governor Yuguda to intervene and save the life of the boy. “He(Ayuba) hardly goes seven straight days without falling ill. We are grateful for what the governor did to help bring the boy to his present condition. We will appreciate it if more can be done.” Dr. Malami said if the parents of the boy choose the option of gender reassignment for the boy to become female then they should go to the ministry and inform him and he will take all the necessary action “because the best option for the boy is to turn him to a female.” The commissioner said they have asked religious scholars who cautioned against turning the boy to a girl and reiterated the commitment of the ministry to assist the boyas promised by Governor Yuguda. Meanwhile, Bauchi State Government has pledged to pay N2 million to anybody who will give useful information that will lead to the arrest of the culprit that cut off Ayuba’s manhood. For now, young Ayuba’s fate hangs in the balance as people wait to see the next action his parents or government will take.

A worker at a waste disposal site has found 10,000 yen cash in a stream of pulverised rubbish, police say. “There were about a thousand (10,000) yen (N 18, 080, 000) bills that came out of a pulveriser unscathed,” a spokesman at the Asaminami police department in Hiroshima prefecture, in Japan’s west, said today. He added that there were also 2300 fragments of bills destroyed by the machine at a municipal facility that processes large waste, such as cupboards and mattresses, that cannot be collected by regular garbage pick-up. Police suspect the owner of the cash might have forgotten the money was there when he or she threw away some furniture. “We believe it is unlikely there is anything criminal in this, although we must say we don’t know much about this money at all,” the spokesman said. The cash was found on Monday. If no one comes forward within three months, the waste disposal facility will have the right to claim the money, the spokesman said.

For a man whose political career was propelled by other peoples deaths much more dramatically than that of perhaps any other politician in the country (except the President of course), it is somewhat ironic that it is the same cold hands of death that brought his career to an abrupt, shocking, and sad end. Sir Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa (fondly called “Na Kowa”), died in a helicopter accident at the weekend as Kaduna State governor. He became governor after the death of President Umaru Yaradua and the subsequent elevation of the then Governor Namadi Sambo to the Vice Presidency. Prior to this, late Sir Yakowa was the deputy Governor of Kaduna State a position that was thrust onto him after the death of the erstwhile deputy governor Stephen Shekari. And much earlier than all of that, it was still death (of General Sani Abacha) that in fact brought him to national political limelight when he was appointed a Minister by General Abdulsalami Abubakar. Like the death of Yaradua before him, the passing of Yakowa is a major political game changer in the State. The extent to which the game would change cannot be fully appreciated in these early days but some things are already apparent even for non-political observers like myself. Below I outline some of them…. Let’s start with the most apparent. Power has shifted back to Northern Kaduna. This in itself has several implications. First, it means that barring any cataclysmic game-changing event like the one that brought Yakowa to power, power is likely to remain in the northern parts of the State (Kaduna North and Kaduna Central Senatorial Zones). This simply is because democracy is a game of numbers and in Kaduna State it is played by ethno-religious rules. Going by the voter registration figures of 2011, the chances of a candidate from the southern part of the State winning the governorship elections is as slim as the chances of a Hausa winning in Plateau State or a Muslim winning the Chairmanship of Zangon Kataf LG. Of course everything changes if the significance given to ethnicity and religion by both sides (there are sides) in the politics of the State is reduced. But don’t hold your breath because it’s a long long way coming, if ever. If you want to know why, go to any tertiary institution in the State and look around. You are bound to find several notices of meetings by Student Associations of different States. But when it comes to Kaduna you are likely to find two notices; one from the Zazzau forum (meant loosely to represent students from the North of the State) and another from the student wing of SOKAPU (Southern Kaduna Peoples Union). In other words even the younger generation (the future leaders) have adopted the existing fault-lines. So when the future eventually comes and it’s their turn to play the politics in the state, chances are both camps (there are camps too) will play the game by the same rules as did their forebears because those rules are the only ones they know. Secondly, a shift of the governorship position from the south to the north means that the internal zoning arrangement (unwritten of course like all other zoning arrangements) will have to be adjusted to reflect current realities. The position of the secretary to the state government for instance, currently held by Lawal Samaila Yakawada (form Giwa LG in Northern Kaduna), will have to be given to someone from Southern Kaduna. Same with the PDP Chairmanship currently held by Nuhu Bajoga (from Southern Kaduna) will have to move to the North. And if there is a shakeup at the Federal cabinet, a minister like Hadiza Mailafiya is not likely to return for not being from Southern Kaduna which normally gets the ministerial slot. http://gainaako./2012/12/21/another-political-game-changer-in-kaduna/

Five children between the ages of 4 and 12 were killed in an inferno in the Kirikiri area of Lagos State on Thursday. It was learnt that the five children, Emeka 12, Ifeanyi 10, Chinasa eight, Joy six, and Bright four, who are of the same parents, were burnt alive at their home located at 29 Comfort Oboh Street, Kirikiri. The parents of the victims were identified as Ogbonna and Margaret Igwuagwu. Our correspondent learnt that although over 30 people live in the compound, which was completely consumed by the fire, only the five children died. Sympathisers were said to have surrounded the premises crying and wailing over the incident, while charred remains of the victims were being evacuated. According to residents, the fire started at about 11.30 pm in the room where the five children were sleeping and later spread to other rooms all made of wood. The parents of the children were said to have locked them inside the room and lit a candle for them as there was no electricity supply. Neighbours said it was the usual habit of theparents to lock the children inside the room whenever they were going to their shop in the evening. It was learnt that the children slept off while the candle fell, thereby spreading the fire to other parts of the room. Woken by theheat, they were said to have shouted for help while the fire raged, but neighbours were too busy saving themselves. One of the neighbours said the eldest son, Emeka, had begged his parents not to lock them in but allow them to spend sometime outside but their mother refused. “I can vividly remember when Mama Emeka ordered her children to go and sleep, saying that she needed to go back to attend to customers who were waiting for her. Emeka, the eldest, pleaded that they should be allowed to stay outside for a while. “She insisted that they should go to bed since they were to travel the following day. I believe that it was in a bid to prevent them from running out of the house that she locked them inside and went away with the key,” she said. Some neighbours told journalists that they heard the wailing of the children when the fire was raging, but could not break through to rescue them due to a hard burglar proof that was used at the entrance of the room. According to residents who witnessed the incident, firefighters were informed but could not get to the scene due to bad roads in Kirirkiri. A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “The road is not passable and there is always traffic congestion in thatarea. Men of the Naval Fire Service got here first, but they could not help the situation because the damage had already been done.” One of the tenants, Udoh Bassey, whose room was also burnt, told journalists that no one could say exactly what caused the fire. “It started at about 11.30 pm when some of us were still awake. It was the cry from that room that attracted my attention. The entire compound was razed down before help could come our way. I was able to save a few of my property because my room was located far away from the source of the fire. “The children died because their parents locked them inside the house and went backto their shops close by. We tried but before we could reach them, there was an explosion from one room to the other as all the other rooms were razed down.” When contacted, spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide, said the parents of the victims had suffered shock and were rushed to hospital. “At about 11.20pm, police received a call that a house in Kirikiri was on fire. The house was made of wood and corrugated iron sheets and the fire engulfed it. Five children died in the fire,” she said.
