Hearme: One of my sisters served in Biu in Borno state. She had to learn some Kanuri to communicate to secondary school students. It just might imply that they where taught in Kanuri in primary school. I think it might not be a good suggestion as that might worsen the results of students who must pass English to be admitted into higher institutions

...and who said English is being done away with?

Yoruba first, colonial language second!

Haven't you noticed that a good chunk of Yoruba posters on this forum write Yoruba as eloquently as English? We already speak Yoruba language as our first language, anyway and doing so hasn't made us deficient. Now tell me how using Yoruba as a communication medium in our schools and on our land, would now make us deficient in the English language. If I read correctly, the report never said that English was going to be omitted from the curriculum. It still remains a core subject and at least a credit would still be required to progress on to higher education.

I don't see France or Grrmany complaining about not being able to communicate with Britain all because English isn't their first languages.

boldy235: This would be a practical attempt to divide the country . It may improve the sense of unity amongst the people of the south west and the opposite with other ethnic groups, there by taking us back to the times before 1914 .

Our leaders think they are rational , but the are not.
they make no attempt to unite the country!
Many people ave found love and friendship with people of other ethnic groups , but our leaders take it for granted .

These actions even if they are carried out will come with some unfortunate consequences

Our graduates from the southwest will be poorer in English language
The students may as a resul fell inferior
Hence the private schools in the region will make more money ,

I pray that our leaders would find ways to truly unite this nation !
A united Nigeria would be more powerful than a single regional entity !

Don't worry for us Argentina...

Mind your own bizz wax!

If you are going to talk about someone's use of verbs and tenses, you should at least know the difference between "taught" and "thought"

Ela! Oju kan!

Bullseye! Tell the dull head who graduated from apprenticeship in his uncle's spare parts shop at Ladipo, please!

I don't know what gave these dredges of the society the effrontery to talk back at a Yoruba. They really don't know their places.

Well, they had better get used to it because their headache is about to progress into migraine which hopefully worsen into a tumour.

proudlysports: I don;t support this move. Now I'm an advocate of developing a local Nigerian language as lingua franca and using this language as a tool for teaching in schools but for South West states to adopt yoruba will further polarise the nation. First you are saying a teacher who can't speak the language will not be able to teach in any of the schools in the southwest. Maybe the eastern guys will say ok, let's adopt Igbo language and the northern guys will say let's adopt Hausa. At the end we will have separate states which makes no sense to me.

Way forward is to develop a local language. My suggestion is our own formalised version of Pigin English - Why not? Why do we have the Soyinkas, Chimandas, etc if we cannot develop a local language over the next 4-5 years?

You are beginning to see the bigger picture'

Nigeria is a big farce and no matter how we choose to patch it up, the fact that we are fundamentally different is undeniable!

The UK being a state consisting four nations still stands because they can at least understand one another when the speak. Nigeria is so false that if we must communicate with each other, we would have to speak in a colonial language! My grandmother can not speak English yet you say she is same as an ibo by virtue of being forced to be a Nigerian.

I have absolutely nothing in common with an ibo or Hausa and the earlier we start facing that fact, the better for each nation.

plasmadocument: I hear you. Awesome, Lovely concept, etc. Tomorrow they will want to migrate to English speaking countries for greener pastures. Then they will use IELTS to deal with you. Nonsense. We do not need to be instructed in our local languages. We are 150 million and our language is not and will not be threatened. When it comes to Education, all we need is just a conducive environment,(classroom) where our kids will study. We need our teachers to be well motivated so that they can value their job and teach with passion.Let the Governors use our money to develop our place, give us good roads, water and electricity and we will stay in Yoruba land and speak all the Yoruba they want. angry

There is Nigeria and there is Yorubaland. There is 'we' and there is 'we-we'. Nigeria being a federal state gives us (Yorubas) certain powers to make certain policies and these policies are in line with the constitution so in this case, your opinion with regard to how Yorubas wish to govern its domain is moot. Nigeria gives you the right to reside wherever you wish in Nigeria but does not give you the right to violate the laws of your host state. If you are not happy with the manner in which we have chosen to live in our region, pack your ibo must go and get out! Simples!

Not knowing how to speak English is not the start and end of everything. South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore don't speak English and they teach in their local languages, but see where they are today.
.

I cannot believe that you suggested Lagos' exclusion from this policy!

Just because we had the capital of the country thrusted upon us does not mean we are now less Yoruba!

Any DAWN idea must be spearheaded by Eko as a matter of fact!

Nah, I give people a long rope to hang themselves and enjoy watching them doing so.

Moreover, this being a faceless forum, anyone can claim to be whoever they choose. It is up to the reader to take it or leave it or if the claimant is willing - to prove it. My purpose here is not to prove what is mine to strangers and omo ales from the other side of the Naija. Every non Yoruba now wants a stake of Lagos, so they would go to any lent to do and say whatever it takes to make them feel like they are part of its progress. If they had a place to be proud of, this wouldn't be so.

Let's pity them.

Freeglobe d She-Male

I read through all ur posts and saw in it, d pathetic story of iboe-life. Tell me, if two sons of d same father have issues, isnt it something normal dat occurs in human life?

Assozy may not be a Lagosian, but did u see him deny his father's Land of Oduduwa?.

She-Male, u should hold ur heads in shame for not been able to boast confidently of ur forefather's land (Eze Nri), which u do by hiding under the banner of "one Nigeria".
U should be ASHAMED of been part of another man's ancestor land and not your father. grin

Lagos may not be my indigenous home, but its my ancestral home.
May i ask omo nna
Is Lagos the land of ur fathers?

I fare better than you to claim it 'cos my ancestor Oduduwa would be happy seeing his son been proud of his land. If Eze was to be alive, im sure he would be in his cave bursting day & night in tears seeing his son Freeglobe deny him.

Take this clue: Blood is THICKER than water. Even when iboes are no where compared to "water" in this context, U SHOULD STILL BE ASHAMED you cant just do Eze Nri your father any proud!!!!! grin grin

au contraire mon frere. I am actually a fool blooded omo Eko. I chose to do away with the tag Lagosian as firstly, it is a name given to my hometown by colonial dregs; and secondly it seems every tom d1ck and harry uses it to claim some kind of entitlement to feel among. My home state is of course Lagos as that is what is legally recognised in Nigeria but culturally and traditionally, I am an Omo Eko through and through of the Esugbayi, the Eleko of Eko lineage. Either way, i'm first and foremost a Yoruba and proud to declare it.

What makes you think I don't kniw my own history? You think I'm not aware that Epe is a trading post of Ijebu-Ode? Anyone who is curious enough to dig a little will tell you that. However, that link, though strong, is cultural in nature only. Administratively, we are in Lagos State. Our contributions to the growth of this state cannot now be wished away, after over 45 years of contributing financially and intellectually to the commonwealth of Lagos.

Perhaps you may not have heard of the likes of S.L. Edu and other illustrious sons and daughters of Epe.

Abirun! You're now sounding like those African gypsies from the east of Nigeria. If you really are from Epe and a son of the soil, you will speak with swag and not like a stranger from the east! You don't even believe your own tripe anymore!
