PoliticsObong Uko Umoh: Leading Etinan To The Eldorado by Assamjnr(op): 1:49pm On Mar 06, 2024
Written by Comrade Essien Henshaw

Posted by Iky ASSAM Jnr., Lagos

It was former First Lady of the United States, Eleanor Rosalynn Carter, who famously said, ‘A leader takes people where they want to go. A GREAT leader takes people where they don’t necessarily want to go, but ought to be.’ Indeed, the sentiments expressed by the wife of former President Jimmy Carter strike a chord with the leadership style of Obong (Hon.) Uko Umoh, the Chairman of Etinan Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State.

Since assuming office just three months ago (in December 2023), this former Newspaper Publisher turned politician, famously known as ‘Uko Biafra‘ among close friends and political associates, has begun reshaping grassroots leadership, sparking positive change, and attracting commendations and eulogies across political party lines in all the 12 wards of Etinan.

One of the hallmark initiatives of his tenure thus far is his unwavering commitment to tackling unemployment among the youth of Etinan. Recognizing the pressing need for job opportunities, Hon. Umoh has embarked on a proactive job hunt in federal establishments in Abuja, the Nation’s capital, specifically for the Iman Ibom people who are currently unemployed.

In a recent meeting with the Special Assistant to the Minister of Interior on Communication and Strategy, Engr Uwakmfon Michael, himself an Iman Ibom son, Hon. Umoh passionately expressed his vision for human capacity development and employment for sons and daughters of Etinan. He emphasized the importance of providing opportunities for all deserving indigenes, irrespective of their family background, religion, or political affiliations.

Obong Umoh was quoted as saying, “I do not have anybody in mind; all I know is that any Etinan person who merits an opportunity should be given a chance.”

Central to his strategy is the establishment of registration points where graduates from Etinan local government can submit their qualifications and areas of specialization. This initiative will create a comprehensive database of unemployed youths, allowing Hon. Umoh to easily connect them with employment opportunities at both state and federal levels.

Engr Uwakmfon Michael, the SA to the Hon. Minister, was reported to have expressed his delight at the proactive measures taken by his Chairman and pledged full support in ensuring that qualified indigenes of their local government area are given priority in any job opportunities within the ministry.

Indeed, Hon. Umoh’s commitment to alleviating poverty and empowering Iman Ibom extends beyond job creation. He has taken concrete steps by launching a committee to address the challenges posed by abandoned government structures including electric transformers, public water and other amenities within the local government area, demonstrating a holistic approach to grassroots development. It seems that Uko Biafra is closely following in the footsteps of Governor Umo Eno, who is on the verge of establishing the State’s Infrastructure and Assets Management Agency to repair and maintain all government-owned buildings, roads, equipment, and land.

In just three months in office, Obong Uko Umoh has proven beyond words that he was ready for service. He has connected the Local Government Council Secretariat to the national grid, which was facing blackout for over a decade, initiated road grading across the 64 gazetted villages in Etinan, made massive investments in education, agriculture, and sports. What’s more, he has been incredibly accessible to his people, even at odd hours, mingling with them and demystifying the office of chairman.

In view of the above and more, many stakeholders, including the supervisors in the local government, have unanimously passed a vote of confidence in Hon. Uko Umoh for changing the narrative of grassroots leadership in Etinan. They express their determination to work with him to support the ARISE agenda of Governor Umo Eno.

In the words of John C. Maxwell, ‘Good leaders know the way, go the way, and show the way.’ Obong (Hon.) Uko Umoh exemplifies this sentiment, embodying the transformative power of servant leadership and dedicating himself wholeheartedly to the betterment of Iman Ibom. In just 3 months, Etinan is not just witnessing change; it is on the path to Eldorado, embracing a future filled with promise and opportunity under a servant leader who is leading the way to prosperity and progress.

PoliticsFood Subsidy Initiative: Gov. Umo Eno's Altruistic Leadership In Action by Assamjnr(op): 8:05pm On Mar 04, 2024
Henshaw NYONG.

A famous philosopher and expert in management, Robert K. Greenleaf, once said, 'Good leaders must first become good servants.' In today's Nigeria, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno represents this idea. This Cleric-turned Politician is the type of leader Greenleaf talked about because his actions, projects, and programmes since assuming office have shown that he is a rare leader that is eager to serve the people of Akwa Ibom and cares about their well-being.

It is disheartening to note that since the government at the centre announced the removal of fuel subsidies, the country has faced significant economic challenge. This decision has exacerbated the situation, leading to skyrocketing prices of goods and commodities, resulting in unprecedented levels of hardship not experienced or heard of since Nigeria's independence. In fact, across the entire nation, families are grappling with the inability to afford basic necessities including food, with many unable to even afford one meal a day.

Akwa Ibom State is not exempt from these hardships. I am aware of a family with five children who are rationing their meals. If three eat today, the remaining two must wait until tomorrow and make do with only water to survive. As I said, this situation is not unique to my state; it is prevalent across Nigeria as we speak.

Eureka! In the midst of this dire situation, Governor Umo Eno's announcement of the proposed Akwa Ibom State Bulk Purchase Agency offers a glimmer of relief and hope for the impoverished in the State. Of course, the timing could not be more opportune, as this laudable initiative aims to provide essential food items to the most vulnerable segments of Akwa Ibom's population at subsidized rates. More over, with the Agency situated within the Governor's Office, under Governor Umo Eno's direct oversight, there is a sense of confidence that this commendable programme will be effectively managed and executed.

It is important to stress that while some Governors in other States merely talk about solving the problems of their people, Pastor Umo Eno is actively taking steps to help the people of Akwa Ibom, particularly during these challenging times. The details outlining how the food subsidy programme in Akwa Ibom will operate divulge Governor Umo Eno's genuine concern for the welfare of Akwa Ibomites, especially those who are impoverished.

During the first Sunday service in March at All Nations Christian Ministry International, where he worshipped with his wife, Deaconess Patience Eno, and several state functionaries, the Governor shared an uplifting news. He informed how his administration has finalized plans to utilize the State Government's Social Register to distribute food vouchers; making sure that the assistance reaches those most in need while preventing misuse of the programme.

The Governor therefore warned mischief makers, to desist from attempting to thwart government's good intention to stabilize the cost of staple food in the state, announcing that, anyone caught, would face the full weight of the law.

However, I believe that the success of this very laudable initiative hinges on collective effort and support from all stakeholders, especially the wealthy in the State. It is imperative that all hands must be on deck to safeguard the integrity of the food subsidy initiative and prevent any attempts to thwart the Governor's well-intentioned efforts. In doing so, we would not only support Governor Umo Eno's altruistic leadership, but also contribute to the realization of his broader vision for Akwa Ibom as encapsulated in his ARISE Agenda.

Therefore, as we eagerly anticipate this relief which will definitely reach all the nooks and crannies of Akwa Ibom, let us all stand behind this rare leader who is akin to a blessing from God during such challenging times. Yes, it is crystal clear that Governor Umo Eno is devoted to serving Akwa Ibom, and serving with integrity, compassion, and unwavering dedication.

Nwawe Cleared of Alleged N22 Million Extortion: Lawyer Refutes Sahara Reporter's False Claims

Posted by Iky Assam Jnr, Lagos

In a recent development concerning the alleged N22 million extortion case, which took place in 2021, human rights lawyer Adebola Odunyemi has strongly rebutted the erroneous claims propagated by Sahara Reporters. Odunyemi emphasized that Cordelia Nwawe, one of the accused police officers, was never implicated in the purported crime.

Sahara Reporters had published a misleading story implicating Officer Nwawe and two other officers in the extortion scandal, which allegedly occurred on the Ikoyi/Ajah Expressway in Lagos.

However, Odunyemi, representing the complainants in the case, clarified that thorough investigations had exonerated Officer Nwawe of any direct involvement in the incident.

He emphasized that the petitions regarding the alleged extortion were withdrawn long ago, and subsequent inquiries revealed Officer Nwawe's innocence.

Addressing the erroneous publication by Sahara Reporters, Odunyemi stressed the importance of accurate reporting, stating, "We urge the general public to disregard whatever publication indicting the officers as we were not contacted by anybody to get the true picture of what transpired before such malicious report was posted."

He further highlighted the need for responsible journalism and urged media outlets to verify facts before disseminating information to the public.

In light of these revelations, it is evident that Officer Nwawe has been wrongly accused, and the matter has been resolved amicably. Odunyemi concluded by encouraging those with grievances against the officers to seek resolution through appropriate channels rather than relying on false narratives.

Politics13 Poor Landlords In Itu Now Homeless After “illegal” Demolition By The Edidems by Assamjnr(op): 8:03am On Feb 18, 2024
The landlords built on our land - AKHA Deputy Speaker replies

Edidem's Family Not Owners of the Land - Chairman, Village Head Rep

No fewer than thirteen (13) landlords in an interior part of Ntak Inyang called Ekpene Ekpe in Itu Local Government Area woke up on the morning of Friday, 16th February 2024, and like any other day, headed to school and their places of business. However, by the evening of that day, they had become homeless, their belongings in the wind as their houses were completely demolished, throwing several families into confusion, mourning, and abject sorrow.

Clutching his daughter and fighting back tears, one of the affected homeowners, Mr. Donald Esin told newsmen, "I want to believe I'm dreaming and I would soon wake up from this bad dream. Just imagine the work I have done for more than 9 years since 2014, and all my life earnings I used in building this house are gone, and I am back to square one. I don't know where to start."

Continuing, he said: “It's very pathetic; people rejoiced with me when I was moving into my own house just months ago; suddenly I'm homeless. This is beyond sad; this is an act of injustice. I bought this land lawfully with the consent of the Village Head and other prominent leaders here, and this place is not under any high tension cable, neither on the government right of way, so I don't know why someone would come and demolish what I laboured for. Again, there was no notice whatsoever; I was called while doing my Business that my house was being brought down by some youths who dressed in black shirts and trousers with cutlasses.

"The people who sold this land to us are as surprised as us at this turn of events. We were told that the people responsible for this heinous act are members of Edidem's family. After they were voted into power, this is the thank you we receive."

Another landlord, NseyenAbasi Esitmbom told newsmen that those who came for the demolition dressed in black with cutlasses while some were completely masked.

Our reporter gathered that residents who were home and came out and threatened to go naked; their houses were spared. Some who gave money to those who did the "illegal" demolition, their houses never got demolished too. Some homeowners were brutalized, and they even threatened to kill them as they tried to question the demolition.

Another homeowner, Isaiah Akpan told newsmen: "They didn't allow us to record the injustice with our phones, nor did they allow us to take anything from our houses. I am completely finished," she said.

Another homeowner, Martha Edet, narrated how she learned of the painful incidence. "I was on my way to work and I was called to come back, that my house was being demolished by over 50 youths who came with a bulldozer, and I took a tricycle and rushed home only to meet my house demolished.

One of the landlords, Columbus Adasi, told reporters that he bought the land as far back as 2013 after carrying out investigations in the Village, and there was no information of his land being in contention with anyone, adding that there was no pending court case, and that their lands were legitimate property, questioning what their offense was that the family of Hon. Kufreabasi Edidem would appear after more than a decade and demolish over 13 houses without any notice.

“There was no court order, no notice served, nothing. Why is one family trying to frustrate us this much in this economy when a bag of cement is now N12,000? I took a loan to build this house, and look at me today, I suffered to buy and build, what did I do to this government?" he asked rhetorically and in tears.

Adasi who could not hold back tears asked the Akwa Ibom state government to come to their aid.

“I am appealing to our dear Governor, who is an ordained man of God, to please set up a committee to investigate this devilish act and please correct this injustice and demand that the people behind this wickedness to cause to pay for this.”

Speaking from his sick bed, one Victor, another resident, said he hasn't regained himself since that day. According to him, he slumped immediately he saw his house completely brought down, and he woke up in a hospital 11 hours later.

Those who sold the land insisted that the land belongs to them and has never been involved in any form of contention, and they sold it legally to the residents, and there were no squatters on the land. They said the land is free from government acquisition, and they had never had any problem with either land grabbers or the government and were very surprised and disturbed at the turn of events.

Our reporter gathered that some of the homeowners have survey plan, the land agreement and the certificate of authority to build there.

The people alleged that they have received information that arrangements are in top gear to remove the debris of the illegal demolition in order to conceal the act. They insisted that the land was not under any known government acquisition, no court judgment was obtained against them, and the demolition was not a result of any levying of execution of court judgment.

Visit To The Village Head of Ntak Inyang:

Our reporter visited the palace of the Village Head of Ntak Inyang, Chief (Elder) Valentine Effiong Odung, who stated unequivocally that the perpetrators of the dastardly act are from Atai Ibiaku Itam.

Eteidung Odung said he was informed that The Edidem family in Atai Ibiaku Itam came to his village to demolish the people's houses.

Asked if he had any pre-notice or information before it was done, the Village Head said he did not.

He regretted that “Some Institutions in the Country don't work anymore; these days anyone can do anything and go scot-free. I'm afraid it can even happen to me by these men who are in power.”

The Village Head, who said that information had that the Edidem’s family came with the Court order to court the houses, said he did not see the Court order.

On the real owners of the land, the Village Head insisted that his forbears never sold any parcel of land outrightly during those years to anybody except by land pledge and wondered why the dastardly act occurred.

Visit to the Ikot Obio Atai Community:

When a team of Newsmen arrived at the Community, they met with Chairman of Ikot Obio Atai Itam Village; Elder Nsikak Etim Edem, who is also acting as the Village Head after the demise of their leader.

Elder Edem told a team of journalists that he was shocked and had pitied the homeowners after hearing the news of the demolish.

“When I asked who was behind the havoc, I was told Rt. Hon. Edidem and his brothers came with a bulldozer with a court order to demolish, that is what I heard."

Reflecting on the history of land ownership in Ekpene Ekpe, the Chairman recounted how his mother explained that in past years, individuals used to contribute their land to cooperatives for planting palm fruits.

He mentioned that during that era, he became aware that Okon Kpeti and Edidem utilized the cooperative land for palm fruit cultivation.

“However, after some time, when the palm fruit business ceased, those who had originally owned their lands and contributed them to the cooperative reclaimed their land and resumed farming, as it rightfully belonged to them,” he explained.

The representative of the Village Head informed reporters that several years ago, he became aware of a legal dispute involving Edidem's family and a person named Michael, who had occupied a small portion of land. After winning the case, only that specific area was awarded to Udo Edidem, not the entire area that they subsequently demolished.

When asked if he was aware that the land where people's houses were demolished belonged to the family of the Itu Assemblyman, he responded: “There's no place where they demolished that they can definitively claim their father owned the land or purchased it. I challenge them to provide evidence that their father owned or acquired the land. If they assert that their father owned the land, they should identify who owns the nearby lands surrounding them.

“One can only acquire land through inheritance, as a gift, or by purchasing it. I urge them to disclose how they obtained the land they proceeded to demolish people's properties on, especially in this challenging economy where a bag of cement costs almost N13,000.”

Hon. Kufreabasi Edidem speaks:

However, in order to provide a balanced perspective, the member representing Itu State Constituency and also serving as the Deputy Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Hon. Kufreabasi Edidem, was contacted via mobile phone. He informed the reporter that among the 21 male children in his family, he is the 20th. Furthermore, he acknowledged that his family indeed demolished the houses following the acquisition of a court order (he did not specify the court's name).

In the exact words of Hon. Edidem: “Over six person (sic) have call (sic)... I'm answering you because I know you, so that if i hear (sic) any misleading publication I know it's from you…because I know what journalists do."

When pressed by the caller to retract his statement implying that journalists engage in blackmail, the lawmaker stood firm in his stance. He later asserted that his family simply adhered to a court order, contending that the individuals had constructed their buildings on land belonging to his family.

But, the Itu lawmaker later said: “If I tell you the truth that I was not even aware that that demolishing is going to be done.”

The UCCDA Chairman speaks:

The Chairman of the Uyo Capital City Development Authority (UCCDA), Hon. Anietie Eka, informed a reporter that the reprehensible action was not conducted by his office.

"I've only just become aware of this information. Our office has not initiated any demolition, and I am not informed about the incident," Eka stated during a phone conversation.

Proper Procedure for Demolition:

Meanwhile, a lecturer in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at a university emphasized that before any demolition takes place in the state, it is essential to serve at least four distinct notices at various times and intervals. These notices comprise a contravention notice, a stop-work notice, a quit notice, and finally, the demolition notice.

He further revealed that a specific deadline for response is mandatory. However, Hon. Edidem did not confirm whether his family members followed these procedures before displacing the impoverished landlords of Ekpene Ekpe and exposing them to the danger of potential snake bites, as one family recounted nearly experiencing.

The foundation stated.

The Foundation said its aim is to reach every mother, father and child and to let them know that sometimes the body cells can malfunction and fail to grow the way they are supposed to, and they cause problems for humans, even children.

"It happens to adults and it happens to children too. Since inception 2 years ago. Akanimo cancer foundation has sponsored 7 children for treatment. 5 presently". The Foundation reported.

CrimeRemains Of A Beheaded Woman Found In Anua, Uyo, Not Ekpri Nsukara Offot- Monarch by Assamjnr(op): 7:47am On Jan 31, 2024

The Village Head of Ekpri Nsukara Offot in Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, Eteidung Emem Denis Asikpo has clarified that the remains of a beheaded woman with missing parts reported few days ago, was found in a neighbouring village and not Ekpri Nsukara Offot.

Eteidung Asikpo made the clarification shortly after a crucial meeting of Ekpri Nsukara Offot Village Council held at his Palace on Tuesday, January 30, 2024.

While debunking the news report which allegedly mentioned Ekpri Nsukara Offot as the scene of the crime, Eteidung Asikpo advised newsmen and social media influencers to always crosscheck and be sure of locations of incidents before going public with their stories.

"It is quite unfortunate that a woman lost her life in the hands of unknown murderers. As was reported, her remains were found without her head and other vital parts of her body. This is heinous and condemnable.

"We are however piqued that most reports on the sad incident mentioned Ekpri Nsukara Offot as where her remains were found. This is not correct. The exact location where her remains were found was the refuse dump by the fence of the Holy Child Convent School, Anua, Uyo, which is a neighbouring community
," he said.

Eteidung Asikpo said refuting the news report has become necessary following numerous calls he and members of Ekpri Nsukara Offot Village Council have received on the sad and pathetic incident.

He acknowledged that the Police and other security agencies have since swung into action to unmask the perpetrators of the heinous crime.

According to him, Ekpri Nsukara Offot Village had since last year, September 2023 set in motion various measures to curb crimes, which include the restriction on the hours of operation of motorcyclists from 9pm to 6am, which is still in force.

"We don't like this reference to Ekpri Nsukara each crime occurs along Nwaniba Road. It tends to portray our community in bad light. We're peace loving and one of most organized villages in the State.

"As a security conscious community, we have initiated several measures to curb crime and restiveness. Part of these, was the introduction and enforcement of restrictions on the hours of operation of motorcyclists in the community from 9pm to 6am since September 2023," he explained.

CultureEdeobom, Afaha Abia, Ikot Obio Asanga - Ikot Ekang Roads Now Death Trap by Assamjnr(op): 6:10pm On Jan 23, 2024
...Village Heads, Residents Cry For Help

The once-functional link road spanning Edeobom, Afaha Abia, Ikot Obio Asanga, Ikot Odiong, and Ikot Ekang in Nsit Ibom and Etinan Local Government Areas, apart from dangerously worsening, is now akin to a death trap, this paper can reliably inform.

This over 5km road, which connects rural agrarian communities in Nsit Ibom to Ikot Ekang in Etinan Local Government Area, according to our reporter, suffer from abandonment and neglect, resulting in severe setbacks for economic and social activities of inhabitants of the area.

To worsen the issue for these rural dwellers, the ancient bridge connecting Ikot Odiong and Ikot Ekang, crossing Nsit Ibom and Etinan Local Government Areas, has become a hazardous obstacle, negatively affecting farming and all economic pursuits between the two Local Government Areas.

When a team of journalists and netizens visited the area on an on-the-spot assessment last Friday, our reporter who was part of the team witnessed the dire condition of these roads, the untold hardship, and excruciating pains it has caused residents and the road users.

Speaking with the Village Head of Afaha Abia, Eteidung Monday Johnny Ekpo, at his palace, the monarch, in an emotion-laden tone, lamented the absence of a reliable access road to the community.

He regretted that the deplorable state of this road not only deprived residents of his community of convenience in commuting from one village to the other especially at critical moments and emergency situations, but also hampers their ability to engage in businesses sustaining their families.

While acknowledging that indigenes of the affected areas have been campaigning, supporting, and voting en masse for the ruling party in the State, PDP, since 1999, the Village Head appealed to the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, whom he referred to as "a caring and listening leader" for compassionate intervention, urging for the construction of the link road to revitalize beleaguered communities in the area.

In the same vein, Eteidung Emmanuel Usoro, the Village Head of Ikot Obio Asanga, during interaction with our reporter at his palace, had expressed deep displeasure at the deteriorating state of the road traversing his village.

The Village Head pointed out that resolving challenges faced by Ikot Obio Asanga and its environs hinges on constructing a viable road in the area. Eteidung Usoro expressed hope that the Governor, being a responsive and altruistic leader, will kindly respond to their plea.

In their separate reactions, indigenes of the affected communities including Mr. Emmanuel Godwin Umoh of Ikot Odiong and Mr. Ubong Etim from Ikot Ekang in Etinan, decried the terrible condition of the colonial bridge connecting the two villages.

They urgently called on the state government to provide them with a good road so as to enable them to resume their businesses and restore normalcy to their daily lives to enable them contribute their quota to the GDP of the state through agro-allied activities.

As a beacon of hope, the residents earnestly called on the Christ-centric administration of Pastor Eno to dispatch trusted government officials to the aforementioned areas for a firsthand assessment of the deplorable state of the road, the bridge and it's commutative effects on the people of the area.

This impassioned plea, according to them, aims at drawing attention to the urgent need for intervention of the State Government in other to alleviate the suffering of the people and restore vitality to their communities that have been totally cut off from civilization.

Those who spoke to newsmen stressed that they are longstanding members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and have been actively contributing to the party's victories in the state since 1999.

They strongly hope that when the matter is brought to the notice of the Governor, he will address their concerns and improve their lives in line with his administration's ARISE agenda.

PoliticsRevenue Crisis: M'enin Council Exonerates Itself From Death Over Tax Collection by Assamjnr(op): 6:58am On Jan 18, 2024
The leadership of Mkpat Enin Local Government Area has distanced itself from the death of tax collector Samuel Monday Toby.

Toby was reportedly attacked in his home for assisting in enforcing the suspension of revenue collection in Ikot Akpaobong market, leading to his demise.

The wife of the deceased, Mrs. Gift Samuel Monday, petitioned the Commissioner of Police, attributing her husband's death to his involvement in the market's revenue collection suspension.

"His assassination is not far-fetched from his December 21, 2023, participation in enforcing the Ikot Akpaobong Market revenue collection suspension directive of the Mkpat Enin Local Government Council, having been appointed to aid in its implementation," she said.

Reacting to the death, Secretary of the Transition Committee, Mkpat Enin LGA, Pastor Amos Afia, stated that December 2023 was declared a tax-free month for traders, leading to the dissolution of the revenue collection committee.

In a release provided to our correspondent in Uyo, the State Capital, Afia explained that some youths, led by Akanimo Bob Ikpe, a Personal Assistant to Governor Umo Eno, and Village Head of Ikot Akpaobong Village, Eteidung Aniefiok Cyril Udom, defied the order by selling unauthorized tickets in Akpaudo and Ukam markets.

He revealed that the council officially informed Eteidung Udom about the tax-free excise in all the village markets. Additionally, members of the newly constituted Markets/Motor Parks Committee were introduced to the Commissioner of Police as authorized persons to collect revenue from January 1, 2024.

Afia clarified that the local government council never engaged the services of Akanimo Bob Ikpe as a revenue officer but employed Samruf Technical Services Limited, whose contract concluded in December 2023. He noted that any claim by Akanimo Bob Ikpe was illegal.

"On December 11, 2023, after due consultation with the Transition Committee, the Local Government Council's leadership, through a press release signed by Pastor Afia Amos, declared December 2023 a tax-free month for traders in Mkpat Enin.

"We also announced the dissolution of all standing committees, including the revenue collection committee.

"Despite the release and announcements on radio and social media for the smooth implementation of the tax-free exercise, some youths, led by Akanimo Bob Ikpe and Eteidung Aniefiok Cyril Udom, flouted the order by forcefully selling unauthorized tickets to traders in Akpaudo and Ukam markets.

"On December 20, 2023, Eteidung Aniefiok Cyril Udom, the village head of Ikot Akpaobong, was officially written to, introducing the enforcement team on the tax-free excise in all village markets. Additionally, on December 29, 2023, the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, received a letter introducing members of the newly constituted Markets/Motor Parks Committee as authorized persons for revenue collection from January 1, 2024.

"On December 22, 2023, an unfortunate report emerged that an indigene of Mkpat Enin named Samuel Monday Toby was attacked at his home for assisting in enforcing the revenue collection suspension in Ikot Akpaobong Market.

"From all the records available in the Local Government Council, there is no evidence indicating that the council engaged the services of Akanimo Bob Ikpe as a revenue officer.

"Rather, the council employed Samruf Technical Services Limited for the revenue business, and details of the engagement show that the contract ended in December 2023. Therefore, Akanimo Bob Ikpe's claim to be a revenue collection officer in the Local Government is illegitimate.

"Finally, the Transition Committee is working closely with the Nigeria Police and all relevant security agencies to ensure that all culprits in the current crisis are brought to book. We are fully committed to restoring and ensuring lasting peace in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area," the release stated.

DEAN OF SUPERVISORS IN MKPAT ENIN EXONERATES COUNCIL BOSS AMIDST ALLEGATIONS

...Reveals Akanimo Bob on Police Wanted List For Alleged Crimes

...Wife of slain youth writes Commissioner of Police, names suspects

LESS than 24 hours after Akanimo Bob, Personal Assistant II to the Governor from Mkpat Enin, stirred controversy with an open letter accusing the council boss of fomenting crisis in the area, the Dean of Supervisors, Barr. Daniel Hilary, has swiftly responded.

In an official statement issued today, the law luminary vehemently debunked all allegations made by Akanimo, asserting that the Governor's aide is currently on the police wanted list for the many crimes he allegedly committed and wanton destruction of property in Mkpat Enin.

The press release further revealed that Akanimo Bob, despite claiming authorship of the letter, is deemed unlikely to possess the eloquence displayed in the document, suggesting the involvement of mischief makers using him as a proxy.

The statement read: "I have clinically read the above titled letter, and I am compelled to rejoin as such given the false, distorted and malicious content of the same.

"Sincerely, I choose to rejoin the said letter just to put the Governor and Mkpat Enin public in a proper perspective.

"Firstly, my strong conviction is that the said Akanimo Bob is not the author of that letter given the elegant wordings therein. Mr Akanimo Bob I know is not lettered as such and can't even in the widest dreams of ghosts author such piece. The said letter from my findings emanated from mischief makers using Akanimo Bob as proxy.

"Secondly, Akanimo Bob being a PA to the Governor ought to always uphold, preserve and present truth at all times to the Governor than trying to misinform the Governor, and Mkpat Enin people at large.

"Thirdly, Mr. Akanimo Bob had threatened before me on the 7/12/2023 to mobilize his group and unleash conflicts in Ukam market if he is not allowed to continue as revenue agent by the council. The decision of the Council to desolved all standing committees of the local government on December 2023 and giving tax holidays to the traders during that December, did not go down well with Akanimo Bob.

"Angered by the present new revenue arrangement for the market put in place by the council which did not return Akanimo Bob as revenue agent, has chosen to go his evil ways but for swift stiff resistance by the security operatives in and around the market at the instance of the pragmatic chairman, Lady Mercy Bassey served the market from being invaded by Akanimo Bob and his group.

"I hope that Akanimo Bob will submit himself to investigation on his letter and to police Officers whom Akanimo Bob had been on their wanted list over crimes and atrocities he committed in Ukam community in recent times. Of course the Police officers will be activated to revisit those crime records in order to bring Akanimo to justice.

"Fourthly, it is a blatant falsehood to say that the Transition Chairman, Lady Mercy Bassey is victimising Ikpa Ibom Ward 2 for political reason, given that the said letter does not disclose any material fact in support of such claim. However, it is the turn of Ikpa Ibom clan under the zoning arrangement of Mkpat Enin LGA to produce executive chairman during the coming local government election.

"To set the record straight here, zoning arrangement for the position of chairmanship in Mkpat Enin LGA has always been on clans basis and not on wards basis. Therefore any eligible Ikpa Ibom son and daughter from any of the four wards of Ikpa Ibom clan is qualified to contest when the time comes. Issue of zoning on ward basis as canvassed in that letter is baseless. Therefore to import such narrative into the said letter has exposed the desperation of those behind the ugly letter.

"Frankly, Mkpat Enin people are very much aware that the authors of the said letter are on a sponsored venture to malign the image of the Transition Chairman, Lady Mercy Bassey for selfish political agenda.

"Lastly, I write to inform His Excellency and Mkpat Enin people that the said letter is a fabricated lies calculated to bring the image of the Lady Mercy Bassey into disrepute. The said letter should not be given any probative value in its entirety.

"The Transition Chairman Lady Mercy Bassey is very focused and committed to giving good and purposeful leadership to the people of Mkpat Enin. We as members and supervisors of the Transition committee are solidly in support of the chairman, which of course is working on our collective decision to foster peace and development in Mkpat Enin.

"On the final note, Mkpat Enin transition committee under the headship of Lady Mercy Bassey will not succumb to any campaign of calumny and blackmail, but will rather remain focused and committed to providing leadership in Mkpat Enin LGA in line with the ARISE agenda of His Excellency Pastor Umo Eno, the governor of Akwa Ibom state."

Meanwhile, Mrs Gift Samuel Monday, the wife of late Samuel Monday Toby, who was killed in December 2023 by hooligans allegedly working in collaboration with Akanimo, has written a petition to the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police.

In the petition dated 29th December, 2023, Mrs Monday revealed that her husband was killed by amed men, suspected to have been sponsored and instructed by the village head of Ikot Akpaobong, Eteidung Aniefiok Cyril Udom.

She further revealed the names of the suspects who allegedly killed her husband as follows; Emmanuel Sunday Asuquo; Ubong Michael Elijah; Samuel Sunday Asuquo; Ndifreke Tomorrow; Etebom Cyril Udom; Obong Cyril Udom, Christian Idara Cyril, who are all indigenes of Ikot Akpaobong village.

"That his assassination is not far-fetched from his 21st December, 2023, involvement in the enforcement of the Ikot Akpaobong Market revenue collection suspension directive of the Mkpat Enin Local Government Council, having been appointed to aide in the implementation of the directive.

"That arising from such enforcement participation, the above mentioned persons amongst others upon being armed, stormed our family compound on the 22nd of December, 2023 at about 2:00am, demanded that we open the door; and when asked by my husband who they are, they unanimously said that "they are men of the Nigerian Police Force".

"While we refused to open the door, they broke same, entered and dragged my husband out of the house, there at he was stabbed at the armpit and shot at the chest to death; after which the culprits ran away, all efforts to intimidate fellow community people to come to our rescue was to no avail," she narrated.

In another reaction, a press release by the Secretary of the Transition Committee, Pastor Amos Afia, has revealed that Akanimo Bob Ikpe in collaboration with Eteidung Aniefiok Cyril Udom, the village head of Ikot Akpaobong Village, flouted the Local Government directive on suspension of revenue collection in December 2023, by forcefully selling unauthorized tickets to traders in Akpaudo and Ukam markets.

The release further revealed that the claim by Akanimo that he was a revenue collection officer amounted to illegality as records in the Council showed that at no time was Akanimo contracted by the Local Government for collection of revenue.

"From all the records available in the Local Government Council, there is no record that indicates that the Local Government Council at any point engaged the services of Akanimo Bob Ikpe as a revenue officer. Rather, the Council engaged a certain Samruf Technical Services Limited for the revenue business and details of the engagement shows that the contract elapsed in December 2023. Therefore, the claim by Akanimo Bob Ikpe that he was a revenue collection officer in the Local Government amounts to illegality," the release stated.

The release assured that the Transition Committee was working closely with the Nigeria Police and all relevant security agencies to ensure that all relevant security agencies to ensure that all culprits in the current crisis are brought to book, adding that the Committee was committed to restoring and ensuring lasting peace in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.

PoliticsEteidung Asikpo Hails Gov. Eno On Supreme Court’s Affirmation Of Victory by Assamjnr(op): 3:20pm On Jan 15, 2024
…Says It Validates Mandate Given By A’Ibom Electorate

The village head of Ekpri Nsukara Offot in the Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Eteidung Emem Denis Asikpo, has hailed Pastor Umo Eno on the affirmation of his victory by the Supreme Court.

Eteidung Asikpo asserts that the sequence of victories from the gubernatorial polls of March 18, 2023, to the Election Petition Tribunal, the Appeal Court, and finally at the Supreme Court on Thursday, January 11, 2024, have proven that Pastor Eno was divinely chosen to govern Akwa Ibom State.

The village head, while describing the Supreme Court’s verdict as just and fair as well as a victory for all Akwa Ibomites, urged all opposition candidates to accept the outcome in good faith and to respect the mandate overwhelmingly given to Governor Eno by the electorate in the state.

He said that the news of the Supreme Court judgement was received with jubilation by indigenes and residents of Ekpri Nsukara Offot, a thickly populated community along Nwaniba Road and a co-host of the Federal Government-owned University of Uyo (UNIUYO) permanent site.

The royal father pledged the continued cooperation of his community to the Governor Eno-led administration to enable him to fully realise the implementation of his lofty ARISE Agenda Programme for the State.

He commended the governor for his numerous people’s-oriented achievements so far in office, such as payment of pension and gratuity, road works at Akpan Andem Market, Atiku Abubakar Flood Control and erosion works in Ewet Offot, and other numerous projects in education, health, agriculture, and housing.

Eteidung Asikpo noted with applause Governor Eno’s inclusive approach to governance and administering the state beyond partisan lines by relating well with President Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and others.

He said, “We are very happy that the Supreme Court has given a just and fair verdict in line with the outcome of the March 18, 2023, gubernatorial election in Akwa Ibom State. Opposition candidates should give peace a chance and accept the verdict in good faith.

“It is very clear that Pastor Umo Bassey Eno was divinely chosen to govern Akwa Ibom State. You can see this from the sequence of victories from the gubernatorial polls of March 18, 2023, the Election Petition Tribunal, the Appeal Court, and now the Supreme Court delivered on Thursday, January 11, 2024. As it is often said in Latin, Vox populi, Vox dei (the voice of the people is the voice of God).

“Now that the battle is over, let all hands be on deck now through support, solidarity, and prayers for the general good of Akwa Ibom State. We are lucky to have a governor like Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, who is godly and has the interests of the people and the state at heart. Right from when he was chosen as the flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and presented to the Akwa Ibom people, it was obvious that he was the rightful choice, and today that has been confirmed.

“Indigenes of my community and residents alike will continue to give our total cooperation to the Governor Umo Bassey Eno-led administration so that he can effectively implement the ARISE Agenda programme and bring dividends of democracy to the people,” he stated.

"Every component of the ARISE Agenda has been kicked off, and its impact is being felt across the state. All that is needed now is to ensure total support, solidarity, and prayers for the success of our dear governor and his good plans for the state."

He also used the opportunity to wish a happy New Year to indigenes and residents of his community and appreciated them for their cooperation with his leadership since his ascension as the village head, assuring them of his unwavering commitment to administer the village well at all times.

EducationEmir Of Kontagora Visits Oku Ibom Ibibio, Seeks Collaboration For FUTIA by Assamjnr(op): 8:46am On Dec 04, 2023

The Emir of Kontagora, Niger State and pioneer Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi (FUTIA) in Akwa Ibom State, Alhaji Muhammad Bara'u Mu'azu II has called on Oku Ibom Ibibio and President General of Akwa Ibom State Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers, His Eminence, Ntenyin (Dr.) Solomon Daniel Etuk, CFR to offer the institution his support and royal backing to enable its rapid growth.

The Emir, who made the call when he paid homage to the Oku Ibom Ibibio at his palace in Ikot Ukobo in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area on Friday, said the appeal was necessitated by the fact that traditional rulers have a tremendous role to play for the success of any institution within their domains and State.

The 7th Emir of Kontagora was accompanied on the visit by the Vice Chancellor of FUTIA. Prof Leo Daniel and the management team and council members thanked the Oku Ibom Ibibio for the warm hospitality accorded him despite the short notice of his visit.

He said, “Your Eminence, as it is customary, whenever a King comes into a town where there is a ruler there, he has to go there first before doing anything else. When I stepped into Akwa Ibom State, I asked them, because this was my first time coming to Akwa Ibom, but very unfortunately, time was against it, so we decided to make it today.

“We are all here to pay homage to this great palace and also to seek your advice and your support to move the Federal University of Technology to a greater height. You know as I do that without traditional rulers, it will be difficult to attain any desirable success for the school.

Responding, the patriarch of the Ibibios worldwide, Ntenyin (Dr.) Solomon Daniel Etuk, CFR, expressed appreciation to the Emir for the royal visit and assured him of cooperation.

He reiterated the role of traditional fathers in growing love and unity in the country among the various peoples and states so that the desired development can be achieved.

He said cooperation and understanding backed with love and unity will diffuse tensions and disaffection thereby infusing a sense of togetherness among Nigerians irrespective of origin.

Ntenyin Etuk, who congratulated the Emir for his installation as the pioneer Chancellor of FUTIA and successful matriculation of the first batch of students, assured him of the necessary support required to enable the university to grow.

“I truly appreciate your coming to this part of the world. In the traditional institution where you and I belong, that is the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, Abuja, we believe in building bridges, we build bridges of love, togetherness, and unity of purpose in Nigeria – believing very strongly that you are my brother from another mother, we see ourselves as brothers not somebody from South or somebody from the North. We see ourselves as one.

“We believe very strongly that we can only grow Nigeria desirably with love and unity. My Emir, Akwa Ibom State is a very peaceful State; we are peaceful in all sense of the word.

“What I can assure you is that we will give the university all that it requires to enable it to grow. The university must grow to develop our children. It behoves us royal fathers to create a peaceful atmosphere for the children to study and we will do that through building stronger synergy between the school authority the traditional institution and all the people of Akwa Ibom State.

According to the Oku Ibom Ibibio, the Emir’s visit has set the tone for closer working relations between the Kontagora Emirate, Niger State and Akwa Ibom for the good of the people of both states.

... Back Oku Ibom Ibibio As Supreme Leader of TRC

Posted by Ubong ASSAM Jnr.

Leaders and Stakeholders of the Ekid community, comprising Eket and Esit Eket Local Government Areas in Akwa Ibom State have risen in one accord to publicly affirm that they belong wholly to the Ibibio which is the fourth largest tribe in Nigeria.

The proclamation was made during a solidarity visit to the Oku Ibom Ibibio and President General of Akwa Ibom State Supreme Council of Traditional, His Eminence, Ntenyin (Dr.) Solomon Daniel Etuk at his Palace in Ikot Ukobo, Nsit Ubium Local Government Area on Friday, December 1, 2023.

The leadership, comprising all segments of leaders and Stakeholders of the Ekid Peoples, marked a significant milestone in putting the records straight on the long-standing debate surrounding the Ekid people's lineage to the Ibibio fold.

The President General of Ekid Peoples Union (EPU), Dr. Samuel Udonsak, in his opening speech, said they fully endorse the Traditional Rulers Law cap 155 of 2022 and the appointment of Ntenyin Solomon Daniel Etuk as the President General of Akwa Ibom State Supreme Council of Traditional.

He said, “We as Ekid People, a sub-group of the Ibibio race have come in solidarity visit to our supreme monarch. The Traditional Rulers Law is ethical, morally just, and consistent with the status of the Ibibio race as the majority in Akwa Ibom State. We applaud and stand by this law.

“The good people of Akwa Ibom State, as represented by the State House of Assembly, passed the Law and with the assent of His Excellency, the Governor, Akwa Ibom people have spoken. There is no going back.

“With this noble action, we have elevated the stool of the Oku Ibom to be at par with what obtains in other states. This is therefore worthy of commendation.
We congratulate the Oku Ibom Ibibio and pray for His Eminence's peaceful reign.”

The leader of the delegation and the political leader of Eket Senatorial District, Chief Nduese Essien, who further affirmed the decision that Ekid people are Ibibios, commended Ntenyin Etuk for working assiduously to ensure that the Ibibio groupings come together in love and unity for the progress of the State.

Chief Essien reiterated the historical integration of Ekid within the Ibibio fold, citing colonial historians who substantiated the connection. He also shed light on past challenges faced by the Ibibios, urging a comprehensive approach to address lingering issues.

"We have noted the unanimity you have attained so far, the unity of purpose and the determination to protect the heritage of Ibibio Nation. We are indeed encouraged. Ekid people have always been a sub-tribe of the Ibibio nation. Several colonial historians have attested to this. We were indeed active participants in Ibibio State Union and benefited from its overseas training programmes," Chief Essien stated.

The former Federal Minister recalled an incident during the 2014 National Conference when he uncovered a scheme by some individuals who wanted to have a new state (Oil Rivers State) carved out from Akwa Ibom.

According to him, the plan was to annex the entire coastal areas of Akwa Ibom, which historically, belongs to Ibibio, without seeking consent and he promptly informed the former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong Victor Attah, who led the state delegation, and together they mobilized efforts to thwart the unholy move.

In his address, the Paramount Ruler of Eket, HRM Edidem E.C.D. Abia affirmed that Eket and the entire Akwa Ibom State are inherently Ibibio, despite dialectical variations.

While affirming that "Eket and the entire Akwa Ibom State is Ibibio land," he denounced those attempting to undermine the Ibibio heritage. “We are here to reassure Oku Ibom Ibibio and other leaders of the Ibibio nation that we are one, the royal father added.

The Executive Chairman of Esit Eket and Chairman of ALGON, Hon. Iniobong Robson, who moved a vote of thanks, praised God for giving the Ibibio a good leader.

He commended Oku Ibom for his commitment to the Ibibio cause and for being so patriotic to work for the interests of the people.

He clarified that the purpose of the visit was to register our support and solidarity with the President General of the Supreme Council of Akwa Ibom State Traditional Rulers and the Supreme Monarch of the Ibibio Race.

In his response, the President General of the Supreme Council of Akwa Ibom State Traditional Rulers and Oku Ibom Ibibio, Ntenyin (Dr.) Solomon Etuk expressed gratitude to the Ekid people for the solidarity visit.

The premier royal father acknowledged that Ekid is Ibibio and reiterated that leaders of Ekid have been participating actively in Ibibio activities and meetings.
While reassuring Ekid people of his continued commitment towards the unity of the Ibibio race and the people of the entire State, Ntenyin Etuk pledged to work towards realizing the common interest of all.

He called for all hands to be on deck in supporting the government of the day so that Akwa Ibom State can continue to make worthwhile progress in all ramifications.

In the delegation of Ekid peoples was the Chairman of the Board of Trustee Ekid People's Union, Rt. Hon. Chief Nduese Essien, the President General, Ekid People's Union, Dr Samuel Udonsak, ALGON Chairman & Executive Chairman Esit-Eket Local Government, Rt. Hon. Ita Umo Udo, Chief Assam Usoro and Wife, Obongiwaad Emmanuel Mbong, Elder, Eddy Etangnkanga, Pastor Ubong Okposin, Barr. Manfred Ekpe etc.

A'Ibom Progress, Unity Very Sacrosanct - Says Oku Ibom As Etinan Leaders Pay Homage

Oku Ibom Ibibio and President General, Akwa Ibom State Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers, His Eminence, Ntenyin (Dr.) Solomon Daniel Etuk, CFR has enjoined all Akwa Ibom people to collectively pursue and promote ideals and motives that would engender love, unity and progress in the State.

Ntenyin Etuk stated this at his Palace in Ikot Ukobo, Nsit Ubium Local Government Area when the leaders and stakeholders of Etinan Local Government Area paid homage to him on Friday.

The premier royal father said the prevalence of the bond of togetherness in Akwa Ibom will help propel the State to higher heights and cement its place in the comity of states in Nigeria and beyond.

He maintained that as supreme head of the traditional institution in Akwa Ibom, he keeps advocating for a united and sincere approach to issues concerning the State.

"We should be committed to making the traditional institution look more attractive. People now covet it, so let's make it more dignified. I've been picked by the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria to visit Libya on a peace mission to reconcile warring factions. With such development, Akwa Ibom is being recognized and promoted. So let's support it," he said.

Thanking the delegation drawn from the traditional institution, political class, academia, public service and entrepreneurs, for the display of solidarity, the Oku Ibom Ibibio said the state's traditional institution has always enjoyed a good rapport with Etinan leaders and people.

He admitted that the visit has encouraged and strengthened him and also sued for support for traditional rulers at all levels.

He equally drummed support for the administration of Governor Umo Bassey Eno, saying no administration can succeed without the support of the governed.

Speaking earlier, the leader of the Etinan delegation, Dr. Okon Emah, who is the chairman, Etinan Council of Elders, congratulated the supreme king on his affirmation as life president-general of Akwa Ibom State Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers.

Dr Emah thanked God for making a good son of Etinan Federal Constituency the Governor of Akwa Ibom State and also thanked God for the wisdom given to former governor Mr Udom Emmanuel for the thought of the creation of President General which brought Akwa Ibom State Traditional Council into the politics of traditional rulers in Nigeria.

“Today it is not only the Obong of Calabar that is given recognition and invitation to some national meetings but we also have our own Oku Ibom Ibibio making Akwa Ibom State one of the States with a first-class traditional ruler.

"Let us live in peace with each other, giving respect where it should be given. Please let us avoid squabbles but focus on the good developments which His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno is bringing to Akwa Ibom State," he added.

In his speech, the Executive Chairman of Etinan, Hon Cletus Ekpo, assured the Oku Ibom Ibibio of the support of his people.

Member representing Etinan State Constituency, Hon Uduak Ekpo-Ufot, equally gave a nod of approval to the throne. He said he felt fulfilled to have been part of the legislation that birthed the amendment of the TRC Law.

The Paramount Ruler of Etinan, HRM Edidem Aniefiok Monday Akpanobong also pledged utmost solidarity to the State and the Akwa Ibom State Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers.

Other speakers, including Isantim Kenneth Okon, Otuekong Sunny Jackson, Dr Asikpo Essien-Ibok and Barr Ime Essien-Udom all thumbed the state governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for giving a seal of approval for the upgrade of the traditional institution. They equally congratulated the Oku Ibom Ibibio.

Otuekong Jackson noted that the task of achieving heightened unity and progress remains a daunting but achievable one. He called on all hands to be on deck for the dream to come to fruition.

He appreciated the Oku Ibom Ibibio for accepting to lead the traditional institution as life president.

Other Paramount Rulers at the ceremony were HRM Edidem Edet Akpan Inyang, Itu LGA; HRM Edidem (Elder) Akpan Akpan Ekpene, Mkpat Enin LGA; HRM Edidem Sylvanus Effiong Okon, Uyo LGA; HRM Edidem Etim Charles Daniel Abia, Eket LGA; HRM Edidem Peter Okon Effiong, Nsit Atai LGA; HRM Edidem Cosmas Bassey Nkanga, Uruan LGA; HRM Edidem Etim N. The event featured a presentation of gift items to the Oku Ibom Ibibio and cultural displays also ensued.

CultureUsenobong Akpabio's Banal Reasoning On TRC Law by Assamjnr(op): 8:20am On Nov 27, 2023
Posted by Ubong ASSAM Jnr.

Quite recently, the defeated Senatorial candidate for Akwa Ibom North East (Uyo) District, Rt. Hon. Barr. Usenobong Akpabio laboured unsuccessfully to disprove the Amended TRC Law, cap 155 of 2022 in Akwa Ibom State.

The piece titled "The Weakening of Traditional Institutions with Legislation: A critical look at the Amended TRC Law in Akwa Ibom State" to say the least was completely infantile

The more one reads Barr Usenobong Akpabio's submission on the Amended Akwa Ibom State Traditional Rulers Law, the more any lingering doubt about its banality is cleared.

I paused twice, while reading the piece, to check and recheck if my eyes were actually playing tricks on me. I had to be doubly sure of the byline attached to the piece. When someone has earned some level of reverence, especially one who doesn't spew not-well-chewed statements, a sudden digression becomes questionable. I can't afford to look the other way when the dance steps of a masquerade are not in synchrony with the drumming.

Well, without sounding entirely dismissive, Rt Hon Barr Usenobong Akpabio - a Lawyer, former House of Assembly member and politician - actually penned a beautiful prose. But the glossy piece was garnished with defective logic. Such could pass for a poorly researched high school essay written by a student with a good command of the English Language.

What should have been a well-tempered communication became a flawed, mendacious, vitriolic, contradictory and undignified piece.

Embedded in the copious paragraphs of his piece were just three points: his self- contradiction, his limited knowledge of the traditional institution and his misguided attack on the House of Assembly.

In what amounted to a clear case of self-contradiction, Usenobong Akpabio glaringly shot himself in the foot by eating his words.

On May 6, 2022, Usenobong, whilst aspiring to represent Akwa Ibom North East Senatorial District in the Senate, led members of his campaign organization to the Ikot Ukobo, the Palace of His Eminence, Ntenyin (Dr.) Solomon Daniel Etuk, CFR, in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area, seeking royal blessings from the premier monarch and the Ifim Ibom Ibibio.

Usenobong referred to the paramount rulers as his fathers, promising that as a "good son" he would cater for their welfare as well as seek guidance and advice from them if he gets to the Red Chambers as an elected Senator.

He then made a suggestion: "If fathers of faith in churches have woken up to begin to play politics, why should our traditional rulers not know who they want to send to represent the people? They should also be involved in the making process of the representative. Traditional rulers should be involved at a time like this."

Fast-forward to November, 2023, where Usenobong, via his article, dropped an opposite advice. Hear him: "With the body of Christ now unconscionably throwing her hat into the ring of political arena, the only institution that should be spared the vulnerability and unpredictability of politics and political manoeuvering - one to help maintain the sanctity, identity and integrity of our ancestry and also help shape and direct our society - is the traditional institution."

Two contradictory advices by Usenobong within a skimpy space of time. Quite ludicrous!

A "good son" - as he chose to describe himself in 2022 - would never hold his parents hands and lead them on a pathway, only to turn around halfway to castigate them for traversing the pathway with him.

What if the traditional rulers had heeded his call for them to become partisan?
Of course, the Oku Ibom Ibibio and his Supreme TRC members, in their wisdom, never accepted to follow the path shown by Usenobong Akpabio in May 2022. Today, they have been vindicated.

In a display of presumed humility and respect, he had knelt before the throne of his forebears at Ikot Ukobo, speaking the language of persuasion and reverence.

Today, I wouldn't say that he is suffering from Post-Election Depression; even if that is his situation, transferring the aggression on traditional rulers is totally weird, because they have no hand in his predicament.

Usenobong proceeded to weave several paragraphs on how "legislation weakens the traditional institution." By this, he, as a lawyer and former legislator, deliberately betrayed his "clan." I dare say that he knew what he churned out was being false.

For the sake of disabusing minds that have been confused, I make bold to say that every traditional stool in the country is a product of legislation. A body of laws enacted by the Houses of Assembly and endorsed by State Governors is what grants legality and authority to the traditional stools in the respective states. Villages, Clans, Local Government Areas and the traditional rulers therein are products of legislation (law). A village can only be recognized if it is gazetted. It flows that way.

Courtesy of the Amended TRC Law, Akwa Ibom has simply joined a list of States of the Federation (including FCT) that have permanent representatives in the National Traditional Rulers Council.
The States include Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Edo, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna. Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and FCT -Abuja.

In Abuja, where Usenobong expected to reside as an elected Senator, the Ona of Abaji is the life president of the FCT traditional rulers council. It does not mean that other traditional entities and rulers in Abuja are inferior to the Ona and Abaji.

The traditional institution in Akwa Ibom State has not even experienced half of the negative political intrigues if compared to places like Kano where a Governor deposed and banished a sitting Emir. Or do I recall that Ibrahim Dasuki, the 18th Sultan of Sokoto was deposed in 1996 during the military government of Sani Abacha? In our nearby Cross River State, we have seen how the powers that-be battled a particular traditional throne for supremacy. Not too long ago, a Rivers State Governor infamously vowed to jail, seize the crown or depose paramount rulers that offends the law.
Yet, Usenobong, in his piece, used those climes as a stick to beat the Akwa Ibom State Traditional Institution.

Also, inferring that the Oku Ibom stool and the traditional rulers in Akwa Ibom are political appointees, not monarchs, is patently false.
Chiefs in Akwa Ibom are always chosen from the ruling families in communities.
For instance, His Eminence, Ntenyin (Dr.) Solomon Daniel Etuk is from the loins of royalty. He inherited the village headship of Ikot Ukobo from his late father.
His late paternal uncle, the late Edidem Robert Obot, was a Paramount Ruler. This process is in tune with what is practiced elsewhere.

Usenobong was not done; he also aimed his attack nozzle at the House of Assembly, castigating its members, and referring them as those who have limited knowledge of legislation. But he failed to pinpoint the law flouted by those legislators. Those lawmakers simply authenticated a bill that emanated from the traditional rulers. Simple!

He sounded so inept and pedestrian. He failed in the attempt to present himself as a champion or ambassador of statehood. A closer analysis seem to expose him as a bedfellow of conceited egocentrics and tin-gods who are stunned by the unexpected resurgence of the all-encompassing Akwa Ibom (Old Ibibio).

The waning clique believes the solution to their self-inflicted misfortune is to hijack the traditional institution, create division among a people that belonged to one large umbrella, and perpetrate their insatiable lust for prominence and cornering of our commonwealth. For many reasons, Usenobong shouldn't befriend them.

The oligarchs are facing the nightmare of watching their anti-Akwa Ibom antics go into oblivion. A false hope arose via this subject matter of traditional law amendment but it is fast waning.

The few paramount rulers said to have been influenced by tribal tigers, have now withdrawn their case against the state government and the Akwa Ibom State Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers from Court.

The sands of the war mongers are fast sinking. Their mission has paled into a dying dream. Usenobong Akpabio is joining the fray very late. He can't revive a dead horse. Everything seems done and dusted.

Every writer has a bad day - maybe we should assume that his piece was penned on his wrong day. He must have passed through serious pains trying to build those flawed paragraphs.

A writer puts himself on trial in the court of public perception everytime he or she churns out an opinion. Usenobong Akpabio has literally convicted himself. But I think, he should be pardoned. To err is human. Let's not throw away the baby with the bath water.

But he has to retrace his steps. A child who delights when told by strangers that he is more reasonable than his fathers, usually realizes late that such was a spite by enemies, not a compliment.

PoliticsEtim Ekpo Council Boss Rejoices With Pst. Eno Over Appeal Court Victory by Assamjnr(op): 3:56pm On Nov 25, 2023
... Advises Opposition Parties

Posted by Seun Abimbola, Lagos.

As Akwa Ibom people at home and abroad continue to celebrate yesterday's Appeal Court victory of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, the Executive Chairman of Etim Ekpo Local Government Council, Hon. Imeh Afia, has congratulated the State Chief Executive.

The Council boss however enjoined opposition parties in the State to cease any further legal battles and lend their support to the Governor's vision for the State as encapsulated in his ARISE Agenda.

Recall that, Appellate Court sitting in Lagos on Friday dismissed the appeal filed by Senator Bassey Albert Akpan and his party, Young Progressives Party, Obong Akanimo Udofia of the All Progressives Congress, APC and Senator John Akpanudoedehe of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, challenging the election of Governor Umo Eno of the Peoples Democratic Party.

At separate judgements delivered at the Nation's Commercial hub, the Court of Appeal struck out the respective appeals by the three appellants, describing them as lacking in merits.

The Court faulted the abuse of judicial process by the Appellants in re-litigating a matter that was dispensed at the High Court, Appeal Court and Supreme Court in favour of the 2nd respondent; Pastor Umo Bassey Eno.

Reacting to the cheering news on Saturday, the Etim Ekpo Chairman, said the outcome of the Appeal Court ruling was a further affirmation of the ruling of the tribunal which had earlier declared Pastor Eno as duly elected by majority of lawful votes cast at the election.

He opined that the jubilation in all the nooks and crannies of the state was a testament to the popularity and acceptability of the PDP and Governor Umo Eno by majority of Akwa Ibomites.

Hon. Afia urged the opposition candidates to sheathe their sword and allow the outcome of the judgment as the wish of majority of Akwa Ibom people.

His words: “On behalf of my family, the Council and the good people of Etim Ekpo Local Government, I use this auspicious moment to congratulate our principal and amiable Governor of Akwa Ibom State and our great party the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on yesterday's multiple victories at the Appeal Court in Lagos.

“Indeed, the judgement of their lordships is an affirmation of the ruling of the tribunal and also a true reflection of the wishes of majority of Akwa Ibomites who voted massively for Pastor Umo Bassey Eno and PDP in the March 18 gubernatorial election in the state.

"While I thank the judiciary for yet again doing justice on the matter, I call on the opposition candidates to sheath their sword and see the judgement as a true reflection of the wishes of Akwa Ibom sons and daughters

"Therefore, with the affirmation of the Governor's victory by the Appellate Court, I call on all opposition parties to put aside any remaining differences and join forces with Governor Umo Eno in pursuing the ARISE Agenda.

"After dissecting this agenda, I can state unequivocally that the ARISE Agenda is not only for the benefit of the current administration, but for the future of Akwa Ibom State and its people. So, I encourage them and indeed, all sons and daughters of Akwa Ibom to rally behind the Governor and work together to create a brighter future for our State," Hon. Afia submitted.

The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, has expressed its gratitude and admiration for Governor Umo Eno's compassionate leadership and generosity in approving the 13th Month Salary bonus, fittingly dubbed "Eno-mber" for civil servants.

In addition to this remarkable gesture, the Governor is also making progress on paying outstanding pension and gratuity arrears owed to retirees, which is seen as a great sign of respect and concern for the well-being of the people of Akwa Ibom.
