SportsAdesanya, Chukwueze, Maja And The Headliner Sportsmen From The Weekend by Azeemokoya(op): 7:02pm On Apr 10, 2023
Nigeria is blessed with a lot of talented sportspersons home and abroad. From boxing to football and athletics, the West African nation is never found wanting of sports stars.

Over the weekend, NRTC monitored some sports personalities who impressed and put smiles on our faces. In no particular order, this piece takes a look at some of these darlings.

Israel Adesanya
Israel Adesanya reclaimed the UFC middleweight title from Alex Pereira in the main event of UFC 287 on Sunday.

The Nigerian-NewZealander claimed the victory against Pereira at the FTX Arena in Miami, Florida.

The knockout was a shocking and instant one as Pereira was initially on the offensive. Perreira was releasing some body hooks and a knee to the ribs before Israel Adesanya, the challenger, threw a right hook out of nowhere.

Catching the Brazilian Mixed Martial Artist unawares, Pereira froze as ‘The Last Stylebender’ landed another hook to knock out the holder. He was left out cold after the fist.

Although based in New Zealand, Adesanya has not been ashamed to always identify with his Nigerian roots. His resilience and never-say-die attitude has been a source of inspiration to many youths back home.

Chuba Akpom
One of the most precious football talents in Europe, Akpom once again demonstrated why he’s the Championship top scorer this season.

He scored from the spot for Middlesbrough on Friday against the now promoted Burnley for his 26th goal of the league season.

Business5 Kinds Of Business You Can Venture In As A University Student by Azeemokoya(op): 6:21am On Apr 09, 2023
If you have been wondering how to get extra income as students, then you will find these business ideas useful.

1. Thrift clothes

These days, students are looking for cheaper and casual wears, something simple, something less flamboyant. You can get nice wears in bulk and start selling to students at affordable prices.

2. Liquid soap

Students need liquid soap to wash their clothes , pots, and plates. Here is what Christiana Agah, a sophomore at the University of Ibadan, has to say:

“My mom’s friend taught me how to make it before I entered school because I wasn’t good in catering and tailoring. She felt I could use liquid soap business to support myself in school. Liquid soap is the only trade I did and got right. Later on, I grew interest in it and began to learn more about it, learned about the transparent liquid soap method, online and with thousands of YouTube videos. Then I saw other people making bastard money from it and decided to fully take it on.”

PoliticsChimamanda Writes US, UK Leaders, Slams Them For Congratulating President-elect, by Azeemokoya(op): 6:46am On Apr 07, 2023
Foremost Nigerian novelist, Chimamanda Adichie has stated that the process of the Nigeria presidential election was intentionally manipulated.

In a letter on Thursday, April 6 addressed to Joe Biden, the US president, Chimamanda expressed dissatisfaction over the process of the presidential election conducted on February 25 in an article published on The Atlantic.
She said the election was full of discrepancies and irregularities which were all shunned by the Independent National Electoral commission (INEC).

“Since the end of military rule in 1999, Nigerians have had little confidence in elections. To vote in a presidential election was to brace yourself for the inevitable aftermath: fraud,” she said.

Chimamanda wrote further,

“Elections would be rigged because elections were always rigged; the question was how badly. Sometimes voting felt like an inconsequential gesture as predetermined “winners” were announced.

“A law passed last year, the 2022 Electoral Act, changed everything. It gave legal backing to the electronic accreditation of voters and the electronic transmission of results, in a process determined by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

RomanceWhat Are The Factors To Consider Before Dating Your Friend’s Ex? by Azeemokoya(op): 10:12am On Apr 02, 2023
Relationship matters are serious issues and should be treated as such. In some cases, they can be so complicated or messy, and they require a great deal of wisdom to deal with them or manage.

One of these such issues is whether it is ‘appropriate’ to date your friend’s ex or not. There are a number of factors to consider.

Your level of friendship
It is important to evaluate your relationship with your friend and whether dating his or her ex can negatively affect the bond between you both. No matter how much you love your friend’s ex or vice versa, it is important you first communicate your feelings with your friend and let him/her know what you are up to.

This does not mean that your friend will be comfortable with this or agree. But it is highly important you open up to him or her and know his or her stance. Is your friend comfortable with this? Are there unresolved conflicts between both of them? This can give you some insight into how to deal with potential problems (like sex, conflict and you name it), or even see if the relationship is worth sacrificing your friendship for because you want to date his/her ex. This is because your options are not that limited; there are other men or women out there.

Know what caused the break-up or separation

While communicating with your friend, it is important to ask right set of questions, or investigate by yourself why they broke up...

HealthDo These 5 Things To Fall Asleep Faster by Azeemokoya(op): 8:52am On Mar 28, 2023
The importance of a good night’s rest cannot be overemphasised. Our physical and mental wellbeing depends on it. Yet, more than ever, we are keeping late hours.

Quite a handful of us suffer from insomnia. A common problem insomniacs share is difficulty shutting off their minds. It is essential for the body to relax, for sleep to come. When thoughts run haywire, it becomes impossible for the body to relax. To find out how to relax and fall asleep faster, keep reading.

1. Keep a journal
It is too difficult a burden to be concerned about the events of the next day. Insomniacs find that part of the reason they stay awake is worry. Jotting down your to-do list the night before will help take the pressure off. That is one less thing to worry about.

2. Take a warm bath
Taking a shower or bath has been shown to help in relaxing the body in preparation for sleep. Taking warm beverages like milk, also help. However, avoid caffeine at all costs.

PoliticsFalana: Votes Cast In All Parts Of Nigeria Are Equal by Azeemokoya(op): 12:47pm On Mar 27, 2023
Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has stated that votes cast in all parts of Nigeria are equal, adding that Abuja – the Federal Capital Territory – has been interpreted to be the 37th state of the country.

He was commenting on Section 134 of the 1999 Constitution which has become a contending issue in the aftermath of the 2023 presidential election.

But on Channels Television Sunday Politics, Falana said he will not be making a definite comment on the issue at the moment since it has become a serious legal matter now pending in court, noting that court decisions on the status of Abuja already exist.

“I had expressed an opinion on section 134 of the Constitution on the 23rd of January this year – that is about a month before the presidential election. On that occasion, I expressed a legal opinion and that is why I was very hesitant to join the bandwagon when lawyers started to give political interpretations of that section.

Education5 Most Annoying Things That Nigerian Lecturers Are Guilty Of by Azeemokoya(op): 11:17pm On Mar 25, 2023
I think I write for Nigerian students currently reading a course or the other, or even those that have graduated, that most of their lecturers are sitting comfortably on this group chat.

1. Tear a sheet of paper for this test
A Nigerian lecturer can just walk into his class and make such a statement even though he did not inform the students before that there was going to be a test. It is also typical of them to conduct a test when they notice there are no many students in class that day.

2. Grading students 69, or even 59, 49, 44 (=carryover)

I think Most Nigerian lecturers believe that students are undeserving of 70, or that students do not know enough to earn them an A. In sane climes, the 69 can easily be rounded off to 70 or 59 to 60. In saner climes, a lecturer need not believe that A belongs to his late mother in hellfire.

PoliticsAs An Adult, Not Being Able To Do These Three Things Is A Bit Dangerous by Azeemokoya(op): 11:27am On Mar 23, 2023
Over the years, there has always been emphasis on life skills an adult must cultivate and nurture. Some of these life skills are decision-making, creative thinking, interpersonal relationship skills, self- awareness building skills, empathy, and coping with stress and emotions.

However, as adults, I think it is a bit dangerous not to be able to do these three things.

1. Driving

I know your parents may not have a car. This is not an excuse. You can register in a driving school and start learning driving. This skill is essential because it might come in handy someday.

2. Swimming

Swimming is a great workout because you need to move your whole body against the resistance of the water. Swimming is a good all-round activity because it keeps your heart rate up, boosts your mood and relieves stress, builds endurance, muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness...

PoliticsIgbos: Should Southeasterners Clamour For A Referendum? by Azeemokoya(op): 5:07pm On Mar 21, 2023
Should the Igbos in Lagos and other states in Nigeria begin to live in fear due to the emergence of Bola Ahmed Tinubu into power.
Is it time for the Igbos to clamour for a referendum and earn the independence they have demanded since the civil war in 1967?

Since Tinubu, a Yoruba man is now the president-elect of the federal republic of Nigeria, I think it’s only ideal for a referendum to be carried out for Igbos to leave and form an independent entity.

With what happened during the gubernatorial election in Lagos on Saturday, March 18, it’s apparent the Yoruba fundamentalist and traditionalist no longer want the Igbos in their lands.

What exactly are/were they (APC) afraid of?

If Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the returning governor of Lagos state had properly done his job within his first tenure, he wouldn’t be unleashing thugs on the streets to threaten those want to vote competence.

If Bola Ahmed Tinubu is indeed a strategist and democrat as plenty so-called Yoruba fundamentalist and traditionalist claim, why is his approach always coercion, intimidation, assault and attack on people who want to carryout their civic responsibility.

CelebritiesNow That Elections Are Over, 9ja Twitter Will Continue These 5 Discussions by Azeemokoya(op): 11:44pm On Mar 19, 2023
If you are a Nigerian who is active on Twitter, you are familiar with how the 9ja Twitter community functions. Every week, there are topics that will be discussed, only to be tabled again the following week. During the collation of the presidential election results, nobody dared digress. Everybody had eyes on the INEC.

It is almost like, Nigerians never tire of these discussions. Now elections are over and Nigerians need a distraction. Nevertheless and just as a reminder, here are 5 topics that 9ja Twitter will probably discuss this week.

1. Gender wars
If it isn’t the classic gender war between Uloma (@ulxma) and all Nigerian men, what is it? Every once in a while Nigerian men come up with the most ridiculous hypothetical scenarios. And then ask women what they would do.

Case in point: “Say your husband is struggling financially and rent is due. Are you guys paying it or do you guys expect him to find a solution on his own?” “If my mother and you are about to enter the car I am driving, where will you sit?” Uhm, maybe on your mother’s lap in front?

2. Who is supposed to cook
Two adults in a relationship but it is always the woman that should cook. This topic never goes anywhere. It is a classic, just like number one.

PoliticsOur Mother Tongue, Gbadebo Rhodes-vivour, And The Rest Of Us by Azeemokoya(op): 9:26am On Mar 19, 2023
When I was a sophomore at the University of Ibadan, my very close neighbor and friend off campus where I was living then once commented frankly that he believed the best thing that had ever happened to me was that I could speak the English language with profound ease. It was a compliment, but an embarrassing one at that, I must say.

We were a group of eight boys at the backyard chatting away our time when I quietly excused myself to pick my mom’s call. I spoke Ikale very delightedly and delightfully with her on phone that day and a few of them noticed this. It was after the call ended that this close neighbour of mine made the comment. I’d switched to English immediately after the call, and he looked at me for a moment wondering in awe why there was no mother tongue’s interference in my spoken English before he made his comment.

I took his comment that day in good faith and it comforted me in some way; in that it made me realize how well I’d perfected my spoken English to a point where no one would know where I came from or saw the Ikale in it. No, I was not speaking like a native speaker, and I certainly was not ‘faking’ a British accent. My voice was still unique in its way. I was just speaking with every consciousness of the correct stress placement, rhythm and intonation.

When I was growing up, my parents never spoke English with me. They did not understand a significant amount of it hence the reason. I learnt and used the English language largely in school. It never bothered me that my parents did not speak it; and I had always done well in the English language. I had a distinction in my O’levels English language. Even at the University, I have always performed incredibly well in the English courses I took as electives from the department of English. I am driving at a particular truth.

It is possible that your children know and become better at the English language, even without you speaking the language with them in the earliest years of their lives. The general idiosyncrasy among ‘educated’ parents of only allowing their children speak English and banning them from speaking their indigenous languages is not only ridiculous but also distasteful.

PoliticsSanwo-olu : Why Is Lagos State Governor Running Helter-skelter? by Azeemokoya(op): 7:18am On Mar 18, 2023
The recent feats of the Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu in his electoral campaigns for a second term has become a running joke in the country and these acts can been pinned down to the governor’s fear of his opposition and his desperation to be re-elected

Electoral campaigns over the years have been characterized with public affiliation with the people and an appeal to their emotions.

This is naturally to give the people a sense of inclusiveness and to endear the candidate to the public. Although the candidates’ capabilities and past performance in leadership are also considered, these public campaigns and canvassing for votes help in securing the seat.

So it shouldn’t be any surprise to find the incumbent governor of Lagos state doing the same to cajole people to re-elect him but this time the governor seems to have chosen the wrong move.

Under normal circumstances, the strategy should have endeared him to the people and assured him of a sure win but reverse is the case if we put into consideration the trolling; derogatory comments and mockery his actions has elicited online.

The Multi-Dimensional Sanwo-Olu
From mechanic to hairstylist, church usher and many other vocations the governor has recently added to his portfolio, instead of the desired results, the people instead react with aggression like a cat stroked the wrong way.

PoliticsA Day In The Life Of A Cashless Nigerian by Azeemokoya(op): 4:41pm On Mar 17, 2023
You wake up early in the morning on a Monday morning. You leave for work and it is only when you reach the junction and are about to hail a keke that you remember that you have zero cash on you to pay for transport. That means you will leg it.

After work, you are lucky that your colleague who has a car decides to give you a lift. He packs you and 5 other colleagues in his Ford focus. The hunger in your stomach would have remained calm but now the heat mixed with the stench of body odour is threatening to bring up your breakfast of black tea and bread.

You haven’t had milk since the day you went to the bank to withdraw your hard earned money and they refused. Now Mama Boy is charging 2k for 5k. Even at that, you would have to go there early to join the line.

Today, you do not have the 2k to give to her. On the list of things you do not have is also food. You have just one pack of spaghetti left which you will eat with palm oil for dinner.

BusinessWhat Social Media Is Not Telling Us About Success by Azeemokoya(op): 7:38pm On Mar 16, 2023
In this social media era, our lives are constantly being inundated with tons of information, stories, and axioms that affect the way we think about ourselves, other people, our society, and life.

For example, while scrolling through your timeline, say Twitter or Facebook, you stumble on a student’s post which is about celebration of his admission into a university abroad, and something nudges you that it could have as well been you. It is not that you have not been trying your best to get admitted into a university abroad, the time is just yet to come.

But this news that you stumble upon, this student that you may not know from Adam and his announcement have shifted the way you see yourself, especially when you have seen multiple rejections in the past months.

Now, this student may have had his shares of failure, but he, because of time and the desire to bury them for good, refrains from writing about them. You know how typical this trend has become of our lives, how we all paint and project the best versions of ourselves to outsiders.

The roaring doubts, existential crisis, multiple rejections, feelings of inadequacies, perennial struggles, and other associated thoughts that bedevil his life are not what he may like or feel comfortably to write about when sharing his success story.

According to the Nation sources, the cash bonanza is intended to give undue advantage to the LP candidate, Mr. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, over the two other major contestants – incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the APC and Mr. Olajide Adediran of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), whose campaign and mobilization have been seriously affected by the cash squeeze caused by Emefiele’s Naira redesign policy.

Aside from Emefiele’s N500 million cash, the LP has also reportedly received $2 million cash from a famous retired billionaire general, who hails from the North, the paper reported.

The provision of dollars for LP is to match the APC candidate in the Lagos polls “dollar-for-dollars”, the source added.

EducationNRTC English: Stop Saying ‘more Better’ When You Speak Or Write by Azeemokoya(op): 5:23am On Mar 11, 2023
The use of comparative forms in English can be tricky. When two people or things are compared, we talk about comparatives. Examples include taller, bigger, faster, stronger, more expensive, etc. And when more than two people or things are compared, we talk about superlative use. Examples include the tallest, the biggest, the fastest, the strongest, the most expensive, etc.

For example:

My house is larger than hers.
This box is smaller than the one I lost.
Your dog runs faster than Jim’s dog.
The girl is the tallest girl in the class.

However, there are some irregular comparative and superlative forms. You should familiarize yourself with this arrangement: positive/comparative/superlative. Examples include good/better/the best, bad/worse/the worst, much or many/more/the most, less/lesser/the least etc.
