POLICE DETAINS SHEEP IN MAIDUGURI …For eating up fried fish …Fish seller demands justice By Yakubu Ahmed-BK The Police in Maiduguri have arrested and detained a lone sheep and her two lambs on a complaint of eating up a heap of fried fish displayed for sale at Bulabulin Ward of the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council. The arrest and detention of the mother sheep took place yesterday evening and as at the time of writing this report, the sheep was still under detention. The arrest was made following a complaint lodged at the Bulabulin Divisional Police headquarters by one Yusuf Ibrahim who sells fish along a busy road in the neighborhood. He complained that the sheep in question had terrorized him for over years by laying in wait for him to be carried away and then pouncing on the stock of fried fish and making a mouthful grab of a chunk until he or bystanders realize and chase her away. Malam Yusuf Ibrahim said that he had bore the intrusion and criminal behavior of the sheep for five years, but the action of the sheep yesterday had caused him huge losses that he could not take it anymore. He said before his attention turned to the sheep when she made a grab for it, it had eaten a big chunk causing severe loss. He further remarked that the sheep had formed the habit of coming around his selling point, patiently keeping watch from a distance while he fries, behaving as if it had no ulterior motive and then as soon as his attention shifts, the sheep makes a dash towards the table and before he knew it, it had eaten as much as it could before being sent away. He added that he had tolerated these acts for five years and had severally asked the owner to take action by tying and feeding the sheep - all to no avail. The owner of the sheep one Luba Mohammed - a housewife, lamented that she does not know how and when the sheep developed a liking for fried fish. She admitted that the fish seller had indeed laid complains to her severally over the years on the persistent havoc caused him by the sheep. She begged Malam Yusuf to temper justice with mercy and release the sheep, with a promise that she will either sell, slaughter or tie it at home. Elders of the neighborhood, Malam Yusuf and Malama Luba were locked in discussions late into the night, at the Police station on how to settle the matter amicably. Efforts to speak to officers at the Police station on the matter proved abortive. They insisted that they have no mandate to speak to journalists.

The race for the 2023 general elections recorded a twist on Friday as a Senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu, Chimaroke Nnamani, opened a formal campaign for the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He described Tinubu as the most successful out of the 36 governors, who served between 1999 and 2007. In an interview in Abuja, Nnamani, who represents Enugu East Senatorial candidate on the platform of the PDP and holds the 2023 Senatorial ticket of the PDP to seek re-election, said Tinubu remained the most effective system builder out of the 1999-2007 class of governors. He noted that the class of 1999 governors had it rough in the beginning, saying, “Most of us inherited a state that had all of its sectors in poor conditions as a result of several years of military rule. All we had was pure joy in our electorate’s hearts because they had a democratically elected governor. “From health to education, to the economy and security, Lagos and many other states were in turmoil as a result of years of military rule but Tinubu made the most progress out of all of us in reforms of various sectors, with Enugu State coming in second. “This large progress came because Tinubu was able to assemble the best brains in Lagos to examine each sector of Lagos economy and provide a workable solution to its unique challenges.” In the Education sector under Tinubu, Nnamani pointed out that they discovered that out of the 7, 877 classrooms that were available, 5, 908 needed renovation, adding that with 682,000 students, the 7, 877 classrooms were insufficient due to the UNESCO standard of 1:25 students per classroom. The former Enugu governor said the Tinubu-led administration was tasked with figuring out how to add 5,768 more classrooms to the existing ones, saying that he rose to the challenges by erecting new elementary, junior secondary and senior secondary schools in Lagos between 1999 and 2007 to address this issue. The Tinubu-led government, according to Nnamani, embarked on human capital development to guarantee that pupils received the finest education possible with a series of staff training and development programs in various courses, seminars, and workshops. “Numerous principals were sponsored to travel to Cape Town, Nairobi, and Auckland between 1999 and 2007, adding that in total, over 100 instructors received training in Nigeria and other French-speaking African nations. He disclosed that in order to keep up with the most recent global educational trends, Lagos State under Tinubu funded the training of 1, 400 teachers to teach the recently introduced family life health education by the national council on education, stressing that in doing so, Lagos State became the first to adopt and execute FLHE program. He said the Asiwaju-led government also had an effect on the tertiary institution as a backlog of over 25,000 diploma, degree, and postgraduate certificates were cleared, adding that Lagos State University also implemented online course registration, fee processing, and result checking. The Lagos State University College of Medicine was founded by Tinubu to provide top-notch medical training and facilitated the accreditation in 2005, which enabled the first class of medical doctors to graduate in 2006. He maintained that Tinubu would replicate the success in Lagos across the country and has the capacity to revamp the economy and make Nigeria work for all. By Momoh Jimoh, Abuja |

TINUBU PRESIDENCY: WHY IT IS IN THE HANDS OF THE YORUBAS By Yakubu Ahmed-BK It is becoming clear by the day, that the 2023 elections, as far as the presidential contest is concerned, is a two horse race. The fight for the coveted office, is, largely between Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar. Both Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, are fringe players whose chances are, in reality, non existent. Of course, the bulk of the votes, to make or mar any of the two leading contestants is, going by the experiences of the past, domiciled in the North. For either Tinubu or Atiku to become president, how any of them fares in the North becomes critical in the long run. I give it to Tinubu to coast to victory owing to a number of factors. Atiku is a perennial loser; a desperate one at that. His desperation can be gleaned from his penchant to jump ship each time the result of his many misadventures become evident to him. Yes, Buhari too had tried his hands in the presidency on a number of occasions without success, until in 2015, when, he learnt, the hard way and at the 11th hour, that he alone, and despite his cult-like followership in the North, couldn’t just nick it. The inescapable reality of the Nigerian electoral situation is that no region on its own strength, can make anyone president by fiat. The history of the alliances in the 60’s up to the very last one, had proved those realities. And this reality, is even more evident and instructive now. One good point in the case of both Tinubu and his running mate Kashim Shettima is that none of them has ever lost any election they have entered into in their respective illustrious political careers, even when the two never held office at the same time. They have been progressive politicians all their life and, despite the differences in time when they both held offices of governors, cultural differences between their states and the nature of the challenges they faced, they shared in the manner they had individually developed their respective states amidst daunting challenges, as well as resource constraints that arose out of man made hiccups and competing demands. It is still instructive to speak about the achievements of the two men, in relation to what Atiku Abubakar has achieved in terms of provision of infrastructure, mentorship of people who had remained critical to the evolution of tested class of leaders, bridge building capacity across the nation and being there for the people at times of their needs. Tinubu has been able to build time-tested bridges across the country and the role he played in the emergence of Buhari and the APC in 2015 and the re-election in 2019 was a watershed in political calculations and winning strategy. Tinubu has played his part to the North. Whatever judgement is passed on the Buhari administration holds no water at all in how the capacity of Tinubu is judged. Buhari was prodded all the years back and will ultimately be judged collectively by most Nigerians who, rightly or wrongly believed in his capabilities and his records of service. His track records as a no nonsense, incorruptible and unsmiling general were brought to the fore as evident of his suitability for the job. Tinubu too, combined the cult-followership of Buhari in the North and the block voting pattern in the South West to wrestle power out of the hands of a People’s Democratic Party which has messed up big time and had placed the nation on the path of ruin. The question is: is Tinubu capable? Does he have a capable running mate in Kashim Shettima? The capacity of Tinubu and Shettima, based on their track records were never in doubt at all. They provide the nation a window to get it right now. And the North knew that it is indeed a pay back time. In any case, it is in the interest of the North to play by the rules of the game, that is to allow the South to take its own shot in 2023 because, for the country to maintain and sustain this integral unifying anchor, nothing should be done to interrupt this chain, not even for the North to become overtly insensitive to the threat to national integration which billowed out of that feeling of marginalization which nearly tore the fabrics of our survival as a nation with our kind of diversity. Atiku Abubakar was reckless, dangerously insensitive and selfish. He contested and elbowed his way to the PDP presidential ticket against the grains of his party’s constitution which recognized the need to respect power shift between the North and the South every eight years. Because he had the financial war chest and is consumed by a dangerous and desperate personal ambition to become President, he bought his way through to the ticket. The good thing about it is that the North will play its part to keep the flag of integration and inclusiveness flying by voting for the APC ticket. But we must recognize the fact that the North has two presidential candidates in Atiku and Kwankwaso and the reality is that the votes in the North win be skewed in that order. Tinubu, Atiku and Kwankwaso would each get their mouthfuls, with Tinubu chewing the chunk. I see Tinubu getting the upper hand even if what he fill his mouth with will not be big enough to say he will be home and dry. This is the juncture where the votes from the South West should come in, in torrents to separate the men from the boys. The South East is likely going Obi’s way, largely, and the South South will be the battle ground to consolidate on the constitutional demand for parity. The Yorubas should vote like they have never done before. They must come out in their numbers to vote and to become the swing states to sway victory to Tinubu’s side. The same role Kano, Borno and Katsina have played in producing the votes to shut the mouths of Atiku and his ilk and swayed victory Buhari way, will be the same critical role voters in the South West should play in 2023 to shut the mouths of the bigots who have arrayed against the nation and whose only desire is to corner power again, not because they have anything to offer, but because their marabouts have looked into a crystal ball and have thus given the office to them. The Muslim/Muslim ticket brouhaha is just a smokescreen deployed by the slavetakers to steal their way to power to finish the anti-Nigeria agenda which they spent 16 years unfolding, but which Nigerians put a stop to in 2015. |
