Webmasters / Re: Nigeria's First Web Conference Hold January 2010: And It Depends On You! by badesemowo(m): 7:38am On Jan 25, 2010
All information/discussion about the conference will move to the forum part of the nigeriawebconference.com (I believe? ) when the site is ready.

For now , they are growing the group on FB while keeping peeps posted , here too . I am sure you can PM , naijaweb to get a copy of the document.

I must tell you , it is well thought out. I have not been able to study and make input yet but I think its a great starting point .
Webmasters / Re: Nigeria's First Web Conference Hold January 2010: And It Depends On You! by badesemowo(m): 10:50pm On Jan 16, 2010
I WOULD LOVE THIS CONFERENCE TO HOLD ,

naijaweb:

Bade, i haven't accepted PM, but i've asked ola white and he's agreed. I have to meet wt him to clarify some things and get back to u guys.
Yawa, i believe as a moderator u can delete some off topic comments here, right?

1. Mr. Ola White is it possible you formerly accept PM role here ?
2. Is it possible we get a collated document of all the decisions made so far ( those yet to be made ) .
3. I'm glad the website is going up in a CMS , what is the ETA for launch ?
4. By now we should have some sort of project timeline, I really would like to know what I can do to help the conference become a reality

I WOULD LOVE THIS CONFERENCE TO HOLD ,
Webmasters / Re: Nigeria's First Web Conference Hold January 2010: And It Depends On You! by badesemowo(m): 3:07pm On Jan 15, 2010
People , Lets focus on the issue of the conference . Pleaaaaaaassssssseeeeeeeeeee .

As for our website showing as rogue on virginmobile , It could be associated with a lot of things, (including IP address of the hosting server being blacklisted by the ISP). If it is a blacklist issue, other ISPs would probably soon follow suit. Whatever the issue is, it needs to be fixed by either 1. Hosting provider or 2. the web developer. We cannot afford to ignore.

And now back to the idea of the conference. Has our honourable PM accepted ?
Webmasters / Re: Nigeria's First Web Conference Hold January 2010: And It Depends On You! by badesemowo(m): 9:48am On Jan 12, 2010
My apologies for not being around to follow up on Nigeria Web Conference . I'm glad the name I suggested was finally chosen ( I hope that gets mea free pass? )

Anyhow , I have tried to followthe thread. I will proceed to make some comments.

Website

Quadrillo , Let me first appreciate your work so far on the site.
I hope my comments as I proceed to list below does not detract from the fact that you have atleast taken initiative to produce a site where we all have failed.

1. I might be wrong but it seems the site is not running on any form of CMS ? This would be a foundational mistake. I suggest you build from any of the open source options (it does not have to be joomla) , that way others may be able to work on it too.

2. You could focus on the layout and design for now and give some other people (I suggest Yawa & DHTML ) editorial access so they can work on the content.

3. I don't particularly like the look and feel. I know it is still a work in progress , (and I hate people criticising my work before its done too). Anyway maybe you could create placeholders too and some people can volunteer graphics.
For example, I think a nice glossy web2.0 bg image would be nice. Can anyone cook up something ?

IN all , I would say nice work Wuad, keep it up.

Organising Company.

Yes, it is fine to use the company name for marketting and advertising purposes. The event has to be owned (managed) by some sort of organisation anyway . PS: That makes you Project Manager .

Facebook

1. I would have prefered we work with facebook page and not group .
why ?
a.Groups have a limit of 5000 people (for sending messages e.t.c)
b.with pages you can get a short URL i.e www.facebook.com/nigeriawebconference after 25 fans.
c.Posts on pages appear more on users walls and feeds.

I guest that is too late now .

2. Also, I suggest that we don't start promoting this event fully until some key decisions have been made by the working committee (led by our new project manager) and we have a fully functioning website.

Financial
I notice there is still no talk of a budget and money issues. This can potentially cripple the event oh .
Case in point ? Who is going to pay for the venue ? Halls in Lagos start from 50K (for a really small one ) to 1milion for expo hall (minus food and you can't bring in food) to over 3m for some other venues .
Translation ! Is this a free event ? If is , who is footing the bill ? If not, how will project lead raise seed capital to atleast run some things before people start paying.

Flame Wars ?
Abeg oh, people, softly softly oh. I am sure we all understand that not all our suggestions on this project would taken, especially those of us that are playing backbench roles. Lets give project lead all the support they need. Lets keep all criticism constructive. Lets keep suggestions coming and lets do a local organising meeting soon.

I 'm sorry I just appear and disappear from this thread arbritrarily. Like the rest of us, there are just too many things to do.

Let me quickly add that now I see a potential usefulness of Google Wave. It would have been easy for all of us to cancel , update, add suggestions to one wave .
Webmasters / Re: Nigeria's First Web Conference Hold January 2010: And It Depends On You! by badesemowo(m): 9:38pm On Dec 22, 2009
Thank you for the offer for Project Lead but Unfortunately I will not be able to take it up right now . We have quite a few IT niche events coming up in 2010 in IT. I might not have that much time to focus fully on this event, besides I don't want to be accused of conflict of interest.

Say what about a Sunday afternoon / evening thing , AIT's infotech group held their event on a sunday last month

As for name: I would say go for nigeriawebconference.com .
Though its a bit long, there is no chance of typos. I am not such a fan of "naija" in domain names as it is difficult to spell on Phone.

I still insist that we give a long time for the planning process. Chances of success would be lower otherwise ,
Except , the converse being having a few smaller events in preparation for a much larger event maybe a year away from now in 2011 or something?

You can find pictures of Joomla Day here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=141984&id=503597006 . We still have not gotten round to updating the site with pictures.

I ll try and collate some of the stuff from our event review . For example, we held the last J!day on a saturday but we still got some complaints from people about having to miss weddings e.t.c . I think one of the major issues on the Nigerian scene is support though . Response to our various email was very discouraging ,
Webmasters / Re: Nigeria's First Web Conference Hold January 2010: And It Depends On You! by badesemowo(m): 7:26pm On Dec 21, 2009
This is sounding interesting and I must say exciting .

I volunteer to help out too , So who is taking lead on this, as Project Manager and all ? Could you list out preliminary draft of needs and activities so people could pick what they can do ?

I only glanced through the posts so far but I think we should decide on some of the major key points so the web developers will have quality content.

Physical Meeting
I noticed there was talk about a meeting ? If it is in Lagos I might be able to pop in and maybe add my own 2cents as my office has closed for the year. I would say hold on from registering the domain till some major key points are decided.

title
I like the flow of the title but I'm thinking KISS :
Rebranding Nigeria: Best use of Web Technology ;

Also, I am a believer in "think big, start small , grow fast . " . Please lets not plan to bring down the whole heavens on the first event .

Date
For the question of date, I would say May/June 2010 will be most appropriate.
Reasons:
1. People in other states/countries will be able to schedule a trip, if our value proposition is strong enough.
2. Project Management will be able to send out proposals to Companies and other organisations to sponsor the event.
3. Fund Raising will be able to raise funds from members or get people to start registering . ( I really hope we can make it a free event)

So to get the ball rolling , I pick Saturday, June 26th (12 - 6pm) 2010 . Its a saturday. Environmental Sanitation Day in lagos so most people are not working that weekend. People catching flights can catch early morning flight ,.

Need a Project Manager
Really the major thing needed right now is that 1 person that would serve as Project Manager for the event.

So thats my own quick submission.

PS: Joomla Day Nigeria was successful .

Webmasters / Re: Nigeria's First Web Conference Hold January 2010: And It Depends On You! by badesemowo(m): 4:43pm On Dec 03, 2009
@yawatide, I believe in free speech too , but I only spoke publicly because I could not find any other way. I am usually a silent observer and hate it too when people post off topic.

So may I please, beg you again to delete my last 3 posts (including this one) before I'm labelled a nuisance.

Ps: I still can't / don't know how to PM you.
PPS: We still have not solved the mystery of my missing posts about Joomla Day.
Webmasters / Re: Nigeria's First Web Conference Hold January 2010: And It Depends On You! by badesemowo(m): 10:07pm On Nov 25, 2009
May be not exactly what you are thinking of but :

3rd edition of Joomla Day Nigeria holds on December 12th , 2009 in Yaba , Lagos, Nigeria. Its a free event but the hall takes only about 100 people . Registeration is open at www.joomlang.com .

In terms of a more neutral Web conference, it would be nice. Though it would cost a bit and you would need to find sponsoring organisations. Keep us posted.

yawa-ti-de:

I am actually not in the country and don't intend to visit this year so unfortunately, I won't be able to participate, sorry. Having said that, I wish you well and wouldn't mind a website where I could visit to keep myself abreast of the day's events. I guess dhtml will be able to attend cool

I wouldn't say I know Joomla! a lot. I do what I can when I can and let my work/the client do the talking. I have actually only done 1 site with Joomla! though I first read up on it about 3 years ago and found it to be quite interesting.
How about it DHTML ?
Webmasters / Re: What Cool Joomla Site(s) Have You Seen? by badesemowo(m): 12:27pm On Sep 01, 2009
Well its actually not that hard.
Joomla defines the component folder and administrative folder by a global variable:
JPATH_COMPONENT , JPATH_ADMINISTRATOR
so you just have to change it in one place.

except ofcourse kid developers that point to the administrative path absolutely.

and most upgrades can be done by just overwritting the adminstrative directory, where ever it is.

the only thing is why bother if you are not working for a bank, or government.

@yawatide , thank you.
Webmasters / Re: Best Website So Far 2009: Drop Yours by badesemowo(m): 9:02am On Sep 01, 2009
well the lasgidi guys have some really nice stuff in their portfolio (http://gobbleabba.com/#/Portfolio(%20Move%20the%20Black%20Line%20for%20Complete%20Portfolio)).
Lasgidi is not my favourite from their portfolio.
For me ? I d say wait till the end of the year.

May be someone should consider creatiing a poll of some sort to do some voting.

Probably, create a new category : "Best Nigerian site of 2009.". Every one must submit a new thread for their project, screen shot and description of the project must be added or the post gets bounced.

Then a moderator creates a poll at the end of the year for the threads that have the most comments.

I would do it myself but I'm hardly on Nairaland. Seun consider it?
Webmasters / Re: Joomla, Pligg, Elgg, Drupal Or Xoops & Social Networking by badesemowo(m): 8:51am On Sep 01, 2009
Joomla for me too, why? because I can easily extend it . I started out with various CMS a few years back some were too difficult for me . Mambo now Joomla was easier to learn. I use Drupal for some more complicated functions , like CCK was a feature not available in Joomla Core but now we've got K2 extension sef.

@yawa-ti-de , @dhtml: U sound like you know Joomla a lot ? Would you be willing to give a talk at joomla day nigeria . (3rd edition coming up in December) for newbies & intermidiates to Joomla ? We are trying to build up a critical mass of facilitators for this year's edition.
No disrespect intended, I'd like to see some of your stuff though.
Webmasters / Re: What Cool Joomla Site(s) Have You Seen? by badesemowo(m): 8:36am On Sep 01, 2009
The new GTB site is running Joomla.
www.smartbuyng.com
Turkish Airlines Nigeria. www.turkishairlinesng.com (we made that one)

@infinity . Did you know you can actually move the administrator folder, remove the tp=1 from showing module position, in Joomla, not that I think the doctors would have the resources (and business case) to do that but that its possible.

More high profile guys (internationally) are using open source systems instead of investing in new codes. They invest in removing the common fingerprints of the codes.
Webmasters / Re: Best Cms Joomla, Drupal: by badesemowo(m): 8:26am On Sep 01, 2009
Well in my opinion , It depends on you.

Drupal has a steep learning curve (in my opinion) but when you understand what is going on , you will know how extremely powerful the nodes are. Joomla has a shorter learning curve and it is highly flexible too.

Considering my organisation runs Joomla Uni Nigeria ( a little advertising does not hurt), I vote for Joomla.

@all I missed the other post you'all talking about but I'm going sniffing around out of curiosity.
TV/Movies / Re: Ultimate Search 6: Wale Alabi Eviction Was Political by badesemowo(m): 11:28pm On Aug 06, 2009
I have some questions about ultimate search.

Do they air the show 1 day behind ? I.e activities of yesterday is shown today?

If not, how come they are able to produce the show about 2 hours and distribute it to the syndicates of TV stations. The first airing on Silverbird at 9?

Webmasters / Re: Punch Newspaper Site Possibly Hacked? by badesemowo(m): 7:32am On Sep 21, 2008
Hacking, ? Virtually Every Server in the world has been hacked at onetime or the other, The only way I believe to remain secure is to hire hackers to regularly "try" to hack into your site, I mean you've got to check your scripts, hosting vulnerabilities, denial of service, , and so much more. Even Joomla.org (the world's largest CMS) was hacked recently,

But in all, I would blame the company maintaining the website for this. (if there is a maintenance contract in place)

I hope you know most times when an Hacker gets access to the system, they leave many backdoors so they can come back anytime. You probably will not find this (especially in a big file system) . The only solution is to recreate the whole hosting account and restore a backup.

Just my own 2 kobo.
