Commonsensically, yes buy the fact that these are secular systems to begin with. But when commonsense is no longer common. A literal ban is implemented. Do you have a hard time understanding that too? undecided

In case you don't know France formerly had religion ingrained in its systems. It is a mostly Catholic nation. The debatable idea of freedom and independence of thought led to many of these nation banning religious expression in schools. But today, we see liberal factions in these nations trying to force down the strange ideas of homosexuality and transgenderism upon kids. If they are allowed then the Christians and Muslims have the right to resist the French govt.

What has those to do with religion? Una no fey know how to stay on topic abi? undecided
To answer your question, I would ask you another question. Why was religious expression barred in schools in the first place?
Foreign Affairs / Re: France Bans Muslim Students From Wearing Abaya Dress In State Schools by barojana: 11:35am On Aug 28, 2023
In French public schools Christians are not allowed to wear crosses nor Jews allowed to wear their kippa either. So there's some equality there.

However, I hope they don't turn around and start promoting homosexuality and transgenderism when they've banned other religions from expressing themselves.

Foreign Affairs / Re: US Approves Israel's Sale Of Arrow 3 Missile Defense To Germany by barojana: 5:37am On Aug 18, 2023
Some of you may ask.

Why should US approve an Israeli transaction with Germany?

Well, the answer is that when it comes to Israel's missile defense, the US co-funds research and development with Israel, in the hope of buying into the technology later.

Most times the US has indigenous requirement to buy American, especially for big ticket items. The only way to go around this requirement is to cofund Israel's tech development.

In this case Israel's Aerospace Industries designed everything from radar, to fire and control, launchers etc. While US Boeing developed interceptor missile.

The US has approved Israel’s request to sell the Arrow-3 missile system to Germany, the Israeli defense ministry said Thursday, in what will become Israel’s largest ever defense deal.

The approval paves the way for Israel and Germany to sign a landmark $3.5 billion defense agreement, according to the Israeli defense ministry.

Israeli officials had been informed of the approval by the US Department of State on Thursday, according to a spokesperson for Israel’s Ministry of Defense.

Israel and the United States have been jointly developing the multi-billion-dollar Arrow missile defense system since 1986.

The Arrow 3 system is designed to intercept exo-atmospheric ballistic missiles, enabling interceptions at high altitudes above the atmosphere.

Senior Israeli and German officials will sign a letter of commitment worth $600 million to enable immediate work on the project, the Israeli ministry spokesperson said. A full contract will be signed once the agreement has been approved by both countries’ respective parliaments.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant called the US approval “an expression of confidence in the excellent capabilities of Israel’s defense industries” and a reflection of US-Israeli “powerful defense ties.”

Gallant added that the decision would “contribute to Israel’s force buildup and economy” and that Germany acquiring Israeli defense systems was “meaningful to every Jewish person.”

Foreign Affairs / Re: Russia Vs Israel, Who Will Win In An All Out War? by barojana: 2:08pm On Jul 21, 2023
It depends on who is fighting a defensive war because Israel has no real capacity to wage offensive war against Russia.

If Russia attacks Israel, it's army could only be deployed via Syria. Egypt, Jordan, are not possible entry points due to treaties signed with Israel. Russia's navy would be deployed from Isreal's western sea front.

Russia's attack from Syria would be utterly difficult. The Israeli have a cutting edge land and airforce force armed with the latest defensive and offensive assets Merkava tanks, Patriot, Arrow3, Arrow2, David Sling, Iron Done, Spike anti armour, trophy protection, Jericho 1,2,3 and a plethora of EW systems. In addition. Importantly, Israel has three squadrons of f35s for air superiority. This would blow out any Russian air asset. In addition to a fleet of f15s with advanced avionics. Plus the Russians would have to spend great time with logistics of airlifting resources into Syria.

The Israelis on the other hand would be fighting on home advantage. It's military is specially built to wage war on the rocky deserts of the middle east. Knowing exactly the route of the Russian army means Israel can extensively lay mines.

On the Syrian front, Israel would destroy Russia.

On a naval front is where Israel would suffer enourmously. Israel is extremely outclassed in naval warfare. I don't see how Israel can successfully ward off a Russian naval assault. Perhaps if it can keep it's submarine fleet functional it could do some deterrence.

KunleAkingbadeh:
I am not happy with this news. Why would JAMB Institute such Award with the inclusion of Privately Owned Universities.

It is expected that Private Institutions should be well organized than public ones which are limited by beauricracy, irregularities of Government funding, subservient policies & epileptic subventions. Private Schools should have been excluded from the Award.

N75 million will do well for our struggling public Institutions
Is it a new thing for private sector to receive grant from FG. Think about Boeing, Pfizer, Harvard who collect billions from the US govt and return immense value to the American public. For Nigeria to succeed in its capitalism drive it must own the successes and failures if its private businesses.

Think about how Israel cofunded every tech startup in the 1900s which made it a technology behemoth we all admire today.

Its not ok enough to just call for businesses to succeed. Govt has to actively help with grants, tax rebates and so many other incentives.

BTW In case you don't know, the average public university is by far wealthier than the average private university.

Education / JAMB 75M Grant: Covenant University Uses Money To Build Computer Lab by barojana: 2:18pm On Jul 12, 2023
The Vice-Chancellor of Covenant University, Professor Abiodun H. Adebayo, has reiterated the commitment of the University management with the active support of the Board of Regents to advancing an ICT-driven education environment within the University, which will make students of the institution operate at the cutting edge of technology.

Professor Adebayo made the assertion during the commissioning of an ultra-modern, state-of-the-art computer laboratory for the College of Leadership Development Studies (CLDS) and the College of Management and Social Sciences (CMSS).

According to him, Covenant, since its inception, has been an ICT-driven institution, which has seen her win numerous ICT-related awards in years past, and the University will remain steadfast in maintaining that course.

Professor Adebayo said he was excited about the new laboratory, which is a product of the 75 million Naira award from the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) for emerging as the most compliant institution in keeping with the Admissions Guidelines of the 2020/2021 Admission Exercise.

"When we got the N75,000,000 award from JAMB, we felt the best thing to put the money into use was in consolidating our ICT resources, and today we are happy and excited that we have this computer laboratory with 100 high-end computers to serve the ICT needs of students in CLDS and CMSS," he enthused.

The Acting Registrar, Mrs. Regina Tobi-David, appealed to personnel in the Directorate of Centre for Systems and Information Services to ensure that the laboratory is put to best use in line with the expectations of the University with a view to enhancing learning and knowledge acquisition.

Mrs. Tobi-David tasked them with making routine maintenance a culture in the Directorate so that there would be no issue of a complete breakdown of systems.

The Dean, College of Management and Social Sciences (CMSS), Professor Abiola Babajide, thanked the University Management for deeming it necessary to bequeath a computer lab to the college and assured them that it would be put to best use. Professor Babajide, however, appealed for more, noting the population strength of the two colleges that are to share the facility.

The Director, Centre for Systems and Information Services (CSIS), Engineer Boladele Akanle, thanked the university management for choosing to invest the JAMB largesse on ICT matters, noting that Covenant is operating in a world that is ICT-driven and as such cannot afford to be lagging in her ICT resources.

Engineer Akanle noted that with the new laboratory coming on stream, the tech environment of the university will also witness an increase in activity as students will have more access to these tools for lectures and research purposes.

With the commissioning of the new laboratory, Covenant University now has computer laboratories with over 850 high-end systems to serve the University's academic and research endeavours across the various Colleges in the institution.

The fact that the girl is "exceptionally brilliant" doesn't mean she scored 362. Many of the first class grads you see coming from the likes of UI even mostly and usually had scores between 240 and above.

The question here is "did she score 362 or not". We know the answer to that to be false. The question now is "did she forge the result or it was forged on her behalf."

FACT-CHECK: How Mmesoma Ejikeme’s Fake JAMB UTME Result Came About
Published 4th Jul, 2023

By Daniel Ojukwu

Mmesoma Ejikeme, a 19-year-old student, has come under fire for allegedly parading a fake Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) result.

Ejikeme was initially celebrated for scoring 362 in the 2023 examination, a result that would make her the highest scorer, but the board has come out to say the result she parades is false.

One key argument JAMB made was that the slip Ejikeme paraded was last used in 2021, and the QR code attached reveals a result belonging to one Asimiyu Mariam Omobolanle with a 138 score.

Ejikeme, in a video released on Monday, maintained her innocence, but the debate has raged on. JAMB said her result might have been the work of forgers who pull off pranks to show friends, so FIJ looked into this claim.

OUR ANALYSIS
FIJ checked Google Playstore for applications that could help one manipulate UTME results and found one called ‘JambFun-Fake Jamb Result Maker’.

JambFun-Fake Jamb Result Maker
This app helps users create fake UTME results to “fool your friends!”

We downloaded this app and opened it to reveal a mock ‘JAMB 2022 UTME Results Notification’ slip.

What we did afterwards was fill out the form with sample details to see if it would produce a result similar to the one paraded by Ejikeme. Our finding was staggering.

JAMB UTME result created by FIJ on the app
JAMB UTME result created by FIJ on the app
This result confirmed that one could get a result identical to the one Ejikeme paraded, but did not confirm it was the same app she used to obtain hers.

With the result we forged via the app, FIJ, a candidate in an exam it did not sit for, scored 400 in UTME.

FIJ's forged JAMB result
FIJ’s forged result
We then went further to scan the QR code, and what we found was more revealing.

The result of our scan showed “11231597AC :: Asimiyu Mariam Omobolanle :: 138”, the same result we obtained when we scanned Ejikeme’s paraded result.

FIJ took notice of a tweet published by one Chijioke Chimeziri on Monday. Reacting to a video published by Ejikeme, in which she revealed that her QR code showed another candidate’s name, Chimeziri had attached another result allegedly belonging to Ejikeme, but with a different QR code claiming she scored 362.

We observed that the QR code on this result appeared superimposed on the result, as the code was on a bright shade of white, while the result was on a shade of green. It was doctored.

Claim made by Chimeziri

More claims arose by members of the public claiming people had suffered the same fate in the hands of JAMB in the past.

One Atung Gerald, a native of Kaura, Kaduna State, allegedly scored 380 in the UTME exam, but when we scanned the QR code attached to his peddled result, it read the same “11231597AC :: Asimiyu Mariam Omobolanle :: 138”. All this points to one thing: the results came from one source with a unique code that returns “11231597AC :: Asimiyu Mariam Omobolanle :: 138”. And the source? ‘JambFun-Fake Jamb Result Maker’.

FIJ went further to obtain two original results from applicants who wrote the 2023 UTME exam. When we scanned their results however, they returned a code that led nowhere. This simply means that codes attached to original 2023 UTME results can’t return scores via the common QR Code – Barcode Scanner.

As of press time, Ejikeme had not changed her stance. JAMB maintains a fraud was perpetrated, but it remains to be seen how the events unfold.

Of Nigeria’s 258 universities, only Covenant University in Ota Ogun state makes the top ten of the inaugural Times Higher Education’s (THE) Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings.

THE’s Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings 2023 were officially announced Monday at the organisation’s first forum which took place in partnership with Ashesi University in Ghana.

Four of the top 10 universities are from South Africa and two are from Tanzania.

The University of the Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg, South Africa, topped the ranking .

More commonly known as Wits University, it celebrated its centenary last year and has Nelson Mandela amongst its alumni.

The second highest ranked university is University of Johannesburg in South Africa and in third place is Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, in Tanzania.

University of Pretoria is fourth and Makerere University in Uganda is 5th. University of the Western Cape, also in South Africa is 6th.

Covenant University, a private Christian university in Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria, founded in 2002 is ranked 7th. The university, with affiliation to Bishop David Oyedepo’s Living Faith Church Worldwide is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) in Rwanda is ranked eight, Ashesi University in Ghana is 9th, while Ardhi University in Tanzania is 10th.

“This unique pioneering ranking, which was developed specifically for, and led-by, African education organisations, marks a really significant moment for higher education in the continent”, said Phil Baty, Times Higher Education’s chief global affairs officer.

“It clearly demonstrates the broad and diverse strengths of a wide range of universities and numerous previously unknown differences between public and private universities, which is further illuminated by the results from the student survey.

“We hope this ranking will help African universities celebrate and showcase good practice, benchmark themselves against peers, and identify key areas where they can improve. Collectively, we hope it helps universities to collaborate to address the challenges the continent faces.

“We also hope the ranking will be a valuable tool for the millions of parents and prospective students who are increasingly looking for authoritative information about what a university education will give them,” Baty added.

The pioneering new ranking highlights the strongest universities in Sub-Saharan Africa across a comprehensive range of performance indicators covering five pillars: ‘access and fairness’, ‘Africa impact’, ‘teaching skills’, ‘student engagement’ and ‘resources and finance’.

Nigeria has the most universities in the ranking with 37, followed by South Africa with nine, Ghana and Kenya have seven each and Somalia and Uganda have five each.

The ranking provides a rich source of data on the differences between public and private universities.

Of the 88 ranked universities, 59 (67%) are public, 21 (24%) are private not-for-profit and eight are private for-profit (9%) and seven of the top 10 universities are public.

Public universities received an average overall score in the rankings of 50 and charged students a median of £966 per year. By comparison, private institutions scored an average of 43, with not-for-profits charging £1,922 and for-profits charging £3,291 annually.

Public providers scored higher, on average, across four of the five pillars: access and fairness; Africa impact, resources and finance and student engagement. Private universities generally perform better on teaching and employability skills.

Public universities tend to have considerably more students than private ones averaging more than 18,000 students compared with an average of about 3,500 for private universities and public universities are, on average, almost twice as old (28 years) as private universities (18 years).

A key component of the ranking is a unique student survey accounting for their experiences, which shows students in private universities are generally more satisfied with their experience compared with their public counterparts when judging the facilities, their interaction with peers and the faculty, employability, course quality and teaching engagement.

The Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings methodology was developed by THE’s data team, in consultation with university leaders across Sub-Saharan Africa. The project was initially created by a consortia of African and international higher education organisations including Botho Ltd, Maverick Research and MyCos Data, led by Ashesi University.

THE independently managed all data collection and calculations. The ranking was created in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation.

15 Jun 2023
Germany’s parliament is reported to have approved an advance payment for the acquisition of Israel’s sophisticated Arrow-3 air defence system in a deal worth almost four billion euros ($4.3bn).

The long-range Arrow-3 system is designed to destroy ballistic missiles above the Earth’s atmosphere and is reported to be powerful enough to offer protective cover to Germany’s neighbouring European Union states.

The budget committee in the lower house of the German parliament gave the green light on Wednesday for an initial payment of 560 million euros ($607m), news organisations reported, citing a member of the budget committee and sources.

The announcement marks a major turnaround for Germany after years of under-investment in its armed forces and comes amid Russia’s war in Ukraine, which has exposed a shortage in Western nations of ground-based air defence systems to counter missile and drone attacks.

Funds for the purchase of the Arrow-3 system will come from a landmark 100-billion-euro ($108bn) fund unveiled by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to bolster the country’s defences in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Berlin aims to strike a government-to-government deal with Israel on the purchase of the Arrow-3 system at the end of the year, according to procurement documents by the finance ministry that were prepared for parliament. But Germany could lose part or all of its advance payments should the deal fail, according to the papers, as the initial funds would be used to compensate Israel for costs incurred by then.

If the deal goes ahead as planned, a contract will be signed by the end of 2023, and Berlin expects the Arrow-3 system to be delivered in the final quarter of 2025. The initial payment is intended to set up manufacturing and production in Israel.

Scholz told a government press conference earlier on Wednesday the investment was “a big project that doesn’t just relate to Germany itself”.

Asked if he thought there was any risk in making the initial payment, Scholz said things were “progressing bit by bit and we believe that everything will also be approved”.

According to a report in Germany’s Tagesspiegel newspaper, the federal audit office had warned against releasing funds before initial construction work for the system had been completed in Germany.

Germany has led a push to bolster NATO’s air defences in Europe after seeing Russia’s relentless missile strikes on Ukraine, urging allies to buy deterrence systems together.

More than a dozen European countries have so far signed up to the so-called European Sky Shield Initiative
