That is the kind of shopping in places like Urban London, Swiss markets, etc. It isn't meant for paupers and people living from hand to mouth every onitsha man got his money through his sweat, no govt looters and no free oil money in circulation, therefore no wasteful spending. Politics › Past Governments Encouraged Over-profiteering In Power Sector, Fashola Alleges by basilo101(op): 1:42am On Aug 17, 2016 |
Chineme Okafor in Abuja The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, on Tuesday alleged that past governments of Nigeria largely encouraged business people to take advantage of the country’s power sector and it’s consumers instead of ensuring that the proper things were done to improve power supply. Fashola said in a statement last night in Abuja that the country’s power sector had been run by businessmen who wanted more profits but refused to follow the policy direction of the government on improving the capacity of the sector. The statement was signed by the ministry’s Director of Press, Timothy Oyedeji. It stated that Fashola took in audience the acting Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC), Hajia Ladi-Sule Katagum, when he said: “Until the Muhammadu Buhari’s administration came on-board, the nation’s power sector has been driven by business men who were mostly motivated by profit, hence over the years, no proper consideration for due process, respect for law and order, indeed sustainable policy direction has not been adhered to.” He noted that: “This has been responsible for the proliferation of sub-standard equipment and materials, policy summersault, lack of consumer-centred interests, no data to aid planning, indeed lack of professionalism and concerted efforts in doing things right.” The minister however said that in today’s power sector under his watch, the government role has remained within the areas of policy, regulatory, safety and standards, training of specialised professionals to run the sector. He said those who want electricity meters installed in their homes and business premises should contact the various electricity distribution companies (Discos) in their locality, adding that no meter would be purchased for anyone or group by government. “The who is clear on this, for those that are desirous in investing in power plants they must start from Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), where they are expected to get appropriate permits and licences after which they are to approach the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company (NBET) for Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs),” Fashola explained. He said: “It is expected that with PPAs, investors can access fund from banks and other financial institutions to secure financial muscle for their projects.” He also stressed that government was determined to protect the interest of the customers and will also allow for reasonable margin as profit by investors. He adde that the government will not allow profiteering, and enjoined businessmen in the sector to be thorough, well informed and knowledgeable as well as follow the law and laid down procedures for operating in the sector at all times. http://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2016/08/17/past-governments-encouraged-over-profiteering-in-power-sector-fashola-alleges/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter |
Politics › Nigeria “most Fractured” Now Than Any Time Since Civil War — Obasanjo by basilo101(op): 1:23am On Aug 17, 2016 |
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday lamented the continued threats of disintegration resulting from the activities of armed groups in the different regions of the country. Mr. Obasanjo said Nigeria has never been as divided in history, except for the country’s civil war period between 1967 and 1970. He spoke at the maiden edition of the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ national summit held at Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta. The former president, who was represented by Peter Okebukola, a professor, said the media should not fan the embers of disunity but rather take the lead in the marching towards greater national integration and development. He criticised those calling for the breakup of Nigeria, lamenting that the activities of the Niger-Delta Avengers, Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen had fractured the country. “At no time in our history, except probably during the civil war, has Nigeria been so fractured in the feeling of oneness and belongingness by the citizenry,” he noted. “In the last four months, we have an average of twenty hotspots across the country with huge potential for national disintegration.” He urged the media to support the efforts of government in fighting internal security challenges.
“The press should mobilise the masses to strengthen the democratic process and play a crucial role in promoting a culture of tolerance, non-violence and mutual co-existence,” he said. “For me, this Summit will only be successful if we find a niche for the press in our march to ensuring greater national cohesion, especially at this time in our history,” he said. “Our strength as a nation lies in our unity and national cohesion and I want to entreat you (the media) to begin to preach the gospel of unity in diversity and unity of purpose and cohesion.” Mr. Obasanjo also charged the Nigerian media to pay close attention to investigative journalism, as most news headlines lacked credibility and were based on rumours. “It is unacceptable that a number of media organisations place low premium on investigative journalism,” he said. “These days, many news items that are used as headlines lack credibility and are based on rumours.” The Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, while declaring open the conference, said it was important for journalists as professionals to always be on guard against forces to take advantage of their power for selfish interest. “It is imperative that journalists as professionals should always be on their guard against forces that seek to take advantage of the formidable power of the profession for their selfish ends,” said Mr. Amosun. In his own remarks, Minister of Interior, Bello Dambazau, noted that the power and significance of the media rest on their role of watchdog, stressing that the media through their reports help Nigerians in making informed decisions. “The media must adhere to the ethics of the profession,” he said. “Where the media is unbiased and balanced in their reports, the people will be well informed to make informed decisions.” http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/208713-nigeria-fractured-now-time-since-civil-war-obasanjo.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter

Business › Nigeria Loses N88bn As India, US Reduce Oil Imports by basilo101(op): 10:01pm On Aug 14, 2016 |
India and the United States have slashed their imports of Nigerian crude oil by 43 per cent and 53 per cent, respectively, translating to a loss of at least N88bn in earnings, the latest report from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has shown.
India, which became the single largest buyer of Nigerian crude in 2013 after the US, reduced its imports from Nigeria in May this year as it bought 7.74 million barrels, down from 13.51 million barrels in April; 12.51 million barrels in March and 12.70 million barrels in February.
The Asian country had in January imported 16.29 million barrels of Nigerian crude, its highest monthly level this year, the NNPC data showed.
The US, whose imports of Nigerian crude rose by 577.8 per cent in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period of 2015, reduced its import by 5.77 million barrels in May from 10.13 million barrels in the previous month.
In February, the US bought as much as 12.12 million barrels from Nigeria, making it the second largest buyer of the country’s crude after India.
Using a conservative price of $40 per barrel and N197/$ official exchange rate in May, the decrease of 11.14 million barrels in the two countries’ imports of Nigerian crude amounts to N87.9bn.
Global benchmark, Brent crude, had on May 26 hit $50 for the first time in 2016.
The Editorial Director, European and African Oil, Platts, Joel Hanley, in an interview with our correspondent on the sidelines of the Platts’ Lagos Oil Forum, said India “can go anywhere else to buy if the price is right.”
He, however, said, “Nigeria has priced itself to a level where it has regular buyers in India; obviously, there is investment from India that helps that flow. I will say that it is a buyer’s market. India, China and every other buyer have their pick of the grades these days, and that is why differentials are so low. They can pick and choose whatever they want.
“I think right now in this kind of environment, it is about securing a good relationship and a good, reliable trade flow. Trust is so important. And I think if India and Nigeria can focus on that relationship, there shouldn’t be too much threat to that.
“However, if someone comes in at a cheaper price, then I don’t know how long the Indians will stick around because, they, like everyone else, have money to make.”
Three of Nigerian oil grades, Forcados, Qua Iboe and Brass River – have in the past three months been under force majeure – a legal clause that allows companies to cancel or delay deliveries due to unforeseen circumstances.
The PUNCH had recently reported that a number of India-owned refiners have been actively picking up Malaysian oil cargoes for loading in July and August amid growing uncertainty over the exports of Nigeria’s crude grades, according to regional sweet crude traders.
Following the spate of production disruptions largely caused by the recent surge in militant attacks on oil infrastructure in the Niger Delta that cut the nation’s output to the lowest in almost three decades, exports of the commodity from the country have continued to take a serious beating.
Nigeria relies heavily on earning from oil exports, and the recent production disruptions came as an additional headache for an economy that already suffers from the sharp drop in oil prices since 2014.
Weak demand for Nigerian crude oil has caused the number of ships without cargoes to rise to levels not seen in recent times.
As a result, the cost of sending crude oil cargoes from West Africa to Northwest Europe on Suezmaxes has dropped to the lowest level in over 14 years, Platts data has shown.
The continued force majeure on the three grades has substantially reduced the demand for Suezmaxes in the region in recent months, and caused WAF tonnage list to swell to levels rarely seen by veteran market participants.
Suezmaxes are medium to large-sized ships with a deadweight tonnage between 120,000 and 200,000. They are the largest marine vessels that meet the restrictions of the Suez Canal, and are capable of transiting the canal in a laden condition.
According to one shipbroker’s position list, there were 32 ships available prior to the start of the current fixing window, versus a three-month average of 14.8 ships. There were also 29 ships free of cargo, which could make WAF fixing window.
The number of ships means that each cargo that is shown to multiple owners attracts multiple offers and allows charterers to drive freight rates downwards. http://punchng.com/nigeria-loses-n88bn-india-us-reduce-oil-imports/
