BOILS FROM FOOTBATHS
A warm, wet environment is the perfect breeding ground for bugs — and even if those whirlpool baths often used in pedicures get rinsed with bleach between clients, how often are the pipes and filters cleaned?

In the case of one California salon, not often enough. In 2000, more than 110 clients contracted a skin infection that started out as little red spots and turned into boils.
If you want to use foot spas, cosmetic dermatologist Dr Sam Bunting recommends not waxing or shaving for 24 hours before to avoid cuts, which put skin more at risk of infection.

HEPATITIS C FROM UNSTERILE SCISSORS
Whether it’s a pair of scissors that accidentally nick your ear during a haircut, or clippers that draw blood in a manicure, if instruments aren’t sterilised properly, there’s a risk they could spread blood-borne infections.

Mike Comins, chairman of the British Association of Cosmetic Doctors, says: ‘Hepatitis C is a robust virus that can live outside the body for quite a long time and may not display any symptoms at all. It can linger for decades, increasing your risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer. It’s very contagious and not routinely tested for.’

STROKES FROM WASHBASINS
Ever ended up with a cricked neck after a trip to the hairdresser? Count yourself lucky. Research suggests the uncomfortable position in which you have to hold your neck while being shampooed over a basin could, in some cases, result in a stroke.
Known as Beauty Salon Stroke Syndrome, the condition occurs when an artery in the neck is constricted, cutting blood supply to the brain.

The result can be dizziness, facial numbness, and even a blood clot in the brain. It’s very rare, but those who have arthritis in their neck or hardening of the arteries may be particularly susceptible.

Pamela Crabb, 51, from Poole, Dorset, suffered a stroke after a hair appointment in September 2000. She made a partial recovery but died after another stroke in 2004.
Her widower, Malcolm, said he wanted to ‘alert others to the dangers of Beauty Salon Syndrome, especially those with high blood pressure.’

If you’re worried you may be at risk, avoid over-extending your neck by using towels as padding, or ask to have your hair washed leaning forward over the sink instead.

INFECTIONS FROM CUTICLE CLIPPING
Clipping away ragged cuticles might make your fingers look better, but the cuticle acts as a protective seal around the nail and, if damaged, bacteria can get in and cause infections, resulting in inflamed and swollen skin.

This problem is exacerbated if a nail salon fails to sterilise tools between customers, because not only is the cuticle damaged, but bacteria are introduced at the same time.

Pop singer Paula Abdul complained that a nail infection from a salon caused her pain for an entire year. Ask your manicurist not to clip your cuticles — and ensure she’s using sterilised instruments.

BURNS FROM LEG WAXES
Hot wax has the potential to be seriously dangerous if it’s not handled properly. Bartletts Solicitors, based in Liverpool, specialise in bringing cases against beauticians and hairdressers.

On their website they tell the story of a client who was burned after hot wax was spilled on her during a routine leg wax. The burn required medical attention and, even after healing, left the woman with an area of uneven pigmentation, which could require skin grafting. She successfully sued the salon for the injury and received £4,500.

MRSA FROM BIKINI WAXES
It’s not just burns that you have to worry about. Bikini waxes can go horribly wrong, with common problems including ingrowing hairs and folliculitis (infection of the hair follicle). If not done properly, waxing can remove the uppermost layers of the skin, leaving it susceptible to infections such as MRSA.

This is particularly problematic when salons ‘double dip’, repeatedly using the same spatula in the same pot of wax, potentially transferring infections from the skin of one client to another.

Wondering about a fish pedicure? Or a quick bikini wax? You'd better read this first,

HEPATITIS C FROM FISH TANK TREATMENTS
Last month the government’s Health Protection Agency warned that fashionable fish pedicures, where tiny Garra Rufa fish nibble away hard skin, could spread potentially deadly diseases. If a customer already infected with a blood-borne virus such as HIV or hepatitis bleeds into the water in the tank, then there is a very small chance the virus could be passed to another client, either via the fish or contaminated tank water.

To reduce risks, no one with open cuts should be treated and those with psoriasis or diabetes should avoid fish pedicures altogether.

HEAD LICE FROM DIRTY BRUSHES
Even in the most expensive salons, it’s quite common for a hairdresser to use the same combs and brushes all day without cleaning or sterilising them between clients. You might think that once they’ve washed your hair, it doesn’t really matter, but there’s still the possibility of passing on lice eggs from one person to another. And, while the risk is quite minimal, as one industry insider put it: ‘Do you really want to be rubbing scalps with a bunch of people you don’t know?’

A good hairdresser should be perfectly happy for a customer to provide their own brush or comb.
Celebrities / Mariah Yeater's Lawyers Wants Justin Bieber To Take Dna Test by baskemms: 3:47pm On Nov 03, 2011
As Reported by RadarOnline, Lawyers for the 20-year-old California woman claiming Justin Bieber's the father of her 3-month-old son have responded to comments from the Baby singer's reps distancing their client from the paternity suit he's facing, in this exclusive statement obtained by Star magazine.

Lance Rogers and Matthew Pare told Star exclusively, "Mariah Yeater is pursuing a modest and rightful claim. There is credible evidence that Justin Bieber is in fact the father of her baby. The evidence will be revealed in court." The attorneys reiterated that Yeater has not made any outrageous demands of the 17-year-old singer, but rather is going through the proper protocol expected in a situation as such.

"She is not seeking exorbitant compensation," Rogers and Pare told Star exclusively. "She merely requests that Justin Bieber provide a DNA sample to verify that he is the father of Mariah Yeater’s baby, and if so, to help provide child support as required by California law." In the wake of Star’s exclusive report detailing the paternity suit, Bieber’s camp told ABC News, “It’s sad that someone would fabricate, malicious, defamatory and demonstrably false claims” and that they would “vigorously pursue all available legal remedies to defend and protect Justin against these allegations.”

While the Baby singer himself been out plenty since Star broke the exclusive news -- appearing on Dancing with the Stars, On Air with Ryan Seacrest and tweeting he was going to "ignore the rumors” -- he has not yet publicly delved into the details of the allegations, something Yeater's attorneys addressed in their exclusive statement to Star.

"It is noteworthy that Justin Bieber himself has not denied the fundamental fact that he had unprotected sex with Mariah Yeater following a concert in Los Angeles. "If Justin Bieber is willing to voluntarily undergo a paternity test Ms. Yeater welcomes such cooperation and will be happy to resolve this issue in a less public manner. We call upon Justin Bieber and his attorneys to reach out to resolve this issue in a reasonable manner."

Yeater claims in court papers her roll-in-the-hay with the teen heartthrob was "brief, lasting only approximately 30 seconds," backstage at the Staples Center following an October 2010 show. She added Bieber "was clearly embarrassed about how the sex did not last very long.” The tryst, she claims, produced her son Tristyn Anthony Markhouse Yeater, who was born on July 6.
Celebrities / Lady Gaga Launch An Anti-bullying Foundation - Born This Way Foundation by baskemms: 3:42pm On Nov 03, 2011
Lady Gaga has always made it her mission to empower her little monsters. On Wednesday (November 2), Mother Monster announced she's launching the Born This Way Foundation, which aims to further inspire young people.

The pop superstar is even getting some help from her very own Mother Monster, Cynthia Germanotta. "My mother and I have initiated a passion project. We call it the Born This Way Foundation," Gaga said in a statement about the foundation, which takes its name from her hit single and album. "Together we hope to establish a standard of Bravery and Kindness, as well as a community worldwide that protects and nurtures others in the face of bullying and abandonment."

The foundation will work with a number of partners, including the John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the California Endowment and the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. According to the statement, the foundation will focus on "youth empowerment and equality by addressing issues like self-confidence, well-being, anti-bullying, mentoring and career development and will utilize digital mobilization as one of the means to create positive change."

Gaga has been a leader in shedding a light on the issue of bullying. She met with President Obama at a fundraiser in September to talk about the bullying epidemic, after she was touched in particular by the suicide of bullied 14-year-old Jamey Rodemeyer.

"The past days I've spent reflecting, crying, and yelling," she tweeted when news of the teen's death broke in September. "I have so much anger. It is hard to feel love when cruelty takes someone's life." She went on to post Rodemeyer's "It Gets Better" video, urging that bullying "must become illegal. It is a hate crime."
Celebrities / Popular Yoruba Actress, Bimbo Akinsanya On Trial For Murder Attempt by baskemms: 3:16pm On Nov 03, 2011
Popular Yoruba movie star, Bimbo Akinsanya, has been arrested and arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court over alleged conspiracy to murder Rev. Pat Ogechi Dennah.

Bimbo and others now at large, were alleged to have on 28 October 2011 at 20, Samuel Street, Akowonjo, Egbeda, a suburb of Lagos, southwest Nigeria, conspired to commit felony by wounding Rev. Dennah. The police prosecutor, Barth Nwokedi in the two-count charge brought against the defendant, alleged that Bimbo pointed Rev. Dennah to a yet to be identified boy to kill her.

He added that the boy, who is now at large, shot at Rev. Dennah but only wounded her on her left shoulder. The alleged offence allegedly committed by the actress is punishable under section 338 and 516 of the criminal code, cap C17, vol 11, laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

One of the charges reads: “ That you, Bimbo Akinsanya and others now at large on 28 October, 2011 at about 2030hrs at No. 20, Samuel Street, Akowonjo, Egbeda, Lagos, in the Lagos magisterial district, did point Rev. Pat Ogechi Dennah to a boy yet to be identified, to kill her and the said boy shot her with a gun and wounded her on her left shoulder and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 338 of the criminal code cap C17 Vol. 11 laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2003.”

When the charges were read out to Bimbo, she pleaded not guilty to all the allegations. She was subsequently granted bail by the presiding magistrate, Mr A.O. Isaac in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties who must be resident in Lagos.

The matter has been adjourned till 30 November, 2011 for trial.

ASPHYXIATION FROM BRAZILIAN BLOWDRY
One of the key ingredients in the straightening treatment dubbed the Brazilian, or permanent, blowdry was formaldehyde.

Despite restrictions on the amount of the chemical that can be used, and new formaldehyde-free formulations, unscrupulous firms are still selling products that can cause breathing difficulties and other unpleasant side-effects. Karen Dandy owns a hair salon in West Sussex. Twice last year, she allowed a rep to demonstrate a treatment.

Both times, as the hair was heated with straighteners, everyone began to suffer headaches, nausea and stinging eyes and throats. ‘It obviously wasn’t safe,’ she says. Some salon owners are now suing the companies responsible claiming their health has been put at risk.

SKIN CANCER FROM MANICURE LAMPS
We all know baking our bodies on sunbeds increases skin cancer risks, but few would think the miniature UV lamps used to harden fake nails could carry the same risk.
Although the UV dose is tiny, dermatologist Dr Nick Lowe suggests letting your nails dry naturally. ‘UV is responsible for most skin cancers, but also ages the skin,’ he says.

Nairaland / General / 79-year-old Woman Leaves Hotel Suite After 10 Years by baskemms: 10:29am On Nov 03, 2011
It may have taken her 10 years, but an American septuagenarian is finally ready to move out of her hotel suite.

Joy Bricker, 79, turned her 46sqm Towne Place Suites by Marriott, in Virginia, into a home. She checked in on August 4, 2001, and became the longest extended-stay guest any Marriott hotel had seen. Osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis have forced the former pilot - who began her professional career at 50, including a stint at the White House - to move in with her daughter in New York.

"The death of her husband, Glenn, from cancer gave her no pause in returning to work in 2001, which landed her at the Towne Place Suites,". Mrs Bricker brought in a chair from her Florida condo and framed photos of family to make the hotel suite more homely.

Extended hotel stays were not unusual, Towne Place Suites general manager Carla Berberich said. "For less than the price of many apartment rentals in the Washington metro area (roughly $US1500-$US1700 ($1400-$1600) a month) Bricker's room was supplied with wi-fi, which fuelled her hours of daily online research and reading a day, and the added benefit of daily room cleaning, and round-the-clock security. Though she says she still makes her bed each day, though not nearly as well,".

"Bricker has become a pillar of the transient, makeshift community. She's made friends of staff and short-term neighbours alike. Next door, her new Kuwaiti friend brings traditional meals of spiced stew for them to share. "It was this family of hotel staff who came to her aid when, last year, a late-night fall landed her in the hospital with a broken hip.

"General manager Bobby Bellinger was the first person Bricker saw when she awoke in her hospital bed."
