SKCOgbonnia:
Why Nigeria’s Rich and Famous Should Support Peter Obi

By SKC Ogbonnia --Former APC Presidential Aspirant

When I was aspiring to become president, a veteran journalist asked me why I decided to cast aside my good life in America and muddle with the murky waters of Nigerian politics. The gentleman appeared perplexed when I answered that the sacrifice was “for me.” I would further explain that a core part of my vision in life is to promote public welfare that can guarantee my individual welfare. I reasoned that I am as good as my immediate environment. I reminded him that like many, including the big men, I am most at home in my hometown; in this case, Ugbo, a serene hilltop habitat in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State. Like many Nigerian communities, my hometown sparkles with magnificent mansions and celestial places of worship but lacks standard public amenities.

Yes, I can equally afford quality medical care and quality education for my family members overseas, but it smacks stark ignorance to assume that such privilage would guarantee me peace of mind. That is, what happens if I or any close relation encounters serious medical emergency at any given hour of the day or night while in that small town that has no standard health facilities?

The answer to that question prompted my earlier piece: ‘Every Nigerian Blood Is On The Line.’ I was able to enumerate the fate of many prominent politicians who had lost their loved ones or encountered other serious health scares because of the unfortunate condition in their local environment. The list is long, including David Mark, Ike Ekweremadu, Nemadi Sambo, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Dame Patience Jonathan, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Lamidi Adedibu, Muhammadu Buhari, and Goodluck Jonathan, to name a few.

The exemplar with Jonathan, then a sitting president, best makes my case: His younger brother, Meni Jonathan, suddenly became ill on one fateful day at their hometown of Otuoke and needed urgent medical attention. But any notion of luck ought to have limitations. Hear Mr. Goodluck himself as he narrated the predicament in his own words: Meni “drove himself down to Yenagoa to board the chopper to Abuja. He got to Abuja that Saturday and was admitted in hospital. The following Monday, his breathing changed. I said, let us make arrangement to get him out—to let him get treatment outside. So, an arrangement was being made. Unfortunately, the following day he had cardiac arrest and inflamed heart at the State House Clinic.” Sadly, despite the expedient excellencies, a president’s brother, like an ordinary Nigerian, gave up the ghost in November 2012 at the capital city of Abuja.

The gist of this plea mirrors a famous quotation by an American president, John F. Kennedy: “If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.”

Aliko Dangote needs no introduction. Touted as the richest black man, he is also widely admired for a proclivity to showcase Nigeria at any given chance. It was not surprising therefore that instead of hosting a world class wedding for his beloved daughter in some of the choicest destinations in a foreign land, he brought it home along with a bevy of guests drawn from the who-is-who in both the political and the corporate worlds. It also presented an opportunity for the Nigerian rich and famous to ostend their wealth along with expensive goodies, including the latest samples of private jets and lush cars. Yet, this grandiose show of affluence is common in country that has been established as the poverty capital of the world.

Bill Gate, the famous American billionaire, who deploys billions of his personal wealth to fight poverty in Africa, also graced the wedding of Mr. Dangote’s daughter. Though Mr. Gate appeared to appreciate the African hospitality, which is second to none, he could not reconcile the degree of ostentatious wealth with the degree of poverty in the land. He showed his disgust by leaving the big men with following words: “Nigeria will thrive when every Nigerian is able to thrive. If you invest in their health, education, and opportunities- the human capital we are talking about today, then they will lay the foundation for sustained prosperity.”

Of course, Mr. Gate told the gospel truth. But, as the eminent political historian, Bala Yusuf Usman, once noted, many highly placed Nigerians are some of the most ignorant, because they like to forget that politics should be about the common good of the society. Instead, many Nigerian rich and famous people typically collude to loot the funds budgeted for public projects, thereby denying basic opportunities to the ordinary people. But the realities are setting in.

The long years of elite impunity have led to mass poverty and, consequently, a level of insecurity never imagined in the land. The naked truth is that the masses are angry and cannot take it anymore. Today, no Nigerian—whether rich or poor—is safe anymore. These days, the rich and famous can no longer enjoy their wealth in the Nigerian space, as they would please. Even convoys of contingent of army and the police, which usually trail the big men, no longer stoke fear, let alone deterrence.

Further, if things remain any close to the current situation, the children of the rich and famous—who are being groomed overseas—may never come back home to inherit their riches after all. If the mass exploitation continues, as Bill Gate had warned the big men, their beloved businesses will not sustain.

The most proverbial yet is another quote from the same President Kennedy. The American appeared to have a country like Nigeria in mind when he stated that “Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.” The point is that, barring a radical change from the status quo, mass revolution is imminent in Nigeria. And, as recent events have shown, any “violent revolution” will not be a conflict between the tribes or between the Christians and Muslims, as some politicians would wish, the target are the ruling elite and their influential sympathizers.

The only solution is true change. The Nigerian presidential election of 2023 is a make-or-mar for that elusive change. Of the candidates seeking the presidency, only three have legitimate chances of victory, namely, Atiku Abubakar of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), and Ahmed Tinubu of All Progressives Congress (APC). So, is it Atiku that represents the change? How, and how can? Is it then Tinubu, the National Leader of the ruling APC, who roundly endorses those actions of the current government, as well as its functionaries that have combined to ruin Nigeria?

With every sense of modesty, unless one is unpatriotic and blinded by a timid clad of ethnic, religious or party sentiments, the choice in 2023 is a no brainer: Mr. Peter Obi stands out as the candidate most likely to bring us any semblance of change at this time in history. Moreover, the former Anambra governor is the choice of the Nigerian restless youths and, of course, the sole answer with the potential to avert an adverse revolution.

The youths have made a good choice. Unlike the presidential candidates of PDP and APC, Peter Obi is not only physically and mentally sound, but he also has the right set of visions, character, competence, and the capacity to rescue Nigeria and reposition her to path of honor. In short, no sane Nigerian would wish another absentee president like Umar Yar’Adua and Muhammadu Buhari, which the candidacies of the ageless Atiku and the ailing Tinubu clearly represent.

These stark realities compelled me to dump the candidate of my party to endorse the candidate of the masses in Peter Obi. It is incumbent upon the Nigeria’s elite, as well as the Nigerians in the Diaspora, to join the Obidient movement. This movement is the nonviolent alternative. It is the long-awaited democratic revolution that can save both the many Nigerians who are poor and the few who are rich.

ASUU President Dismisses Varsities Who Defy Strike As Quacks

Professor Osodeke said this on Thursday during an interview on Arise News.

“Kwara State University is not a member of ASUU, they’ve not joined, you can check. Osun State University was suspended from ASUU for misbehaviour, you can check. In LASU that you mentioned, we are in court with LASU because they sacked all our executives more than five years ago, so they were not part of this struggle.

“Ekiti State University… ASUU don’t run a University, the government have a right to say we have reopened, our members have the right to say that’s good for you, we are not teaching, we are on strike as it happened in Gombe State University, as it happened in Yobe State University, you can go and check as it happened in Kaduna State University so don’t cite those examples, they are irrelevant.”

“Talk about the issue, is Ibadan on strike, is UNN on strike, is ABU on strike, is BUK on strike, is Maiduguri on strike, is Lagos on strike, Let us talk about the important ones not those quacks.”

ASUU has been on strike since February 14, 2022.

EKSU, UNIOSUN, KASU react:

PRESS RELEASE

EKSU NOT A QUACK UNIVERSITY: ASUU PRESIDENT'S STATEMENT, RECKLESS

26th August, 2022

The attention of the Management of Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti (EKSU) has been drawn to the interview granted the Arise Television by the National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Emmanuel Osodeke where he mentioned some state-owned universities in Nigeria as quacks and irrelevant. In the same press interview with Dr. Reuben Abati, he listed some first generation universities as the ones that matter most in the ongoing struggle by ASUU.

The Management of EKSU views this denigrating remark about some universities, coming from the National President of ASUU as unfortunate, reckless and unwarranted.
Ekiti State University, Ado- Ekiti is currently the 14th best university in Nigeria out of about 200 universities (Federal, State & Private) and the 2nd best State University according to the recent Webometric ranking of universities.
Apart from the above, the university (EKSU) has nearly all its academic programmes accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and relevant professional regulatory bodies. The university is proud to have many top rated globally recognised academics, and its alumni are making waves both Nationally and Internationally. By the grace of God, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji , the Governor-elect of Ekiti State is an alumnus and a former lecturer in the University. Even in ASUU, a number of staff of our university had served and still serving in various capacities at zonal and national levels including but not limited to Professor Afolabi Popoola, Dr. Sikiru Eniola, Profs. Eddy Olanipekun, Ayan Adeleke and Olu-Olu Olufayo.

Therefore, categorizing EKSU as among the quack and irrelevant universities is a testimony to the fact that the ASUU President is probably uninformed and/or is bereft of ideas. This arrant nonsense coming from Comrade Osodeke is totally unacceptable and condemnable.

The Management calls on Professor Osodeke to toe the path of honour by retracting the provocative remark and tender an unreserved apology without further delay.

ASUU President a careless talker, should get educated – UNIOSUN VC replies Osodeke’s comment calling universities quack

The Vice-Chancellor, Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye reacting:

“ASUU President should go and check my profile, I cannot preside on quack university. He has expressed his opinion and that is his, the University he teaches does not have our achievements.

“He was here this year and commended the quality of what he saw here, the infrastructure, only a few universities. Osun state university takes very serious exceptions for having mentioned the institution as a quack university.

“He shouldn’t talk about what he doesn’t know if he wants to continue being a true professor. A true professor finds facts and bases of whatever they say, he should get educated, I challenge him to get educated.

“Referring UNIOSUN as a quack university is a careless statement and not expected from ASUU President who is a professor; who must not make a statement without facts.” the VC said.

RE: A STATEMENT BY ASUU NATIONAL PRESIDENT DESCRIBING KASU AND OTHER STATE-OWNED UNIVERSITIES AS QUACKS

The whole world was taken aback by the unguided, misleading and derogatory statement by the ASUU National President, Prof. Victor Emmanuel Osodeke during an interview with Arise TV on Friday, 26th August, 2022 in which he irresponsibly referred to some State-Owned Universities in Nigeria including Kaduna State University as quacks.

It is obvious that by such a statement, ASUU, represented by the unguarded vituperatons of its chosen President, is not actually struggling for a better educational system in Nigeria but for personal and irrespondible aggrandisement. One may wonder whether the Professor of Soil Science really understands what the word quack represents. Quack means a person who dishonestly claims to have knowledge and skill in some field with little or no foundation, as better exemplified by professionals.

For the benefit of hindsight, KASU is a new generation University and the second most-sought State-Owned University as well as the fastest growing in Nigeria, which was established 18 years ago with eminent scholars like Prof. Idris A. Abdulkadir, OFR and Prof. Abubakar A. Rasheed, MFR as the pioneer Council members. These scholars-administrators made sure that the appointments of qualified Lecturers was never compromised. The foundation and ethical determination to sustain same has remained the basic principle of engaging academic & non-academic staff.

By the foregoing, the general public may wish to note as follows:
1. KASU is recognised by NUC as a standard University.
2. KASU has some of the best brains that is competing favourably with their counterparts around the globe. The world No 4 best polymer chemist is in KASU.
3. Lecturers in KASU have attracted grants both locally and internationally and are highly rated.
4. KASU graduates are rated among the best in the world and enjoying scholarships from different parts of the country and the globe.
5. KASU has members in ASUU, and it is unfortunate if the ASUU President is saying that they are quacks, while enjoying monthly check-off dues from their salaries. Does this not gives good reason for every reasonable academic staff in the University to pull out from the Union for this labeling and stereotyping?

I like to mention here that the highest stage of irresponsibility is insulting fellow colleagues in the academia. I thought leadership in the academia is about mutual respect and mentoring while also living by good example which the ASUU National finds it too tasking? The ASUU President was a bigot for neither mentioning Ambrose Alli University, where he came from which has pulled out from the strike long before KASU Management decided to resume academic activities in spite of the strike, nor did he refer to his own University as quack.

By resuming academic activities as our good conscience in KASU dictates, should never be a reason for us to be insulted and stereotyped. After all, ASUU claimed to be on strike for:
* Rejecting IPPIS for UTAS (KASU has nothing to do with how other employees are paid in a country where education is in the concurrent list)
* Renegotiate the 2009 agreement (KASU Governing Council informed lecturers they shouldn't worry that after negotiation between FG & ASUU led by its loquacious President, it'll look into how to implement the agreement without encumbrances)
* Release funds to revitalize the infrastructure of the Universities (release of funds is being determined by the economy and income of government and not by any strike action)
*: Pay outstanding EAA to date (Kaduna State has paid far more to its lecturers the EEA than any FG University did to its own Universities)
* Release of the White Paper on Visitation Panels (This has nothing to do with State universities & KASU should not stunt its progress in a protracted strike that is becoming unreasonably insensitive)
Lest i forget, when ASUU in KASU joined the strike in 2019 and govt paid the 40% salary for work done for the month, ASUU National did virtually nothing positive beyond ranting so that the outstanding 60% has not been paid till date. If someone thinks the National President of ASUU can go on strike because of this, is only joking!!!
Let me use this medium to call on Academic staff on strike in KASU to reason and be more concerned with their University and people than the irritating attitude of their irrational leader that label's them as Quacks.

Best wishes.

Was it your entitlement to be a Presidential candidate that you could not accept defeat in PDP, so you ran out at the 11th hour to go secure it elsewhere without prior work for that party?

If Character is being discussed, would you be remembered positively or negatively as that political prostitute who promised never to leave APGA and that leaving APGA would mean leaving politics?

What is your Capacity with your poor academic record and your inability to grow the economy of Anambra state?

If Commitment was paramount, would you depart APGA and also depart PDP that gave you a national platform in 2019?

Rather than clap for a liar and desperate politician, ask him questions and see how he will begin to slow down on the fancy talk that is belied by his own contrary actions.

NYD2022: Charles Boy, Dr. Utchay Odims Set for 'Nigerian Youth Decide' With Presidential Candidates, Meet Peter Obi

All is now set for the long awaited Nigerian Youth Decide conference slated to take place October 1, 2022 at Sheraton Hotels Abuja.

The event is being organised by UN Ambassador of Peace, Dr. Utchay Odims a major youth influencer in Nigeria. He along with his team has met with former governor of Anambra state and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi and others.

The "Nigeria youth decide" is expected to have in attendance All Progressives Congress, APC Bola Tinubu, his PDP counterpart, Atiku Abubakar, NNPP's Musa Kwankwaso, activist Charles Oputa popularly known as Charley Boy, Femi Kuti and others.

Nigerian Youth Decide follows a stakeholders meeting which took place recently where major issues were discussed on how the Nigerian youths should take their future into their hands.

Speaking at the official flag off of the campaign, co-convener, Dr utchay who spoke on Wazobia TV lagos along with Charley Boy aka Area Fada said time has come for the youths to take their destiny in their hands and stop seating on the fence or taking the back seat.

According to Dr. Utchay, the stakeholders meeting x-rayed youth inclusion, state of the nation, growing insecurity, poverty, lack of employment, poor productivity and others.

"The Nigerian Youths Decide would be a historical moment where we are going to have presidential candidates in attendance, they will listen to young people, activists and they will listen to what the people want and sign a social contract with the people.

"It is already gathering momentum across board and it will be a golden opportunity for us to chart new frontiers for our future.

"Presidential candidates are expected to be in attendance, technocrats, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders" he said.

Dr. Odims therefore called for active participation, urging youths not to miss it. Millions of youths both in-person and virtually are expected to participate.

According to him, this will save the young people from mortgaging their future and that of generations to come.

Imo State One-Million-Man March For Peter Obi kicked off this morning in Imo State.
Where are the one million people here? Yeye people! Obi is going nowhere. Even they find it difficult to gather million of people for him in their zone. A wise person knows that is a loser. Why suffering for nothing

He was spotted by the Traders and almost Lynched if not the timely intervention of the Nigeria police force
Can you imagine. When we say Igbo is not ready for Presidency, they will be fighting. U can't get power through this behavior. North and other regions cannot trust Igbo with power. How can you trust people of high sentiments, bitterness, arrogance and violence with power. If they get presidential power, I swear, they will bring down Nigeria. Why fighting the man? He is a citizen and has right to any religion or political party. Very aggressive people.
Muslims should wake up. Igbo's have instigated Christians Igbo's against u.

It is not a new thing. Continue burning, it is opposition's work. No party has it all. Some bad belle oppositions will always find ways to bring APC down. Although, I'm supporting Tinubu and I don't want to say anything about d platform that flies him

Don't worry Keyamo. The major sponsors and promoters are Nnmadi KANU's boys. We were surprised to see them destroying our public infrastructures in Yoruba land. We just want to tell them to go back to Igbo land to destroy everything there.
