TravelThe Safest Seats Are At The Back Of The Plane And Other Surprising Facts by bayooz(op): 7:38am On Oct 04, 2013
Flying is still among the safest ways to travel, though: Your chances of dying in a plane crash are about 11 million to 1. That laudable safety record is only so much comfort when you're boarding an airplane, though, especially after a high-profile crash. Here are six other tips and facts that can help make your flight a bit safer — or at least feel that way:
1. Korean pilots rank among the best-trained in the world
Lots of what you've read about the Asiana crash is wrong, says longtime commercial pilot Patrick Smith at Slate.
First, everyone is making too much of the Korean pilot's relative inexperience flying a Boeing 777. "To me it's a red herring," says Smith. "Pilots transition from aircraft type to aircraft type all the time," and no major-airline pilot takes the control of a new type of jet without a rigorous, often weeks-long training regimen, including "classroom training as well as hands-on instruction in both cockpit mock-up trainers and full-motion simulators."
Worse, people are already starting to murmur about Korean airlines' "checkered past" when it comes to air safety.
2. The safest seats are (usually) at the back of the plane
The rear seats of a commercial jetliner are annoying — cramped, near the lavatory, and you're the last one off the plane. But according to a 2007 Popular Mechanics analysis, those seats are also statistically the safest ones on the plane. The magazine studied every commercial-airline crash since 1973, looking at who died and where they were sitting. In 11 of the 20 crashes, rear-seat passengers fared much better; in five, the front-seat passengers had better luck; three were tossups; and the fourth had no seating data.
In all, back-seaters had a 40 percent better chance of surviving a crash, Popular Mechanics found. A 2012 experiment — researchers crashed a Boeing 727 carrying camera-equipped crash-test dummies into the Mexican desert — backed that up, says the Los Angeles Times' Paul Whitefield. Every first-class passenger would have died, while 78 percent of passengers in the rear of the plane would have survived.
3. Most planes crash during the first three and last eight minutes of the flight
If you want to increase your odds of surviving, no matter where you're sitting, "stay sober, hold off on your nap, and don't bury your face in a book, and follow the plus three/minus eight rule," says Anil Polat at travel site foXnoMad. That's based on the findings of FAA plane-crash expert David Palmerton, who notes that about 80 percent of crashes occur in the first three minutes of a flight and the last eight minutes. You're best-laid "crash plan" won't save you if you're snoozing at the wrong time.
4. You have about 90 seconds to exit a burning airplane
That minute and a half is called "the golden time," says the site How Stuff Works, because people who get out of a downed aircraft in that period have the greatest chance of survival. In those 90 seconds, a burning "airplane cabin can reach temperatures that will melt human skin," says foXnoMad's Polat. You're also better off wearing cotton or other non-synthetic — non-melting — clothes, and keeping your shoes on.
A related point is the "five-row rule," airplane-crash survival expert Ben Sherwood tells TIME. British academic Ed Galea studied more than 100 plane crashes and found that "survivors usually move an average of five rows before they can get off a burning aircraft. That's the cutoff," Sherwood adds. If you're sitting more than five rows away from an exit row — any exit row — your chances of surviving the crash are "greatly reduced."
5. Really: Don't bring your overhead luggage on your escape
The passengers on the Asiana flight — especially in first class — are getting a lot of gruff for bringing their carry-on bags with them when they left the wrecked 777. Some passengers are defending their decision, saying their part of the cabin was exiting the aircraft in an orderly fashion, and they needed their passports and cash
6.People can survive midair explosions, with a little swamp and lots of luck
Most of the safety tips you'll read assume your flight crashed on the runway, water, or some other terrestrial surface. But Popular Mechanics says that if your airplane explodes at 35,000 feet in the air, you still have a small chance to survive. It will take you about three minutes to hit the ground, and "you'll probably pass out for the first minute, then wake up and have just enough time to figure out where to land," says How Stuff Works.
If you have a choice, don't aim for water — it's hard, like concrete. Your best bet for survival is actually swampland, though a snowbank is good, too. And don't tuck up into a ball: The best position for falling to earth is face-down, arms and legs stretched out like a skydiver, maximizing the wind resistance to slow your descent as much as possible.

PoliticsIs General Election 2014 Or 2015??? by bayooz(op): 6:10pm On Sep 29, 2013
In recent times there have been feverish noise and preparations for '2015' general election. However, if we are to go by the new electoral laws in Nigeria, the general election into various state and federal political offices is to come up by November 2014 which is 6 months space for litigations before swearing in on May 29 2015.
I want clarification on this from Nairalanders.

Car TalkRe: Your Experience With Buying A Nigerian Used Car by bayooz(m): 11:55am On May 26, 2013
So many factors are involved in buying Nigerian used car. Most importantly, reason for sale, the maintenance history and condition of the car involved. Honesty of the vendor on current status of the car matters as well. I bought a 1999 Camry and maintained it well and replaced all faulty parts from time to time. About 5 people fought to buy it. i sold the car for #600k just two weeks ago after 2 and a half year of use. Unfortunately, very few Nigerians do take well care of themselves never to talk of cars.
Best of luck. Be it tokunbo or Nigerian used cars. grin
AutosUs-autobuy: Dealer Of Dealers Delivers 2005 GX470 by bayooz(op): 8:25am On May 02, 2013
I started nursing the ambition of upgrading to GX470 since 2012 if some of you followed my thread.
Early this year, after keeping tab on the profile and activities on dealers on this great website, I settle for Mr. Kunle Ayanjoke of us-autobuy (formerly kunleautos).
Between January and April we exchanged more than 50 mails day and night. Am a perfectionist. I wanted 2005 GX470 with Sports package which is rare across States. I asked so many questions to which he patiently and professionally answered all. Kunle sent more than 15 inventories of 2005 GX470 that fall within my specifications until am satisfied and eventually settled for one from Colorado towards the end of February. Without hesitation, I paid for the SUV and he started the transaction and logistics entailed to get the vehicle to Lagos.
At last, here are the pictures of the GX he delivered this week. grin grin grin

Car TalkRe: Please Advice Me by bayooz(m): 7:56am On Mar 26, 2013
2001 Camry is a great fuel efficient car. The major problem is the low clearance. Take your car to a good mechanic. Let them place it on a ramp and check below it. The catalytic converter or some part of the exhaust pipe might have been damaged which may need replacement. Also, there may be a need to change the oxygen sensor on the manifold.
i did this to my own model just last week and the rich fuel burning stopped. From ibadan to ikeja lagos back to ibadan i usually used half a tank or 35 litres.
Car TalkOverview Of Airbags by bayooz(op): 6:02pm On Mar 21, 2013
This is a sensor used to trigger an airbag. At impact the cylinder rolls out against the roller spring to close the electrical contact and set off the bag.

• Airbags are passive restraint systems. Passive systems are those which do not require the user to do anything in order to be protected. In contrast, most seatbelts are active systems, the user must put them on. Because airbags, as passive restraints, are currently required to protect occupants who are not belted up, they are large and powerful.

• Small adults and children are especially vulnerable to airbag injuries, although potentially anyone can be injured with some systems if they are close enough to the bag when it deploys. In general, protected occupants should be as far away as possible from strike surfaces in the vehicle's interior - including the airbag- regardless of the type of protection system in use. Belted occupants without airbags should also be as far from the dash and steering wheel as interior packaging and ergonometrics allow. It is not clear that manufacturers have provided adequate warning on this point. Air bags have killed scores of people so far while they are credited with saving over 1100 lives in the past ten years.

• You want to run into the airbag, you don't want the airbag to run into you. This generally means sitting back about 12" from the airbag housing although the exact distance required can be hard to determine without knowing the size of the deployed bag and the bag's deployment characteristics.

• Airbags deploy in about 0.06 seconds at speeds of over 200 mph. They must be this quick because the typical automobile collision lasts about 0.125 seconds and unprotected occupants will hit the the vehicle's interior before the primary impact is over. That is, the second collision occurs while the first collision is still going on. Deployment is effected by a gas generator which usually employs the combustion of sodium azide to produce the volume of gas required. Deployment is essentially the result of a small, contained explosion.

• The sensor, or more likely, the sensor in conjunction with a computer, decides whether or not to deploy the bag based on the severity of the accident. The usual deployment algorithm involves in effect only the velocity change of the vehicle although more complicated algorithms are being incorporated into newer systems.

• Airbags first appeared in the early 1970's in GM and Ford test fleets, widespread introduction did not take place until Chrysler introduced them into its American made vehicles in 1989 as a result of government and consumer group pressure. They were delayed because of cost and competitiveness objections raised by vehicle manufactures.
