Lagosians are tired of ACN -PDP The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has accused the Action Congress of Nigeria, Lagos chapter, of failing the people of the state. Chairman of Lagos state PDP, Mr. Olatunji Shelle, said this while addressing journalists at the state secretariat in Lagos, on Monday. Shelle said the ACN was a disappointment to the people. He added that the PDP was determined to make a difference in Lagos during the forthcoming 2015 elections, which he described as "a date with history." The chairman said the people would be looking up to the PDP as an alternative because they had been long tired of the policies the ACN-led government, had been implementing in the state. He said, "The Lagos PDP would change the tide of electoral performance in 2015, and we are resolute to achieving this goal. Actually, no one should be surprised about this because we have the people looking up to us as a viable alternative. "The people had consistently said they were tired of the ACN government in the state and we certainly have a date with history in 2015. Opinion poll, as at today, indicates that the ACN government in Lagos State has been a disappointment to the people. "For a long time now, the ACN government has made life unbearable for Lagosians through obnoxious and anti- people policies, which have pauperised the vast majority of the people. "We sympathise with the feelings and frustration of the poor citizens of Lagos as they continually suffer trauma and hardship of all sorts under the ACN government in Lagos State." Suspected Boko Haram members at the weekend shot dead more than 20 civilians in northern Borno State, a military spokesman said yesterday. “The suspected sect members came armed and fired sporadic shots that killed over 20 innocent civilians,” Lt. Haruna Mohammed Sani, spokesman for the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) said. The violence took place on Saturday in Dawashe village, the army lieutenant said in a statement. He said men from the Civilian Joint Task Force, a vigilance group formed in Boko Haram’s bastion Maiduguri, to combat the Islamist gunmen who have been terrorising the region for many years, entered Dawashe to search for suspects. The suspected Boko Haram members subsequently opened fire in the village, the spokesman said, adding that the 20 victims were mostly fishermen and traders. Sani said a dozen other civilians sustained gunshot wounds during the incident but provided no information on casualties among the belligerents. The toll and circumstances of the incident could not be immediately verified independently. Among those killed were five members of the “Civilian JTF” who were on a manhunt for Boko Haram in Mainok town, 58km west of Maiduguri. The attack on the “Civilian JTF” was the first since the group took courage to hunt down Boko Haram in the state in the last two months. It was also confirmed that a heavily armed Quick Reaction Squad from MNJTF had been deployed to ensure the safety of lives and property in the area. Dawashi, Daban-Masara and Malan karanti villages are believed to be the stronghold of the insurgent. The MNJTF said: “As part of the excellent Civil-Military Relations and humanitarian gesture demonstrated by Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), a dozen of Boko Haram victims affected by the attack in Dawashe District of Kukawa Local Government, got medical treatment in the Headquarters Field Ambulance in Baga town”. Some members of the “Civilian JTF” also confirmed to reporters in Maiduguri that five of their members who were killed are from Ajilari, Ngomari Airport and Bulumkutu Ward of Maiduguri Metropolitan. A member, Aliko Musa said: “it was a huge loss to us, some of our brave colleagues were killed yesterday by the outlawed Boko Haram; they paid the supreme price when we visited Mainok village in search of the terrorists but we shall not relent”, he added. Spokesman for the JTF, Lt Col Sagir Musa however denied the figure even as he confirmed the Mainok attack. According to him, only one of the Youth Volunteers died while another sustained injuries. The MNJTF, a joint military force set up in 1998 to combat border crimes, consists of troops from Nigeria, Chad and Niger. Source: thenationonlineng.net/new/boko-haram-kills-20/

Anxiety has enveloped Ajakurama in Ovia South West Local Government of Edo State as operatives of the Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta stormed the community demanding the whereabouts of a repentant militant, Ojuemi Perediseghabofa. The security operatives, who reportedly stormed the community at about 1am on July 18, 2013, took away Perediseghabofa's wife when they could not locate the ex-militant. Counsel for the ex-militant, Mr. Famous Maka, stated this in a petition to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika. In the petition obtained on Sunday, Maka said the Ajakurama people had been in fear since the soldiers visited the community and left behind a message that they would again storm the area if the ex-militant did not report to their base at Ajide. Maka, who urged the Army chief to stop any further invasion of the community, said the JTF operatives could have used the Amnesty Office to invite the ex-militant for interrogation if he did anything wrong. He said, "During this unexpected invasion, virtually all Ajakurama people slept in the bush. Consequently, one Mr. Bewo Itiphan died due to psychological shock. "All the ex-militant's rooms were searched, the window glass were shattered and his 32 inches flat screen television and many other things destroyed. Before they left the community, they left a warning that if the community, within 24 hours, does not produce the ex- militant, they will burn down the community. "Sir, what is baffling in the whole matter is that the ex- militant leader is one of the persons that embraced the Federal Government Amnesty programme. He can be officially invited by any government agencies to answer any allegation against him." Meanwhile, Maka said the soldiers later released the ex- militant's wife. When our correspondent contacted the Public Relations Officer in charge of the '4' Brigade Benin, Captain Rosalyn Managbe, she said she was not aware of the invasion. The members of the Christian Association of Nigerian- Americans (CANAN) has embarked on a rally in the United States of America to demand that the Boko Haram group be designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO). The members, who were led by the Chairman of the association, Pastor James Fadele, and its Executive Director, Mr Laolu Akande, embarked on the rally outside the White House in Washington. The group wondered why the United State’s State Department had refused to pronounce the entire Boko Haram as a terrorist group instead of referring only to its leader. Earlier at a news conference held at the National Press Club, the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, also faulted the U.S. government over its delay to classify the group as terrorist body. Oritsejafor added that in addition to non-recognition of the plight of Nigerians, the U.S. has not offered humanitarian assistance to victims of Boko Haram. “America’s ambivalence over the terrorist challenges in Nigeria is a stunning betrayal. After 9/11, Nigeria was amongst nations that cooperated with global efforts on tracing terrorist financing to the point that a designated foreign financier was uncovered running a cereal factory in Northern Nigeria. “FTO designation will kick off the tracking of terror- financing and arms shipments in Nigeria and elsewhere. “It is now one year since I testified before the U.S. Congress and still the U.S. has not designated Boko Haram a foreign terrorist organisation even though it has killed citizens of over a dozen of countries and attacked American citizens too. “Every week, I get text messages that a church has been burnt or that a pastor has just been murdered or that Christians were randomly rounded up on a roadside and summarily executed,” he said. He also pleaded with rich churches in the country to come to the aid of victims of Boko Haram insurgency as well as in supporting CAN financially. Edo state governor Adams Oshiomhole has warned that there is so much evil in the land that he currently feels like going on protest against the system. He spoke when the national executive members of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) visited him in Benin yesterday. “Right now many of us are worried about the goings on in the country, I cannot stage a protest now because I will be misunderstood, but my heart is in the mood of protesting, so that my own children will not inherit the iniquities of the evil we see every day”, he said. He added, “We are in very challenging times and we are buffeted with a good number of elite entrusted with state powers at various levels privatising those powers and behaving as if they are gods and dealing ruthlessly with those who are powerless and applying the resources in a manner that is offensive to the poor.” Oshiomhole said Nigeria is treading a dangerous ground that might threaten the foundation of its existence. “Things happening around, for me, represent very dangerous signals. There are people who do not wish the country well and unfortunately there are men and women who cannot claim to have a future and messing up the future for everybody else. “It is the lot of the Christian community to speak out where it matters, so that those who are deaf can hear and those who are blind may have their sight restored so that together we will build a nation that is God fearing and where the people will benefit from the resources that God so generously endowed us with. “We need a lot of activism as we approach 2015, that a nation is not like a private enterprise, that only the people are permanent, leaders will necessary come and go and that is the promise of democracy, we need you to help all of us. “So I want CAN having shown courage, having spoken out even in the days of military dictatorship, now in a democracy, we need more of that courage.” He urged Christians to continue to pray for the continued existence of the nation, saying “it is the prayers of our Christian brothers and Muslim brothers that keep Nigeria going.” Earlier, CAN General-Secretary Rev Musa Asake, representing the President Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, said, “We in the CAN are happy with what you are doing in Edo State, our men and women continue to give us pleasant reports of you great support for the church and your delivery of democracy dividends and people oriented projects in Educatiion, Health, youth empowerment and infrastructural development.” Source: dailytrust.info/index.php/top-stories/1407-state-of-the-nation-i-feel-like-staging-protest-says-oshiomhole |

President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, on Tuesday said he would lead Nigerians to protest against the Senate resolution to amend Section 29 (4) (b) of the 1999 Constitution under which married underage girls are deemed to be adults. The association also frowned on the comment credited to former Governor of Zamfara State Ahmed Yerima that the proposal for the deletion of the section contravened Islamic Law. Oritsejafor, in a statement, described Yerima's argument as offensive, saying, "It presupposes that Nigeria, a secular state, is populated only by Muslims." The CAN President, who urged the Senate to revisit the child marriage issue, also called on Nigerians to reject the resolution which he described as provocative and dehumanising. He said, "By the grace of God, I will, personally mobilise Nigerians and lead the street protest against this oppressive and dehumanising resolution. Why would the Senate, after voting recoil, simply because of a point of order premised on religious basis? "We, Christians, also have Canon Law, which frowns on marriage of girls who are not of age. Christianity abhors such marriages. The protest will be soon. "Finally, I urge the Yerimas in the Senate to toe the path of the Holy Qur'an, which states that one who kills a person unjustly in effect has killed everyone and one who saves another has saved everyone. They should save these girls and Nigerians the agony of having their children married off at ages below 18 by unfavourable legislations." Oritsejafor noted that Yerima's latest comment would stir up another controversy in the country. Yerima as a governor introduced the controversial Sharia, the Islamic Legal code, in Zamfara State. According to Oritsejafor, people like Yerima are approaching Qur'anic teachings from extremes and disturbing the balance. "It makes me wonder the source of the emotions and thoughts that nurture them," he said. The CAN President said as a Senator, whose case of marrying a 13-year-old Egyptian girl was still fresh in the memory of Nigerians, Yerima should "only be seen and not heard in matters of this nature". He added, "If now Yerima is commenting on a case in which he has interest, it can only mean the action of a man frenziedly trying to get himself out of the hook through some undeserved legislations. I appeal to those individuals who have been educated along this line in the Senate not to use their rights as lawmakers to harm children below the age of 18, but to choose the interest of these children above their own. "These girls should be allowed to develop, individually because this resolution, if implemented, would hound girls below 18 years into marriages they know nothing about. This is only one dimension of this tragic resolution. "I feel that when individuals attain a certain way of thinking and understanding and reach certain status in life, they should be able to comprehend that it is necessary to adhere to conventions in line with best practices the world over and not harm other members of society, no matter their ages within the same society." The National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) yesterday accused President Goodluck Jonathan of being the brain behind the Rivers State crisis. It described Jonathan’s earlier denial of involvement in the crisis as false. NANS said: “President Goodluck Jonathan must stop distancing himself from the matter because, whether he likes it or not, he is vicariously involved in it. The direct involvement of the First Lady in the matter, which she publicly admitted to when 16 Bishops from the Southsouth paid her a visit at the Presidential Villa last week, implies Mr. President’s tacit involvement in it. Therefore, Mr. President cannot continue to feign ignorance or indifference in this sensitive matter.” According to a statement in Abuja by its Acting Senate President, Comrade John Shima, NANS gave the President and the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to resolve the crisis. Failure to heed to the ultimatum, the group said, “NANS shall be left with no option than to convene its next Senate Meeting at Port Harcourt, where it shall take a more decisive position and action on the Rivers State crisis”. “For the benefit of foresight, the action may include taking over the city of Abuja and paralysing all economic, social and political activities in the nation’s capital.” NANS demanded that “adequate security is provided for the Rivers State House of Assembly, so that the legislators can return to work”. “If that is done, then the majority will have their way and progress will be made, which is the true beauty of democracy. NANS called for “the immediate redeployment of the Rivers State Commissioner of Police (CP) Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu, who from every indication has gone political”. “Since he has clearly shown that he cannot work harmoniously with the governor, then the CP should be redeployed immediately from the state. NANS hereby declares a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government of Nigeria and all its relevant organs to resolve the crisis in Rivers State.” The statement added: “The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), in keeping up with its traditional obligations as the bastion of democracy and vanguard of the oppressed and downtrodden, hereby condemns in its entirety, the show of ignominy unfolding in Rivers State, which culminated in the ferocious disruption of proceedings at the State’s House of Assembly on Tuesday 9th July, 2013. “We are, however, not oblivious of the fact that the festering crisis in the state has its roots in the acrimonious quest by the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, to practically dictate to the ‘obstinate’ Executive Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, how he should run certain affairs in Rivers State. “Even though President Goodluck Jonathan can also not be said to be inculpable in the matter, he is also a member of the PDP and from the neighbouring Bayelsa State. So, we actually hope that the PDP would use its internal mechanisms to bring this lingering problem to end. “We must bear in mind that the situation in Rivers State depicts a huge threat to the security of the state and, by extrapolation, the entire nation. The Executive Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, has since made public, his own feelings of insecurity. There were reports last week of the deployment of policemen to the Rivers State Government House and the Rivers State Liaison Office in Abuja respectively, without the knowledge and approval of the state governor. That action by the police authorities is highly condemnable. “Mr. President should not forget that his cardinal responsibility to the state and its citizens is the provision of security for human lives and properties. This includes the lives of state governors and other high-profile individuals. Governor Amaechi has publicly declared that he is not comfortable with the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu. We wonder why the Inspector-General of Police is reluctant to redeploy Mr. Mbu from the state. Mbu clearly gave a clue in an interview with a national television station that he works at cross-purposes with Governor Amaechi. “The President’s thumbprint is firmly embedded in the ongoing crisis in Rivers State. The mother of the wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Dame Patience, Mrs. Iwarioba, popularly called Sisi, died yesterday in a road crash. The accident occurred at Elele in Rivers State. She was on her way to neighbouring Bayelsa State. The accident happened around 4 pm, source said, adding that Mrs Iwarioba body was moved to Kpaima Mortuary on Elechi Beach, Mile One, Diobu, Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, around 6 pm, by the self-acclaimed “Speaker” of Rivers House of Assembly, Evans Bipi, accompanied by many policemen. Bipi, who represents Ogu/Bolo Constituency, is a former aide to the First Lady, who attended his marriage on June 15 at the St. Cyprian’s Anglican Church, Hospital Road, Port Harcourt, shortly after which she buried her grandfather at Okrika, during her 10-day visit to Rivers State. Dame Patience, an indigene of Okrika, the headquarters of Okrika Local Government Area in Rivers State, in Geneva, Switzerland, according to sources who said she was immediately contacted. Mrs. Jonathan expressed shock and she felt very bad over her mother’s death, according to a family source, who pleaded not to be named. Details of the accident were sketchy last night, but a security man at the gate of the Kpaima Mortuary, who declined to give his name, said many armed policemen accompanied a body to the private facility, presuming that the deceased might be a prominent person. The Rivers Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Dr. Kayode Olagunju, and the Rivers police spokesperson, Mrs. Angela Agabe, could not confirm the incident, stressing that they were yet to get the details from their officers and men at the scene of the accident. A source said last night that the late Mrs Iwarioba was Mrs Jonathan’s stepmother, but this could not be immediately confirmed.
