EducationAnambra University Shut Over Killing Of Female Student by bcomputer101(op): 12:55am On Jun 06, 2013
Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State on Wednesday ordered the closure of Anambra State University after students demonstration paralysed activities at the Igbariam campus of the university.

Students had gone on the streets on Wednesday morning after gunmen, suspected to be armed robbers, killed a female student the night before.

The students, who blocked the Igbariam – Awkuzu Road and the Enugu -Onitsha Expressway, accused the management of the institution of failing to provide adequate security for students.

They also called for on-campus accommodation for students, complete with water and power supply.

Governor Obi cut short his visits to mission hospitals and schools and rushed to Igbariam on hearing about the students’ demonstration.

He immediately ordered that the institution be closed when the students could not be controlled.

BusinessFirst Bank Shuts Operations Thursday, Reopens Monday by bcomputer101(op): 6:43am On Jun 05, 2013
Customers of First Bank Limited may find it difficult to carry out some banking transactions from Thursday to Monday due to the decision to shut down the bank’s branches nationwide during the period.

The shutdown, according to the bank, is to enable it upgrade its core banking application from Finacle 7 to Finacle 10, which will ensure easier and faster customer services and experience.

Our correspondent gathered that the decision to shut down operations in order to facilitate the migration to Finacle 10 would affect the bank’s over 700 branches nationwide.

Apart from all the branches being shut, Point of Sale transactions and transaction alerts by Short Message Service will not be possible during the period. In addition, all card services, except Visa prepaid card, will not be available via Quick Teller and the Web.

First Bank said in an explanatory note, “All transactions that will impact on the banking platform e.g. settlements, inter bank (RTGS, NEFT, FIP) inflows, will not be available.”

However, the bank said skeletal services would be available on its ATMs throughout the migration period until 5pm on Sunday, and would be restored at 6am on Monday.

Online banking services, according to the bank, will also be available until 5pm on Sunday and be restored at 6am on Monday, while its mobile money services will be available throughout the migration period.

The bank had notified its customers through SMS and email of the development and apologised for inconveniences that they might suffer as a result of the platform upgrade.

The Group Managing Director, First Bank, Mr. Bisi Onasanya, said in an open letter to the customers, “I write to thank you for your continuous patronage and inform you of our plan to upgrade our core banking application as part of the ongoing transformation of the bank.

“I am particularly excited at the prospect of this milestone as it represents the opportunity to significantly transform our service delivery to you in many respects, while also supporting our plans for the introduction of new and innovative products as we anticipate your every banking need.

“This is a major project and on account of the technical requirements, we regret that there will be some disruptions to our services for about three days, while the upgrade is ongoing.”

Onasanya said only intra-bank transactions would be available on the alternative channels while the upgrade was going on, adding that the clearing of customers’ might also be slightly delayed but that all investments due on any transaction within the period would only be terminated when all services were restored without affecting the value dates or the value of accrued interests on such investments.

However, the decision is causing anxiety among the customers of the bank, who complained that the planned shutdown would further compound the problems they had been coping with lately in accessing the institution’s services.

For instance, customers have been complaining of not being able to draw cash from the bank’s Automated Teller Machines for sometime now, while money transfers to other banks from First Bank branches have been difficult in the last two weeks.

When contacted, the spokesman of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Ugo Okoroafor, said he was not aware of the plans by the bank to close its branches and urged our correspondent to call back to enable him make enquiries.

However, subsequent calls and SMS sent to his mobile telephone line were unanswered as of 9.30pm when this report was put together.

CrimeBanker Sentenced To Death For Killing Wife by bcomputer101(op): 6:36am On Jun 05, 2013
An Abia State High Court has sentenced a banker, Mr. Theophilus Ajakaiye, to death by hanging for killing his wife, Theodora.

The convict allegedly murdered his wife on October 12, 2009 at Azumini Ndoki in the Ukwa Judicial Division of Abia.

The charge read, “The accused person is charged with one-count of murder contrary to Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Vol. 11, Cap. 30 Laws of Eastern Nigeria, 1963, applicable in Abia State.”

Until her death, Theodora was an employee of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc.

The legal battle between the deceased’s family and the accused began soon after the alleged killing until the judgment recently.

The Presiding Judge, Justice T.U. Uzokwe, said in his judgment that having heard from the accused person, learned counsel for the accused and the prosecuting counsel, the offence carried a mandatory sentence which is death.

He said the court had no power to reduce the sentence and that being the case, he had no option but to sentence the accused.

The judge said, “Though the accused was not seen killing the deceased, I find that the accumulated circumstantial facts found proved that the accused indeed murdered his wife, Theodora Ajakaiye.

“Suffice it to say that I find the accused guilty as charged and I convict him accordingly.”

The sentence read, “Theophilus Ajakaiye – The sentence of this court upon you is that you be hanged by the neck until you be dead and may the merciful Lord have mercy on your soul.”

In the allocutus, counsel for the accused pleaded for mercy on behalf of his client.

He said, “I thank the court for this well considered judgment. The accused has no criminal record. We plead for mercy. There are two children to the marriage and they have already lost their mother.”

It was learnt that the convict had yet to appeal against the judgment.

PoliticsBuhari’s 2015 Presidential Posters(PICTURE) Flood Abuja. NL, Your View On This. by bcomputer101(op):
Abuja residents woke up today (Monday) to see
colorful Gen,Muhammed Buhari 2015 campaign
posters on the platform of the yet to be registered All
Progressive Congress (APC), adorning strategic parts
of the federal capital territory.

The colorful posters have the picture of the retired
General who is among the arrow heads of the
opposition coalition in Nigeria.

The wording's of the posters were carefully chosen to
convey the message that the General is the favored
candidate for the presidency on the platform of the
APC come 2015.

The posters were strategically pasted along the
Ahmadu Bello Way, the Asokoro district, the Federal
secretariat down to Maitama with the following bold
messages, “2015:Here Comes The Savior For Nigeria,
GEN.Muhammed Buhari (APC Consensus Candidate
for 2015 presidential election)Support Buhari: The
only man for the Job.”

There was nearly a traffic gridlock along the Asokoro
Junction this morning as motorist and passers-by
made a slow stop to catch a glimpse of the colorful
posters of the General which is the first poster ever
on the APC platform and a clear signal that the
general and his foot soldiers are getting ready to
consolidate their strategy towards emerging the APC
presidential candidate come 2015.

The timing of the posters which is coming just a day
to the general meeting of the merging parties joint
committee meeting and few days to the expected
submission of the application of the merging parties
to INEC, has kept tongues wagging over the real
motive behind the campaign which has further
heightened the 2015 presidential election fever,
earlier ignited by the ruling party.

Reacting to the posters, some residents of Abuja
expressed surprise and mixed feelings, while some
described the emergence of the posters at this time
as a mark of desperation. And a lack of tactical depth on the part of the General and his supporters since the APC platform is not yet a registered political party.

However, supporters of the General sees nothing
wrong in the timing of the General for the
commencement of his awareness campaign but
noted that the posters may be the handiwork of
overzealous supporters who see nothing wrong in
fast-tracking the political awareness campaign of the General’s presidential bid.

PoliticsPDP Is A Dysfunctional Family –ACN by bcomputer101(op): 6:45pm On Jun 03, 2013
The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has
described the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a
big-for-nothing dysfunctional family that practises
political cannibalism, hence its spiralling descent
into ignominy.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Monday by its
National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed,
the party said, therefore, that anyone calling the PDP a
"big family, united in freedom" may be suffering from
hallucination.

It also said that in spite of its continuous dismissal of
the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a group of
strange bedfellows (a well-worn cliche that has now
lost its meaning), the PDP can only underrate the
merger at its own peril.

"A happy family needs no advertisement, because
people know a happy family when they see one. A
happy family needs not draw attention to itself
because happiness cannot be hidden. What the PDP is
mistaking for happiness if a form of manic disorder.

"As this vanishing family continues to sink, it has now
degenerated to consuming its own members for
survival. Nothing showed this more than the recent
election of the Nigerian Governors' Forum (NGF). Ever
seen a party that is at war because its member won an
election? Ever seen a family in which the father is
seeking to devour his own son for achieving success?

"Our sincere wish is that this sinking behemoth will
somehow survive till 2015 so it can receive the
drubbing of its life," ACN said.

The party said the truth of the matter is that the PDP is
pathologically afraid of the APC, even in its yet-to-be
registered form, hence the continuous campaign of
calumny and crude attacks on its leaders.
It however wondered why the PDP is spending the
time and energy that should have been focused on
mending its tattered umbrella to worry about whether
or not the merger will succeed or whether it will soon
be in disarray.

"There is some truth in the saying that anytime one
sees a 'no thoroughfare' sign, there is definitely a way
there. The PDP knows for sure that the coming into
being of the APC signals its death knell. That is why it
has been flailing aimlessly. But the die is cast.
Nigeria
needs to be rescued from these cannibals. No amount
of blackmail, abuse, attacks or whatever will deter the
patriots who have come together for just one purpose:
To rescue Nigeria.

"For those who will continue to denigrate this merger
or attack the patriots behind the merger, even when
there is no reason for it (after all democracy thrives on
plurality of opinion), we say, bring it on!" ACN said.
