Nigeria’s sovereignty threatened as Yar’Adua is feared ‘kidnapped’ Monday, 22 February 2010 01:26 Max Amuchie •FEC delegation cannot see Yar’Adua without Saudi king’s approval With the expected arrival of the six-man delegation from the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in Jeddah today to see President Umaru Yar’Adua at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre, Jeddah, there is growing concern in government circles that the situation of the president amounts to ‘kidnapping’ of Nigeria’s leader. In a divided FEC, Ahmed Yayale, secretary to the government and Dora Akunyili, information minister, are among those who believe that the true state of the president’s health should be made public in the interest of the country. Yayale is in the government delegation to see Yar’Adua. The team was scheduled to leave Abuja last night aboard a presidential jet armed with a letter from Acting President Goodluck Jonathan to King Fahd of Saudi Arabia. In the letter, the acting president thanked the Saudi monarch for playing host to Yar’Adua and told him about the intention of the FEC team to see the president in the hospital. The aspect of Jonathan’s letter that is raising concern among Nigerians is that Nigeria has to seek the permission of the Saudi king before any meeting with Yar’Adua can take place in the hospital. The FEC team is the fourth team from Nigeria that has gone to see Yar’Adua. The three previous teams left Jeddah at various times without seeing Yar’Adua. The first was the governors’ team led by Kwara State governor, Bukola Saraki. The second was the team of the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) led by its national chairman, Vincent Ogbulafor. The third team was the delegation of the House of Representatives, which met with the First Lady, Turai Yar’Adua. She reportedly told the lawmakers that only the Saudi monarch could okay any meeting with Yar’Adua. So far, the only people who have access to Yar’Adua are Turai; his chief security officer, Yusuf Tilde; his aide-de-camp, Mustapha Onoviveta and Nigeria’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Garba Aminci. Abike Dabiri, a federal lawmaker, told BusinessDay that the saddest aspect of Yar’Adua’s illness is that it is only the Saudi monarch that could give permission before anyone sees the president because he (Yar’Adua) is in the royal suite reserved only for the king’s guests. She said the implication is that Nigeria’s sovereignty now lies with the king of Saudi Arabia. Her view is echoed by Kayode Ajulo, an Abuja-based lawyer, who told BusinessDay that Yar’Adua symbolises Nigeria’s sovereignty, adding that in the hospital where he is admitted, Nigeria’s flag should be flying as a matter of convention. Ajulo said the question that should agitate Nigerians is whether Yar’Adua has been kidnapped by the Saudi authorities. He said Saudi Arabia might use Yar’Adua’s condition as a point of bargain considering that both countries are rivals in oil production. “When their (Saudi) prince was ill, he went to the US for medical attention. He has just returned. While he was in the US, there was daily briefing on his condition up to the time he returned to Saudi Arabia”, Ajulo said, noting that it meant the Saudis know that their medical system is not the best available. A government source told BusinessDay that Jonathan wants to be sure that Yar’Adua is getting the best medical attention that is possible. The source said if any group would see Yar’Adua it is the present FEC team because of the letter from Jonathan, adding that it would cause diplomatic row between the two countries if the Saudi monarch does not honour the letter from Nigeria’s acting president. http://www.businessdayonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=8639:nigerias-sovereignty-threatened-as-yaradua-is-feared-kidnapped&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=18 |
We Must Achieve 6,000 Megawatts – Jonathan Written by Golu Timothy, Abuja Sunday, 21 February 2010 19:27 Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan said yesterday that government’s dream to actualise 6,000 megawatts of electricity had not gone down the drain. He challenged relevant institutions to wake up and ensure the dream was met. To this end, Dr. Jonathan said government had set a daily target of one billion cubic feet of gas supply for the ministry of petroleum resources, so that complaints of gas shortage should not keep cropping up. A reliable top presidency source, who confided in reporters said, the acting president had tasked the ministry to ensure that the management of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), the Nigerian Gas Company (NGC), Shell, Chevron and other major gas producers in the country are compelled to provide the required quantity of dry gas. This, the source said, is to meet the target of 6,000 megawatts of electricity for the country. According to the source, "The Acting President is very unhappy with the ministry for its failure to generate gas to power the government’s 6,000 megawatts of electricity. He has directed that all the gas producers in the country must provide the one billion daily gas target to the power plants," the source said. Jonathan was visibly angry during last week’s meeting of the Presidential Steering Council on National Integrated Power Project (NIPP), when he directed the minister of petroleum resources, Dr. Rilwan Lukman, to summon all the gas producers in the country to a meeting to iron out the grey areas in the one billion gas daily supply arrangement. His approval of the appointment of an executive director to co-ordinate the operations of the Nigeria Independent Power Project, NIPP, is also, according to the source, another indication that he was dissatisfied with the progress so far made in the power sector. "I think the time has come for the government to do what is right. Any gas producer who tells Nigerians that it is shutting its plant because it wants to evacuate condensates or maintain pipelines without recourse to due process, should be sanctioned. There should be penalties for this kind of sabotage. We must stop this nonsense perpetrated by these companies. It is either they do business here or they don’t," the source added. Our correspondent gathered that due to the nonchalant attitude of the ministry and other stakeholders, the country only gets about 250 million gas supply, leaving a shortfall of 750 million. http://leadershipnigeria.com/index.php/news/headlines/12214-we-must-achieve-6000-megawatts--jonathan |

You have world support, Bush tells Jonathan By Elizabeth Archibong Nigeria’s Acting President, Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday evening in Abuja secured the support of the former President of the United States, George Bush who assured him of the world’s support in making his job a success. Mr. Bush and his entourage were in Nigeria for the ThisDay Nigeria at 50 awards. Mr Bush who visited Mr Jonathan at his Aguda House official residence in the presidential villa, congratulated his host, noting that though the circumstances that brought Mr Jonathan to office were unexpected, there is every chance that the Acting president will succeed. “Sometimes in life, the unexpected happens,” he said. The visit followed Saturday’s visit to Mr Jonathan by former prime minister of the United Kingdom, Tony Blair who had praised Mr. Jonathan for ‘wisely steering the ship of state amidst turbulence.’ At a closed door meeting later, Mr Blair had also promised the Acting President of UK support in resolving the Niger Delta crisis and the Power problems in the country. In his message, Mr Bush said, “We wish you all the best, even though we know it is not an easy job. With God’s grace and the support of your team, you will succeed.” The Acting President assured his guests about the commitment of the Federal Government to conduct a free and fair election in Nigeria in 2011. He said his government will work towards ensuring that the electoral process is transparent and reflects the wishes of the Nigerian people. “I can assure you that come 2011, Nigeria’s elections will be credible. We will do everything possible to overhaul the electoral process and leave a lasting legacy in our political history,” he said. We are not terrorists Mr Jonathan also used the occasion to call on the American government to consider de-listing Nigeria from countries of interest in the global war against terrorism. Incidentally, Mr Bush launched the global war on terror during his time as president of the United States of America. “Terrorism is alien to Nigeria,” Mr Jonathan said. “Nigeria and US are strategic partners for global peace and development.” He also thanked the US government for its concern over the health of President Umaru Yar’Adua who is currently undergoing treatment in a Saudi hospital. Mr Bush was accompanied on the trip by former US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice and US Ambassador to Nigeria, Robin Sanders. On the Nigerian side were the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ojo Maduekwe and his solid minerals counterpart, Diezeani Allison Maduekwe. Southern opposition The presidency at the weekend, went on the offensive by accusing a former south-south governor as the arrowhead of those opposed to Mr Jonathan’s ascension to the office of Acting President. The Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Acting President, Ima Niboro said the former governor, whom he did not name, was unhappy with the transfer of power to Mr Jonathan and has therefore joined other anti-Jonathan forces to rubbish the image of the Acting President. “The Presidency is aware that they have set aside a huge war chest in billions of naira to bring the Jonathan Acting Presidency to disrepute by any means possible,” he said, adding that those behind the planned attack had stored up sensitive documents collated from financial transactions of the Acting President from his days as the governor of Bayelsa State till date, and would be releasing the documents to the media on weekly basis. http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/News/National/5530270-147/you_have_world_support_bush_tells.csp |

It totally depends on what you want. Generally, if you are targetting home users, Windows is the only OS worth considering. For example, if you are building a game for money, in order to reach the widest audience, you wouldn't be doing a unix game. On the serverside (or enterprise) you can equally consider Windows, Linux and Unix; again, it would depend on what you want and the resources available to you. |
Pharoh:That technology has only just been introduced in Nigeria. Currently sims aren't registered. |
Alison-Madueke gets death threat By Toyosi Ogunseye, Published: Sunday, 21 Feb 2010 Further proofs that the emergence of Goodluck Jonathan as Acting President and the prolonged absence of ailing President Umaru Yar‘Adua may have created sharp divisions among ministers heightened on Saturday as the life of the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, has been threatened, SUNDAY PUNCH gathered. The threat to her life, our correspondent gathered, followed her objection to claims by the minster of the Federal Capital Territory, Adamu Aliero, that Yar‘Adua had started a daily exercise during last Wednesday‘s Federal Executive Council meeting. The meeting reportedly began with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ojo Maduekwe, pleading with his colleagues that the crisis over Yar‘Adua‘s absence was getting out of hand and that the body should at least find out for itself how the ailing president was faring in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. But no sooner had Madueke ended his plea than the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Ahmed Yayale, said that the FEC should invoke the relevant section of the constitution and declare Yar‘Adua incapacitated so that Nigeria could move forward. He stressed that there was no need to keep deceiving Nigerians any further. Aliero, it was then gathered, reportedly raised a point of order and upon recognition, the FCT minister said he had been informed that, ”The president, had started climbing the stairs up and down; that is, exercising.” This statement, our correspondent learnt, elicited a heated argument among members of the council with that of Aliero and Madueke taking a different dimension. The minister of mines and steel reportedly told her FCT counterpart that she did not believe what he said. Soon after Madueke stepped out of the meeting, she received a text message on her phone that read, ”You are giving support to the enemies of democracy led by Yayale Ahmed, a sodomist, who has donated his daughter and will soon be rewarded. I swear by the spirit of my ancestors that your days on earth are few. Make your will and wait for judgement day.” When our correspondent called Madueke on Saturday evening, she insisted that the matter was a “private issue.” One of her aides who pleaded anonymity however said that the case had been reported to the police. He said, “We have reported the matter to the police because we are not ready to underestimate anybody.” The Force Acting Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Yemi Ajayi, told our correspondent that he won‘t be able to confirm if Madueke made a report to the police until Monday. He said, ”If she made a complaint, then she must have written a petition to the Inspector General of Police. I shall confirm this for you on Monday.” The FCT minister could not be reached for comments as his special assistant, Abdullahi Zure, stopped communicating with our correspondent immediately he learnt the call was from SUNDAY PUNCH. Several calls and text messages sent to his mobile phone were not answered. It will be recalled that the Information and Communications Minister, Prof. Dora Akunyili, and the erstwhile Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mr. Michael Aondoakaa, recently had an altercation following the presentation of a memo by Akunyili requesting that Jonathan be made the acting president. This did not go down well with Aondoakaa who reportedly made an uncomplimentary remark about her tenure as the Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control. http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art2010022113495310 |
