BBC is losing serious credibility if you ask me, even though it was Yaradua that spoke is that how to carry out journalism ? As i post the Aljazeera news has been reporting a serious earthquake in Haiti that's possibly killed thousands while BBC is showing us stock prices.
BBC lost credibility (if it ever had any) several years ago in my eyes. They always have a very derogatory end of year quiz in the African section, as well as very derogatory "have your say" topics. I once complained very bitterly about them displaying the apartheid flag South Africa had before independence on the African news front page; did they care? They displayed it for a further two weeks. . . An apartheid flag! angry angry angry
I don't even watch BBC news, CNN and Sky are miles better, less sensational and leagues more credible.

Why in the World would I want to talk about Swing and SWT, which have no bearing on the client-side of the typical N-Tier application these days? There is an embarrassment of alternatives for client-end: good examples are the Google Gears and Scriptaculous; which of course are all pluggable frameworks on top of others like Struts and Spring.
. . .How about, because the OP specifically mentioned swt? . . .But of course, you never corrected the OP, instead we had the slightly wierd attack on WPF and Silverlight as not being of any value to "Business/Enterprise development".

@Jairzinho

Stop being a cry baby.

I don't understand this "ask a lawyer" thing you keep saying. Are you a lawyer, or do you really think that knowing one to ask changes the argument. I gave you the example of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) towing a line that is diagrametrically opposed to your position. Is the NBA not made up of lawyers? Is it made up of cobblers?

What can I say? You are just touchy and have offered no counter arguments to anything aside from expressing how hurt you are.

For your information the 1999 consitution is largely based on what IBB / Abacha gave us. IBB gave us the 1989 one which the 1979 one manipulated to suit a dictatorship. Abubakar's didn't take out the dictatorial bit's of the 1989 one.
Apart from the 1979 constitutions, all post war constitutions have been given to us by military fiat. Blame yourself for accepting those consitutions and attacking those trapped by them.

Yes, that's the topic; my argument is related enough to the topic, as that is all I am concerned with - Business/Enterprise development. Java has been leveraged as a Business/Enterprise development platform (and this has been stated many times without number for it to sink in by now), therefore if you are going to compare any language, you have to do it from that point of view; and you are the one suffering from comprehension deficit.
What a narrow minded argument! The truth is that you realise that you can only make any argument (even if a very poor one) for Java, by attempting to limit the argument to as few language features as possible. "Business/Enterprise development platform" my foot! Enh enh! Come out in the open, the topic places everything on the table, no pick and choose. grin
I even though you were going to offer some reason why swing and swt offered something for "Business/Enterprise development" that WPF / Silverlight didn't. I really thought you had some new and wicked angle; shame it never came.

logica:
Again comprehension deficit: there is no "exact difference", after all Anonymous Delegates merely copied what was already part of standard Java and put on a veneer of "extras" which were also already part of Java, albeit existing independent patterns. You really do flatter yourself if you think you presented anything close to an argument or logical for that matter.
I will make this simple, C# deals with closures naturally through anonymous delegates. With Java, its a forge with anonymous inner classes.

I asked how much advantage this offers to Business/Enterprise development (which you should know has little to do with GUI).
A whole bunch of mumbo-jumbo which doesn't point to the exact difference between Anonymous Delegates in C# and Anonymous Inner Classes in Java. For instance events + observer/observable pattern is entrenched in Java.
"Business/Enterprise development"? You simply don't understand the topic, so you are making up a fresh one.
I will very kindly explain it to you; the topic is not about Business/Enterprise development. Far from it! Rather, as the title says, it is an argument about "7 Reasons Why .net languages are Not Better Than Java Languages", Do you now get it? cool

As to the "mumbo jumbo" thing, we all understand that some of us get rude when defeated by superior logic. Do you know the "exact difference" between Anonymous Delegates in C# and Anonymous Inner Classes in Java? grin

Why is it BBC our so call president is reaching out tohuh What happened to our Nigerian media outlets?? Why a British one?   This is even making the matters worse because now A foreign company is getting the major news?? Do they go to NTA to receive news from Gordon Brownhuh THE WEST WANTS NIGERIA TO STAY CRIPPLED. angry angry
It isn't the West that wants Nigeria to stay crippled, it is our leaders.

Who would you blame if as you say, British people first heard a crucial interview of Gordon Brown concerning the UK from the NTA?
It wouldn't make sense to blame Nigeria for wanting to cripple the UK, rather, it would point to idiots as leaders in the UK. Now simply swap UK and Nigeria in the above, do you see it now?

If you're more comfortable with .NET like mua, you can add to a c++/cli project and reference from there to your normal .NET. You can use it from Java as well off course or write in C / C++ or whatever other language suits you. grin grin grin

You can explore it at http://cmusphinx.sourceforge.net/wordpress/

Jairzinho:
Hey,I take exception to such language,inferring someone is  'daft' is discourteous & absolutely unecessary.
Maybe you gave reason for that? Why go on to talk as if Jonathan is the owner of the constitution.

Your arguments simply beg the question and lack logic. I wonder why you aren't battling the faulty consitution handed to us by sit tight military strongmen who wanted to be life presidents (Abacha and IBB). In any military setting, the head of state is almighty, that is what they handed to us, because of the way they left the scene. Blame yourself for being shortsighted enough to accept such a flawed document as your definition of law.

Jairzinho: By taking decisive action where he needs to & stop giving excuses. Who are the ministers reporting to at the moment?? Who is setting direction for government? He should address the nation  & stop all this timid actions.
Now the special assistant to the president even talks to the press on behalf of govt. The AG is saying the president can run the country from Saudi?? All these  is a manifestation of lack of direction/leadership.
The fact that they can’t even say the VP is in charge is deeply troubling . Once the president is absent, the default is the VP. . . . . no long thing !
How many times does the simple answer "he has no executive power" need to be given to you?

Jairzinho: You are obviously deficient in your understanding of the law.
The Nigerian Constitution Section 10 states ‘ The Government of the Federation or of a State shall not adopt any religion as State Religion.’ Don’t we have Islamic states in Nigeria?

You people just say things you do not know – THE LAW IS AN A.S.S, ask your lawyer friends to explain what that means.
A governor (plateau) was impeached by 6 house of assembly members looking at the same constitution, Ladoja was impeached from a hotel room, all these were enforced by police.

OBJ declared state of emergency in a state, removed the governor & appointed an administrator, before notifying the NASS ,is that constitutional??. Is the ‘Oath Act’ part of the Nigerian 1999 constitution? Up until recently the police were using a public order act passed by the military to prevent public gathering.
This is at best self contradictory. We all know the position of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), we all know who they have taken to court and why. Your Dugbe market view of the law is no match for that of the umbrella law association in Nigeria.

Wikipedia: The phrase "the law is an backside" originates in Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist, when the character Mr. Bumble is informed that "the law supposes that your wife acts under your direction". Mr. Bumble replies "If the law supposes that ,  the law is a [sic] backside—a slowpoke. If that's the eye of the law, the law is a bachelor; and the worst I wish the law is that his eye may be opened by experience—by experience."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coverture

That Bumble said that did not stop the fact at the time, that "the law supposes that your wife acts under your direction". The law is the basis by which criminals are sent to jail; your argument is illogical. As Debosky says, Jonathan is a mere spare tire according to the laws of Nigeria, or are you saying Jonathan should stage a coup?

Which of these provide an edge in developing Business Applications?

And why won't any Java developer who knows his left from his right know what you refer to as anonymous delegates are the same as what we call Anonymous Inner Classes in Java?
WPF offers tremendous productivity enhancements to GUI development and it does it to levels previously unheard off. Java has no counterpart.

As for Anonymous Inner Classes, I really love to refer to this list all the time for C#'s advantages;
    * Much more concise syntax in C# with lambda expressions and anonymous methods
    * Type inference
    * General support for delegates in the language (method group conversions etc)
    * Multi-cast delegates with language support
    * Events (simple syntax for the observer pattern based on delegates)
    * Asynchronous execution via the system thread-pool
    * Expression trees with language support

I am lag behind in the world of programming. Beaf and other nairalanders I want to know .NET or JAVA. In what way can you help me?
I will advise you to avoid VB.NET and learn C# instead. C# is the defacto .NET language, every important framework (e.g. Mono) is written in C#.
The greatest advantage of learning C# though is that it makes it a piece of cake to learn C++, C, D and Java. C# is based on C++.
Compared to all the languages mentioned above, C# has the shortest learning curve.

You can download a free C# programming software / compiler (called Integrated Developer Environment) here http://www.microsoft.com/express/vcsharp/
If you are more interested in the web then get Visual Web Developer (free) here http://www.microsoft.com/express/vwd/Default.aspx

Give the samples a play and get back if you have any issue's.

When it comes to law & the constitution,the 1st thing you're taught in law school is that 'THE LAW IS AN backside'.

He can alway look for a statute to back himself up,suppose the president died suddenly & we were attacked by cameroun,will he be waiting for a letter from NASS?  undecided undecided

Now yar'Adua is away for 50 days & all the imbeciles are looking for approval from 'the northern cabal'. . . duh !

One of the criticms Yar Adua has come under in his "speech" to the BBC is that he "spoke" in Hausa for part of the interview. Nigerians see that as insulting, the same applies to your behaviour, when in a gathering you launch into a language only your people can understand.

When developers say some technologies aint better than others, it makes you wonder.
.NET is better than Java; both .NET and Java are better than classical ASP and PHP; both classical ASP and PHP are better than pearl etc.

If anyone thinks different, they simply don't know the first thing about software engineering or system architecture.

What are the Java equivalents to these now common place components of the broad .NET family (nothing primitive like swing or anonymous classes please);

The more reason why these "save Nigeria" protest rallies should be seen as the beginning of something new and different. Those who are "well fed and middle class with good comfortable jobs" in the crowd were the ones who would be missing from these types of protest in the past because of apathy and indifference. Their involvement shows the level of disenchantment of all Nigerians with the current direction of Nigeria.

Kudos to everyone who attended. Great turn out and great effort !!!!
All wrong. Its just that the youth of Nigeria are too scared to join in. The vast majority in that group of "well fed and middle class" folk have been marching since they were youths, the march is greying now because our young men see no shame in clinging to mummy.
