From the link, we can at least deduce that they were there during the slave trade (since they were middlemen).
Katsumato's position is that they migrated after independence, thats why I provided a link that shows they were there pre-independence.

@tpia

So you also heard about that ancient Yoruba . . . thingy . . .

It seems Yoruba areas and people might actually be larger than people imagined cus . . . I even remember speaking to a Ghanaian here in the UK and to my suprise the Ghanian was saying with confidence that they were a group of Indigenous people in Ghana who are actually Yorubas . . . even though I don't think they were not using the name Yorubas to refer to themselves.
You people better stop this bullsh*t. If you can't travel and see things for yourselves then you aren't living, There's no need talking stupidly about places you know nothing about. Tpia is a fool, you don't have to join her.

@Katsumato
Ijaw people are not guests. The very first people in Southern Nigeria were the Ijaws, others are their guests. Everybody migrated from somewhere else, but the Ijaws have been around like forever. They even have indegenous settlements in Lagos too.

There are several indian populated cities in the UK; does that make the UK, Indian territory? Like I said, the Ijaws migrated to the riverine areas in Ondo post independence. They have no territory.
Everywhere I look, it says Ondo state has an indegenous Ijaw population called Apoi and Arogbo.

This link describes the Arogbo as middlemen in the slave trade http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arogbo_clan
Politics › Re: Group Canvasses For Yoruba Autonomy by Beaf: 11:42pm On Jan 13, 2010
To be honest, this group seeking autonomy don't represent Yoruba people. Its just the crooks seeking relevance as OAM4J and Katsumoto have noted. They are the Ibori's and Odili's of Yoruba land. The genuine leaders wouldn't make the sort of primitive and imperialistic land grab that those guys are making. Since Fashola isn't in that group, we can best forget about them.

Ijaw have no territory in Ondo state; Ijaw migration to Ondo was post-independence. Ijaw have a presence but not territory.
No, there are over 50 Ijaw towns/villages in Ondo. Ijaws are riverine people, so they aren't in the hinterland.

OAM4J:
If there is going to be ND state, definitely Edo, Delta and Bayelsa will be better in ND state.

Like I said earlier who belong to where will be determined through referendum. Majority will carry the day.

Even places like Kwara and Kogi where Yorubas are dominant will vote to determine if want to part of Yorubaland or North.

my only fear for you beaf is that, due to high multi ethnicities prevailing in ND, ND might have a problem staying as one, The igbos dominant area might prefer to join east and some in Edo and Delta might still prefer to be part of Yoruba. Again oil politics might also work against you, if you understand what I mean.
My brother, believe me, we will have little problem staying together. I already pointed out that we have a minority group governor in Delta state right now and he won't be the last.
Even if a call is made to the Itsekiri's only, their land overlaps Ijaw land all along the coastline of Delta state and the Ijaw will staunchly refuse to be divided. Ijaw territory stretches from Ondo state, through Delta to Bayelsa and neighbouring states.

Ok time for history lesson. Please when did the Bini empire spread to Ghana? The only empire that stretched through Dahomey to Ghana was the Oyo empire of the 15th-18th century.
The very name "Dahomey" is derived from the name of an Esan (Edo) general called Isidahome. His descendants are still alive.
Benin was powerful enough that the name of the waters along the West African coast is called the bight of benin.

I have never heard of any Yoruba people from Edo state. They don't exist and Bini people don't speak Yoruba.

Katsumoto:
Dude relax
Don't you know your history? While the Yorubas may not have a connection with all tribes in Bendel State, they certainly share history with the Bini and Itsekiri.
Bini people will not go with you. You are talking about people whose empire spanned across Ondo, Lagos etc all the way to Ghana.
Itsekiri's will not go either, because despite infighting in Delta state, they are well represented, even though they are a minority. The current Delta state governor is an Itsekiri man, despite the overwhelming numbers of Igbo, Ijaw and Urhobo. I don't know of any other part of this country where that can occur. Itsekiri man will not want to be swallowed up and spat into irrelevance.

Bottomline, we love ourselves too much to let anybody go. cool

Another notable speaker at the forum, Dr. Onaoalpo, said that Yorubas were intelligent and hardworking. He advised his kinsmento be united and speak with one voice even as he urged traditional rulers in the land to end the rift among them and provide true leadership for the Yoruba race.

The Gbonigi-led panel is to comprise three representatives of the 10 identified Yoruba zones including Edo, Ondo, Ogun, Osun, Kwara, Kogi Oyo, Ekiti , Delta and Lagos State.

The three representatives would be made up of a youth, a woman and adult male.
Rubbish! Brazenly stup!d and arrogant!
There is nothing that annoys ND people more than being referred to as some branch of Youruba. You tell a some people that you don't have a bleeping clue of what they are saying and they retort that all bendel people can speak Yoruba. Very annoying!

Nobody should come looking for any "Yoruba zones" in ND.

Well, am not even sure the Acting President status will be enough for him. may be the death of Yaradua will.
There will be no VP at this time, except the cases to heard tomorrow (same judge Abutu) bring dramatic changes that finally see Yar Adua to the door.

Politics › Senate Probes NTA, Thisday Over Motion On Yar’adua by Beaf(op): 8:00pm On Jan 13, 2010
Senate Probes NTA, THISDAY over Motion on Yar’Adua
From Sufuyan Ojeifo in Abuja, 01.13.2010

Senate yesterday resolved to probe THISDAY newspaper report on its Tuesday motion on President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s health condition.

The Upper House also said that it would probe the refusal by the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) to cover and televise live the plenary sitting yesterday where the motion was debated.
Senator Chris Anyanwu, a former journalist, cited Order 18 of the Senate Standing Rules (2007 as Amended) to table a complaint to the Senate, saying that the lead story of THISDAY, entitled: “Yar’Adua: Senate Considers Sending Team to S’ Arabia” breached her privilege.

She complained that the report contained information about what the Senate wanted to do when the action was to be taken and called on the Upper House to investigate how the reporter got his information.
In line with Order 18 of the Senate Standing Rules, she laid a copy of THISDAY edition of Tuesday, January 12, 2010 on the table before the Senate.

The Senate directed the matter to its Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to grill the reporter to disclose his source of information.  The Senator Omar Hambagda-led committee was given two weeks to complete its assignment.
Also yesterday, the Upper House lambasted the NTA management for failing to transmit yesterday’s session live, saying it was an act of sabotage which would be investigated.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information and Media, Senator Ayogu Eze, who briefed the press at the end of plenary, said: “The first thing I want to say is to inform Nigerians that this morning (yesterday morning), we were billed to take this debate that happened live and we had informed NTA accordingly and the NTA management refused to bring the live cameras.

“I think it was an attempt to frustrate the effort of the Senate to brief the people of Nigeria live so that they can see what we are talking about and it was an attempt to frustrate our independent arm of government.

“This is a Legislature and it is not a part of the Executive and if we had commissioned NTA, I spoke with the DG of NTA last night and he gave me no indication that he was not coming to bring his cameras this morning (yesterday morning).

“I think we owe a duty to inform the people of Nigeria about this sabotage; this effort to frustrate an arm of government.  It is all what we have been talking about: that the Legislature is the weeping boy of the Nigerian democracy because it is the youngest arm and therefore people can conspire and do whatever they like.”

Eze added: “I think it is in very bad taste for the NTA management under the directives of whoever to do what they did today (yesterday) because that station is run with the money contributed by Nigerian people.

“They come to defend their budget and there is provision for them on a yearly basis and they have no reason whatsoever not to avail their services to the people of Nigeria who indeed own that station.

“The matter is not going to end here because we are going to conduct a full inquiry into what has happened this morning (yesterday morning).

“The Senate takes very strong exception to what happened by NTA and we have no hidden agenda.  The Senate is filled with very mature Nigerians and I do not think anybody can gag the Senate.

“What the DG NTA told me when I called him was that he will record it and play it back which means that he will record and edit out whatever he does not like and this is the Senate.”

He continued: “The Senate is made up of very responsible citizens of this country.  Any attempt to mortgage this democracy because if you gag the Senate or the National Assembly, you have effectively gagged the representative of the people.

“This is very serious and I want the people to appreciate how serious this situation is and to understand that this indeed can be an equivalent to subvert the will of the people.

“This was an attempt to subvert the will of the people. We are going to do everything as an independent arm of this democracy to resist, investigate and get to the root of what happed today (yesterday) to make sure that this kind of misdemeanour will not happen next time. We want to leave this at this for now.”
