But I have scoured through my returns and I dont see any such impact anywhere in mine though. Further, as far as I know the tax credits are all tied to things done in Canada. I can only see under-reporting income earned before one becomes a permanent resident being profitable for only new immigrants (not while filing tax returns but when you come in and file world income when applying for child care subsidy or child tax benefits). Aside from that, I do not see how income relating to a period one is not a resident in canada would impact benefit entitlement when filing tax returns after one has become taxable in Canada. However, you do have to report income earned in Nigeria while you are taxable in Canada.

I dont think the system is built to capture this income at the point of filing taxes. That is y as a new immigrant the federal and provincial non-refundable tax credits are pro rated too. For example, even if you land in Canada say September 2019 and start working from September 2019 till December 31, 2019. Your non-refundable tax credit would be pro rated to the amount of months you were taxable in Canada, about 4 months.

The only problem is that I am not sure why Turbo Tax bothers to ask that question. May be it is a question that is supposed to simply be checked against the information you submitted for your world income report when applying for child tax benefit and child subsidy as a new immigrant. My 2 cents.

@ your last paragraph, there is a reason Turbo Tax and the other service providers require that information. Like i said earlier, you would not see the amount on your tax returns but it influences how much personal federal tax credits you are entitled to which in turn influences your refund/amount owing. I've filed my taxes and that of some others myself and i am 100% certain it impacts your tax refund. Please see screenshot below from CRA website and let me know if you still hold your opinion.

It's always best to declare your full income and let them decide what to do with that information.

Also my experience. Income I earned before I became a resident did not reflect in my returns although I declared it.

The amount would not reflect on your returns as taxable income but it does influence the tax credits that you get which would impact on your tax refund/amount owing.

Why do you think I shouldn't convert from CIMA? There's a provision for that on their website and already sent an email, still waiting for a response though.
I see other people have responded. The requirement to convert from CIMA is to have sat and passed ALL CIMA papers. I doubt that writing only one would make you qualify. Nonetheless, the response from CPA would be most authentic, so see what they say when they respond.

Hello everyone, please this is for the account and finance people in the house; I am an accountant and I plan to write CIMA soon(my school has an MoU with CIMA, so I'm only going to write the strategic case study exam). I plan to convert to CPA once I'm done.
I'm thinking of focusing my career in corporate finance, so I will appreciate any tips landed seniors in the house can offer. Anything that will aid job search and landing a job. My plan is to land in Alberta.
@Blackbuddy
@czaratwork
Thanks
I think you should abort mission if your plan is to obtain CPA using the CIMA. You should check the requirement for obtaining CPA with CIMA designation, or better, send an email to CPA to clarify.

Please, send them a mail on this and confirm for yourself.

As a matter of fact, I am almost done with the process. I started about November last year and have been sent the membership application form ahead of May induction.

I don't need to send an email, i successfully did it. Like i said earlier, the information on the website regarding completing the exams before landing was updated last year. If anyone is in doubt, let them contact CPA of whichever province they intend to settle.

The information is very valid if you are converting from ACCA to CPA BC.

This is the information on CPA BC website. Could you let us know the source of your info? The truth is that information was included as part of the requirement sometime ago and its been updated since last year April, which is why i asked people to research basic stuff for themselves.

Make sure your finish that exam in Nigeria, else CPA will not accept the conversion if you come to write any ACCA paper in canada....
I don't think this information is correct, if it is, then quote your source. This is why it is good for people to research basic stuff for themselves, and when in doubt, contact the authority (CPA in this case).

Do I file taxes if I have spent less than a year in CA?
You will file taxes as long as you established residency in Canada for the year.

Hi, i think your questions are too generic are vague. What tech scene? what is your understanding of its current position and what changes are you looking forward to? What exams? What is your specialty? Consider revising your question and you may get responses.

My host in Ontario received a letter from Ontario Trillium Benefit with a pay check of over $300. We are no more in Ontario and we don't know how we came about this.

I submitted our Canada Child Benefit whilst in Ontario but I called CRA immediately we relocated to Edmonton to change our address.

Anyone with a better idea on how to go about this? That money will do some groceries for us ooo grin
It'd be better to send the check back to them, otherwise, once your records (including change of province/address) regularizes, you'd be required to refund the amount. I think it's based on the idea that you'll also receive your new province's benefit.

Quite an effort you have put in there and i truly feel for you. But like they say, it will all end in praise.

I had to read your write-up twice to be sure i am not missing out anything and I am appalled that it is filled with "I did, I did, I did". Initially thought you landed alone, then i noticed your DH in the additional baby part and corroboration paragraph.

Its is suppose to be a team thing and being the African man, it is his duty to be doing all this house hunting wahala. Yours is to choose and decide if its ok for the family, then contribute money if need
It is not proper to tell a stranger on the internet how to run her home or what gender roles should be adopted, esoecially when she did not ask for it. She stated in her post that they were a family of 5, why didn't you ask who was minding the kids when she went house hunting? How do you know he's an African man? Everyone does what works for their family and we should all respect that!

Which route and airline was that? Something must have gone wrong. Even powdery foods such as Elubo goes.
Nothing went wrong! Get familiar with food items you can/can't bring into Canada. Powdered Elubo and Kpomo are not same thing.

Is the rate applied in naija tax higher? If yes then you are good but if not then the difference must be paid in Canada. This is my basic understanding of mutual agreement between countries on taxation.
This would happen if you earn a really huge salary in Nigeria. Otherwise, when converted to CAD, you'd likely not have any difference to pay as your earnings would most likely be in the lower income tax bracket.

Interesting!

Please, any idea on how to go about filing tax returns from Nigeria? I did a short landing in July 2018 and will only return to settle in Canada in June 2019.

I understand improper filing of taxes can affect one’s citizenship application/approval.

You can try turbotax or some other tax filing services online.

Haha @skywalk12. 1st landing was early June for 10 days and I just came in again so cumm 10 days

You become tax resident from when you first established residency in Canada. So technicaly, you became eligible to file income taxes from June when you landed. In 2019, you'll have to declare your worldwide income (both earned in Canada and Nigeria) from June (when you became a PR), however, due to the double taxation agreement between Nigeria and Canada, you would not have to pay taxes on income already subject to tax in Nigeria, but you must still file returns.
This response does not cover child benefits though, i don't know how that works.

A company needed advertised 15 positions with the same job description and person specification. I fit into all these positions and I want to apply.

Can I use the same CV and Cover letter for the positions because they are all the same, only the locations where the post holder is needed is different
Hi, i suggest you take advantage of newcomers/career services in your city/province. There are tons of them these days and you may be able to get help tailored to your situation. There are lots of conflicting information on what recruiters look for so you may as well get help from experienced/professionals.

It simply means that you "may" get it before the first day of the third month which is the stipulated timeline. I got mine within one month of landing, entire application was online. I moved from the province now though.

how much work experience in canada is required to show sufficient ties as a PR to apply for US Visa?
There's really no hard and fast rule. The VO would likely assess your situation holistically and decide to or not issue a visa.

Apologies for the late response. I'm aware ACCA has centres in Canada but I think it's only in Ontario. It would not very convenient writing it there I suppose.

I didn't attend any tuition centre since I obtained my ACA not very long ago when ICAN converted to IFRS. I'm just focusing on the past questions and a photocopy of BPP Practice and Revision kit which I purchased N2,500 per paper beside Ivy League, Yaba. The BPP practice and revision kit is very comprehensive but one is expected to have a fair knowledge of all the IFRS and IAS before exploring this option for the Strategic Business Reporting (SBR) and P7 exam. I also bought Ivy League's lecture note N1,500 per paper but it is not very comprehensive. I'm writing 2 papers in December, SBR and P7.

If you study the past questions rigorously, say 15 diets and understand the principles behind them, you can be sure to pass. I did this for 2 months when I wrote the ACCA Diploma in IFRS exam and passed well in one siting without attending lectures..

I have friends that ply the online route but I prefer to adopt the fire brigade approach. smiley
Just to add that there are ACCA centres in other province. Also, there is an option of paying for a special unlisted centre in any city.

Honestly the few times i have been to guelph,i have seen alot more blacks than Kitchener,in kitchener i have hardly seen a black and a white person sit together and having a drink,i have see. that alot more in guelph,d drug addiction level in kitchner too is very high..u see them on d road,in the park doing drugs so you might want to consider that especially if u have teenagers. Then also for the accomodation thing we spoke to agent in guelph at some point and she said we shld come since we are new immigrants there wld be some consideration but since hubby was bent on staying in Kitchener we didnt go,that offer d agent gave us in guelph we didnt get in Kitchener,i have had more ppl smile and play with my 2 year old in guelph than Kitchener but again accomodation is more expensive in guelph than Kitchener but interms of structure guelph looks more organised. On d job thing d advantage dat kitchener has is dat it has 2 other cities attached to it,waterloo and cambridge so ure chooses for work is cut across those 3 cities, where i stay in kitchener is 4mins drive to enter waterloo infact u wld still think u are in Kitchener.

Congrats on your landing. I would assume your experience with seeing drug abuse on the streets is because you live around the downtown. There are lots of very quiet and family oriented areas in Kitchener or you could consider Cambridge. Consider areas like doon south, huron park, hidden valley. You may be shocked to find same thing in Guelph if you visit downtown.

I'm new here...Thanks for this thread so far. My situation right now is that, my agent and i had a discussion on Canadian permanent residence for my husband, daughter and i, he said he would do it for 3.5 and we started the process, after a year and half i got a call from him for biometrics, we went to Lagos for biometrics, but when the visa came out, it was mine that got approved and guess what I got? Visitor's visa. The issue now is that my husband and daughter weren't given. He promised to do it and ask my husband to come for another biometrics but He's requesting for 3.5 million for visitor's visa. I'm think in of going to canada first and if there's a way I can legally stay in the country and bring my husband and daughter legally. OR should I wait for him to do my hubby's own, then go together and claim asylum? Pls I really need a useful advice right now, I'm seriously in a dilemma
I'm not sure you'd get advice on claiming asylum here. It appears that your plan all along was to get a visitors visa and claim asylum, because how is it that you discussed permament residence and you didnt know about the exams you were supposed to take? No basic reserach at all? Now that you've found this thread, count your loss, forget agent, research and apply for your visa yourself.

there’s nothing like ‘I didn’t qualify for visa at that tome’. This is the same visa students get easily talk more of a PR. You shd know your rights. Green card holders are allowed freely here without visa so why shdnt we? I’m sure it’s a vendetta against Nigerians because the bad eggs among us cross the border illegally and as a result immigration minister had to go down to Nigeria because of the issue and advised the US embassy to reduce the visa quota they give to Nigerians. People’s visas are being cancelled and those that have travelled once can’t even travel again with the same visa. I’m sure the officer was clearly acting on instructions if not, why would she also deny a married pregnant PR lady? I rest my case.

People have told you it had nothing to do with your race, yet you insist. Anyone can be denied a visa wether white or black, pregnant or not. Reapply if you must and a different VO may perceive you/your intentions differently, otherwise, let it rest. Life happens

I know someone who left a Big 4 in Nigeria as a Tax Manager and got a role as a Tax senior in the same Big 4 firm in Canada. So it is possible.

Realistically, it may not be easy to get into taxation with your Nigeria tax experience unless you're willing to start afresh or leverage your networks to get an internal transfer from your current big 4. If you're in transfer pricing though, it would be easier.
