midnighter:Once a person picks that as an issue,i simply lose taste in the chats because it would be hard to form an interesting chat without being hampered by needless and unwanted issues! Only God knows the next thing the person would not want! Unless i have disrespected the person with the content of my chats then i would see it as disrespectful but but saying i must use an uppercase to chat with a friend is just too petty! Thats my opinion! Simple! midnighter:Read carefully! I never said i turned down the person's request....i didnt even tell the person! If i did please refer it to me and i will apologize and correct it Like i said,I simply converted all her names to uppercase while chatting! Try to be more objective while reading rather than involving emotions! Its too obvious that you take things too personal! midnighter:Like i said you take things too personal! Go and check google! Igbo was also referred to as ibo! Nigeria is used during a formal function while naija is used during an informal conversation! If you dont like such, then someone else does! Its not all about you and your perceptions! Wahala dey ohhh ![]() midnighter:True! Now if that person has a needless issue with me addressing him or her with a lowercase letter,i can as well call them Mrs or Mr or even Sir or Ma when i chat with them next time! smh midnighter: ![]() Sorry dear you are actually the one that will end up with zero friend because you want formality in an informal platform! Not everyone like you loves formality! You are not like everyone okay? maybe you might end up asking your friends to address you on social media as Mrs when you get married or as a Professor when you obtain such profession! Kai ![]() |
theButterfly:Yeah! I do respect your reservations which i find shocking though interesting! But that doesnt make you opinion right! Just because that's your opinion doesn't mean its a fact or that i am stubborn like you are wrongly assuming! If that is your mentality, then you have met a serious brick-wall! Lastly,i created this thread to sample opinions which so far i have acknowledged and even said 'different strokes for different folks'....so where have i faulted? Before i asked,i had also gotten matured opinions from differing social media platforms...unfortunately,most people on this platform are too formal and like taking things too personal! Too bad ![]() |
theButterfly:I either use lowercase or uppercase letters when addressing my 'friends' on a social media platform and they dont have a problem with that....i also dont feel any form of disrespect or irrelevance if am addressed that way know.....its just a casual conversation! whether my moniker or actual name is lowercase or uppercase is not important to me as long as the content of our chats are causal without any form of disrespect! Now if it's my actual name I could let it slide a few times b|c mistakes do happen. If it's a regular occurrence, then I would most definitely correct them b|c it would look like I'm chatting with a 3-year old. It's clearly a habit for you to not capitalise the first letter of her name and it bothers her / has always bothered her, which is why she's telling you now. That up there is your opinion! which you are entitled to! Unless you are referring to those who engage in informal chats as childish like you are unfortunately concluding! Finally, your last point using etiquette is just preposterous and laughable! well....thats your opinion! |
midnighter:You are getting it so wrong.....when it comes to informal conversations, everything goes.....hence,i dont think a lowercase or uppercase should suggest an offence or being belittled! Its all about your perception of the personality! Its your constant communication with such person that will make you conclude if this person is disrespectful and not because your name was uppercase or lowercase! Like i said, she is taking things personal and being petty! midnighter:Names or countries are addressed in uppercase format to indicate some form of formality considering the platform! This is not the case when you are having an informal or casual interaction with your peers where even Nigeria is shortened for 'naija' So why should i get offended if someone tags Port-Harcourt as PHcity....? So why should one be offended if Igbo is referred to as Ibo? Does that in any way take away the respect or relevance of a tribe or LGA? Well, different folks for different folks! |
Heroclitus:Its normal...different strokes for different folks! |
sinaj:....am only trying to point out to you the irrelevance of taking things too personal! Seriously, most of you ladies are making issues out of nothing! Its meant to be informal.... What is informal... having a relaxed, friendly, or unofficial style, manner, or nature. casual, relaxed, easy-going, natural, unceremonious, unofficial, non-formal, unstudied, unaffected, open, friendly, intimate, simple, unpretentious, easy, unstuffy, unbuttoned, chummy, pally, matey denoting the grammatical structures, vocabulary, and idiom suitable to everyday language and conversation rather than to official or formal contexts. synonyms: colloquial, vernacular, idiomatic, demotic, non-standard, popular, dialectal, non-literary, simple, natural, familiar, everyday, unofficial, unpretentious, slangy, chatty, folksy |
Interestingly, the owner of nairaland addressed us with lowercase letters and yet no one complained! ![]() Many people really take things too personal! No wonder we have depressed people all over the place! smh |
midnighter:Yeah and the uppercase name MIDNIGHTER gives you wings abi? I guess seun is disrespectful for addressing you as 'midnighter' smh ![]() |
sinaj:It is 'bean cakes' not akara
Now you know how a convo feels like when it is formal! |
sinaj:'It is alright' and not 'issorite' ![]()
|
Tacha knew that she had body odour while she was at BBnaija house! When mercy said she was smelling, tacha went straight to her bed space and put some body spray on herself! |
sinaj:You don't need to! Your first sentence implies such! Well I get your point! |
theButterfly:please do....it will be interesting to know how the convo will flow! Maybe you could say you want to be addressed as Ms Butterfly in an informal convo! For Christ sake, its an informal interaction! |
sinaj:To be honest,if I were to take things personal like she does, then the 'nope' or 'k' or 'yh' would have been a turn off for me! But I realized that there is peace of mind wen one doesn't take things personal! being addressed with uppercase or lowercase doesn't take away your respect or increase it! Una too dey take things too personal jare! |
dominique:Okay different strokes for different folks! However,I would like to know why its wrong to be addressed with names in lowercase in an 'informal' conversation.... Firstly, she is a friend! Secondly, its an 'informal' chat! Knowing the difference between informal or formal conversations or chat is imperative! If I want to apply for a job,I will write a 'formal' letter and address as such but not in an informal conversation! You do not use 'don't' in a formal conversation but 'do not'! |
wilsonchilboy:Respect? how does using a lowercase to the first letter of one's name imply disrespect esp if the person is a friend! I would understand if such person was having a formal chat with me but not an informal chat.... The usage of lowercase doesn't in any way reduce one's respect for the person just that same way an uppercase does not increase one's respect for the personality! There is a formal and informal conversation....know the difference! |
lilmax:Bros can you show me where I obeyed her? She said she wanted one uppercase on her first name and I gave her all in uppercase letters! If you can't see the humor behind that, then too bad for you! |
sinaj:I never called her names....its a friendly conversation and not a job interview! Secondly, you haven't told me the reason why its wrong to be addressed that way in a personal chat with a 'friend' in a social media platform! We were having a great chat until then....Life would be a lot better if most of you don't take things too personal! |
Was having a very lovely conversation with a female friend on a social media platform...and during the conversation, I addressed her with lowercase letters ie 'amanda' but she said I should address her as 'Amanda' I enquired about the reasoning behind such and wondered why she was insistent on the first letter of her name being an uppercase letter...I also reminded her that it was an informal chat that should not necessarily involve any formality on our part.... But she kept insisting on it....so I just placed all to full uppercase letters AMANDA For me,I think its too petty and childish....and besides, being addressed with an 'amanda' does not in anyway take way one's relevance and respect! Just wanted to share this and seek differing opinions(with reasons not advise ohh) from others on this platform...Thanks! ![]() |
JhayJoe:True....damage control! |
honorr:.....and mike said he wasn't referring to absolute trust but just trust which frodd foolishly responded by saying he doesnt trust his mum! Like i said initially, which you failed to peruse,no one says you should TOTALLY or ABSOLUTELY TRUST SOMEONE! some pips here seriously have comprehension issues due their various affiliations! |
Hotworta1: ![]() Just because you are supporting a housemate doesn't make you blind to their deficiencies while pointing out that of others! That for me is unintelligent! Just for your info am not a supporter any housemate! Am simply a fan of the show! I have made my point....feel free to cancel it! ![]() |
honorr:Unless you ain't watching the show....If you dont believe the transparency of the game, then why are you watching or having interest in it? Secondly,it would seem that you misunderstood my usage of 'sponsors'! Frood said he trusts no one....which i find highly unlikely because he wont be eating food stuffs by sponsors if he had no level of trust in them! Thats why its imperative to comprehend my initial point before hastily concluding! |
ChristoBam:What they are doing is called CONSOLATION! They knew their queen messed up big time with her classless attitude but they are still looking for some one to blame! |
frodd said he doesn't trust anyone....so why is he in big brother naija's abode? why is he eating stuffs brought by biggie or drinks and food stuffs from sponsors without suspecting that it may have been poisoned or contaminated? No one said you should TOTALLY trust someone! |

Tacha has no one to blame but herself! Her terrible behaviour was just too obvious! |
So tacha needed an uppercut from a rival lady before she finally realised that she had Body Odour? ![]()
|
Tacha is really a bitter person in real life! Just have fun instead of labelling someone a nuisance! |

biacan:So based on your analogy, men are the reason why some ladies get involved in lesbianism? I do hope this 'generalisation' of yours also covers your loved ones esp your dad, your uncles, your brothers, your nephews, your cousins and your future male children? |
