I just saw IT Follows and I was rather disappointed!! Kinda expected a whole lot more, too many plot holes and questions left unanswered. sad
And the painful thing is I think someone highly recommended it on here.

About to start Hereditary now, hope its not like the former angry
The same person that recommended It Follows, recommended Hereditary. Use your tongue to count your teeth.

Nope to both. Will watch Papillon one of these days. However, I'm never gonna watch Crazy Rich Asians. I feel like the title alone has told me everything I need to know about the film. They are rich, they're crazy, they're asians. So what else is new?
You've been on a roll since last night. Buwahahahaha.

Pertaining to Hereditary, there has been more "Ayes" than "Nays" in this forum alone. The only other person that found the film boring apart from you and him, is olu4life. Others have nothing but rave reviews.

It was a deliberate and clumsy attempt at a provocation, and he knows it. Anybody that have REALLY watched Hereditary will tell you it's anything but boring. You might as well call The Witch boring, cuz both have similar premise.
Nah, it ain't a clumsy attempt to goad you or anything. You're just finding it hard to accept the fact that someone can find a film highly rated in your world, to be boring.

I've watched it, I think. It's about a Catholic priest that went to Japan, renounced his priesthood, accepted the Japanese culture, and married a Japanese wife... or something like that. Some priest were sent to find him, and they eventually did... my memory is vague on the rest. Didn't like the film.
I didn't like the film either, but it was highly praised by all critics. I love Garfield's terrific performance, though. The film was good and thought-provoking with a message passed across, but not too good as critics made it out to be.

Mehn, no matter the number of horrors I've or will watch, the next one must scare me. It's my nature. The only horror movies that can never scare me are the ones without jump-scares or the ones I'd watched before. Beorn, if you're trying to influence me to watch the Nun then I must inform you that your plan o wa failure. Kole werk! grin
LOL. Ishilove, the ONLY reason I watched The Nun was because I'm determined to complete The Conjuring franchise. I'd seen 4 Installments of the franchise, I can't afford to back down now.

I have this secret rule for movies which is; once I've watched a movie, I usually force myself to watch the subsequent prequels, sequels or Installments no matter how trashy, scary or fun they may be. If not for my secret code, I won't watch The Nun because I knew it'd scare me.

Horror movies like the Ring trilogy, Autopsy of Jane Doe, Evil Dead, etc., I haven't seen them because fear no gree me. The Nun is scary, Annabelle Creation got nothing on it in the fear segment. Annabelle & Annabelle Creation didn't scare me that much when compared to The Nun or Conjuring part 1.

Okay let's compare and contrast.

- My rating of Hereditary: 8/10
- RT ratings: 89%
- IMDb: 73/10
- Your rating: 4/10

- My rating of The Nun: 4/10
- RT ratings: 26%
- IMDb: 5.6/10
- Your ratings: 8/10

Bottom line, my ratings paralleled that of the general consensus, whilst yours is on an expired crack grin grin
LMAO. You must be taking the piss at this juncture. RT? IMDb? Really, Koice? grin grin

Do you need me to dig up your post where you said you don't base your rating on RT or MC? That they're are paid critics. That you love to watch the movies yourself and rate it without prejudice?

How about when you dismissed the general consensus poor ratings of Venom and rated it highly, telling us not to mind 'em critics?

Or when you trashed IMDb ratings as one of the worst ratings one can use as a benchmark. Now, you're suddenly in good terms with them. grin grin

What applied for Venom to you (poor rating by the critics, but a box office hit and rated high by you), applies to The Nun as well. Despite the lopsided rating by the crtics, it's a box office hit and rated highly by us all except you of course. tongue grin
TV/Movies › Re: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by Beorn: 1:50am On Nov 04, 2018
Koice, I can't quote your long posts, let me just go ahead with my rebuttal.

You saying all you can glean from my post is that I'm enamored to jump-scares horror. It's funny because it's like you haven't been paying attention when I've repeated it on here that the reason I hate horror movies is because apart from that they scare me, the producers/directors usually focus on scaring the audience (the major aim of most horror movies) instead of scripting intelligent storylines that are cerebral, imaginative and refreshing. In other words, horror genre stimulates my brain less than most genres.

Then I've labeled The Others a horror masterpiece with a rating of 9.5, saying that it's one of my best horror movies of all time. I praised the script, the characters, the superb acting of Nicole, the shocking end etc. I've also rated Sixth Sense, Split and get
Out very high. None of these horror movies focused on jump-scares.

So, how can I be enamored to jump-scare horrors over intelligent well-crafted psychological horrors? It makes no sense. Don't Breathe was fantastic because of the storyline and wonderful acting especially by the old man. I didn't love it because of any jump-scare.

I refused to watch The Apostle till today because I hate jump-scare horrors and it looked to me that it might be one. So, how on earth did you arrive at the conclusion that jump-scare is what I look out for in a horror?

I love The Others, Sixth Sense and The Nun, the first two had no jump-scare according to you, while The Nun was filled with jump-scare. So, how come? Weren't I suppose to hate The Others and its ilk because of lack of jump-scare? The reason I love The Nun is because I find the storyline apart from the jump scare, interesting. No matter the jump-scare, if I don't enjoy the storyline, the horror becomes trash to me. Hereditary had no superb storyline despite the director wasting my time in building up a basic suspense that sucked after 2 hours. 2 hours of average hot mess!!

As for your post about my position on IT, I haven't read the book so I can only base my judgment on the film. We're not debating the novel. As long as I'm concerned, IT without the jump-scares had a good storyline and a well-executed acting by the casts. It's the acting by those kids that made me love IT not because of the clown or gore or jump-scares. Those kids were the life wire of that movie.

Aswear you just spoke my mind on the movie. Its a very slowwwwww movie. Still wondering how it scared people. The only tragedy seen was when the girl's head cut off. Then perhaps when the dark entity was after the boy.
Koice abeg Hereditary no be am cheesy Was just an overhyped movie.
I'm still wondering what's so good about Hereditary. Is it not the same Hereditary we all watched? The way Koice was praising it, I had to re-check the movie on Wikipedia to make sure I didn't watch a fake one. Koice probably smoked Crack that made him think Hereditary was Split and other good horror movies. grin

My rating of Hereditary then was and still is 4/10. Boring movie. undecided
TV/Movies › Re: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by Beorn: 11:16pm On Nov 03, 2018
KoiceReloaded:
The Sixth Sense is not even a good example of a proper psychological horror. The sequel Split did a far more better job. Also, Others was phenomenal in making a strong case against jump-scare tactics in the supernatural subgenre.
While The Others was a supernatural subgenre, you can't really compare it with most supernatural subgenre which focuses more on the exorcism of violent demons and scary phenomenons. The Others focused more on the ghost world, its concept was amazing, way above most horror movies. It's not feasible to keep producing horrors like Split and Others constantly. A lot of brain-storming goes into it.

- It follows,
- The Others,
- The Witch,
- A Dark Song,
- The Void,
- The Autopsy of Jane Doe,
- The Orphanage

These are some of supernatural horrors that don't rely on jump-scares. In It Follows, an entity stalks the protagonist and his friends, but in a quiet creepy way. For instance, it builds up so much dread that when a door opens, you'd fully expect the entity to be one behind the door, only for it to be some ordinary bloke. The film is a tutorial on how to use creativity and psychological mindgames to keep us at the edge of our seats, instead of using some cheap scaring tactics.

Jump-scare cheapens supernatural horror, and makes it less interesting, boring, and forgettable.

Jump-scare is one of the most basic building blocks of horror. It's a vault, a panic room. It's safe. It's a tactic to fall back on when a filmmaker doesn't wanna take risk, probably because they don't have the intellectual capability to create something meaningful out of something less meaningful.
Among that list, I've seen It Follows and The Others, and they scared me WAAAAAY LESS than The Nun did. In short, The Others never scared me for once because the movie focused more on building the characters and the plot in the movie ahead of the impending mind-Bleep at the end of the movie. It Follows scared me like twice. And that reiterates my point that non-use of jump scare hardly scare audience, even me that's easily susceptible to fear in horror movies. Another horror movie that hardly scared me except during the jump scare scenes was IT. Without Jump scare, I'm not sure any horror can scare me except extremely gore ones like Saw. IT is interesting without the jump scares. Such horrors are my kind of horror movies. They focus less on the fear factor, but more on the message/story line. Jump scare might be basic, but there are some horrors where it's required alongside a good script. The Nun without those jump scares would've been an average movie. The jump scare was needed to add fear factor to it.

Wow! If a powerful and meaningful movie like Hereditary could bore you, little wonder you're so taken with it's polar opposite, The Nun. It all make sense now. You're a bonafide jump-scare lover. grin
Powerful ko, powerless ni!! Yimu. grin grin

Hereditary was a boring horror movie. Its message lost in the sleep-inducing time-wasting mechanism the director employed in the first one hour of the movie. A movie that took so much valuable time to build up its storyline, only for the ending to be very basic. Compare it with The Others whose build up matched the unexpected ending. It's worth the wait. Hereditary still employed jump scare towards the end to salvage what had been a total waste of time. If that movie was scripted well, it'd have achieved its aim within 1hr 30mins instead of the 2hrs borefest. Mtcheew. grin
