oyetpel:Oyetpel, why you dey yarn like this? Don't you know there are people, English people that can speak Russian native dialect perfectly? They mastered it after many years of learning it. What if the person has lived there for up to 15 years so he can never be able to speak the Russian language perfectly? Why are you even arguing this? My uncle has lived in Germany for up to 15 years, when he's on phone with his German wife (when he comes home for Christmas sometimes), the only way you'll be able confirm he's not a German is his skin colour or if you'd had already him before. He speaks German flawlessly and he didn't have to study Linguistics in school to learn it. Just living there got him that skills. When you travel to China, you'll meet some Nigerians that have spent up to 20 years over there rapping the Chinese language like say na bread and butter. Coming to Nigeria, I've seen some Igbos that moved to Lagos at a young age and after many years of living in the SW can speak Yoruba perfectly. In short, the only way you can differentiate them as Igbos are their names. Nothing else. |
oyetpel:Yes I would, same way Koice who's not a Glaswegian can detect a Glaswegian accent simply because he studied Linguistics for some time while in school. Knowing an accent is different from understanding an accent. When a Russian speaks his native Russian language, I won't be able to understand a thing he's saying, but when he speaks English, the funny intonation he speaks with will give him away as a Russian. There are some Igbo people that have this "L" and "R" mix up way of speaking, so once they speak English, you'll be able to spot they're Igbos by their accent or the way they pronounced certain words. |

What breed of humans do we have populating the earth these days? Look at how proud she is about her 33 abortions. Tufiakwa!! |
KoiceReloaded:I had friends that studied Linguistics and they all confirmed it's a very difficult topics. |
oyetpel: oyetpel:Are you sure amnesia due to old age hasn't been dealing with you? Have you forgotten your initial stance of non-natives or non-Russians not being able to spot a typical Russian accent which formed the premise of our debate? That I don't know the various name of the accents doesn't mean I wouldn't be able to tell that it's an England accent. Not understanding what a Scouser (Liverpudian and Evertonian indigene)is saying due to their tongue doesn't mean I don't know it's an English/Scouse accent. I'm a Nigerian who has never left the shores of this country, but when an Indian speaks English, I can detect it even in an inebriated state. I don't understand a single Yoruba or Hausa language, so it automatically means if someone speaks it I wouldn't be able to know the languages? ![]() |
Ishilove:I think her accent is called the Queen's ![]() Her accent, whatever it is called, is what most England/UK movies like Harry Potter uses so that majority of the viewers can understand them. |
Ishilove:LMAO @mtcheew. I knew you'd be only interested in hard copies only. I'm not much fan of novels but the I prefer hardcopies too. Hard copies are 100% better than E-copies. I find it really hard to read novels from a laptop. I prefer holding a book and lying down anyhow I like, or anywhere and enjoy my reading. I have hardcopies of all Dan Brown's novels. I doubt you'd find easily someone that has most of Agatha's hardcopies. |
Ishilove:I don't even know, someone that lives or had lived in UK will be more able to say the Queen's accent. All I know is that I understand her when she speaks, so whatever her accent may be, it's very easy to understand. There are some English accents that you'll struggle to comprehend. |
Ishilove:You too like novels. ![]() I have them in PDF (E-format) format not in hardcopies. |
KoiceReloaded:You dey try sha. I can't differentiate most of these accents especially a Glaswegian accent from an Edinburgh accent and a Cork accent from a Derry's own. |
KoiceReloaded:I forgot to add the emboldened in my earlier posts. Some of these accents are also hard to understand if someone that doesn't have a deep knowledge of them or if one didn't grow up in the UK. I once watched a BBC documentary and most of the interviewees had Scouce accents and I was really struggling to grab what they're saying. They're speaking English but yet it sounded so strange to me. |
Ishilove:LOL. Your own is on another level. I wasn't even angry at Koice, don't mind my feigning of anger. I've had about 10 Agatha's novels with me for over 5 years now and my laziness stopped me from reading any of them. I deserve that spoiler from Koice. Next time I'll learn how to stop procrastinating and go get the job done. ![]() |
oyetpel:Not true. There is a typical Russian intonation that you can hear from many Russians when they speak English. Same thing applies to a French indigene who speaks English. When he or she does speak English, it'll very audible to even a deaf person that he or she is French. Watch this movie called Just Go With It. The guy in movie was an American but he mimicked the French intonation of speaking English. As a Nigerian, if a typical England born and raised speaks the England intonation, I'll be able to spot it very easily. |
oyetpel:It'll not be a hit if mass produced, if not a smart business man would've thought about the idea. With or without equipment, person wey wan cheat, go cheat. |
KoiceReloaded:You've already posted the spoiler for the novel and I already know the killer before I'll embark on reading the novel. Koice, the spoiler King, why?
|
KoiceReloaded:It's last two years when I read the Wikipedia page of Mindhunters that I saw the movie was adapted from Agatha Christie's novel: And Then There Was None. My laziness for reading books had prevented me from reading that novel and Agatha's works in general, but I think I'll check out the novel this movie was adapted from to compare with your appraisal. Seems like the book was more interesting than the movie. |
They even had to tie her husband with a rubber cuff when handcuff was there all along. The producers of The Blacklist can be pretty dumb as well. |
I'm watching The Blacklist season 1 and I've to agree with some posters that said some female characters can be pretty annoying sometimes, example Agent Keen. Very dumb and annoying. Her stupidity just made her husband found out he's being followed. |
Dotng:The movie is useless. Don't download it. |

Funjosh:Rampage is a good movie. I've seen movies with similar storyline, but it's still a cool movie. |

What a butthurt and jealous toad, who's sad CR7 is outshining his dwarf midget friend, Messi. If only Messi was scoring those freekicks and Pk, his country wouldn't be seeing Ahmed Musa as their saviour and not Messi. Mumu Fabregas. |
KoiceReloaded:I haven't watched the TV show but I've read about it. The movie has a poor rating (I found out last 3 years when I started making use of ratings), but just watch it like that. I hope you'll enjoy it same way I did 9 years ago. |
KoiceReloaded:It feels weird. Being on the opposite sides sounds more fun. ![]() Have you watched that Mindhunters movie I suggested few posts above? You'd watch it if you haven't. Though, I think you have seen it. |
Emekus92:Ip Man, The Rock, Undisputed, Kill Bill vol 1&2, Priest, Bourne Ultimatum series, War Horse, The Saint (the one acted by Val Kilmer), Armageddom, The Bone Collector, The Machurian Candidate, Gangs of New York, The Inside Man, Shoot 'em Up (this movie is funny as hell), Hell Boy, The Prestige, Count of Monte Cristo, Wanted, Salt, The Sum of all Fears, Live Free or Die Hard, District 9, District B13, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Underworld, V for Vendetta, Man on Fire, Mr and Mrs Smith, Inglorious Basterds. |
KoiceReloaded:That's what I'm saying as well. The formation they started with was 352, but because they weren't playing to its strength, they ended up looking confused, deviating from the initial instruction. It's in the second-half that the players maximised the use of that formation and involved wing-play that they ignored in the first-half. Anyway, I understand what you're trying to say now. That is, the 352 Rohr used initially was meant to deceive the Iceland players while his players were actually instructed to play in a 4231 formation. But by second-half, they played the 352 which they had actually started with. |
