Superhumanist, I didn't even notice this gender-swapping trend till you mentioned it this morning. Maybe it's the fact that I was oblivious of the fact that 2016 Ghostbusters was a remake of the all-male cast of the first Ghostbusters.
I really don't think gender-swapping trend is becoming that rampant, maybe I'll need more examples before I can conclude so. I think what we saw in the latest Ocean's 8 and 2016 Ghostbusters, was just directors/producers trying to come up with new ideas to add a bit of spice to those movies. Like, they wanted to try out new ideas instead of refurbishing an already worn-out storyline. Like you already pointed out, it wasn't a great success not because of the gender-swapping/all-female cast, but because of the poor script/storyline.
2016 Ghostbusters was poorly directed. Their jokes were very dry. It had surprisingly high rating, but the Ghostbusters that I watched was average. Only Melissa McCarthy was able to salvage what was left of the reputation of the film. Even if it wasn't a gender-swapped movie, it'd have still sucked with that storyline. All-female cast films (not necessarily gender-swapped ones) can be a box office success with good reviews with the right right actresses and good storylines. E.g: Charlie's Angels and Girls Trip.
Also, most all-female cast movies are rarely big hits like their all-male counterparts, that's an angle you should also consider. Heck, even movies with a female as the lead/major character - especially action or superhero movies - are rarely successful save for few like Wonder Woman and Kill Bill vol 1 & 2. Movies like Tomb Raider (both versions), Cat Woman, Aeon Flux were all major flops at the box office. |

newjosboy: Revenge. Apart from the gore and action, some of the stunts they pulled is unacceptable. 1. She survived being impaled by that sharp tree trunk without any damage to her internal organs. C'mon mehn. I don't buy that. 2. Coming out of it without major bleeding is bullshyt. 3. After placing that hot flat can of beerbon that massive injury and the print from the can appeared on her skin exactly as it were on the can, is another goof It was supposed to appear laterally reversed, just like in the mirror. 4. And to say the massive wound healed in one night, that's less than 24 hours is stupid of the director. 5. A corpse thrown in the river to swell and float just from night to morning is not feasible. 6. That massive injury she dealt the last guy in the penthouse plus the heavy bleeding was supposed to kill him instantly. But I wonder how he got the strength to keep running upandan the house. That movie is 4/10. The fantastical black aphrodisiac she took that made her heal up so fast. The film had a lot of unacceptable stunts, sha. It's just an adrenaline rush movie. Trying to make sense out of the movie is a waste of time. |

KoiceReloaded: Well, in the comic, she has special abilities, whilst in the movie, she's just very athletic, and pretty good with her hands, none are special abilities imo. Just admit it man, she's just poorly written. DC are not known for their stellar movie making.
In Infinity War, Marvel found a way to cram a lot of superhereos into a 3hrs movie, and each character were well written and have just enough screen time to strut their stuff. 5 seconds is just about enough to just people what you're really capable of. The script writer(s)/director is to be blamed, it's up to them to display more of her abilities which they didn't. Suicide Squad generally was a huge disappointment even though it's a commercial success, so you shouldn't be surprised that the qualities you're seeking for never materialised. The film had an average plot. DC Comics are still lagging behind in quality representation of their comic heros. |

superhumanist: The most painful thing is that I want there to be more black producers/directors in Hollywood but this guy is a minus I have high hopes for F Gary Gray (in movies section) and Shonda Rhimes (in TV shows). Both are fantastic. Tyler is a minus. |

Ishilove: I am sure I will like how it ended because I'm seeing the juxtapositioning of the events as narrated by the lead character, with the reality as seen from the POV of her husband. The ending of the movie was a colossal disappointment for me. I expected more. It turned out to have a Nollywood-esque ending. When you're done with the movie, I'll explain why the ending is boring to me |

Ishilove: For Coloured Girls. .. My favourite line into the entire movie is "Sometimes I sit with my crotch open so I can get some sunlight". I even had it as signature here for a period of time
I'm watching Acrimony. So far so good, I haven't been able to tear my eyes off the screen. My lappy just died that why I'm back here. I haven't finished the movie but all I can say is wow!!!!! I'm so loving it. Seriously For Coloured Girls is very interesting. It's the only Tyler's film I can even keep on my hard drive. The rest are just bleh. Im not surprised that you've enjoyed Acrimony so far, I will await your judgement when you see how it ended. |

Ishilove: I'm watching Acrimony next. I have a feeling it may appeal to me. The downside is I will be watching it with a critical eye.
People need to start watching movies not just for entertainment and action , but the underlying messages. Anyone who says Quiet Place is boring obviously watched it for entertainment purposes alone. You may probably enjoy Acrimony, I did though not so much, but was disappointed because of the whole praises it received that made me rush to download it only for it to turn out to be average. If it hadn't received wide acclaims it received on this thread, I'd have watched it with the average expectations I usually employ in all Tyler Perry's movies. It did receive poor ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, though. The best Tyler Perry movie for me remains For Coloured Girls. The rest are average or a bit above average. |

IKON360: is it a rule that a Black American movie has to be about a husband cheating on his wife?? Even this Acrimony? Abeg I need a black American movie about anything that doesn't have anything to do with infidelity? Thank you It's not all black American movies that are that way, but mostly TYLER PERRY'S movies. Tyler Perry needs to move away from his regular romantic/relationship drama if he wants to get the recognition he wants, especially if he wants his movies taken serious. His movies are never blockbusters nor gross highly because he's limited. If He wants to move to the realm of directors like Scorsese, Ridley Scott, Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, Tarantino, Clint Eastwood, etc, then he needs to bring up innovative ideas to his movies. He needs to be versatile. Take up other movie genres that are thought-provoking and imaginative. I guess he's content with being just rich and not aiming high. |

Ishilove: I finally watched 'A Quiet Place'. As i shut my laptop down, I sighed...a sigh of pleasure.
How can anyone say this movie is boring or overrated? I mean, what the flying fvck??!
The horror and tension, especially from the middle was relentless. It is very unique movie, exploring the theme of survivalism in the midst of the chaos caused by the ruckus of technology. We live noisy lives vis endless chatter, music, louspeakers, phones, vehicles, even toys. What if all the noise attracted carnivorous monsters that feed off that noise? Can we survive? Can we stay a week without technology. We see a family thriving and adapting to lives without noise, albeit living. in fear.
The movie also proved that you don't need dialogue to make it a success. The river scene between father and son was the only scene with dialogue, yet it was able to fully integrate with the rest of the movie and build it.
The ending brought tears to my eyes though. Well, almost brought tears. It was so sad...
For the theme alone, I give this movie 9.5/10. Beautiful movie. One of the best so far this year. I was really shocked that some people placed A Quiet Place and boring in the same sentence. That movie is one of the best movies this year so far. But then again, different strokes for different peeps. We all can't love the same thing. Just like Acrimony was average at best for me, yet some people lauded it as very interesting. |

KoiceReloaded: This is not technically a spoiler, just a speculation. There is a huge plothole in the Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom that still bugs me. It kind of ruined the whole movie for me, so I have decided to draw parallels from other movies with huge plot altering holes.
- Suicide Squad: have no idea what that chick was up to. Y'know, the pretty one with the baseball bat. Others have something that made them integral part of the team, but what made her as important? Anyone can swing a baseball bat. This sh*t still bugs me. She's an integral part of the comic book and Joker's partner in crime. Since the storyline is lifted from the comic book, all the characters have to be represented whether they played a major role or not. Dropping her character would've incensed fans. She and Joker are both stark raving psychopaths who just want to kill with or without reasons. |

I generally love crime (especially one involving serial killers) movies/TV shows. Apart from CSI, recommend other TV shows similar to Criminal Minds with lot of deaths and profilers or cops solving them. |

Ishilove: Beorn_, do you know I've not been able to download 'A Quiet Place'? I went to a site and the thing ended up hanging my computer. Tpdfl doesn't seem straight forward and quite frankly I prefer downloading with Torrent. Those other nasty sites have deceptive plugins that will mess up your browser of you dare fall into their trap. Really? I thought you'd downloaded it since but haven't been chanced to watch it. I don't download with Torrents if not I'd have provided Torrent sites you'd download it from. I'm not a fan of torrents when it comes to downloading movies, I prefer sites like Tfpdl where I'll just see download links and download straight away. How about i give you a link from HD popcorns since Tfpdl might not be compatible with your browser? |

armadeo: I understand your point but it's like saying when the revolution of blacks in Hollywood happened every movie had a black guy then every movie had a black man kissing a white woman then every movie had a lesbian.
There were movies that still had predominantly white cast or black cast members. The current trend is that every tv show has a gay guy in it. Honestly as some one said it's like a must to tick that box, wether white or black or Latino should be made w there must be a gay guy in it. Frankly it sucks.
Nobody cares what you do in the confines of your closet as I am sure nobody cares what I do in mine, just don't come rubbing it in our faces. Exactly. The preponderance of too many gay sex in most recent series is off-putting. They'd tone it a bit down instead of using every series as avenue to show support to LGBT community. |

oyetpel: Beorn, koice and the rest you don't understand what superhumanist argument is about.
Whites consider blacks to be inferior to them, black actors appearing in mainstream movies and getting big roles was like Hollywood shoving black people in the minds of whites extremists.
Having a black man kissing and romance a white women disgust the white conservatives and extremists.
But these scenarios were great breakthrough for blacks to be something in society.
Lesbianism was shoved down to the throats of staunch Christians and Catholics, something they see as forbidden for women to lay with women. But they of these you people love lesbians, because Hollywood made it seem okay.
Now it's the turn of gays are you people are complaining, isn't that double standard?
People run to American today because of freedom and how they have accommodated diversity from religion to sexual orientation. Even moslems rush there.
If that's not progressiveness i don't know how you people see it. I understand perfectly what Superhumanist was implying, I'm just saying the producers of the recent series should tone it down a bit because they're now making it look like they have been mandated to make every new series have gay acts in it. I have no problem with gays, but naturally the sight of two men kissing will always disgust me. It's just my nature. Since I can't stop the producers from infusing gay sex left, right and center, I just have to save my sanity by steady fast forwarding any gay scenes. |

superhumanist: Subjective.
How much is too much? Right now as we speak, thousands, if not millions of gay people are having sex in America. Why should this not be represented in American media?
It is growing because america is becoming more progressive I do not care that gay people are having sex. What someone does in the confines of his room as long it's legal and consensual doesn't make me cringe. But, When I get to see it in every series I'm watching, I naturally get put off by it. Even if they want to represent it, they don't necessarily have make it suddenly rampant in every series like they're instructed to do so. Are you saying without the recent influx of gay scenes, America wouldn't be more progressive? I don't see how the recent trend is crucial to the progress of America. |
