HealthUNIOSUN Resident Doctors Embark On Strike Over Insecurity by BethiMcCauley(op): 2:44pm On Jul 30, 2022
Thav TV

Tired and pushed to their limits, the resident doctors at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital have embarked on a 72 hour strike due to the lack of proper and effective security within the hospital complex.

After an emergency meeting on Friday, the 29th of July, the resident doctors in a statement signed by the President, Doctor Ilori S. O, said the association of resident doctors at the hospital decided to withdraw its service over incessant attack on staff of the hospital.
According to the ARD leadership, “The rate and impact of unprovoked attacks on our members are alarming, depressive and dangerous. In the last 2 months there have been repeated records of at least four dreadful attacks on our members. Certain individuals with intentions to cause physical harm and kill, unleashed unprovoked attacks on hospital staffs, were unchecked for more than 40 minutes on Thursday, 28th July, 2022.”

“Cause of the attack is the death of a patient that suffered severe head injury and was managed at the Accident and Emergency Unit of our Hospital. As soon as the index patient was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state, aggressive resuscitating measures were commenced which included fluid resuscitation, oxygen therapy and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. However, the patient suffered cardiac arrest and died despite all measures.”
“The A&E team and the medical doctors informed the patient relatives who in turn unleashed insults, brought out dangerous objects to harm our members. This caused commotion, members fled for their lives; some locked themselves at the toilets and various rooms while many were injured.”

The association demanded for Armored Personnel Carrier, presence of trained security officers, a Security Post at both entrances of the hospital, immediate organisation of security structure in the hospital to forestall recurrence.
“In view of the depressing lack of security in the hospital, members of our Association have been asked to withdraw all forms of Emergency and clinical services in the Hospital except for patients already on admission for the next 72 hours when there shall be another EGM of our Association to re-appraise the security structure in the hospital,” the statement added.

Nairaland GeneralPeoples Gazette Head Office At Abuja Raided By The Nigerian Police Force by BethiMcCauley(op): 3:56pm On Jul 22, 2022
Thav TV

On Friday the 22nd of July 2022, the Peoples Gazette head office, located opposite NNPC Quarters in Utako, Abuja, was raided by the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), allegedly under the directive of the Nigerian government.

According to reports from Peoples Gazette, at about 12:35 p.m. five armed police officers arrested one of the papers editors, John Adenekan, that was reportedly after breaking into the paper’s office, and later came back to arrest four staff members, they include; Ameedat Adeyemi, Grace Oke, Sammy Ogbu and Justina Tayani.

The reports say that the officers while demanding to see Samuel Ogundipe, the Managing Editor and Adefemola Akintade, a reporter, said the arrests were made in relation to publication made by the paper on the 23rd of June, a story which is said to have been about how “anti-graft ICPC raided a property belonging to chief of army staff, Tukur Buratai and recovered cash and luxury items.”

Further stating that, “the ICPC confirmed the recovery, and anti-corruption groups demanded a thorough investigation and prosecution of Mr Buratai, who was responsible for the 2020 massacre of Nigerians at Lekki Toll Gate.”

However, Peoples Gazette has it that both journalists sought after by the Nigerian Police Force were currently unavailable at the moment which led the NPF to arrest Mr John Adenekan in their stead, which is perpetuating an unconstitutional tradition of arresting associates in the event that people of interest are unavailable.

Mr Adenekan said he was being taken to the Utako police division following the raid, which comes as the Buhari regime gets increasingly angry with the paper’s brand of journalism.

“Muhammadu Buhari may cry about what and what shouldn’t be his legacy, but this unwarranted onslaught on our journalists today, one of many we have suffered since we launched PG in September 2020, will forever live in infamy for his despotic regime,” Mr Ogundipe said.

The Gazette claims it has faced several attacks since its inception in September 2020, which according to the paper is aimed at “intimidating its journalists,” some of which over time include; the restriction of access to its website in January 2021 and the invasion of the same head office in January 2022 by the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).

Music/RadioP-square Releases Two New Singles by BethiMcCauley(op): 1:51pm On Jul 22, 2022
Thav TV

The Nigerian afrobeats musical legends P-Square, which consist of twin brothers Peter and Paul Okoye have released two new hot singles titled ‘Jaiye (Ihe Geme)’ and ‘Find Somebody.’ The release of the singles commemorates their coming back together, as these would be the first songs released by the duo since their reunion.
The duo who released their first debut album titled ‘Last Nite’ in 2001, officially disbanded in September of 2017, supposedly over a disagreement about the role of their manager. On that note the brothers began pursuing individual music careers, with Peter taking on the name ‘Mr. P’ and Paul going by ‘Rudeboy.’

Although both successful in their individual music careers, fans and followers had always yearned for a reunion, and on the 17th of November 2021, the duo ended their long time feud and reconciled to the anticipation of everyone.
Fans have since been waiting for the release of new tracks from the now reunited P-Square, and after a teaser of the songs were released a week ago, on the 22nd of July, the brothers finally released two new singles, ‘Jaiye’ and ‘Find Somebody’ with a music video for ‘Jaiye’ which had fans and followers well pleased.

While, ‘Jaiye’ is a party song, with a dance-pop kind of vibe accompanied by an Amapiano sound, ‘Find Somebody’ on the other hand, is a classic P-Square wedding themed song, which comes as no surprise as the brothers are famous for releasing great wedding tunes.

PoliticsMuslim-muslim Ticket Made Me Reject Tinubu As Running Mate In 2007 – Atiku by BethiMcCauley(op): 12:37pm On Jul 22, 2022
Thav TV

The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar discloses why himself and the All Progressive Congress (APC), Presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu have a rather sour relationship.
According to him, the squabble began in 2007, when Tinubu wanted to field him a Muslim-Muslim ticket, which he refused.
He said that this occurred under the then Action Congress (AC) political party, no longer functional, which had Atiku as its presidential candidate. Atiku said Tinubu wanted him to be his running mate. The Action Congress was established by Atiku, Tinubu and other political heavy weights.

Atiku said then when he presented his alternative option in the person of Ben Obi, to Tinubu, he was displeased with the choice, still insistent that Atiku make him his running mate.

Although Atiku eventually lost the election to late President Umar Yar’Adua of the PDP, his relationship with Tinubu had already gone south.
Speaking with Arise TV on Friday, Atiku said he became politically estranged with Tinubu after he presented Obi as his running mate.
He said: “He insisted on running with me and I didn’t believe it was right to have a Muslim-Muslim ticket.
“That was the point of my fundamental departure with him.”

PoliticsPeter Obi Receives Endorsement Of North Eastern Elders by BethiMcCauley(op): 2:01pm On Jul 16, 2022
Thav TV

In anticipation of the 2023 Presidential Elections, Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi has received endorsement from some elders Of the North Eastern part of the country, according to the elders, he is the best choice for modern Nigeria.

ThavMedia had earlier reported on Friday, July 15th that Peter Obi had paid a visit to the Chairman of Northern Elders Forum, Prof Ango Abdullahi. It is safe to say that his visit was rewarding as the North East Elders operating under the aegis of Coalition of North East Elders for Peace and Development (CNEEPD), have denounced the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying that the action of the party would not enjoy their blessings as according to them, it did not promote equity and fairness in a diverse Nigeria.

The elders speaking in a statement released on Saturday the 16th of July, 2022, said APC’s action was seen as the “highest level of madness and an evil agenda in Nigeria,” going on to remind the promoters of the same faith ticket to revisit Nigeria’s past and see if their action were in line with what founders of Nigeria’s democracy preached and practiced.

Noting that Nigeria was a secular country that no religion should be elevated against others, the elders tasked APC to reflect on its action given that Nigeria of today had shifted from 1993 where such was promoted without any opposition.

The North East elders also added that APC should not to be comfortable with their action, saying the rigging which it was relying upon as party in government will fail them woefully as according to them, Nigerians would vote and safeguard their votes without fear or intimidations from APC’s hired agents.

Engr. Zana Goni, the National Coordinator of CNEEPD, speaking on behalf of the group insisted that contrary to APC’s expectation, it would lose the presidential poll before 12 noon, adding that “indications across the country were not in favour of the party that had put Nigeria in its present bad situation.”

The statement read in part:”As the 2023 general elections draws near,we the Coalition of North East Elders for Peace and Development have noted with concerns some actions and statements by some political parties and actors in our democratic process. The latest being the impunity orchestrated by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in settling for a same faith ticket in a multi-religious,multi-ethnic and above all,multi-cultural country like Nigeria and the party’s defence of the absurd action in the face of widespread opposition to the abnormalities.

“As leaders who have not only monitored but also actively contributed to political developments in Nigeria for decades,we wish to categorically denounce the APC’s action which we view as inimical to the progress and growth of Nigeria.

“Without mincing words, we describe the party’s decision in fielding Muslim Muslim ticket in the 2023 presidential election as the highest level of madness, insensitivity, and an evil agenda against our dear country which we have laboured for years to build. This decision which threatens the unity of the country does not have our blessings and must be resisted by all Nigerians of good conscience. Anything contrary will threaten the fragile unity and peace of Nigeria.”

The elders added:” We wonder why a sane man and sane political party will contemplate and even go ahead to pick a Muslim as running mate to a Muslim candidate in a presidential election in secular country as Nigeria at this modern age.”

According to the group, “To make the matter worse, they picked Alhaji Kashim Shetima, a man whose alleged link with terrorism is still a subject of debate in public domain.”

Noting that, “This is a costly mistake that must be resisted at poll by all Nigerians, irrespective of religion, tribe or ethnic backgrounds in the interest of peace”, the group said:” If this madness is allowed to see the light of the day, the unity and peace of Nigeria will be threatened forever.”

“How can someone tries this in Nigeria? As it stands together Christians and Muslims have started supporting candidates based on religious lines, in mosques and churches across the country. This is not what we need now.

“The peace in Nigeria is too fragile to contemplate this kind of madness as exhibited by the ruling APC. The party has actually made more Nigerians to believe that they have an Islamization agenda as widely speculated,” it said.

The group alleged that attacks on INEC facilities in the South East are orchestrated by some political interest groups to reduce the voting strength of the region.

“Given the carefully coordinated attacks launched in recent times on both INEC personnel and facilities, we will not be wrong to believe that the actions are carefully calculated, planned, and executed by suspected Boko Haram terrorists with aim to disenfranchised the people of South East and also put them in the bad light.

“Security agencies must clamp down on these evil people and bring them to book immediately,” it said.

“We also urge all the South East communities to constitute a special task force to protect INEC facilities and officials across the zone,” it tasked the region.

“We call on all Nigeria’s to resist this evil and selfish agenda of Muslim Muslim ticket with every legal means. The current level of hunger and terrorism in the North today does not respect the Muslim or any religion hence Muslims must look beyond the lies APC is selling to us. We must vote credible leaders with capacity and programme for our dear country,” the elder advised.

Terrorists had on Tuesday night attacked the facility, freeing hundreds of inmates, among them fellow terrorists.

He tweet just before President Buhari visited the Prison. President Muhammadu Buhari has visited Kuje to see the extent of destruction terrorists caused during the attack on Tuesday.

I am concerned and saddened by reports of the attack on Kuje Prison by suspected terrorists. My concern arises not only from the prospects of the escape of detained terrorists and hardened criminals but of its implications

for the security of lives and property to residents of Abuja and its environs.

I wish to restate what I said to @THISDAYLIVE on Monday that our inability to enthrone a regime of law & order in which the arrest and prosecution of criminals will be made a priority as a deterrent to copycats is the reason why insecurity continues to fester in our country.-AA

Foreign AffairsAbout 6 Dead In Mass Shooting At July 4 Parade by BethiMcCauley(op): 10:34pm On Jul 04, 2022
Gun violence has been an issue for over the years across the US, drawing condemnation and calls for gun control, especially in the aftermath of mass shootings.

July 4th’s shooting in Highland Park, a community north of Chicago was catastrophic. Witnesses described seeing bloodied bodies covered with blankets. The Chicago Sun-Times newspaper reported that parade began around 10am local time (15:00 GMT) but was suddenly halted 10 minutes later after shots were fired. “Everybody disperse, please. It is not safe to be here.” police said.

Amarani Garcia, who came to the parade with her young daughter, told the local ABC affiliate she heard gunfire nearby, then a pause for what she suspected was reloading, and then more shots again.

There were “people screaming and running. It was just really traumatising”, Garcia said. “I was very terrified. I hid with my daughter actually in a little store. It just makes me feel like we’re not safe anymore.”

US Congressman Brad Schneider, whose district includes Highland Park, said “Hearing of loss of life and others injured,” Schneider wrote on Twitter. “My condolences to the family and loved ones; my prayers for the injured and for my community; and my commitment to do everything I can to make our children, our towns, our nation safer. Enough is enough!”

Late last month, US President Joe Biden signed into law the first major federal gun reform in 30 years.

No Fuel. No Cash. Finding Money Is A Challenge – Sri Lanka Bows
Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told Al Jazeera last week the petrol shortage will last until July 22 when the next oil shipment is expected. Ranil said a gas deal has been secured which will ensure supplies for the next four months.

“It [fuel shortage] is a big setback to the economy and has caused lot of hardship to people. When we came in, the shortage of dollars actually contributed to this situation. We have been taking steps since then especially to get gas which will be available in the next few days, diesel and furnace oil as well,” he said.

“The issue has been petrol … and that will take a bit of time. We are hoping to get shipment of petrol by July 22 but I have asked the [concerned] minister to try to get the shipment earlier.”

Last week, Sri Lanka announced a two-week halt to all fuel sales except for essential services to save petrol and diesel for emergencies.

“Finding money is a challenge. It’s a huge challenge,” the minister said.

There are reports of sporadic clashes outside fuel stations. Just last week, troops opened fire to disperse a mob protesting against the military jumping the queue.

In Colombo, protesters have been occupying the entrance to the president’s office for more than two months to demand President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation. Protesting that the President has turned the presidency to family business with several siblings who hold top government positions, of plunging the country into the crisis through corruption and misrule.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) will continue to hold talks with Sri Lanka for a possible $3bn bailout package, the global lender said last week, after wrapping up a 10-day visit to Colombo.

PoliticsINEC Office In Enugu Burnt Down By Unknown Arsonists by BethiMcCauley(op): 9:16pm On Jul 04, 2022
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Igbo-Eze North local government area of Enugu was burnt down by some unknown arsonists; this happened on Sunday the 3rd of July. According to a report by The Nation, the affected office located at the council’s headquarters in Ogurute was totally destroyed on the night of Sunday.

The newspaper further stated that the state’s fire service around the area could not move in to quench the flames as operatives were scared that the assailants might attack again.

According to eyewitness report, by the time security officers arrived at the scene, the building was completely destroyed by the fire.

The sources added that the only thing the two fire trucks from Nsukka and Ogurute were able to do was to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby offices. No casualties, documents and properties destroyed.

Mr. Emeka Ononamadu, the resident electoral commissioner for Enugu, said;

“Although no casualties were reported, 748 ballot boxes, 240 voting cubicles, office furniture, and equipment were destroyed in spite of the best effort of the Enugu State Fire Service deployed from Nsukka.”

“The commission is working to ascertain the status of voter registration machines for the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise as well as uncollected Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) locked up in the fireproof cabinet.”

“The incident has been reported to the Nigeria Police for investigation and further action.”

“The attack, coming in the middle of the voter registration exercise and other preparations for 2023 general election, is worrisome. It will be recalled that on 23rd May 2021, our office in the neighbouring Igboeze South Local Government Area was attacked in a similar manner by unknown gunmen. This followed earlier attacks on Udenu Local Government Area office on 13th May 2021 and the State Headquarters in Enugu on 16th May 2021. The Commission has since substantially recovered from these attacks and resumed normal activities there, including the CVR and collection of PVCs.”

“The Commission will continue to work with the security agencies and the emergency services to protect our facilities.”
