DRC (International Christian Concern) – More than 10 Christians were killed on Tuesday, June 21, when an Islamist extremist group ambushed their three vehicles in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The attack occurred near the village of Makisabo, Beni. The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an Islamist extremist group, allegedly blocked the road, shot all the passengers, and set the vehicles on fire.

Activities along the Beni-Kasindi Road have since been halted. International Christian Concern (ICC) spoke to one of the taxi operators along this route, which is the only corridor connecting Uganda and the eastern region of the DRC.

“The 5 p.m. incident led to the death of our fellow drivers and our customers who wanted to reach home and be with their families,” said the taxi operator. “We are saddened that the ADF rebels continue to make our lives difficult here in Congo. There is no single day that they do not kill people. The villages are unsafe. The roads are unsafe. The towns are unsafe. We only live by God’s mercy. Now we cannot work because they have attacked Makisabo. We don’t know how long this will take before the road is opened again .”

This attack comes a day after the East African Community (EAC) heads of state convened in Nairobi, Kenya, led by its chair, President Uhuru Kenyatta, to discuss the security situation in the eastern region of the DRC. The participants agreed to accelerate regional efforts to “attain sustainable peace and security in Eastern DRC,” deploy more forces to conduct joint operations with the Congolese military, and call for a disarmament “exercise in the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu.”

Church leaders have condemned the attack, calling it an atrocity against Christians.
We know the war situation in Congo is complex, but we cannot ignore the fact that the rebel groups are targeting Christians,” explained a local bishop. “We have evidence that the killers have established ties with [the] Islamic State (ISIS) and survivors have confessed to us that they were asked to recite the shahada if they wanted to survive. We have pastors that have been killed for refusing to deny Christ and get Islamized. We are asking for prayers and support to take care of millions of refugees, widows, and orphans.”

On Friday, June 17, while traversing the war-torn zone of Beni territory, ICC staff witnessed the aftermath of a fresh attack on travelers. They saw that a vehicle had been ambushed and set on fire along the Beni-Butembo Road. All five passengers were also killed.

ICC’s representative reported, “The ADF rebels had laid siege on the same road we were driving through, and we drove past the scene of the attack when the burnt bodies had been collected and the car shell was still smoking. As scary as it was, we sympathized with the residents and prayed for the affected families.

After having several dreams about Christ, 28-year-old Hawa Amoti of Nansana, Wakiso District visited a Christian neighbor early [in] the morning, said the neighbor, unidentified for security reasons.

“Amoti came to our home very early in the morning and needed to know more of Issa [Jesus], whom she had seen in a dream,” he said. “After explaining to her about eternal life and forgiveness of sin that comes from Jesus who came to take away the sins of the whole world, she willingly accepted Jesus for the salvation of her soul. I then prayed for her, and then together we went to church in Nansana.”

After the church service, Amoti joined the neighbor’s family for lunch at his home and stayed until about 5:45 p.m., when she left for her home, he said.

Her father, Haji Shariifu Agaba, and brothers had already learned that she had been seen worshipping Christ at church when she arrived outside their home, one of her siblings said. Agaba ordered his sons to seize and beat her, then took a sharp knife and pierced her eyes, said a brother of Amoti who tried to defend her.

“I want to remove these eyes so that you stop seeing churches forever – even if you die, we are not going to bury you,” Agaba told her, according to the brother, whose name is withheld for security reasons.

Amoti’s wailing and screaming drew neighbors who rushed over to rescue her, the Christian neighbor said. As more members of the community arrived, Agaba and his sons went inside their house.

Neighbors arranged for a vehicle to rush Amoti to a nearby hospital, where she succumbed to profuse bleeding from her eye injuries, sources said.

Community leaders in Nansana condemned the attack and vowed to arrest and charge Agaba, they said.

As the world celebrated 'International Yoga Day' on Tuesday, an angry mob of muslims[/] entered the Maldives national football stadium on Tuesday morning and disrupted the International Yoga Day celebrations which were being held by the Maldives government in association with the Indian Cultural Center.

The event that started at 6:30 AM was stopped after the [i]mob barged in. Police had to use tear gas shells to disperse the agitated Islamists to ensure the situation did not turn into a physical altercation.

Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih issued a statement and said an investigation had been launched into the incident that had happened at the Galolhu Stadium.

“An investigation has been launched by Maldives Police into the incident that happened this morning at Galolhu stadium. This is being treated as a matter of serious concern, and those responsible will be swiftly brought before the law,” he said.

On Sunday, June 19, the staff of the government-run Rural health centre (RHC) in the Sindh province in Pakistan reportedly cut off a newborn baby’s head and left the severed head in the mother’s womb, putting the woman’s life in jeopardy.

The woman was identified as 32-year-old Hindu woman from Bheel community. She was rushed to a neighbouring hospital in Mithi, but there were no medical facilities available to treat her. Her family eventually took her to Jamshoro’s Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), where the newborn’s severed head was removed from the mother’s womb, saving her life….

On Sunday, a RHC staff cut off the unborn baby’s head and left it in the mother’s womb, he added.

Sikandar further informed the baby’s head was entrapped inside and the mother’s uterus had been ruptured and they had to open up her abdomen surgically and take out the head to save her life.

Only after the news of the horrifying incident went viral did the Pakistani government intervene and directed authorities to form a medical investigation board to investigate the tragedy and find the perpetrators….

Dr Juman Bahoto added that the inquiry panel will also examine reports that stated that some hospital staff took pictures and shot videos of the woman while she was lying on a stretcher fighting for her life. “Apparently, some members of the staff took her photos on a mobile phone in the gynaecology ward and shared those pictures with different WhatsApp groups,” Juman added.

Imam Mahmoud denies he committed a crime and says that he was only quoting the Koran.

In a sermon, the Malmö imam Basem Mahmoud called Jews “offspring of pigs and apes.” Now he is being charged with incitement against a people. Mahmoud denies the crime and says that he was only reading the Koran.

“When one reads the Koran, one cannot change anything,” states Mahmoud.

In October of 2020, Imam Basem Mahmoud gave a sermon in his mosque in Malmö that was hostile to Christians as well as anti-Semitic. He accused Christians, Jews, Shia Muslims, and police authorities of conspiring with each other in a “snakes’ nest” — synagogue — against faithful Muslims.

The imam talks about “the great battle” when all non-Muslims will be forced to submit themselves to Muslims and prays to Allah that the Islamic God will defeat or destroy Christians and Jews.

In part of his sermon, the imam calls Jews “the offspring of pigs and apes.”
“In all times, the same deceptive villains stand in the way of the faithful. Everyone knows that Jews run the Western countries. Jews are their rulers. Jews are the offspring of pigs and apes. They are hostile to Muslims, but they will stand helpless against Islam,” he says.

In a police interrogation, Basem Mahmoud denies the crime. He claims that he is only citing a passage from the Koran, which states that Allah transformed people who did not believe in him into apes and pigs.

“When one reads the Koran, one cannot change anything,” he says in the interrogation.

He also says that he “cannot change his religion for the sake of Jews” and points out that he usually doesn’t call Jews he meets on the street “apes” or “swine.”

It is not the first time that Basem Mahmoud has made controversial statements. Among other things, he previously defended the brutal murder of the French teacher Samuel Paty in 2020. As previously reported by RAIR Foundation USA, a Chechen Muslim refugee living in France decapitated Paty after he taught his annual course to high school students on freedom of expression.

“A person who loves his religion gets angry and slaughters the teacher with a knife in the gutter because the teacher is unclean, and the gutter is the only place he deserves,” he commented on the brutal murder.

“It is a simple equation. One from their side sinned by insulting the Prophet, and one from our side sinned and killed the teacher who insulted the Prophet.”

In another sermon, he went on the attack against social services and schools in Sweden and stated that Muslims are taking over the country.

“Sweden is ours. It is ours, whether they like it or not. In ten to fifteen years, it is ours,” he said in a sermon earlier this year.

In December of last year, Basem Mahmoud’s 17-year-old daughter was taken in by social services. The reason was that the girl reported that she “had been abused psychologically and physically in the home for a long time.” According to court proceedings, the girl lived in a strongly honor-controlled environment.

Basem Mahmoud originally came from the Jordanian capital of Amman. He immigrated to Sweden in 1989 by marrying a Swedish woman who converted to Islam. He has been a Swedish citizen since 1983.

Mahmoud has seven children with the Swedish woman, but the pair are now divorced. According to the woman, Mahmoud, over time, “became more religious and controlling.” Several times she has asked for a restraining order against her former husband, but the court has refused her.

A Pakistan-origin Australian woman named Sajida Tasneem was brutally hacked to death by her father-in-law, Mukhtar Ahmad in Karachi, Pakistan.

Tasneem was allegedly gagged and then hit on the head with an axe, leading to her death. The incident reportedly occurred on June 11 at the home she shared with her in-laws near the city of Sargodha in Pakistan. Her father Sher Muhammad Khan was a witness to the brutal act.

Mukhtar Ahmed, according to reports, was enraged by the prospect of Sajida Tasneem, an engineer by profession, returning to Australia with her children. He is said to have killed her after the two got into an argument about the same.

Sher Muhammad Khan, Tasneem’s father, who was a witness to the incident, told The Guardian , that his daughter’s father-in-law Mukhtar Ahmad had taken away Tasneem’s passport after the latter got into an argument with him about her desire to relocate back to Australia to give her children a better education. Ahmed in a fit of rage first gagged her with a piece of cloth and then attacked her with an axe. Tasneem fell to the ground and died in front of her own father.

Mozambique (International Christian Concern) – ISIS has claimed responsibility for attacks on several Christian villages in Caba Delgado, Mozambique, that happened between May 23 and May 31. Six villages were attacked, leaving 8 people dead. Four of those who were murdered were Christians. Following the attacks, ISIS released photographs of six decapitated bodies, as well as images of the burned villages.

Mozambique is no stranger to Islamic State (IS) attacks. The Islamic State, or its affiliate groups, have killed or displaced thousands of Christians in Mozambique….

Thousands of young women and girls in Iran continue to be subjected to “virginity tests” before marriage despite there being no medical basis for such examinations. Those who fail the tests can be forced to undergo hymen reconstruction or, in some cases, have been the subject of “honor killings.”

The Taliban’s religious police have put up posters across the southern Afghan city of Kandahar saying that Muslim women who do not wear an Islamic hijab that fully covers their bodies are “trying to look like animals”, an official confirmed on Thursday.

Since seizing power in August, the Taliban have imposed harsh restrictions on Afghan women, rolling back the marginal gains they made during the two decades since the US invaded the country and ousted the group’s previous regime.

In May, the country’s supreme leader and Taliban chief Hibatullah Akhundzada approved a decree saying women should generally stay at home.
They were ordered to cover themselves completely, including their faces, should they need to go out in public.

This week, the Taliban’s feared Ministry for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, which enforces the group’s strict interpretation of Islam, put up posters across Kandahar city showing images of burqas, a type of garment that covers a woman’s body from head to toe.

“Muslim women who do not wear the hijab are trying to look like animals”, say the posters, which have been slapped on many cafes and shops as well as on advertising hoardings across Kandahar — the de facto power centre of the Taliban.

Wearing short, tight and transparent clothes was also against Akhundzada’s decree, the posters say.
The ministry’s spokesman in the capital Kabul was not reachable for comment, but a top local official confirmed that the posters were put up.

“We have put up these posters and those women whose faces are not covered (in public) we will inform their families and take steps according to the decree,” Abdul Rahman Tayebi, head of the ministry in Kandahar, told AFP .

Akhundzada’s decree orders authorities to warn and even suspend from government jobs male relatives of women who do not comply.

Outside of Kabul, the burqa, the wearing of which was mandatory for women under the Taliban’s first stint in power, is common.

On Wednesday, United Nations rights chief Michelle Bachelet slammed the Taliban government for its “institutionalised systematic oppression” of women.
“Their situation is critical,” she said.

After returning to power, the Taliban had promised a softer version of their previous harsh system of governance, enforced from 1996 to 2001.

But since August, many restrictions have been imposed on women.

Tens of thousands of girls have been shut out of secondary schools, while women have been barred from returning to many government jobs.

Women have also been banned from travelling alone and can only visit public parks in the capital on days when men are not allowed.

Muhammad asked his companions: “Who will avenge me on this scoundrel?” One of them murdered Abu ‘Afak in his sleep. Likewise with another poet who mocked him: the poetess ‘Asma bint Marwan. Muhammad on another occasion cried out, “Will no one rid me of this daughter of Marwan?” One of Muhammad’s companions, ‘Umayr ibn ‘Adi, went to her house that night, where he found her sleeping next to her children. The youngest, a nursing babe, was in her arms. But that didn’t stop ‘Umayr from murdering her and the baby as well. Muhammad commended him: “You have done a great service to Allah and His Messenger, ‘Umayr!”

Muhammad again asked his companions: “Who is willing to kill Ka’b bin Al-Ashraf who has hurt Allah and His Apostle?” One of the companions, Muhammad bin Maslama, answered, “O Allah’s Apostle! Would you like that I kill him?” When Muhammad said that he would, Muhammad bin Maslama said, “Then allow me to say a (false) thing (i.e. to deceive Kab).” Muhammad responded: “You may say it.” Muhammad bin Maslama duly lied to Ka’b, luring him into his trap, and murdered him.

Amid the political turmoil in the country over Nupur Sharma’s remarks on Prophet Muhammad, Islamic fundamentalists are constantly issuing death threats to her. A video has recently appeared on social media in which an Islamic cleric is seen openly issuing death threats to former BJP leaders Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal at a press conference.

An Islamic cleric named Hamid Engineer was openly threatening Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal in a press conference, saying that ‘insulting Islam means signing own suicide note’. The video was shared by the Middle East Media Research Institute. According to the report, Minorities Democratic Party held a press conference in Nagpur on 5th June 2022.

Hamid Engineer, President of Iman Tanzim Islamic, was present at this press conference. In this press conference, he reacted to the allegedly derogatory remarks about the prophet Muhammad given by former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and former Delhi BJP leaeder Naveen Jindal.

While addressing the press conference, the Islamic scholar openly issued death threats to Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal. Hamid Engineer said, “To attack the honorable Prophet Mohammed and to attack his honor, there is only one consequence of this – and that is death. No one can stop you (from being killed). You are signing a suicide note (by making such remarks). Kamlesh Tiwari was killed after five years. People killed him after five years by entering his home. Don’t think that, if the issue is resolved today, you will be spared. So better you don’t commit blasphemy.”…

Investigators of the State Protection Service were able to prevent the catastrophe at the last minute: Islamist terrorists were planning an explosive attack on this year’s Vienna Marathon on April 24. 30,000 runners were at the start of the event.

Rehmat Masih has been in prison for five months and his family threatened. He had refused to convert to Islam. They blame him for some pages of the sacred text of Muslims found in the sewer drain, but there is no evidence against him.

In Pakistan, an adult Christian, Rehmat Masih, has been in prison for five months in a new fabricated blasphemy case. He is accused of profaning and desecrating the pages of the Koran, but in reality he allegedly simply refused an offer to change religion. The police also threatened the family, warning them not to prosecute the case. As a result, he had to move to a safer location.

Rehmat (44), the father of two teenage children, had worked for 20 years as a cleaner at the Zam Zam publishing house, which was responsible for printing and binding the Muslim holy text. The owners and employees had offered him to convert to Islam, but he had repeatedly refused to change religion.

On 28 December, Rehmat went to Zam Zam Publishers for his usual work. Here, he was asked about the defacement of some pages of the Koran found in the sewage drain. Rehmat replied that he was unaware of the missing holy pages from the publishing house.

On 3 January 2022, the police arrested Rehmat Masih accusing him of committing blasphemy and tortured him severely to make him admit to desecrating and desecrating the Koran, an offence under Section 295-B of the Pakistan Penal Code, punishable by life imprisonment.

On 19 January 2022, a bail application was filed for the defendant, but the judge rejected it. In a hearing held on 31 May 2022, Rehmat Masih had his statement placed on record before the honorary judge, in which he stated that he 'does not plead guilty to the charge of blasphemy brought against him'.

The president of Voice for Justice, Joseph Jansen, said that the blasphemy laws have created an environment in which people, including complainants and their influential supporters, feel entitled to take justice into their own hands. He called for police officers to carry out their duties impartially and for their conduct not to be influenced by religious beliefs.

Ilyas Samuel, a social activist, said that the police investigation was particularly deficient in this blasphemy case. But it is even more disturbing that police officers support illegal practices to turn the fake crime into reality and present false witnesses with conflicting statements before the court of honour to prove a crime that was never committed by the accused.

Malook Samuel described it as unthinkable that - with no eyewitnesses to the alleged event and no evidence - the accused is behind bars, while the complainants and witnesses involved in making false allegations against the accused enjoy impunity, and are not instead prosecuted for charges of perjury under Section 182 of the Penal Code, which provides for sentences of five to seven years.

Pastor Tariq George added that it is regrettable that innocent people are being targeted to settle personal scores, and that this story was created to punish religious minorities who do not want to change their faith.

Iran’s proxy militias are engaged in an "invisible jihad" against Christians in the Middle East and are having success in their efforts to push out and reduce the numbers of Christians, according to a new report.

The report by the Philos Project, a nonprofit organization and community that promotes Christian engagement in the region, says that the Iranian regime envisions Muslim demographic purity and that its militias have "labored to create conditions that forced Christians out."

"Iran’s proxy militias in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria and Yemen have played a significant, though largely unrecognized, role in the dramatic decline of Christians in the region," the report outlines.

"Invisible Jihad -- demographic reduction through coerced emigration -- these militias use extant conflicts to manufacture conditions behind the massive exodus," report author Farhad Rezaei said.

In Lebanon, where the pro-Iran Hezbollah is seen as "particularly culpable" for the reduction of Christians to just 33.7% of the population in 2020, down from 54% in the 1950s. The report details how Hezbollah has targeted missionaries, impeded conversions all while imposing strict dress codes, alcohol bans and limits of mixes sexes in public -- in what have been dubbed "mini-Tehrans"

Ownership of Christian land has also shrunk: "While some of the lands were legally sold by emigrants, a sizable part was lost through eviction and expulsion coordinated by Hezbollah."

In Iraq, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps’ Quds Force was able to create several Shia militia groups. . .

The report details how Christians were chased out of Baghdad with selective killings, robbery and sexual harassment that created a "climate of panic." It also accuses militias of engaging in human trafficking, rape and forced marriage as leaders tried to make Baghdad and elsewhere "Christian-free."

Just as in Lebanon, militias engaged in forced buyouts as well as evictions, expulsions and destruction of private property -- including the burning of acres of crops. Militias have also sought to impose an Islamic lifestyle on residents -- including forced veiling, closing of liquor stores and limiting of Christian worship.

Meanwhile, in Syria, the report details about how the IRGC created several militias within the Shia Liberation Army after the popular uprising against the Assad regime in 2011. In the 10 years that followed, the report says that the Christian community in Syria has shrunk by 70%.

The crimes which the report links Shia militias to include the killing of dozens of Christians, the use of kidnappings for ransoms, torture and confiscation of private property. It cites reports of 124 assaults on churches between 2011 and 2019, with 75 acts of violence including acts of destruction.

"Bombing these churches had no tactical value; it was a deliberate policy to scare the Christians into fleeing," the report says.

The report calls for the State Department to sanction Iran and the commanders of the IRGC for expelling and persecuting Christians, while also urging the United Nations to appoint a special rapporteur to report on the effort by Iran to remove Christians out of the region.

The report comes as talks to revive the 2015 Iran nuclear deal have stalled in Vienna and the Iranian regime has been resorting to increasingly provocative tactics.

The Trump administration left the deal in 2018, and Iran left soon after. The Biden administration has pledged to re-enter the deal and has considered major concessions , but it has not prevented talks from stalling.

The U.N. atomic watchdog said Thursday that Iran has started removing dozens of surveillance cameras from its nuclear sites -- with officials warning it could be a "fatal blow" to efforts to revive the deal.

Germany: Somali muslim man pushes woman in front of arriving train and kicks dog

A 63-year-old woman resident in Munich was on a platform of the suburban railway station at the main station. Suddenly, a 26-year-old man (Somali citizen without permanent residence in Germany) pushed her from behind with both hands against her back, causing her to fall onto the tracks. She was slightly injured by the fall.

Several people who witnessed the incident drew the attention of the driver of an approaching suburban train to the situation with appropriate gestures and he initiated emergency braking. The train came to a halt about fifteen metres in front of the woman, who in the meantime had managed to get into the shelter below the edge of the platform. She was then able to be brought back to the platform with the help of other witnesses. First aid was administered on the spot and the 63-year-old woman was later able to go home.

Other witnesses chased the 26-year-old suspect, who tried to leave the platform on foot, and alerted the police. Shortly afterwards, he was arrested without resistance on the mezzanine floor of the station.

During the initial investigation by the Munich Criminal Investigation Department, it was discovered that the suspect had kicked a dog on the platform shortly before committing his crime.

The police department 11 (intentional homicide) has taken up the investigation of an attempted murder.
The suspect will be brought before the investigating judge in the course of the day to clarify whether an arrest or detention order will be issued.

Cyril Majali died this morning, a man from Mahdi village in Akhmim Center in Sohag, succumbed to his injury after being attacked by an extremist using a cleaver and after three days in intensive care, in an attempt to save him, but the young man died today.

His family said that a prayer was performed over Cyril in the Virgin’s Monastery in Akhmim Mountain, and he is now being transferred to the family’s gravesite, amid anger from the Copts and demands to punish the perpetrator, who mercilessly attacked the victim with a machete. The Copts reject the “mentally deranged” narrative.

The Akhmim Prosecution in Sohag decided to imprison Abdullah Hosni, who had attacked Cyril Majali in Akhmim using a machete, which inflicted serious injuries, fracturing his skull and cutting the tendons of his hand.

The Sohag University Hospital in Sohag received a wounded man named Cyril Najah Majali from the village of Arab Mahdi, Akhmim district, Sohag governorate, who was stabbed several times by a sharp instrument, and his health condition is unstable.

Major General Mohamed Abdel Moneim Sharbash, Assistant Minister of Interior and Director of Sohag Security, received a notification from the Akhmim police station’s warden, stating that a report had been received from Sohag University Hospital about the arrival of a wounded man drenched in blood and with several separate stab wounds to the body, and his health condition was unstable.

Immediately, after the police began their investigation and obtained permission from the Public Prosecution, it was found that the accused, Abdullah Hosni, pushed the victim off his motorcycle and hit him with a machete, which resulted in several skull fractures, a brain hemorrhage, and cut tendons of the hand. The accused was arrested and a report is being prepared.

Medhat Najah, the victim’s brother, said that Abdullah Hosni had previously used to harass Copts, and two years ago he had assaulted another Coptic Christian and was sentenced to one year. He went to Libya to work there and returned two days before committing his crime of assaulting his brother, as his brother, who works in Kuwait, was on vacation and was preparing to travel on his way back to his home, riding a motorcycle. Abdullah Hosni intercepted him, dropped him, and beat him.

He pointed out that the perpetrator tried to claim mental disorder, as his family brought a medical certificate from a special center in an attempt to escape punishment for his crime.

A statement by the Ministry of Interior confirmed that the accused had a previous criminal record, and after his arrest, he confessed to committing the incident and also admitted to getting rid of the cleaver used in the crime in a water bank.

The family appealed to the Attorney General to intervene to restore their brother’s right against this person, who was described as an extremist and who harbors hatred for Christians, and demanded the necessity of revealing the period he lived in Libya and his relationship with terrorist groups.

How do Christian families, most of whom are descendants of the survivors of the 1913-23 Christian genocide, continue to survive in Turkey? How much respect and tolerance are shown towards them by the Muslim society and government of Turkey?

A recent incident targeting the Assyrian Christian natives in a village in southeast Turkey gives us a very clear answer.

On June 6, a service was held in the Mor Gevargis Church in a village of Mardin province for the first time in a hundred years after the Assyrian genocide. The renovation of the church was started in 2015 by the Mardin Assyrian Ancient Foundation.

On the day of the opening ceremony of the renovated church, a group of 50 Muslims attacked the home of the only remaining Assyrian Christian family in the village, with whom the group had a property dispute. The family’s house was reportedly assaulted with stones, sticks, and weapons.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. The aggressors then set the family’s wheat lands on fire. The fire was extinguished before it got out of control, and the gendarmerie took precautions around the fields.

During the attack, the family was hosting guests, including Metropolitan of Mardin, Mor Filüksinos Saliba Özmen, Auxiliary Priest Gabriel Akyüz, and Midyat Mor Jacob Monastery Priest Daniel Savcı.

Assyrians or Syriacs are an indigenous people of Mardin and the wider Tur Abdin region in southeast Turkey. Today there are only around 15,000 Assyrians left in Turkey, and their population collapse is a result of genocide and decades-long persecution.

After Turks conquered Asia Minor and Tur Abdin in the eleventh century, Assyrians – alongside other Christians and Jews – became dhimmis, oppressed subjects of an Islamic state who had to buy their lives with high jizya taxes ( Jizya = Extortion fee .)

As Eli Kavon, a rabbi, writer, and teacher, notes:
Under dhimmi status, Jews and Christians could not carry weapons, could not make converts, were not allowed to live in houses higher than those of Muslims, could not make a public display of their rituals, could only ride donkeys and not horses, could not build new churches or synagogues and had to pay a yearly poll tax. In addition, they had to wear distinctive clothing to differentiate them from Muslims.

Despite the systematic oppression, Assyrians and other Christians in the Ottoman Empire for centuries maintained a strong demographic presence in the region – particularly with their churches.

The persecution against Christians culminated during the 1913-23 genocide , during which all Christians of Ottoman Turkey – Assyrians, Armenians, and Greeks – were targeted. Assyrians call the genocide “seyfo,” which means “sword” in their native language, as most victims were massacred with swords.

Professor Joseph Yacoub documents the genocide in his 2016 groundbreaking book Year of the Sword: The Assyrian Christian Genocide, A History:
The Armenian genocide of 1915 has been well documented. Much less known is the Turkish genocide of the Assyrian, Chaldean and Syriac peoples, which occurred simultaneously in their ancient homelands in and around ancient Mesopotamia – now Turkey, Iran and Iraq. The advent of the First World War gave the Young Turks and the Ottoman government the opportunity to exterminate the Assyrians in a series of massacres and atrocities inflicted on a people whose culture dates back millennia and whose language, Aramaic, was spoken by Jesus. Systematic killings, looting, rape, kidnapping and deportations destroyed countless communities and created a vast refugee diaspora. As many as 300,000 Assyro-Chaldean- Syriac people were murdered and a larger number forced into exile. The ‘Year of the Sword’ (Seyfo) in 1915 was preceded over millennia by other attacks on the Assyrians and has been mirrored by recent events, not least the abuses committed by Islamic State.

Joseph Yacoub, whose family was murdered and dispersed, has gathered together a compelling range of eye-witness accounts and reports which cast light on this ‘hidden genocide.’ Passionate and yet authoritative in its research, his book reveals a little-known human and cultural tragedy. A century after the Assyrian genocide, the fate of this Christian minority hangs in the balance.

Rev Joseph Shahbazian gets 10 years in prison, plus other penalties, including a ban on travelling abroad. Two converts get six years, while four other Christians can pay a fine to avoid jailtime. During the trial, the presiding judge, Iman Afshari, subjected the defendants to pressures, threats and humiliation.

An Iranian court has sentenced an Iranian-Armenian Christian clergyman to 10 years in prison. Along with him, two women coverts from Islam were also given a six-year sentence for their role in house churches.

The court decision against Joseph Shahbazian and the two converts came yesterday, this according to Article18, an advocacy group that documents religious oppression in Iran.

Four other Christians – Salar Eshraghi Moghadam, Farhad Khazaee, Somayeh (Sonya) Sadegh and her mother Masoumeh Ghasemi – were also given sentences ranging from one to four years but were also offered the option of paying fines ranging from US$ 800 to US$ 1,250 each in order to stay out of prison.

In total, the seven Christians were sentenced to 32 years in prison. However, the fate of Rev Joseph Shahbazian, 58, and the two converts – Mina Khajavi, 59 and Malihe Nazari, 48, is different. All three will have to go to prison following the sentence imposed on 29 May by Judge Iman Afshari, head of the 26th Branch of the Tehran Revolutionary Court.

The harshest sentence was imposed on Rev Shahbazian. In addition to his 10-year prison sentence, the Iranian-Armenian clergyman will serve two years of internal exile in a remote province in south-eastern Iran.

After his release, he faces a two-year ban on travelling abroad or membership in any political or social organisation, and must report to Iran’s intelligence service for two years on an unspecified “seasonal basis”.

In reading the verdict, Judge Afshari, who is building a reputation for convicting Christians, stressed that the clergyman “established a group to attract Muslims” and “under the cover of religious programmes for prayer has propagated Evangelical Christianity”.

The judge accused the Christian pastor of engaging in “illegal activities and unfounded claims” and so “abused people's inner weaknesses and attracted some of them” to “his group".

Local sources report that, during a trial that lasted no more than four hours, Judge Afshari tried to put pressure on the two women defendants with the promise of a lighter sentence if they blamed Rev Joseph of cajoling them into converting.

Faced with their refusal, he threatened to increase their sentences. Using "harsh and sarcastic language”, he tried to "humiliate them and denigrate their beliefs”. When the defendants' lawyer objected, he replied that he was "only joking."

The crackdown against this group of Christians is but the latest in a long series. Last month, another court imposed a 10-year sentence on another Iranian-Armenian, Anooshavan Avedian, for “propaganda contrary to and offensive to the holy religion of Islam”.

Experts and activists are increasingly worried about the escalating violations of religious freedom , which are also affecting Baha'is, Sufis, Sunnis and atheists.

Local sources report blatant violations of the right to defence, with insults against people and their religion during trials, as well as "confessions" extorted by force or deception during imprisonment.

In recent years, Iranian authorities have arrested thousands of Christians who worship in house churches with hundreds convicted on charges of “action against national security”.

All this refutes claims by the Iranian government and its diplomats that Christians enjoy religious freedom and the right to worship in their churches and dedicate themselves to their own activities.

East Burdwan: Man chops off wife’s right hand to block government job

Renu Khatun, 23, was in her sleep and Sariful Sheikh alias Sher Mohammed, along with his two friends, used a machete to cut her wrist.

A 26-year-old man from Ketugram in East Burdwan allegedly chopped off the right hand of his wife, from wrist upwards, in an apparent attempt to prevent her from taking up the job of a nurse at a government hospital.

The incident took place early on Sunday morning when Renu Khatun, 23, was in her sleep and Sariful Sheikh alias Sher Mohammed, along with his two friends, used a machete to chop off her hand.

Police sources said Renu, who was rushed to a private hospital in Durgapur after two government hospitals referred her to Calcutta, was stable, but critical.

The police have started a probe on the basis of a complaint from Azizul Haque, father of the girl.

“We have received a complaint from the father of the woman and started a case of attempt to murder... All the accused, including the husband of the woman and his friends, are absconding. Raids are on to arrest them,” said Dhruba Das, an additional superintendent of police in East Burdwan’s Katwa.

Renu, from Chinispur of Ketugram from her childhood, completed her diploma course in General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Calcutta in 2018. After that, she began working in a private hospital in Durgapur as a nurse to gather experience amid objections from her husband and in-laws.

The police have learnt that her husband, who used to run a small grocery store of his father, and the in-laws were opposed to Renu’s decision of working and she was subjected to torture.

“She got married in 2017 and life has been difficult for her at her in-laws’ place from the very beginning.... The torture increased manifold when Renu informed her husband recently that she has got a government job as a nurse and she can be posted in anywhere across the state as per the job condition,” said Ripon Sheikh, elder brother of Renu.

“They had clearly said that she would not be allowed to work but my sister was adamant on joining the service...,” added Ripon, a diploma engineer, who failed to appear for an Indian Postal Department exam on Sunday because of the tragedy in the family.

Ripon and his family have informed the police that Renu, who was also pursuing her graduation in Sanskrit from a college in Ketugram, told them at the hospital that while she was writhing in pain, her husband told her that he took the step to ensure that she could never take up the government job.

The police have also learnt that her husband had hidden the severed portion of the hand in a bag to rule out the possibility of the wrist getting fixed with the arm through an operation.

“My sister’s right hand could have been saved had we found the severed portion on time... We searched the home, but didn’t get it. Later, some neighbours found it hidden in a bag, but it was too late,” said Ripon.

Why so much sexual assault and rape, and in this case sexual harassment, from Muslim?

In France, a Muslim quoted Qur’an while raping his victim.
A survivor of a Muslim rape gang in the UK has said that her rapists would quote the Qur’an to her, and believed their actions justified by Islam.
Thus it came as no surprise when Muslim migrants in France raped a girl and videoed the rape while praising Allah and invoking the Qur’an.
In India, a Muslim gave a Qur’an and a prayer rug to the woman he was holding captive and repeatedly raping.
And the victim of an Islamic State jihadi rapist recalled: “He told me that according to Islam he is allowed to rape an unbeliever. He said that by raping me, he is drawing closer to God…He said that raping me is his prayer to God.”
In India, a Muslim kidnapped and raped a 14-year-old Hindu girl, and forced her to read the Qur’an and Islamic prayers.
In Pakistan, another Christian woman recounted that her rapist was also religious: “He threw me on the bed and started to rape me. He demanded I marry him and convert to Islam. I refused. I am not willing to deny Jesus and he said that if I would not agree he would kill me.”
Rapists demanded that another girl’s family turn her over to them, claiming that she had recited the Islamic profession of faith during the rape and thus could not live among infidels.

A day that was supposed to be dedicated to pure fun turned into a nightmare for six girls who were returning by train from Gardaland. The young women, four resident in Milan and two in Pavia, are all aged between 16 and 17 and were on board the 2640 regional train which from Peschiera del Garda, in the province of Verona, was to take them to Milan after spending a day in the amusement park. As reported by IlGiorno.it, the girls were allegedly sexually harassed for a long time and heavily by a herd of around 100 North Africans.

“White women don’t get on here”
The victims reported: “We were surrounded. The heat was oppressive, some of us fainted. While we were looking for the driver, the sexual harassment took place."

They later recalled that their attackers had laughingly said to them, “White women don’t get on here.”

The incident occurred late in the afternoon last Thursday, June 2. The teenagers said they were at the Peschiera train station shortly before 6pm, where the platform and tracks were “populated by more than a hundred boys and even some girls, mostly of North African origin, our age or a little older. They screamed and ran. They even spat on the windows of a train that arrived before ours.”

According to the mayor of Castelnuovo del Garda, Giovanni Dal Cero, probably those young people were part of the crowd that during the day had poured onto the beach of Peschiera and had participated in a large brawl on Lake Garda that had been organized on social networks, during the which had occurred some stabbing and some vandalism.

A video posted on TikTok advertised a kind of rally for June 2nd. The train to Milan was packed with passengers. It seems that the victims of sexual harassment did not alert the police for fear of being beaten, but they decided to call their parents who arranged to call 112, “but no one intervened,” the mothers and fathers reported. A boy who helped them get off at the next stop, the Desenzano stop, came to the rescue of the victims.

Muslim guardian of public morals threatened women in Vienna, Austria: they should wear headscarves

At the Vienna Praterstern railway station on Thursday evening, a Muslim (19) threatened and insulted three girls aged 15 to 18.

They were told to dress more modestly and put on a headscarf. The “guardian of public morals” chased the three young women from the underground station Praterstern to Schwedenplatz. There he pulled out a knife, kicked them and put one of the victims (17) in a headlock. The women then called the police.

The man was extremely aggressive towards the police officers. A small amount of cannabis was seized from the suspect during the arrest. The Muslim, who was known to the police, was arrested and charged with suspicion of dangerous threat, attempted bodily harm and violation of the Narcotic Substances Act. The victims suffered no physical injuries as a result of the incident.

RAMGARH: A 19-year-old woman, married for barely six months in Jharkhand’s Chatra district, was brutally tortured for dowry by her inlaws and later killed by inserting a hot iron rod into her private parts, police and family members said on Thursday.

Ansari got married to Qurban Ansari of Ara village on November 21 last year. Her trouble started soon as her in-laws demanded Rs 1 lakh cash, a motorcycle, washing machine and air coolers, demands that the girl’s poor parents were unable to meet.

According to the police, on Tuesday night, Rubina was subjected to brutal torture by her husband Ansari, father-in-law Mohammad Suleiman; Ansari’s cousin, Mohammad Nizam; and aunt, Hamza Khaloon.

After assaulting Rubina, a hot iron rod was inserted in her private parts to kill her, police and witnesses, who saw the body, said. Ramgarh subdivisional police officer Kishore Kumar Raman said Ansari and his relatives tried to hush up the death by claiming that Rubina killed herself.

“It was when the deceased was being bathed as a part of Islamic rituals before lowering the body into the grave on Wednesday that her relatives spotted injury marks and raised an alarm,” Rajak said.

“Women police officers were sent. They noticed injuries, burn marks and massive wounds around her private parts. Then the body was taken into police custody and sent for autopsy,” Rajak told TOI.
