CAPACITY BUILDING: CAS CHARGES PERSONNEL TO BRING THEIR ACQUIRED SKILLS TO BEAR IN ENHANCING NAF OPERATIONS AS AFIT GRADUATES ANOTHER BATCH OF CIS TECHNICIANS The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, has charged newly graduated personnel of Intermediate and Advanced Communication and Information Systems (CIS) Courses at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Kaduna to bring the skills acquired during their training to bear in enhancing the conduct of the NAF’s operations. The CAS stated this yesterday, 7 July 2020, while speaking during the Graduation Ceremony of 82 personnel who recently completed Intermediate and Advanced CIS Courses at AFIT. The Intermediate Courses, which began 6 months ago, comprised the Airmen Electrical Electronics/Communication Course, Airmen Information Technology Course and Airmen Electrical Electronics/Radar Course, while the Advanced Courses, of 3 months duration, comprised Advanced Airmen Electrical Electronics/Communication Course, Advanced Airmen Information Technology Course and Advanced Airmen Electrical Electronics/Radar Course. Speaking further, the CAS noted that effective military communication was a key requirement for any successful military enterprise, including the projection of Air Power. He observed that having such effective communication required personnel with the appropriate skillsets. He stated that the current NAF leadership had, from inception, accordingly placed emphasis on the development of human capacity in all areas that would ensure the effective and efficient employment of air power, when required. In this regard, the CAS said, the NAF had consistently trained personnel both locally and abroad, noting that the successful execution of air operations in theatres across the Country was a testament to the efficacy of the NAF’s current capacity building initiatives. “In recent times, the NAF’s effort in enhancing capacity of CIS personnel has led to the training of 4 Information Technology officers on Advanced Software Development at the Academy Computer Training Centre, Miami Florida, United States of America (USA) and 5 others on Advanced Cyber Security at the Institute of Information Security, Maharashtra Pune, India”, Air Marshal Abubakar said. He further disclosed that the NAF had trained 4 Communications personnel on Forward Looking Infra-Red (FLIR) Camera Intermediate Maintenance Course in the USA, while Chinese Electronics Import and Export Corporation had trained 3 officers and one Senior Non Commissioned Officer in China on Radar systems. The CAS also revealed that 5 CIS officers were undergoing various courses in China, in addition to a total of 20 others who were trained in-country by the FLIR Company US on Airborne Tactical Observation Systems and were currently deployed to various theatres of operation across the Country. He remarked that the knowledge acquired in the various courses of training would boost capacity of NAF CIS personnel so that such courses could eventually be conducted at AFIT, thereby saving scarce national resources. The CAS further observed that the technical courses being conducted at AFIT were already proving crucial towards reducing the dependence on foreign expatriates, while also building the confidence of NAF personnel. He promised that training facilities at the Institute would be upgraded to further improve the practical experience of future students. While congratulating the graduands for their determination and tenacity to work through to the end of the Course, Air Marshal Abubakar reminded them that they would be deployed to support ongoing NAF operations either directly or indirectly. He therefore charged them to remain highly professional, focused and disciplined. “You must bring to bear the skills you have acquired during your training here at this prestigious Institute in the discharge of your duties. It is therefore my sincere expectation that as you go to the field, you will be good and worthy ambassadors of AFIT,” the CAS said. He also reminded all personnel to support the Government’s efforts in the fight against COVID-19 by ensuring total adherence to stipulated guidelines; including the wearing of face masks, observance of social/physical distancing when in public places as well as the avoidance of unnecessary inter-state movements. Earlier in his welcome address, the Commandant AFIT, Air Vice Marshal Abdulganiyu Olabisi, stated that the objective of the courses was to improve on the skills acquired by the airmen and airwomen from their basic courses. According to him, following the basic training, they had been posted to various units for hands-on experience. The intermediate and advanced courses, he said, provide the airmen/airwomen with the skill and knowledge that would enable them carry out more specialized functions as they handle higher responsibilities. He noted that the resources were optimized to ensure satisfactory coverage of the theoretical and practical aspects of the courses. In spite of the challenges faced in the course of the training, the Commandant remarked that AFIT is totally committed to the task of human capacity development through robust and result oriented training for enhanced professional performance. He thanked the NAF leadership, as well as Headquarters Air Training Command and the 441 Communications Group, for the immense support and timely response to their requests. Highlights of the Graduation Ceremony include the conferment of certificates on the graduands as well as the presentation of awards to the best graduating students in each of the Courses. NAF LAUNCHES RENEWED OFFENSIVE AGAINST ARMED BANDITS IN SOKOTO AS CAS ASSURES OF SUSTAINED EFFORTS TO RESTORE PEACE TO TROUBLED AREAS IN THE NORTH WEST The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), through the Air Component of Operation HADARIN DAJI, has destroyed some armed bandits’ camps and neutralized several bandits in a fresh air interdiction operation launched yesterday, 6 July 2020, in Sokoto State, North West Nigeria. The subsidiary Air Interdiction Operation is being conducted as part of efforts to rid the North West of armed bandits, cattle rustlers, kidnappers and other criminal elements under the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) led Operation ACCORD. Speaking today, 7 July 2020, on the progress so far made, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, who has been in Sokoto to oversee the planning and launch of the Operation, expressed satisfaction with what has been achieved in the day and night missions executed to smoke out the bandits from their camps within the Kagara Forest area of Sokoto State. He noted that, while sustaining the air offensive, the Air Component was working closely with ground troops to ensure that the armed bandits that escape the aerial bombardments are mopped up on the ground. Similarly, he disclosed that, because the Kagara Forest extends to Niger Republic, there was also ongoing liaison with the Nigerien Authorities to ensure that the bandits do not escape through the international borders. While assuring the people of Sokoto State, and indeed all Nigerians, of the NAF’s unalloyed commitment towards ensuring a secured and stable environment, the CAS emphasized that every Nigerian has a role to play, noting that all hands need to be on deck to ensure the peace and prosperity of the Nation. He further stated that security was not just about bombs and bullets but also about development. According to him, “security and development are two sides of the same coin and I am very happy with what the State Government is doing in order to enhance development of communities so that people can see that they have a stake in the system. With what we are doing and what State Governments are doing, the problem of armed banditry will soon fizzle out”. Speaking further, Air Marshal Abubakar noted that the massive deployment of air assets to Sokoto State was to add impetus to operations in the State and its environs with a view to bringing the spate of criminal activities to a decisive end. “With the number of platforms deployed for operations in Sokoto as well as the ones operating in Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna and Niger States, you can be assured that all available resources have been mobilized to ensure that our society is secured and our people can go about their businesses without fear”, the CAS said. The CAS expressed appreciation to the Government and people of Sokoto State for their support and resilience, while urging the Air Component to sustain the momentum of its operations to bring about the total defeat of the criminal elements, working in synergy with sister Services and other security agencies. Air Marshal Abubakar also thanked the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, for his unflinching support to the NAF. He equally expressed gratitude to the National Assembly, especially the Senate and House Committees on Defence and Air Force, for their support and understanding towards the needs of the Service. The CAS, who had earlier received series of briefings on the conduct of the Operation from the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) Tactical Air Command, Air Vice Marshal Olusegun Philip, and the Operation HADARIN DAJI Sokoto Sector Air Component Commander, was accompanied on the visit by Branch Chiefs and Directors from Headquarters NAF as well as the AOC Special Operations Command. BH’s Shekau faction has released its first clip of a spokesman claiming to be speaking from Niger State. He greeted Shekau and their “brothers” in Sambisa, Lake Chad & Zamfara. This may be mere bluff but if it’s true, it’s another evidence of BH’s presence in the north-central. Niger has dense mountainous forestry that links all the way to Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara & Sokoto. This vegetation will a perfect safe haven for BH. It’s thicker than Sambisa forest where BH has eluded security forces for ten years. And Abuja will be within a striking distance. It’s high time the operations in the northwest and north-central have changed to an anti-insurgency one. Our intelligence agencies need to invest more resources into these dynamics to investigate this claim and understand the extent of the threat and their coordination strategy.

Honestly the service chiefs especially COAS should meet and do a presentation showing images from videos/pictures of immediate effect of I.E.D on light skinned hilux vehicle to the house committee on defense/security probably this would force the Federal government to do some serious procurements. Even with the MRAP you would still have chances of casualties both KIA and WIA both the figures would drop.
