higherpower:
The biggest economies in Africa
Africa growth

South Africa’s struggle to keep its spot as the second largest economy on the African continent (after Nigeria) has seemingly abated – but there’s a more worrying trend that shows up in the data when measuring GDP per capita.

With and estimated gross domestic product (GDP) of $350 billion in 2017, South Africa sits comfortably as Africa’s second largest economy – a position it lost briefly to Egypt in 2016, when the North African nation shot past our struggling economy with GDP output of $332 billion, versus our $295 billion.

According to the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) latest World Economic Outlook report, however, Egypt’s estimated total for 2017 is at $237 billion, putting the risk of it taking second place to rest, at least for now.
This whole list is just pure trash ,its full of crap statistics.

Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy by some margin – with a growth projection so large that it is unlikely that South Africa will surpass it. But Nigeria’s advantage – its almost 200 million-odd population, which lends itself to such high GDP figures – is also its downfall.

The table below outlines the 10 biggest economies in Africa by GDP.

# Country GDP (2017, IMF)
1 Nigeria $376.3 billion
2 South Africa $349.3 billion
3 Egypt $237.1 billion
4 Algeria $178.3 billion
5 Angola $124.2 billion
6 Morocco $109.8 billion
7 Ethiopia $80.9 billion
8 Kenya $79.5 billion
9 Sudan $58.2 billion
10 Tanzania $51.7 billion

Measuring wealth by GDP per capita has always been more indicative of a country’s overall economic health.

In this measure, Nigeria slips significantly to 15th position on the list, just ahead of Egypt. Here, other African nations shine through – such as the business-friendly Mauritius, and the oil-rich Gabon, which produce billions of dollar’s worth of value, while holding relatively small population.

While South Africa has never been the biggest, it has always occupied a special place in being a high-GDP, high population country. However, this picture is slowly changing.

According to figures researched and released by the IMF, Botswana overtook South Africa in 2011, as the latter’s economic slowdown took full effect, hitting a full dip in 2016. Data for 2017 showed a swing upwards – with the IMF predicting slow growth through to 2020.

While all of the top 5 experienced similar, if mixed, trends in GDP per capita growth, the recoveries have been far stronger, with Botswana now extending its lead over South Africa, and Namibia on a trajectory to eventually surpass it.

Mauritius and Gabon are expected to continue onwards and upwards.

# Country GDP per capita (2017, IMF)
1 Mauritius $9 794
2 Gabon $7 971
3 Botswana $7 877
4 South Africa $6 179
5 Namibia $5 413
6 Libya $4 858
7 Angola $4 407
8 Algeria $4 292
9 Swaziland $3 914
10 Tunisia $3 496
Data presented by Human Progress – which depicts Gross National Income per capita – shows a similar picture, with Mauritius and Gabon far ahead with Namibia coming up at the bottom of the top.

Where the data differs, however, is in how close the race actually is between South Africa and Botswana on this measure.

According to Human Progress, Botswana’s challenge to South Africa has only occurred in the past four years, with the two countries alternating places since 2014. As it currently stands (as at 2016), Botswana has only just passed over South Africa, the data shows.

Human Progress’ graphs covers data up to 2016, while the IMF makes projections beyond current available data.

The Plan for our manufacturing sector under the MTP by The National Treasury(Medium Term Plan for duration 2018-2022)

We have made huge strides in The Ease Of Doing Business and in the Global Competitiveness Index rankings.

We are left with the remaining three. That's where the work is.With passion and the Legacy in mind,I can't see why the president will shoot himself in the foot and choose not to realise this. Matiang'i is hardheaded(in a good way),he will expect nothing but performance from the guys reporting to him. There might be some reprieve for our manufacturing capacity as a nation after all,I'm pumped up by the new development in our steel industry.Outside SA courtesy of Devki Group,we will have the only raw industrial steel plant which will be self powered by a 55.5 MW energy plant. Our steel import bill stands at around 0.8-1 billion USD. Devki wants to eat into this as they will be producing the steel from the scratch from our locally iron ore reserves. We have BMS,a Bangladeshi company which also wants to come in,it will partner with a Mauritian company and unnamed Kenyan Investor .The new Jumbo Steel Mills in Rabai,Kilifi has recently been opened.

You cannot industrilise without metals. We will soon have steel in cheap prices if everything falls into place.

A berth for the Dongo Kundu SEZ is already underway, the SEZ is modeled under Dubai's port of Jebel Ali,the world ninth busiest Port.Kengen are a brilliant Parastatal, the Naivasha Park is coming up.3.4 billion shillings for land has already been set aside. The SEZ in Athi River is set to receive cash in the budget year 2019-2020,we can at least be optimistic in our manufacturing! What we need is implementation of all mentioned in the Treasury's MTP 2018-2022.

Nonsense ,this Lagos is the same city, together with Abuja ,which gets ranked amongst the least livable in the whole world year in and year out.

Abuja was ranked 137th least livable city.
Lagos was ranked 138th least livalbe city.

Both were ranked by two reputable international firms Mercer Inc from New York and the EIU of London.

Kenya has also caught up and slightly surpassed Venezuela in GDP ,shameful for a country with the largest oil reserves anywhere.

Angolan Kwanza currency lost 50% of its value in the last one year alone...from 207 Kwanza to $1 US in Feb 2018 to 311 Kwanza per dollar in Jan 2019. Seems like oil ain't such a big blessing.

Stop tellin blatant lies ,no govt anywhere in the world is capable of borrowing 45% of its budget. The IMF and World Bank will give warnings whenever a country breaches just 8% budget deficit for 2-3 years and interest rates will shoot up unsustainably.Look at what happened to Greece when they got huge bailout packages they had to cut cut cut spending and raise taxes like crazy .

Nigerian guys rock, they know how to treat foreign women well.
The xenophobic attacks against Nigerians by fellow blacks in South Africa is simply because of their women dying for Nigerian men, so instead of fighting the white men who put them through apartheid they transfer aggression to Nigerians.
And also, Nigerian men are more endowed down there than Kenyan men and whenever the 'handuru' Kenyan ladies they keep asking for more grin grin
If only Nigerian girls know how much foreign ladies value us they would show us more respect and come out openly to say 'Thank you sirs' and not to be pretending to 'Fell Pregnant' without acknowledging how sweet our 'love machines' are grin grin
You're exhibiting risky levels of narcissism ,self delusions and sadistic traits. If you're so good how come these "qualities" haven't translated into success of keeping Nigerian lights on 24/7 ,clean and organized cities or lasting peace and harmony between Nigerian ethnicities? This is quite sad, and the Nigerian diplomats should have this discussion with the Kenyan government.
Police harassment to legal immigrants mostly from West Africa is quite rampant.

There are definitely few criminal ones(like some Nigerians recently found car jacking in Roysambu ), but a student who is in Kenya for studies should not go through this torture by the police. Someone must be held accountable.
A student at USIU is definitely one whose parents has really invested in his studies, and mostly financially stable to be doing monkey business in Kenya.
Police harassment of Nigerians should end!
Where is the Nigerian government when her citizens are buttered and killed? So sad.
Quite sad indeed, nobody and i mean NOBODY whether legal or illegal should lose their life because they're in police custody.Taking of one's life should be left to God or to competent legal authorities after very very careful examination of evidence.Policemen should never be a law unto themselves and criminal activity should only be pursued when there PROBABLE suspicion and clear evidence- all those involved should be held accountable .Police should be professional at ALL TIMES not using certain people's presence as a pretext to extort money.Definitely criminal Nigerians should be deported but killing somebody for it whether Nigerian,Somali or whatever is a BIG NO NO for me .

It's unfortunate out government isn't doing anything. Yes we have some bad eggs among us but it doesn't justify the huge maltreatment we get in some of these African countries. I've been to all countries in east Africa non can I say is better than us even when u put them together! We have what it takes to be looked up to as a role model and not be seen as criminals. Not with Uganda looking like ariaria market in Aba I honestly blame our government!
Tis such arrogance and belittling of other Africa countries that contributes to your being unwanted.Yours is a case of sour grapes and facts largely go against you-you won't east Africans trooping into Nigeria like it is the other way round, you compare a whole country Uganda to a market in Naija ...so how is Naija any better? You're schooling and living in east Africa so if your'e so much better why don't leave? Last time i checked reputable ratings institutions they had a lot of metrics in which Naija fares badly than east africa ...quality of life ,provision of basic amenities, innovation scores ,literacy rates ,healthcare and life expectancy ,safety and security ,economic diversity and better governance scores amongst many other metrics. You're just a bitter Naija coz you want special treatment...it is earned NOT DEMANDED.
