The Lagos State Special Court has sentenced a trailer driver to three months imprisonment for driving against the flow of traffic. The PUNCH had reported the arrest of the 33-year-old driver, Sagir Abubakar, on September 18, 2012. Abubakar, who is from Yobe State, was arrested by the state Taskforce on Environmental and Special (Enforcement) Unit while driving against the traffic on the Third Mainland Bridge. The Taskforce Chairman, Superintendent Bayo Sulaiman, had said, “Driving against the traffic is rampant in the Lagos metropolis. “This practice violates the provision of the state traffic law.” He said punishment for the offence was one-year imprisonment for a first-time offender and three years imprisonment for subsequent offences, including seizure of the vehicle. Abubakar was first arraigned on September 20 but his case was adjourned on his request. On Wednesday, Abubakar pleaded guilty and asked for leniency. His charge sheet read, “That you, Sagir Abubakar, on September 18, 2012, at about 12.40 pm on the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos State, drove a trailer with registration number XB 323 FKA driving same against oncoming traffic and committed an offence contrary to section 7(b), Lagos Road Traffic Law 2012 and punishable under section 7 (b)(1) of same law.” The Magistrate, Yetunde Pinhero, subsequently sentenced him to three months imprisonment with an option of N100, 000 fine. Abubakar was also sent to the state Drivers’ Institute for seven days driving training and re-certification. While the rail project is a good project, the fact that you bring out one new thread every time half a meter of track is laid is just hillarious. The Abuja city light rail project has passed 50% completion with no noise or fanfare. If the abuja guys were doing the same propaganda as you ACN guys, NL will be filled with such stories by now. Orile-mile 2 is just 4 minutes drive by road. How is that a great achievement by train? Let the project continue and when it is done and Lagosians can enjoy it, then you can come here and spam us with your posts. For now, keep the spam down and stop announcing to us every track that is being laid. Remember this is the standard you all always demand from the FG. chaircover: You are right, Ive been to a few weddings where the couple refused to say the for better for worse line but said for better for best. Even the Bible said that we will go through trials so I dont know where this better and best is coming from. I've been married for 2 years and I love my wife. Before I got married I had this habbit of watching porn. My wife doesn't want me to watch porn anymore and I have stopped it. @ all your reasoning is so wrong. Cigarette smoking is bad and has killed many people yet fashola has not banned it. Danfo has killed and maimed many yet its not banned. Okada is resultant effect of a systemic failure. If there was no market for it okada riders will go out of business why not snatch the market from them. MTN and co took the market from Nitel where's Nitel today. Let the govt provide alternatives. |
