in the 21st century. it is appalling that a mega city like Lagos still have rickety buses plying the roads and conveying the workforce both skilled and unskilled to work aside from the state of the buses the behavior of the paraga drinking drivers is nothing to write home about. anybody can be a passenger in the hands of this dangerous unskilled drivers.i believe Lagos state should not leave the movt of people in the state in the hands of these drivers with the rickety buses and like any modern city should invite investors into the sectors with trained drivers

SO WHO IS THE CANDIDATE?
Politics › ACN/CPC merger: Parties may ask Buhari/Tinubu to drop 2015 bid by bigass(op): 1:32am On Jan 26, 2013
Former head of state and Congress for Progressive Change presidential candidate in the 2011 election, Maj.-Gen. Mohammadu Buhari (retd.) may drop his presidential ambition in 2015, as part of ongoing merger negotiations between his party and the Action Congress of Nigeria.

Saturday PUNCH’s investigations showed that although the CPC and the ACN had not begun full discussions, there was an initial understanding that the leadership of both parties must be ready to make personal sacrifices for the success of the merger plan.

An influential member of one of the parties involved in the negotiations told Saturday PUNCH on Thursday that such a personal sacrifice might include asking Buhari and the ACN National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to drop their ambitions in 2015.

After the 2011 elections, Buhari had said that he would not run for the office of the President again, having failed to win the election three times.

But during the inauguration of the CPC merger committee in Abuja on January 16, the former head of state said that the ongoing merger talks by the major opposition political parties would determine if he would run for president in 2015.

Although Tinubu has not declared any presidential ambition for 2015, there have been reports that he may run on a joint ticket with Buhari.

It was gathered that the merger partners had started working on another plan, if Buhari and Tinubu were barred from contesting.

This is based on the fear that unless the duo forgo any 2015 ambition, the merger plan might fail.

They would be prevailed upon to step aside for a younger and progressive person, the source said.

It was learnt also that the parties were looking beyond their membership for such a candidate.

A chieftain of one of the parties, who pleaded anonymity, said, “Nothing is rigid for now. All parties in the merger plan are going into the talks as equals. Leaders of the parties are ready to make personal sacrifices.

“Buhari is not going into the talks with a mindset that he must contest the 2015 poll. If after the merger, the majority in the party says he will not contest, he will drop his ambition. Leadership of the parties, including Buhari, are ready to put aside their personal ambitions.

“We are looking at a situation where Buhari or Tinubu would not be able to contest. We do not have anybody in mind now, but our search is not restricted to our members.

“We are looking for a progressively-minded and mature person. This is not in terms of age. Such a person can be a technocrat, who is well- experienced in the politics of the country, not somebody, who will start learning on the job.”

Both parties have already disagreed on the exclusion of the All Nigeria Peoples Party from the merger.

It was gathered that while Buhari believed that the ANPP should be excluded from the merger, the ACN thought otherwise.

The CPC and its presidential candidate believe that there are some PDP moles in the ANPP, who might thwart the proposed merger.

The ACN thought that to give the mega party a national outlook, the ANPP should be included.

It was learnt that the ACN was making moves to bring the All Progressives Grand Alliance into the merger talks, to ensure that the mega party makes an inroad into the South-East.

When contacted, the CPC spokesman, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin, justified the exclusion of some politicians from the merger talks.

He said, “Undoubtedly, we are getting to the stage where the wheat shall be separated from the chaff. The real progressives shall flock together leaving those with a penchant for reactionary politics to intermingle with the PDP.

“The strength and determination of the merging parties cannot be vitiated by the deceptive politicking of the PDP.”

On the non-inclusion of Buhari’s running mate, Pastor Tunde Bakare, in the CPC merger committee, Fashakin said that there was no quarrel between the duo.

Fashakin said, “What we did was to say no member of our Board of Trustees will be in the merger committee.

“In fact, both leaders agreed to this. If you look at the 18-member committee, there is no member of our BoT among them.

“Anyone insinuating that there is a quarrel between them is halucinating.”

His ACN counterpart, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said, “The merger partners are determined to make the alliance work in order to salvage Nigeria from the misrule of the PDP.”

Bakare, had in an interview with Saturday PUNCH last week, said, “But I realised recently when the ACN said the PDP is a party of rogues and thieves and criminals, the PDP replied that there are more criminals in the ACN than the PDP and there was no response thereafter. I read all that in the newspapers. If there is going to be a merger, between who and who-between rogues and criminals? Can light and darkness co-exist?”

Politics › Buhari Can’t Win 2015 Elections —presidency •he’s A Major Threat To PDP —CPC by bigass(op): 7:11am On Jan 20, 2013
The presidency on Friday said a former Head of State and three-time presidential candidate, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), stood no chance of winning the 2015 general election.

Buhari, during the inauguration of the Congress for Progressive Change Merger Committee in Abuja on Wednesday, had said the ongoing merger talks by the major opposition political parties would determine if he would run for the presidency in 2015.

The Katsina State-born general, who had earlier said he would not run for presidency in 2015, having failed to win the election three times, said the merger might make him change his mind.

However Senior Special Assistant for Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr. Doyin Okupe, told one of our correspondents on Friday that even if Buhari contested, he would not win the election.

Okupe said even though the President was not focused on the 2015 elections yet, Buhari’s ambition could not ruffle the feathers of the Peoples Democratic Party, which Jonathan belongs to.

He said, “It is a free country and anyone can contest any election. Also, anyone can change his or her mind. If Buhari said he would not contest before and has changed his mind, he is free to do that. But if someone said he would not contest and later said he would contest, it shows an inconsistent political disposition.

“Buhari left government a long time ago. His ideas and other parameters are archaic. I don’t think he stands a chance to win the election in 2015 if he decides to contest.”

According to him, the ongoing merger talks among the opposition parties were not capable of intimidating the ruling party.

He said, “Mergers are not a new thing. We have always had mergers in the political history of this country. But you need to look at the components of this current merger they are talking about. They are not a suitable alternative to the PDP. They have not shown themselves to be suitable alternatives.”

Okupe stated that the PDP was superior to all the parties in the merger talk.

“They don’t have superior programmes or ideologies. They are not more credible than the PDP. They are not better than the PDP. They don’t have a credible candidate that can beat PDP’s candidate. It is obvious that the alliance between the parties will not work.

“In fact, the merger is an acceptance of inferiority complex on the part of the parties involved in the merger. If you look at it critically, the merger is an apparent desire to win power at all costs. It is not a proper desire.

“The merger shows that the political parties involved in it lack political support and goodwill. It does not mean the PDP will rest on its oars, we will keep working hard.”

Responding, the National Publicity Secretary, CPC, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin, said Buhari was a threat to the PDP.

According to Fashakin, the determination of the opposition parties to bring the merger into reality was a threat to the dominance of the PDP.

He said, “For us in the CPC, we are aware that the persons in charge of the presidency’s propaganda got their jobs for the mendacious and utterly atrocious missive against the person of Buhari. Truly, Buhari’s presence has been the major threat to the misrule of PDP in the last 13 years. Successive PDP regimes have unleashed humongous deprivations on the people.”

The CPC spokesman stated that Buhari’s performance as military head of state was better when compared with Jonathan’s.

“The 20-month era of strong leadership espoused what later became known as ‘Buharinomics,’ which simply put, was an admixture of frugality, probity, respect for contractual agreements, expunction of all covert or overt attempts at subjugating the Nigerian economy to world powers and above all, an economic policy with Nigeria as the centrepiece

“Gratefully, the cluelessness of this present regime and its high propensity for opacity are already lifting the veil off the people. The determination of the opposition parties to bring the merger into reality shall ensure the defeat of the PDP in the next general elections.”

When SUNDAY PUNCH contacted the spokesman for the ACN, Mr. Lai Mohammed, for his comments, he said he would get back to our correspondent, but had yet to do so when this report was filed.

Earlier, a member of the PDP Board of Trustees, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, had said the merger plan by opposition parties would not stop the PDP from emerging victorious in 2015 elections.

Iwuanyanwu described the move as one that would neither pull PDP down nor succeed.

“As a democrat, I should sound a note of warning, I have read recently about the coming together of some political parties. They are not coming together on the basis of ideology. They are coming together because they are afraid that unless they gang up, PDP will win the elections in 2015. This is a wrong political calculation.

“I am in PDP, but I believe that democracy is best practised when there is a very strong opposition. Democracy without a strong opposition is worthless. They are making a mistake. They should tell Nigerians what they can do to change situations, not how to pull PDP down. This is wrong politics.”

The parties involved in the merger have however accused the PDP of frustrating their plan.

Mohammed had said the merger plans had driven the PDP-led Federal Government to resort to tactics aimed at tarnishing the image of key opposition leaders.

“These opposition leaders are considered as constituting a clear and present danger to the electoral fortunes of the PDP in 2015, hence must be stopped at all costs and by whatever means,” he said.

all we want is better light. how they will come about this is not our headache.it is theirs. why did we vote them in?
why do we spend so much money on feeding clothing and shelter for all those in govt if they can not think for us
let them think for us my friend!

bodejohn: We need to keep educating ourselves, power generation is only a lap in the marathon race of providing uninterrupted power supply to Nigerians. That an athlete is leading the first lap does not mean he is the winner.

I have said this before and I say it again, generation is not the only problem, there is also transmission and distribution. If he fed. govt. like they can generate 10000Mw, if the distribution and transmission systems are weak, we will not see any result. It's just like a range sport suv without tyres.

I think the govt should leave the propaganda off we can generate so much power and concentrate on building better transmission and distribution systems.

Mark my words, the merger will come to nothing because there would be eventual disagreement as to who the flagbearers, BOT members and National excos will be. Of course the PDP won't also sit back and watch the demise of their party by the planned merger.
Reminds me of spy movies and international espionage.
