Politics / Akeredolu Purchases N1.2 Billion Cars For Ondo Lawmakers, PDP Blasts Him by bigboluet(m): 9:45am On Sep 07, 2020
The Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has come under criticism from the opposition over the distribution of 2020 model SUV KIA Sportage to members of the state House of Assembly as official vehicles.

The governor had earmarked about N1.18billion in the 2020 budget for the procurement of vehicles for the House of Assembly.

The cars were presented to the leadership of the house on Friday, a day to the official flag off of the governorship campaign of the All Progressives Congress, with the opposition alleging that the expenditure was meant to score a political point.

Seven members of the house who frustrated the impeachment move against the deputy governor, Agboola Ajayi, missed out of the car distribution.

Presenting the vehicles to the state legislators at the Government House in Akure, Mr Akeredolu said his administration had kept its promise of providing the cars despite the dwindling resources of the state.

“What matters to me is that when we make promises we keep them. It is not for political reasons. We have been on this car issue for a while and luckily, it came today just before the flag off. Nobody is doing it for political reason. This is an improvement on what we had last,” the governor explained.

Responding on behalf of his colleagues, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Bamidele Oloyelogun, thanked the governor for being a faithful servant leader.

He recalled that it was the second time Governor Akeredolu would present members of the Ondo State House of Assembly with official vehicles in three and a half years.

The first time was in December 2018, when he presented official vehicles to members of the 8th assembly who were elected during the administration of former Governor Olusegun Mimiko.

But the Peoples Democratic Party described the car gifts as a waste of resources.

The party’s spokesperson, Kennedy Peretei, in a statement said the governor was desperate to placate the state lawmakers.

The PDP alleged that the government procured over 50 cars for distribution ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.

“At the ceremony where legislators received these Greek gifts, Akeredolu remarked that the timing for giving them these cars has no political undertone. Why did he have to wait till now that election is around the corner to donate these cars?” the party queried.

“Last year, the Ondo State House of Assembly adjourned for more than five weeks because of a dangerous python that dropped from the ceiling of the Chambers of the Assembly during plenary session.

“The governor and the legislators traded accusations of neglect and welfare of members and the Assembly Complex that harboured reptiles. It is therefore suspicious for the governor to suddenly show care and attention for the legislators amongst whom he could not secure the constitutionally required number to impeach his estranged deputy, Mr Agboola Ajayi.

“The same is true for traditional rulers that Akeredolu had shown great disrespect since he was sworn in as Governor of Ondo State.

“The Akeredolu-led APC government has demonstrated insensitivity to the plight of the Ondo State people by this gesture.

“Just twenty four hours after President Muhammadu Buhari increased the pump price of petrol from N143 to N161 per litre and a 150% increase in Electricity consumption per Kwh, the best Akeredolu could do is to use tax payers’ money to induce the political class to curry their favour. The move is vexatious and amounts to adding salt on injury.”

Also, the deputy governor, Mr Ajayi, criticised the presentation of the vehicles to the exclusion of seven members.

He said the action of the governor was selective, as those excluded were among those who refused to sign the impeachment notice against him.

Four of the nine members were suspended by the leadership of the house, including the deputy speaker, Iroju Ogundeji, for what the house described as unparliamentary acts.

The suspended lawmakers recently secured a court order quashing their suspension by the house.

Mr Ajayi who spoke through his media aide, Allen Sowore, faulted the governor’s action.

“Presenting official vehicles to only members of the House who are loyal to the governor and leaving out those who refused to sign impeachment process of the deputy governor is the lowest political strategy,” he said.

One of the lawmakers left out of the car distribution, Tomide Akinribido, told PREMIUM TIMES that their exclusion was not a mistake but a deliberate act to penalise them for their refusal to sign the impeachment notice against the deputy governor.

He noted that two of the nine lawmakers were given the cars to give the impression that they were not being victimised.

“It is not the governor’s personal gifts, this is statutory and the governor should not play politics with it,” said Mr Akinribido.

When reached for his comments, the Commissioner for Information, Donald Ojogo, said the House of Assembly was in a better position to react to the issue.

PRESS STATEMENT

Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu while Commissioning the sole Project of Rotimi Akeredolu in Akure (Revenue House) said the PDP is dead. This claim is laughable because it can only come out from the mouth of a day dreamer.

The much hyped Flag off of the Akeredolu Campaign was apparently rejected not only by Ondo people but even the forces of nature that brought about torrential rainfall. Ironically, Tinubu and his hired crowd from Osun and Ekiti States symbolically took solace in umbrellas that dotted the entire Campaign ground.

Only last year, the PDP defeated the Buhari led APC roundly at the Presidential elections. The PDP also won two out of the three Senatorial Seats in Ondo State. How can such a party by any stretch of imagination be said to be dead?

It is shameful that the only project Tinubu came to Commission in three and half years is the Revenue House a building that stands as a sign post of multiple taxation of the Ondo State people 10% of which goes directly to the pocket of Akeredolu’s son.

The PDP is offering affordable education and health care delivery as against Aketi engineered astronomical tuition fees that have thrown many of the students in tertiary institutions out of school.

By October 10, Tinubu will know which Party is dead in Ondo State.

Health / Ondo Health Workers Lament Non-payment Of 15 Months Salaries by bigboluet(m): 1:12pm On Aug 28, 2020
Some health workers in Ondo State have accused the state government of denying them salaries in the past 15 months.

The 25 health workers, who took to social media to call out the government of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, said life has been miserable for them despite their active participation in fighting the new coronavirus in the state.

The health workers include doctors, nurses, scientific officers, pharmacists, medical lab technicians and record officers and currently work at government hospitals in Owo, Ore, Ikare Akoko, Irele and many other parts of the state.

This newspaper gathered that they were employed into the Ondo State civil service under the health management board on June 26, 2019 during the tenure of Oluwatoyin Akinkuotu as Head of Service (HoS).

PREMIUM TIMES also obtained copies of employment letters duly signed by Adeniran Ikuomola, the Permanent Secretary of the State Health Management Board.

Some of the affected individuals spoke with our correspondent under the condition of anonymity to avoid being sanctioned.

“We have been living on debt for the past one year. We were recruited and offered appointments letters but no payment. We kept working due to the promise that the government will attend to us”, one of the doctors said.

A pharmacist told PREMIUM TIMES that quitting the job at the period of COVID-19 may hinder the effort of the government towards curbing the deadly virus.

He, however, said that despite their travails, they keep up with the normal office activities.

“We have reached out to the state Assembly and some other stakeholders but effort to get our salaries proved abortive and we’re getting tired of this injustice”, another affected person said.

When contacted, the state Commissioner for Information, Donald Ojogo, told our correspondent that the current HoS, Oluwadare Aragbaiye, is in the best position to give reason for the neglect.

Mr Aragbaiye, is however, yet to respond to PREMIUM TIMES’ enquiries as of the time of filing this report. He did not respond to our correspondent’s calls and text messages.

Kekemeke, who spoke in a video obtained by SaharaReporters, said the party would also contract leaders of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in the state to rig the election in favour of the APC.

Isaacs Kekemeke, a former Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State, has said that the party will use armed thugs and militants to disrupt the October 10, 2020 governorship election in the state.

Kekemeke, who spoke in a video obtained by SaharaReporters, said the party would also contract leaders of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in the state to rig the election in favour of the APC.

He said the APC needed to win the governorship election at all cost, noting that the party was prepared to use 'federal might' to influence the election.

Kekemeke, who attacked the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Eyitayo Jegede, said the APC would not allow an opposition party to win the governorship election.

He said, "We will use NURTW members and thugs loyal to us (APC) to win this election at all cost.

"Eyitayo (PDP candidate) is only crying foul that they tore his posters in town. He has not seen anything yet.

"Governor Rotimi Akeredolu is the only one dealing with him now he has started crying, what if the Federal Government arrives the state for the election, he will run away."

Kekemeke also contested the APC governorship primary election in Ondo but lost out to Akeredolu, who is vying for a second term in office.

Politics / Ondo 2020: Akeredolu Not A Progressive Governor – Mimiko by bigboluet(m): 2:54pm On Aug 16, 2020
Former Ondo Governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko has described Oluwarotimi Akeredolu as not a progressive governor for abandoning reproductive health care programme in the state.

Mimiko however said he would soon reply attacks on him by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

Mimiko said he would speak out during campaigns and revealed why Akeredolu was able to do in one year what he could not do in eight years.

Akeredolu had launched attacks on Mimiko for abandoning projects started by late Olusegun Agagu.

Akeredolu also tagged the ZLP as a vehicle without engine.

But Mimiko, who spoke while receiving Deputy Governor, Hon Agboola Ajayi, at his Ondo town residence, said Akeredolu was not a progressive Governor because he abandoned reproductive health care programme in the state.

Mimiko hailed the courage of politicians that have remained with his vision.

He said the ZLP was made up of well studded politicians, adding that all structures within the party would be harmonised.

The former Ondo Governor said the ZLP was not expecting any surprises from Agboola and other defectors into the party.

He described Agboola as a well groomed and seasoned politician who have learnt a lot in politics.

His words: “We don’t expect any surprises. We know all the good and bad of Agboola. Never trust a man until you give him power.

“Agboola has seen and exercised power. He has a good head and good heart for governance. This is not the time for campaign but I will tell my friend (Akeredolu) why he was able to do what I could not do in eight years.

“Any party that does not drive in the direction of removing the burden of looking for money for reproductive health cannot be called a progressive.”

Agboola described Mimiko as ‘leader of politicians’ who was able to manage all of them for eight years.

He stressed the needs for unity into rescue the state from bad governance.

Agboola said he was in the ZLP to change the narrative of Ondo politics and governance for the good of the people.

“We are not just in the ZLP to contest. We want to win and take power for the benefit of all us. The whole state has spoken.

They are waiting for your (Mimiko) directive.”
