Actually, you are right. The Ballon D'or recently assumed more prominence from about 2010 till date when it was merged with the Fifa World best award. After the separation from Fifa Best award in 2016 thereabout, the Ballon D'or retained its prestige and gained precedence over the Fifa Best as the Ballon D'or winner is now seen as the World best player for that year.

Prior to 2010, FIFA world best was more recognized case in point with the below:

- Ronaldinho won FIFA world best in 2004 while Shevchenko won the corresponding Ballon D'or. Ronnie was officially regarded as the World best that year.
- Zidane won World best in 2003 while Nedved won the Ballon D'or. Of course, Zidane was seen as the rightful title holder of the planet's supreme player that year.
- Luis Figo won Fifa best in 2001 while Michael Owen won Ballon Dor same year. In truth, no one even regarded Michael Owen as the best player in the Premiership that year let alone across the globe

The reason for the above is that Ballon D'or then was synonymous with European footballer of the year award i.e best footballer playing in Europe. So its restrictive nature then contributed to its inferior standing to Fifa best. But since 2006, all winners of Fifa best have automatically won the Ballon D'or and with the official merger in 2010, the Ballon D'or had shed its regional perception and assumed a global dimension for its holder.
