Hello everyone!

I have no deficit on my i20. Do I still need to go to the Embassy with a bank statement? If yes, what should be the minimum amount on the bank statement?

Hello house,

The DS-160 location I filled late last year was for the Abuja location but I was able to secure a date in May at the Lagos Embassy. My question is do I need to update or fill a new DS-160 form. Also there's an update regarding my current job, should this be reflected too ?

Dear All,
I want to know what to fill as intending course of study, is it the course name on I-20 or the course name on admission letter. This is because the name of my major on I-20 is different from what it should be named.

Kindly assist for those who have experienced these, and which is adviceable to use for DS-160
I sent a mail to my school regarding this today and she explained that I should input the name of my course. According to her, the Embassy understands and she explained why it had to be a different major on the I20

Lex04:
Hi good people. A friend of mine would be going for his interview soon and has prepared this transcript. Kindly assist to review it and give your suggestions. Thanks.

Me: Good morning
VO: Good morning, pass me your I-20 please?
Me: (passes the I-20 to him)
VO: Where are you going?
Me: I’m going to Louisiana State University for a Master’s degree in Professional Counselling with a concentration in College Student Affairs
VO: How did you hear about LSU?
Me: After I decided to have my Master’s degree in the United States, I carried out an extensive research using google and some academic websites to check for schools that offer my course of interest and I found a few schools that I met their requirements among which was LSU
VO: How many schools did you apply to?
Me: I applied to 3 schools; Louisiana State University, Georgia Southern University and Western Illinois University
VO: How many of them offered you admission?
Me: The 3 of them offered me admission
VO: Why this school?
Me: I chose LSU firstly because of the school curriculum which requires me to attend professional conferences that would earn me extra professional certifications and would also help expand my network which the ither schools did not offer. Asides that, LSU offered me a graduate assistantship that covers more than 80% of my tuition fees and with a monthly stipend. Also, throughout my application process till now, their communication has always been fast and effective
VO: Why this course?
Me: This course would help achieve my career goal when I return to Nigeria, to take up a lecturing job at a higher institution preferably my alma mater and also work as a student affairs professional with educational bodies here in Nigeria
VO: Why USA?
Me: I believe US has the best education system in the world and is an excellent country to study for an education-related degree. Also, studying in the US will give me a world-class education experience in form of field work which is imperative to my career
VO: What is your study plan?
ME: Master’s degree in College Student Affairs is a 2-year program. I will be studying a total of 42 credit hours core curriculum. I am also required to maintain a GPA of 3.0 for the degree to be awarded. A few of my courses are Introduction to Counselling Practice, Advocacy and Leadership, Higher Education Administration amongst others
VO: What have you been doing since graduation?
Me: After my bachelor degree in 2018, I went for my National Youth Service between 2018 and 2019, after which, I secured a job with ABC Limited where I worked as a Sales Manager between 2019 and 2020. I then proceeded from there to my current organization where I work as a XYZ
VO: Who is sponsoring you?
Me: My cousin would be covering my deficit
VO: What does he do?
Me: He works as an IT Specialist
VO: Is he married? Does he have children?
Me: Yes, he’s married with two children, ages 3 and 5.
VO: Where does he live?
Me: He lives in Little Elm, Texas.
VO: Why is your cousin sponsoring you?
Me: He lived with me and my family and my parents sponsored him through his education and now that my dad is late and my cousin has the financial resources, he is willing to return the favour.

Kindly give your honest opinions and advise.
I wouldn’t mind connecting to this your friend. I am going for Student Affairs too grin

I think he should reword his post graduation plan. Who does he intend to lecture? Student Affairs is not regarded as a course of study in Nigeria.

Administrative.
Okay.

* a detailed introduction of who you are and why you are interested in that position.

Look at Supervisory questions

* Your supervisory style ( when talking about this, use the STAR to give an example of a time you supervised people)
* what you like in a supervisor ( remember to emphasize that you can work with anyone while you state what you would like)

Look at time management questions ( emphasize prioritizing, flexibility)
Look at how to support students with different identities ( especially if your interview is Student life or Reslife)

How you deal with changes ( you can use Covid as an example for this. Just emphasize your ability to adapt and flexibility)

Some of them might even ask why you chose the school. So prepare for it as well

How you show support for students

And situation questions like

* describe a time when you worked with a difficult person

* describe a time when you worked independently

* describe your ideal work environment

* describe a time follow up made a difference

* describe a time you had to respond to a crisis situation

* if your position involves mediating conflicts, you might be asked to describe a time you mediated a conflict situation?

Go to the website of the department and be aware of what they do so you can tailor your responses to suit them.

Overall be sincere and natural.

I once told an interviewer that I had no idea what she was talking about ( I did not say it like this though) and funnily, I got the assistantship. One last thing I do is that I try to push the fact that Higher Education is different in Nigeria and this helped me in all my interviews. I wish you all the best!

Moderators, please let me know if I'm going against the rules and I'll delete this post. For now, here goes nothing:

So, I encountered loads of difficulties when I was leaving Nigeria. With the limits on Nigerian bank cards, I and the guy attending the same school (Miami University, Oxford, Ohio) could not pay for many things, even within that $50/$100 CBN-imposed limit. We spent days trying to pay for a hotel/Airbnb, GreyHound services, and whatnot. I've not been that stressed in years.

Let me not even go into how AirBnB canceled a booking when we were at the airport, an hour to getting on our flight. Why did they do that? Our booking was tagged as fraudulent. So, the booking came from Nigeria and payment from a virtual card with a US address. Also, because Airbnb refused to verify our Nigerian phone numbers for reasons known to them, we used one belonging to a friend in the UK. It was extremely complicated, and we'd tried all we knew, but that's the only option we had before we found someone who helped at the last minute. Let's just say that we ended up rooming in a hotel (read: motel) in a Nigerian-like neighborhood in New York. grin

Lol. Don't ask why the UK friend didn't just pay and do everything from his end. As I said, things were super-complicated.

The thing is that things could have been easier if someone helped facilitate everyone from one spot, with one card.

Based on this experience (and several more), I would like to help anyone who needs to pay for buses, accommodation, semester dues, and anything that they can't do from Nigeria. I've seen people who can't access US websites, people whose cards are not working, and people who are faced with using a third-party offering ridiculous over-N515 (naira) exchange rates.

I understand that everyone's being careful and that you don't want to get scammed. But I am genuinely doing this because I can imagine the kind of stress people are going through right now.

Please send a message if you would like me to help. When you reach out, I can share details about myself, and you can Google me, too, for credibility purposes.

At this point, the stress in the world (read: Nigeria) is too much to add difficulties when japa-ing.

I sincerely hope this helps someone. Again: Moderators, if this is way off, please let me know and I'll delete this.

Thank you.
I got offer at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Please can I get an information from you.

Should I PM you?

Tbh, I feel like she is trying to speed up the whole process (marriage). Get focused and marry her!!!
Obaseki500:
I have never been this confused in my entire life...

I have a girlfriend that we have been dating for 6 years now... We are not married because I was not stable financially but now things seems to be much better and next year should be the year....I reside in Ibadan so she came in last year after her education to get a job, she's a nurse and we were staying together up till now.

Sex has never been an issue between us up until December last year. We sleep on the same bed and we live in the same house but we have not had sex since December 2020 till date. She's right beside me as I type this message. Each time I go close to her, she tells me I am not entitled to sex because I have not paid her bride price. I just could not understand the sudden change in her attitude towards sex when wedding is next year.

She also locks her phone and even WhatsApp. Now, I am beginning to have doubt about marrying her.

If two schools offered you full funding, kindly accept one(don’t be selfish grin) and reject the other because at the end of the day you can only go to one school. Rejecting one offer will definitely help someone else being waitlisted for funding.
