Gowon must apologise to Igbo over his role in Civil War – PDP


The Abia state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said the former Military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon(rtd) must apologise to the people of the Southeast over his role in the Biafra Civil War.

The acting State Publicity Secretary of the PDP in Abia, Abraham Amah, in a statement, said Gowon’s name unsettles a lot of people in the Southeast due to his involvement in the Civil War.


Amah was reacting to a statement that Gowon, alongside the state governor-elect, Alex Otti, would lead a prayer session in the state on Sunday.

The prayer session is scheduled to be held at Master’s Vessel Church in Umuahia area of state.


The statement read: “The attention of the Abia PDP has been drawn to a news item in circulation on social media indicating that Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, would on Sunday April 23 lead a prayer session in one Master’s Vessel Church Umuahia, Abia State under the auspices of his pet project, Nigeria Prays, to herald a new Abia. Whatever ‘a new Abia’ means.


“The name, Yakubu Gowon is unsettling to many people in the South-East given the ignoble roles he played during the Biafran Civil War for which he is yet to render any public apology.”

Amah said the choice of Gowon as special guest in a state that is the home town of slain General Aguiyi Ironsi was insensitive.

The PDP noted that Abia state had produced a Catholic Bishop and other high-ranking clergymen.

It stressed that Gowon had yet to publicly admit his mistakes in the Civil War.

Amah stated: “The only way the prayer session would make meaning to the millions of Southeasterners, dead and alive, is for Gowon to use the opportunity of the prayer session and convert it to a moment of truth and apologise to the people for his role in the atrocious war that led to the untimely death of millions of our very resourceful people,” he added.

Jeffrey Guterman, a retired American mental health counsellor, has filed a request to the Federal Bureau of Intelligence, FBI, asking it to release its file on Nigeria’s President-elect Bola Tinubu.

The information Guterman is asking the FBI to release is related to Tinubu’s $460,000 forfeiture on a drug trafficking case he had in the United States of America in 1993.

Taking to his verified Twitter handle on Thursday, the health counsellor disclosed that he had filed an expedited request because of Tinubu’s reported drug trafficking.
According to him, Tinubu’s reported drug trafficking case is a threat to the public.

He wrote: “I just sent a request to the @FBI to release their file on Bola Tinubu based on the U.S. Freedom of Information Act.”

Chinua Achebe also deserved the Nobel Prize no doubt, but he never won it. Wole Soyinka won it in 1986. That award has been in existence since 1901. If the award committee wanted to give it to Chinua Achebe, they would have given him the prize long before Soyinka won it in 1986. Achebe died in 2013 - 27 solid years after Soyinka won the prize. The committee still didn’t give him the award; and you are here saying Soyinka “stole” the award that Achebe should have received.

Chinua Achebe himself never lamented not receiving the prize because, believe it or not, the Nobel Prize, or any award for that matter, is not the true measure of achievement for a writer. No African novel has sold more copies and has been translated into as many languages as “Things Fall Apart”.

To measure Achebe’s accomplishments by whether he won the Nobel Prize or not belittles his work and insults his memory.

Incidentally, this same Wole Soyinka wrote in 2013: "This conduct is gross disservice to Chinua Achebe and disrespectful of the life-engrossing occupation known as literature. How did creative valuation descend to such banality? Do these people know what they're doing – they are inscribing Chinua's epitaph in the negative mode of thwarted expectations. I find that disgusting. Was it the Nobel that spurred a young writer, stung by Eurocentric portrayal of African reality, to put pen to paper and produce Things Fall Apart?"

You lot should leave literature alone for those of us who know its true worth, please. You all don’t read anyway. Why the sudden interest in who was a better writer as if you have bought or read any of their books?

Thank you Biafra people, thank you the advisory committee of the BRGIE for having faith in me and appointing me to this important job.

Yesterday i was elected to serve Biafra people as the Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic government in Exile, a very tough task that only need Gods guidance, wisdom, extraordinary knowledge to navigate through many obstacles to Biafra freedom and to the freedom of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The moment I saw the premise of Chiamanda argument where she claimed most polls show Obi will win as her basis for her belief that the mandate thief call Obi won the election was when I know she is sick upstairs.

USA already congratulated Tinubu and strategically planning on how to maintain cordial relationship with Nigeria considering the fact that China is somehow strong in Africa now.
