dayokanu:I dont get what you are driving at, will he become captain at bayern? Are you saying his gam is getting better at 30yrs+? I brought up Yaya because both were bought in the same year. so who was the better buy? It still early in the window, but I am sure we will soon see a few DMs of better quality move for less. |
bawomolo:no system is perfect. A balance has to reached between finding justice and wasting resources. so what are your standards, a serial rapist?I am actually more interested in people that commit lethal crimes like assassination and armed robbery. I don't think we have any confirmed serial killers yet, else they would also qualify. The legal system in Nigeria increases the risk innocent and typical poor people get the harshest punishment.and that is why the judiciary needs to improve. That should not be an excuse to deny the option of capital punishment. We can debate which offenses should warrant a life sentence as opposed to the death penalty, but the option for capital punishment should always be available. |
mikeansy:A law should not be a law if the society is unwilling to enforce. Like the sabbath, the constitution is for the people, and not the people for the constitution. Before modifying an entry in the constitution, we should be able to test drive under the proposed amendment and thus not convert the constitution into a political worksheet. Let the arms of government of government learn to make appointments primarily on merit, and then we can do away with FC. Presently there is no evidence to suggest that its removal would not result in an abuse of the loop hole. |
bawomolo:The option you provided are only viable in a system wherein the people have a voice. That (like you rightly pointed out) is not available to Nigerians yet, unless one approves of militancy which results in loss of lives and often fail to achieve their goals. To pick my poison, I like the taste of the current one. When we have a more educated (not just learned) polity, and the office holders are responsive to the people, then we can do away with such as this, but to set off down the slope with no brakes is quite risky. |
Bialegend:herein lies the source of our political problems. Since I disagreed with your post, the illogical conclusion is that I am from a particular region. Bialegend:In foreign countries it is given names like affirmative action and diversity You should find time to read the book Affirmative Action Around the World: An Empirical Study by Thomas Sowell. |
blacksta:we should not create another problem in a bid to avoid solving the existing one. Hence I said the efforts should be towards improving the judiciary, and reducing the abuse of capital punishment. I don't mean everyone should be executed, but the option of executing a felon should always be on the table. There are accounts of several gruesome crimes in Lagos alone. Such criminals deserve to lose their head on a chopping block. |
bawomolo:I agree that the decision should be taken with care. But prosecuting with care involves making sure that the case is beyond 'reasonable' doubt and does not equate to repeated appeals on technical grounds, that only serve to enrich the lawyers and waste the tax payers money great humans getting snapped like chicken.Like I said, there is nothing humane about killing. and nobody said it should be done in public. what's the cutoff mark for someone that can be reformed and one that can't be?The vagueness of the cutoff is the problem and thus the argument to keep some one alive hoping he reforms is faulty. While we don't know what he may do in the future, we are likely aware of what he has done in the past and that is what he is being punished for. Anyone guilty of an lethal crime is eligible for execution in my books. Should they all be executed? No, but definitely some do not deserve to keep their lives |
bawomolo:would the same question not arise on a smaller scale? e.g. can all state commissioners be of a particular tribe within a state? |
bawomolo:Your first sentence contradicts your second paragraph. It is either no chance of appeal or too many appeals; you cannot have both. Numerous time consuming appeals of a sentence is a flaw in the judiciary and should be corrected. Unless they take forever, It should not be an excuse to keep alive someone who is a lethal threat to others in the society As to forms of execution, there is nothing humane about killing. Saying one form is more humane than another is politicizing. I personally feel that hanging is the best form of execution: its cheap and also environmentally friendly. |
asha 80:I gave my opinion and have simply asked you to provide yours. If it is removed, then how do you protect the interest of those not in power? militancy? |
mikeansy:like I said, unqualified is easily dealt with. Incompetence is the troublesome fellow. The fact that appointee are nominated by the president and then confirmed by the senate, puts the president in a position to bully the house, and without a constitution entry to support the senate, could get ugly real fast. Take for example the Borishade saga under Obasanjo, in which obj essentially forced it down the throat of the house. The federal character could serve as a check or as a requirement. The final judgment call is made by the senate, and I think using it as check is the right option. |
asha 80:simply answer the question |
Bialegend:and where is your head at? Its people like you that peddle tribal sentiments that are the prime culprits of our failings. |
asha 80:If it is removed, then how do you protect the interest of those not in power? militancy? |
Though I am less interested in the arguments presented in the article, I feel Nigeria needs to maintain capital punishment as an option. Efforts should be towards improving the judiciary and reducing its abuse. Some criminals simply deserve to die. I don't see the justice in keeping a criminal alive on the taxes of his victims, only in the vain hope of him becoming reformed, while risking his having an opportunity to claim more victims. The only to be sure that a criminal would not repeat the act is to execute him. |
Federal Character should remain in the constitution as its existence does not necessitate its enforcement. We should be able to overlook federal character if the person being appointed is the best choice. The federal character was introduce to protect the interest of all, that none feel marginalized simply because the president is not from his state or region. The unfortunate truth is that the fact that someone from your hometown is in power, does not guarantee that he would act in the best interest of the common man from his town.Federal character is based on your ethnicity, and does not always reflect your allegiance. As a democratic nation, we are still infants. The various arms of government are far from representing the wishes of the populace. To take of the leash on some of them is premature. If it is abolished, reintroducing it when needed may not be easy, as by then the damage might be beyond repair. |
mikeansy:If someone is unqualified, then the question of competency is moot. Making a case for denying someone on the basis of incompetency is likely more difficult. At times such provision can allow us to achieve the desired aim even if the law is applied disingenuously. For example, Al Capone was sentence to life imprisonment for tax evasion, and not his dastardly acts, as the state had problems proving the latter. |
@dayokanu - Arshavin is 28 and was bought for €14m - Schevchenko was 30 when chelsea bought him for €46.5m - Berbatov was 27 when ManU got him for €36m - zidane was 29 when joined madrid for €55m so which of this buys do you think helps your argument? The 30yr old Schev? Football history is riddled with over priced purchases, with ManU and Chelsea often found guilty. Do not try to use one over payment to justify another. Yaya Toure joined Barca for €9m at age 24. is he not better than tymoschuk? Tymoschuk's main asset to zenit was his leadership skills (he was captain of shakter donesk for several seasons and is vice captain of the Ukraine national team) that Advocaat needed for his inexperienced team, and thus soon after he was acquired he became captain of Zenit. Bayern does not lack in the leadership department as Van Bommel, Lucio and Demichelis are good enough. As a player he is a nice addition to the bayern squad, giving them depth in the DM department but he is not worth more than €10m |
and because 'peaceful' protesters were dispersed with tear gas in oakland, the US is a failed state? ![]() There is a difference between a protest and a riot. Often in Nigeria, civil protest are hijacked by rioters. If the protest is unlawful then the police have the right to disperse it. Without being privy to the details of what occurred, one cannot automatically assume that the police was in the wrong. |
I think the federal character should remain in the constitution for the time being, to serve as a legal check against tribalism and nepotism in federal appointments. What I feel we need at the moment is that the senate evaluates nominees primarily on merit, and federal character only be used to deny appointment to incompetent ones. Revoking someones appointment on the grounds of federal character is wrong. The issue should only come up at the time of appointment. If he has been in office, his continuance should be primarily based on his performance in the position. |
agabaI23:I felt it better to simply ignore it. Frank-C essentially says that stubbornness should be a key requirement for becoming CBN governor ![]() The inability to make sound analysis and reach objective conclusion, is one of the banes of the Nigerian society. Semi-illiteracy is dangerous, as one feels he knows what he does not know. |
adigun101:and the CBN governor makes economic policy for the nation? what then is the job of the finance minister? Its irritating to see people evaluate qualifications in a vacuum. Look at their qualifications and experience, and match it to the responsibilities of the CBN. Having a PhD doesnt make you the best man for every job. Is Soludo also the best carpenter in Nigeria? Paul Volcker, a former FR chairman did not have a phd degree and was chairman for 8 yrs. Soludo himself had been a economics professor and consultant to the world bank. His prior position was as an adviser to the Obj administration. He has never been responsible for economic planning for any government (in Nigeria that responsibility belongs to the finance minister). The responsibility of the CBN goes beyond making monetary policy. A key part of it is supervision of the banking sector to which Sanusi is definitely more suited to than Soludo. |
Most people seem to ignore the supervisory role of the CBN and seem focused soley on monetary policies. Countries that have both macroeconomic policy making and supervisory functions resident in a single entity don't employ macroeconomic theoreticians as head of such establishments. |
netotse:The quality of a PC is dependent on the semiconductor devices in it, and that is more or less same for a particular series, and independent of region e.g. Intel or AMD or Nvidia does not make chips with a region in mind, As the fabrication process matures, yield quality and QA improves. Most PC manufactures maintain two lines:a early adoption series and a more tested series. A typical example for dell is the inspiron vs latitude where the inspiron usually has more recent technologies, while the latitude goes for reliability. This distinction is often separated as home and business product. The regional differences in most laptops stems from standards and technologies, and not QA. For example the power supply rating in the US is different from europe, emission level masks are often different etc. To say that one would get a better quality PC by buying from a particular region is misinforming others. If such were true, it is illegal and said company can be prosecuted for it. |
Moonstone:Uncle Pat has made clear his intentions for 2010: renew D-Wade (possibly this summer) and acquire a big man that can run the floor. Bosch is his preferred choice, with Amare being second. |
@dayokanu 14 million euros is excessive for tymoschuk. At 30yrs, he is past his prime. Zenit acquired him for 15 million euros over 2yrs ago. |
That was quick. |
where is the contradiction?they govt is not stopping gas production, but rather stopping exports. The move is in the right direction in my opinion and hopefully it would lead to increased power generation in the country. |
saxywale:and what is the difference, different components, different config? ![]() |
