Right now, Mpape, one of the communities earmarked for demolition in Abuja is being demolished, despite court intervention that the action should wait until hearing and judgement is delivered on the legality of the demolition, despite intervention by democratic institutions such as the National Human Rights Commission which has described such demolitions as gross violation of human rights, despite...
appeals for caution by all men and women of goodwill...it was Makoko, Lagos, a few weeks ago, Rivers too had recorded its own version...and we call this a democracy? when government violate its own laws and the courts as well with wanton impunity and democratic institutions are treated with utmost contempt...

I was in Mpape last month and I saw human suffering...three people had died by that time on the mere sighting of the red markings on their building...now more will certainly die...

Whoever blames Boko haram for killing innocent people and refuse to fight and condemn this deliberate violence on the poor and the weak is either an ignoramus or accomplice of these crimes!

It is not because i dont like xtian or that they are not good enough, its just that i am a lazy type, even if she convert,i cant marry unlearned Islamic lady. Even if she is a Muslim without islamic basics,i cant marry such person.

AN OPEN LETTER TO MALAM SANUSI LAMIDO SANUSI ON HIS BUSINESS DECISION TO INTRODUCE N5,000 NAIRA SINGEL CURRENCY NOTE BY SEPTEMBER 01-2012!!!!!

Dear Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi,

As noted, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will very likely
release into the market on September 1, 2012, a N5,000 currency, The Sun Newspaper, August 9, 2012. Mallam, this may be the worst business decision to be taken by Central Bank of Nigeria since independency because of its mix implications. The Nigerian economy is not strong enough to handle this type of harsh economic policy since the economy depends solely on the stability of oil price. Also, the timing of this policy is wrong due to the worrisome economic developments of the nation. Mallam, you should put into consideration the high inflation rate this decision may cause. Above all, when combined with concerns about counterfeiting, it becomes more scaring why you should take such a “radical” economic decision at this point in time.

Mallam, for your note, a short history about high-denomination notes: courtesy of Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: high-denomination currency was prevalent from the very beginning of U.S. Government. Interest-bearing notes of $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 were issued at different time. However, the U.S. Federal Reserve began taking high-denomination bills out of circulation in 1969. As of May 30, 2009, there were only 336 known $10,000 bills known to exist; 342 remaining $5,000 bills; and 165,372 remaining $1,000 bills. For the most part, these bills were used by banks and the Federal Government for large financial transactions. However, the introduction of the electronic money system has made large-scale cash transactions obsolete.

Mallam, I hope that you reconsider your decision in line with the trends of 21st century technology so that Nigeria doesn’t end up like Zimbabwe. I wish you all the luck in your business decisions.

Sincerely,

Elder (Dr.) Chukwuma O. Nwaonicha.

Lagos, world’s 3rd worst city to live...............mirror.

Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial nerve center, is the third worst city to live in the world, a new report carried out by The Economist Intelligence Unit has revealed. According to the report on Liveability, which assesses locations around the world that provide the best or the worst living conditions, Lagos placed 138th out of the 140 cities surveyed.

Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is the overall worst city while Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea came second in the chart of the worst cities to live in the world.

Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire placed 131st; Tehran, Iran came 132; Douala, Cameroon is the 133rd; Tripoli, Libya placed 134th; Karachi, Pakistan came 135th; Algiers, Algeria is 136th while Harare in Zimbabwe placed 137th in the category of the worst cities in the world.

Ironically, Africa was given prime place in the category of worst cities to live as six out of 10 worst cities are on the continent. According to the survey, Melbourne, Australia tops the list of the best cities to live in, while Vienna, Austria, is the second best city.

Three Canadian cities Vancouver, Toronto, and Calgary – are third, fourth and fifth best cities to live in. Again, Adelaide and Sydney, both Australian cities placed sixth and seventh liveable places in the world.

Helsinki, Finland is eighth; Perth, Australia and Auckland, New Zealand are the ninth and 10th best places to live.

No African cities feature among the best 10 cities to live in the world. Every city in the survey is assigned a rating of relative comfort for over 30 qualitative and quantitative factors across five broad categories: stability; healthcare; culture and environment; education; and infrastructure.

Each factor in a city is rated as acceptable, tolerable, uncomfortable, undesirable or intolerable. In terms of stability, Lagos scores 25 per cent; 33.3 per cent in healthcare, 52.3 per cent in culture and environment and 48.2 per cent in infrastructure.

In the survey, Lagos has overall rating of 39.0 per cent. The ideal is 100
.

In the healthcare category, availability of private healthcare, quality of private healthcare, availability of public healthcare, quality of public healthcare and availability of over-the counter drugs were used as the criteria.

In culture and environment category, the following: humidity/temperature rating, discomfort of climate to travelers, level of corruption, social or religious restrictions, level of censorship, sporting availability, cultural availability, food and drink, consumer goods and services are used as the indices.

In the survey, availability of private education, quality of private education and public education are used in the education category.

In infrastructure where Lagos was scored 48.2 rating, indices such as quality of road network, quality of public transport, quality of international links, availability of good quality housing, quality of energy provision, quality of water provision, and quality of telecommunications were used.

“Conflict is responsible for many of the lowest scores. This is not only because stability indicators have the highest single scores, but also because factors defining stability spread to have an adverse effect on other categories. For example, the threat of armed conflict will not just cause disruption in its own right, it will also damage infrastructure, overburden hospitals, and undermine the availability of goods, services and recreational activities. Africa (North and Sub-Saharan) and Asia account for all 13 cities, with violence, whether through crime, civil insurgency, terrorism or war, playing a strong role,” the report stated.......

21 Year-Old Nigerian Student, Nana Skari graduates from University of Kent as the Most Outstanding Graduating Student in Engineering.

It’s always wonderful to hear news of Nigerians doing great things at home and in the diaspora. That is why at BellaNaija.com, we are very proud of Nana Skari. A 21 year-old Nigerian recently graduated from the University of Kent, UK with a First Class degree and an outstanding award in Engineering.

At her graduation, Nana recieved an award as the most outstanding graduating student on an IET accredited course in the University. IET (Institute of Engineering and Technology) is a body that accredits all Engineering, Computing, Multimedia, and IT undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the UK.

Her field of study was Computer Systems Engineering (BEng).

In an exclusive chat with BN after her graduation, Nana who was born in Borno state recalled growing up in Nigeria and attending Primary and Secondary schools in Kaduna.

“I attended Tender Care in Kaduna where I did my Kindergarten, Nursery and Primary. Then I went to Danbo Int’l College in Kaduna as well for secondary education. After that I attended David Game College London for my A-levels; then University of Kent where I just graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Systems Engineering.“

She intially wanted to study paediatric neurosurgery “but the years were just too much“. So she decided to study something she enjoys doing. “I love maths. It’s the best thing in the world. So I chose to study engineering.“

Speaking on her social life and relationship with her course mates at the University, Nana said many people underestimated her abilities because of her playful side. ”I’m not your typical geek. I’m often late for lectures, I sit at the back of the class, and I never answer questions asked in class voluntarily unless it’s directed at me. Many people underestimate my abilities because of my playful side. But God has blessed me to be a focused, optimistic, autonomous, and enthusiastic person. I’m the most serious person when it’s time to work and I play hard when it’s time to play. If I want something, I work hard to get it. Settling for less is not even an option.“

Looking ahead, she is preparing to start an MSc in International Oil and Gas Management. “I don’t want to limit myself to the engineering field. I want to broaden my horizon,” she says about her preferred course.

Her dream is to make a fortune, build an empire, and impact as many people’s lives as possible, in any positive way she can.

Although Nana has been in the UK for five years now, she says she speaks Hausa fluently and comes back to Abuja every now and then. She would love to return back upon completion of her Masters.

“I believe Nigeria is a blessed nation. We are going through a lot at the moment but I believe in redemption. I do hope our parents and grandparents can rest, and give we the future leaders a chance to restore hope to our nation. Yes I’ll move back home at the completion of my masters. Get married, gain some work experience, learn how to apply my knowledge to the real world, and continue my journey to being the Oprah Winfrey of my generation.“

Her first class degree and most outstanding student award means a whole lot to her, she says, and makes her more motivated to further her studies. “And guys find it attractive so it’s cool.” she adds with a smile.

Well done Nana!

PoliticsACN Governorship Aspirants Returns To LP In Ondo by bilms(op): 11:45am On Aug 14, 2012
Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State yesterday formally declared his intention to contest the October 20 governorship election on the platform of the ruling Labour Party (LP), thus ending months of speculation on his intention.

The event coincided with the fourth year anniversary commemoration of the July 25, 2008 verdict when the Election Petitions Tribunal, presided over by Justice Garba Nabaruma, gave its unanimous judgement declaring Mimiko the winner of the April, 2007 election.

Also yesterday, a leading governorship aspirant on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Dr. Olu Agunloye, returned to the LP amid funfair.

At an event held at the Democracy Park, Akure, the state capital and attended by dignitaries across the country, Mimiko said his bid for second term in office was because of the need to consolidate the achievements recorded by his administration in the past hree and a half years.

The governor, flanked by leaders of the LP, members of the House of Assembly, labour and Afenifere leaders, said: “We desire to continue to contribute to the deepening of democracy in our land through clear-headed performance and delivery of the public good, and thus unravel efforts at substitution of sloganeering for governance that some folks are striving to emplace as culture among our people.

“I desire to run again on the platform of your party, the Labour Party, undoubtedly the most progressive party in this country today; a party with extensive potential anchored on the increasing knowledge among our people that the quality, depth and breadth of performance of government is the principal yardstick by which progressive politics is gauged, not by the depth of your capacity at sloganeering.”

Saying he would not depart from the Oath of Office he took in February, 2009, Mimiko said: “By the special grace of Almighty God and with your trust and confidence, I again declare that I will continue to work for you!”

“Our desire is that by the time we shall be ending our tenure - at the end of the second term which we seek now - we, by God’s own grace, shall have fundamentally restructured governance in Ondo State through such glaring high achievements that the barometer of performance shall have been set at a level below which any future government would find it to difficult to operate.”

Mimiko recalled that he declared his intention on December 14, 2006 at Akure City Hall to contest the April 14, 2007 governorship and exactly four years ago, the Election Petition Tribunal declared him the winner of the election

The Appeal Court, presided over by Justice Umaru Abdulahi, also affirmed the judgement of Justice Nararuma on February 23, 2009 which made the declaration of next day possible.

On each of these landmark occasions, Mimiko said: “I made a broad commitment to work for you, the good people of Ondo State. I give thanks to God that three and a half years on, we have, by the grace of God, lived by that commitment.”

Justifying the mandate given to him years ago, Mimiko said: “During these three and a half years, we made the people of Ondo State the central focus of governance. We embarked on a string of people-oriented projects. We, by the sheer magnitude and quality of our projects, benchmarked Ondo State for Nigeria , and indeed, in many respects, for Africa.

“We have raised the profile of governance and set a standard beyond which no government can afford to fall in our dear State. We have, by the grace of God, pursued activities that cohere with our vision of government. We have formulated policies that were informed by the collective interest of our people, executed projects focusing on the primacy of man in the scheme of development and, generally, we have democratized access to the good things of life for the people of our dear state.

“As we promised in 2009, we have not shied away from what we consider the obligation of government in a society like ours. We thus have delivered programmes directed, as we promised, at ensuing that ‘the weak in the society are given opportunities to develop and actualize their potential”.

Mimiko said it was with the conviction the governments within the limits of our God-given resources and ability have kept faith with the electorate, that “I solemnly seek your mandate for a second term in office as Governor.”

Mimiko commended President Goodluck Jonathan for his commitment to free and fair elections, which was demonstrated in the responsible manner in which he deployed security forces which made clean elections possible in Edo State on July 14.

At the event were Mimiko's wife, Olukemi, Deputy Governor, Alhaji Ali Olanusi, his wife, Bejide, Afenifere Leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae, Agunloye, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, NLC President, Comrade Abduwaheed Omar, TUC President, Peter Esele, Congress for Political Change spokesperson, Mr Yinka Odumakin, Senator Remi Okunriboye, Afenifere Secretary, Chief Seinde Arogbofa, Senator Boluwaji Kunlere, Senator Ayo Akintelure, Dr. Kunle Olajide, Dr Fredrick Fasehun, Speaker of the House of Assembly, Mr Samuel Adesina, his deputy, Mr Dare Francis Emiola, Abiodun Ogunbi, Special Adviser to Jonathan on International Affairs, Dr Pius Osunyikanmi, ex-Militant Leader, Chief Bibopiri Ajube, and others.
