Zamfara hit by lead-poison again
Ibrahim SidiMuh’d, Gusau

An impending epidemic of lead poison is threatening Zamfara State, particularly its state capital of Gusau as another batch of victims of lead-poison has been identified in the State, sending government officials and traditional leaders into a state of panic.

Those afflicted however are yet to be completely known as both the traditional council and state government are keeping the numbers as guarded secrets.

All that is known is thatSamaru, Tsunami, Mai Toshshi and Polo areas all in Gusau metropolis, the Zamfara state capital, have been identified as worst hit. It is suspected that certain unscrupulous elements may have smuggled contaminated objects and chemicals out of mining factories into urban areas with intent to making capital gain.

The Emir of Gusau, AlhajiKabir Dan Baba has claimed that 64 people were medically tested and confirmed to have been affected by elements of lead-poisoning, according to one of the victims.

The emir who made the announcement in a broadcast on the state owned radio, expressed fear of an impending epidemic reminiscent of the similar incident that occurred in Anka and Bukkuyum local government areas of the state a couple of years ago. He feared a repeat in .loss of several lives in his domain, which he saidhad been confirmed by medical experts indicating that many people in the stated areas had actually inhaled an amount of mining processing dust capable of leading to their death.

AlhajiKabir Dan Baba lamented the filthy act of sneaking in the mining objects by some irresponsible people to process it within adensely populated metropolitan areas in order to achieve monetary gains.

“It is quite dare-devil for someone to violate warnings by the state government and numerous health organisations against mining activities within resident areas”, the emir queried.

He warned that the emirate will not fold its arms to watch individuals and, or group of people illegally conducting mining activities within the territory stressing the need “for people to be very vigilante and report any suspected mining spot to any of the security agencies in the state”.

Commenting, the Gusau Local government Council chairman, AlhajiLawaliMada who spoke through his Director Primary Health Department, Ismaila Ibrahim however said they were yet to receive any report pertaining to an outbreak.

The director claimed that he was only assigned by the chairman to visit Tudun Wada Police division in response to a notice of arrest of some people given by the Police in connection with the case of illegal mining activities.

“We dont know the source of information emanating from the emirate council on the outbreak of lead-poison, but the local government will investigate and intervene accordingly”, said the director.

Also commenting on the matter, the Secretary to the Gusau Emirate Council, NuraddeenKabirDanbaba, disclosed further that a case of lead poisoning was detected at the Federal Medical Center,Gusau when some people were examined during a normal medical check-up.

The Secretary revealed that, doctors who conducted medical examinations on some out patientshadcame up with the results confirming thatsome of them people’s blood contained a threatening amount of lead-poison.

Meanwhile, the Zamfara State Gold Buyers and Sellers Cooperative Union have disassociated itself from the illegal miners currently inpolice custody. The union secretary, AlhajiSa’aduAdamu, who claimed ignorance of illegal mining activities by his union members said, the union had since complied with the state government directive which banned unauthorized mining activities.

Youth group criticizes Northern leadership
63 million youths would get new orientation

Timbyen Amos Dashe and TerhembaDzomon, Lafia

As he bestrideshis first one hundred days in office, the minister for Youth development, Barrister InuwaAbdulkadir has lashed out at those who contaminate youth organizations with adult interference and refuse to allow the youths to run their affairs vowing that by the time he is through with the office the youths of Nigeria would run on a different mindset than the one they have imbibed over time.

The Youth Development Minister made this promise just as a youth group, the National Youths Assembly of Nigeria (NYAN) has called the northern part of Nigerian the architect of its own downfall and its own enemy.

The minister spoke exclusively to TheROAD newspapers in his office.

He criticized those whom he said made a vacation out of running youth groups and warned them to desist, as the youth groups in the country were being reorganized and repositioned to meet global best practices and bring them at par with youths around the world.

Barrister InuwaAbdulkadir who himself is youthful pleaded with the youths of this country to purge themselves of the bad lessons that were infused in them by the old brigade of Nigerian leaders, saying his ministry shall “rebuild their orientation in order to make the country a worthwhile place for the yet unborn Nigerian generation.”

TheROAD newspaper reported last week that about sixty-three million youths are either unemployed or under-employed thus giving room for the younger generation of Nigerians to engage in anti-social or downright criminal behavior.

Brimming with confidence after a meeting with officials of the National Youth Council of Nigeria and later the Director General of the National Youth service Corps, the minister admitted that government cannot provide jobs for all the unemployed people in the country but also said that the youths themselves must strive to be self-employed as that is the trend among youths all over the world.

He said, “a lot of efforts have been made in terms of empowerment, skills acquisition etc, and young men and women who are ready to participate in all, need to be encouraged but for one reason or the other a number of them do not understand the importance of sound and formal education and enlightenment.”

He added that “althoughsome graduates are trained in entrepreneurshipand skill acquisition, in agriculture and other sectors the problem ariseswhen these youths are trained, given some grants to help facilitate their employment but at the end of the day, most of them blow off the grants because of a preconceived mindset, which tells them that government money is a largesse.”

“So some of them participate in these programs,” he continues,“because they have nowhere to go in the morning to call their offices or places of work; even for those of them who are employed, they are, in most cases, underemployed; they are not in positions that match their qualifications.”

As a solution, Abdulkadir says,“there is an innovation that the ministry is working on; the ministry is trying to ensure that these young men and women attend a preliminary program which may last for a week, where issues of citizenship and leadership would be discussed, and the participants accept and digest for personal benefit and the nation at large, to also remind the youths that they have an obligation to themselves to work harder than they are currently doing to improve on themselves and be able to render help to the needy in cash and kind, which makes more sense”.

Sounding more optimistic than most Nigerians would rather be, the minister hoped that “by the time a group of them are mobilized that are so willing to participate in either entrepreneurship or any other programs the cash prize, would no longer be the motivation so much that such an individual who gets the grant, would be rest assured that he would not be going for something else contrary to what he was meant for”.

“When you train these youths and make them understand the reason and objective of them attending such programs, by the time the program is set to begin, they already know what they are expected to do”, InuwaAbdulkadir concluded.

Meanwhile, a youth group, theNational Youths Assembly of Nigeria (NYAN) has called the northern part of Nigerian the architect of its own downfall and its own enemy.

The National Youths Assembly of Nigeria (NYAN) described the political style of leadership by northern elements as lacking development vision when politicians of the region are opportune to lead Nigeria. The youth group therefore said the region has over the years, become a victim of its style of politics.

National Youths Assembly of Nigeria (NYAN) in a statement by KassimMuh’dKassim, Dandoka Gaya Santos and Gostime Samuel, Speaker, Clerk and Deputy Speaker, respectively of the group, blamed the turbulent wave of crises in most parts of the country to a seed sown by the northern political style of leadership in a discourse by the group.

The statement which traced the history of Nigeria from independence also stressed that Nigeria’s post- independence era has been governed on most occasions by northerners. The statement continued that, under the present democratic dispensation in the country, the North has produced the Vice President of the country, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Group General Manager of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), the Inspector General of Police, Comptroller General of Nigerian Custom Service, the National Chairman of the PDP, Ministers of Defence, Information, Interior and others on top of the President’s Special Adviser on Political Affairs, among others.

“What then does the north want; what has the north lacked. Why are there crisis here and there, and being blamed on unemployment and inequality? What again would the north get that will make the northern part of the country satisfied?”, were some of the questions the group sought to find answers to.

The statement then enjoined northern elements to tender apologies to President Goodluck Jonathan, who the youth group claimed, has done much for the north, and yet has received bashings from elites of the North for not considering the region as part of the country, which is often said to be the reason for widespread violence in the region.

Babangida threatens to expose Buhari

A few hours after President Goodluck Jonathan and ex-Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari took a swipe at former leaders, ex-Military President Ibrahim Babangida fired back.

He asked Dr. Jonathan to learn to accept criticisms and threatened to expose the “holier-than thou-attitude” of Gen. Buhari.

Gen. Babangida, who spoke through Prince Kassim Afegbua, his media adviser, reminded Gen. Buhari that those who live in glass houses should not throw stones.

He also advised Dr. Jonathan to look elsewhere, not him, if he is blaming past leaders that are criticising him.

Kassim said: “On President Jonathan, there is nothing wrong in criticism if it is constructive and in the interest of the country. Gen. Babangida is one unique former President who does not criticise a sitting President as a matter of courtesy.

“If President Jonathan is blaming past leaders, he should look elsewhere, certainly not IBB.

“On Gen. Buhari, it is not in IBB’s tradition to take up issues with his colleague former President. But for the purpose of record, we are conversant with Gen. Buhari’s so-called holier-than-thou attitude.

“He is a one-time Minister of Petroleum and we have good records of his tenure as minister.

“Secondly, he also presided over the Petroleum Trust Fund ( PTF) which records we also have.

“We challenge him to come out with clean hands in those two portfolios he headed. Or, we will help him to expose his. “records of performance during those periods.”

“Those who live in glass houses do not throw stones. Gen. Buhari should be properly guided.”e. Lets keep watching as event unfold.

BusinessRe: Conversation Of Jarus With SANUSI On The New Currency Policy by bilms(op):
When it comes to economic matters,i may be an illiterate, but my illiteracy on that subject matter doesn't take away my ordinary reasoning.

On the conversation of Jarus with SLS, i just like to raise some issue

My Conversation With SLS On The New Currency Policy

SLS:Our cashless policy never says there should not be any cash at all. It only discourages heavy cash in the system.

If our cashless policy never says there should not be any cash at all,it only discourages heavy cash in the system..Dont you think that the new N5k note and the coin being introduce side by side with the note of N5,N10 ett would contradict the discouragement of heavy cash in the system?

SLS: Well, is there no corruption now that there are no N5000 denomination? It is not the duty of CBN to fight corruption among political class, you know. We are trying our best to block all holes of corruption, but that doesn't stop CBN from introducing a currency management policy that it deems fit. Fighting corruption is the work of EFCC, Police etc

I agree with SLS that it is not the duty of the CBN to fight corruption, but i disagree with him that is there no corruption now that there are no N5000 denomination? Yes there is...But don't you think introducing this new note would increase the corrupt tendencies?Just like the EFCC,the CBN is also a part of the govt seeking solution to our national financial challenges which corruption is a major set back, don't you think that every policy to be introduced by the CBN is suppose to put guiding against corrupt tendencies first in its consideration?

ME: What of this scenario: an item that is worth say N4,800 will be forced to be rounded up to N5000?.

SLS: But we have not phased out N1000, N500, N200 now? So you mean it is only N5000 you can use to pay for a N4800 good? How have you been paying before? (laughter)

in very near future, when we will be paying tolls, paying for newspaper vending, with just coins at vending machine points.

Why do we need coin to pay for tolls, newspaper vending? what is wrong with paying with the note? how does paying toll with coin improved our system? what does it contribute to the discouragement of heavy cash in the system as the CBN stated?

SLS: Also note that, we are not cancelling the notes. We are introducing the coins side by side. So you will still have N20 notes, for example, with N20 coins, until it gains acceptability.

If the CBN said it is discouraging heavy cash flow in the system, yet it is introducing new note N5k,introducing coins of N5,N10,N20,N50 etc without withdrawing the previous once,it would also be reproducing the previous note along side with the new coins, how has it discourage the heavy cash flow by bringing in more cash to the system? I really care to know as i am an illustrate on this subject.
